how do you add a player to a transfer?

i am trying to buy defoe from tottenham for liverpool but want to exchange a player. when i click add player > other, it just takes me to the liverpool squad list of the other team and gives no instruction on how to add the player i want to exchange in to the proposed transfer deal!

the same happens in opposite land - i.e. when people offer for my player and i want to add one of theirs to the deal.

how do i select which player to add to these deals?!?

Once you're taken to the squad screen, right click on the player you want to exchange, and click exchange player.

after it shows you the squad screen, either right click over the player name, and there is an option to "exchange player".
or if you left click into the player, in the screen at the top somewhere, there is an option to exchange player.

On the Liverpool squad, either click the player you want to exchange, or right-click to bring up the little menu. Either way, find "Transfer and Contracts" (on the menu if you right-click, in the top right on a sub-tab if you left-click) then select "Exchange". Job done.

And it works too! Previously player exchanges were virtually always refused; now it's much more likely.
