Ladies and Gentlemen, it is that time of year again as we look to celebrate the cream of the activity in the CSE Forum over the past twelve months. Each year, we hold an awards ceremony dedicated to recognising the best challenges, sign-ups, experiment and individuals from that year. The first two threads were run by birdy123, whose activity here has been more limited in the past 12 months, so I will be running this year’s awards.

Let me outline how it works: you get one vote for each category. In the voting form, which follows this post, you delete the two threads or users that you don’t want to win, leaving the one you want to win. You then copy and paste this to your email provider and send it to siforumawards@googlemail.com, with your username in the subject line. You then need to claim your vote in this thread. This is so that we don’t get people voting twice unless they’re willing to break forum rules for it (which they should not be!). If you don’t know much about the threads given as nominations, read some of them and read their appraisals here (provided by dafuge, DodgeeD and myself), as that will allow you to give a fair vote.

Before we begin, I’d like to thank all of those who offered their help in the planning stages of this year’s awards, and also those whose help I did actually require in the end. It wasn’t just me working on this; iacovone and Walcott’s Wonderkids helped with the initial planning; dafuge, DodgeeD, iacovone, Walcott’s Wonderkids, rancer890, NepentheZ and Robert_296 helped with the nominating; and DodgeeD and dafuge helped narrow down the nominations shortlist that you see here.

The bread and butter of the forum – which FM09 Challenge has been the best?

One of the oldest and most popular challenges on the forum, the aim is to take a side promoted to the BSN/BSS at the start of the 2009/10 season all the way to Premier League and Champions League glory. This year it has really proved a hit with over 17,000 posts and 300,000 views for the thread as well as its own website, www.dafugeschallenge.com.

JoseRR’s FM09 Big Euro Challenge!

Following the same idea as dafuge’s Challenge, this one involves taking a newly-promoted team from the lowest playable division in France, Germany, Holland, Italy, Spain or Portugal to their national title and the Champions League crown. This challenge began last year but struggled against the more established challenges. However, this year it has flourished and become one of the forum’s most popular challenges, with over 5,000 posts.

Gundo’s FM09 European Adventure Challenge™
Author: Gundo
The same concept as dafuge’s and JoseRR’s challenge but with an extra twist – you must take a team unplayable at the start of the game from one of the smaller nations of Europe to the pinnacle of European football. This challenge can really put even the most experienced FM players to the test.

Hardest Challenge
This award is given to the challenge you feel is more difficult than all the others.

San Marino “Double” Challenge 2009

One of the first challenges on these forums and one of the toughest. You must take the San Marino club side from the lower reaches of the Italian league system to the Serie A title and Champions League crown, but that is not all. You also need to transform the San Marino national side from European minnows to World Champions.

The Danny Roberts Challenge: Difficulty GODLIKE
Author: NepentheZ
Inspired by FM06 legend Danny Roberts, who scored over 1,000 goals for club and country, the challenge here is to emulate his achievements by having a player under your management score 1,000 goals in his career. A straightforward goal but reaching it requires commitment, the right balance of loyalty and ambition and one hell of a player.

rancer890’s FM09 small club to big club Asian/African Challenge

This challenge follows the same small club to big club format as those nominated in the category above but includes extra levels of difficulty. Not only do you have to manage in countries with low reputations in the footballing world, and not only do you have to win the Asian Champions League, you also have to beat the best of the rest of the World has to offer in the Club World Championship. That’s not all as you then have to lead the national side of your chosen nation to the Asian Championship and World Cup titles.

An award for the challenge you have had the most fun participating in or following.

Wallace v Roberts 2009

Back for a second year, this challenge has been a hit again with users taking turns to manage one of two teams for a season at a time as they try to climb the English football ladder all the way to the top. The concept of the challenge creates a lot of good discussion and enthusiasm with the added spice of a keen rivalry as the race to complete the challenge first heats up.

dafuge's FM09 Challenge

Every year, this challenge attracts more and more people as they attempt to transform little-known clubs from across England into European champions. The challenge has been in existence for four years now and is almost certain to be back with greater numbers for a fifth.

Razer82’s FM09 Small Club from a South American Nation Adventure Challenge

Completing the set of small club to big club challenges, this one takes users to South America with the challenge to take your club to the Copa Libertadores title. Whether it’s the State Championships and the huge 3rd Division in Brazil, the multitude of competitions in Mexico or the opening and closing stages and playoff systems of several South American nations, this challenge provides an interesting alternative to the better-known leagues of Europe.

Most Popular Player
This award is intended for a footballer who has become legendary through the threads on the CSE Forum. It could be a world-class superstar or a lower league legend, as long as they have caught the imagination of the CSE Forum.

Andrew Smylie
What is there to be said that hasn’t already been said about Andrew Smylie? A product of the youth system at Knockbreda in the Northern Irish leagues, this player was taken to amazing heights by his manager NepentheZ as he became a goalscoring machine of epic proportions, terrorising defences in Northern Ireland and showing his class beyond that with a prolific scoring record in European competition and at international level. Never mind 1,000 goals, this guy is closing in on 3,000 with his record at the time of writing standing at an unbelievable 2,497 goals in 935 appearances for club and country.

Mag Man Jr.
Ever since it was spotted as a rare feature of the game, many players have hoped to get a son through the youth ranks of their club. mag man not only got that with his Maidstone side in dafuge’s Challenge, he also got an in-game son who was a top class player. Charlie Maggot quickly became dubbed ‘Mag Man Jr.’ and has been one of the most talked-about players in dafuge’s Challenge and Neppo’s Youth Player Project. A glittering career has seen the midfielder player over 900 games for his club with the 1,000 appearance mark in sight along with 36 caps for England. He has also played a major part in Maidstone’s success, having won an incredible 15 Premier League titles and 13 Champions League titles.

Lindsay Zullo
Discovered by d-machine as manager of Queensland Roar in rancer890’s Challenge, this Australian striker broke all kinds of goalscoring records as he helped his club become established as the dominant force in Aussie and Asian football. He also helped his side to the Club World Championship and won the Asian Cup with Australia, later going on to become the national side’s all-time top goalscorer with 46 goals. All of this was achieved by the age of 26 without the player ever asking to move to a bigger club.

Best Failed Challenge
This award is designed for a challenge which has not had the level of success it deserved over the last year.

Extremes of Europe Challenge

This challenge involves taking either the playable club located furthest North, South, East or West in Europe to the Champions League crown. It generated a lot of initial interest with several suggestions for future teams to be included such as the team at highest or lowest altitude but unfortunately, nobody got very far with it.

Can you CONQUER THE WORLD???
Author: Blanco
The aim of this challenge is simple: starting unemployed, to build up a globe-trotting career in which you would win the continental club championship in every continent as well as the Club World Championship and the World Cup. It attracted a lot of interest early on but perhaps the huge scale of the challenge resulted in a lack of progress.

MadWoodster’s International Management Challenge
Author: MadWooster
One of the few international management challenges on the forum, the user had to take a nation ranked below 150th in the world to their continental championship and the World Cup with no club management allowed. An incredibly difficult challenge, perhaps impossible, resulting in not many people attempting it.

Best Challenge Idea
A new award this year to be given to the most original idea from the new challenges that have appeared on the forum over the last year.

Extremes of Europe Challenge
Author: BenArsenal
One of the more original ideas to appear on the forum this year, this is a geographically-based challenge requiring the user to take the Champions League either to the Azores, the Canary Islands, the Eastern seaboard of Russia or the Arctic Circle: the most northern, southern, eastern and western points of Europe.

DodgeeD’s Ten Year Career Challenge
Author: DodgeeD
A really good idea which incorporated moving clubs, something that is often missed out by challenges in CSE. The ten year limit and cleverly designed points system actually encourages people to have the most interesting career possible within the time limit.

“Real London CSE – Small Club to Big Club Forum Challenge”
Author: NepentheZ
This challenge centres around a new club created in the Blue Square South, Real London, with the aim being to take them to Premier League and Champions League glory. What makes this challenge different from the others is that NepentheZ filled the club with fictional players and staff based on frequenters of the CSE Forum, creating an extra incentive as users try to take the club to the top while developing the careers of their own players and the others from the forum.

A simple award, this award goes to the best sign-up you think there has been over the previous 12 months.

The Race for the Whitehouse

A real ground breaker in terms of sign up threads, this thread really set the bar for a story based theme thread rather than a club based story thread. This thread is one of the best examples around for promoting user input, it was practically impossible for people taking part not to make a meaningful input. Another great feature of this thread was the fact it had a set schedule which was brought to a climax with a definitive end to the story.

After Several Tries But No Luck, This Time it Really Could be You…….Who’s Crap!!

A tried and tested formula over the years, ‘It Could be You Who’s Crap’ sees a bit of a twist on standard player sign-ups. Players signing up are given an entirely random Potential Ability to determine their success in life. The title shows the tendency of this sign-up to fail, so credit to Whoopy D for making it work and putting it in the running here.

The Inevitable Domination of Mediocre European Football Clubs (as well as awful Puns)

In a thread with great community involvement, PaulHartman71 has tailored a great sign-up. Those taking part are the CEOs and managers of mediocre nations in Europe and their football clubs, who are given money and other bonuses to try and overthrow the European domination of countries such as England, Italy and Spain.

The sign-ups here haven’t necessarily been successful, but have been underpinned by an original and inventive idea.

The Super Sized Striker Sign-Up

A clever idea from a simple and prevalent concept. While most striker sign-ups use points to determine a winner, here they are only secondary. Strikers from across the globe are cast elsewhere across the globe by LokedOut420, and find it their mission to score as many goals as possible against as many different opponents as possible.

Can you spot the real talent? – An Agents Sign Up
Author: corinthiano
A completely new and innovative idea, originally from bermybhoy, corinthiano asks his sign-uppers to select clubs from a nation’s top league. From here they select one or more young players to represent throughout their careers. They earn 20% of wages and bonuses and 10% of transfer fees, and the winner is the user who makes the most money from a plethora of players.

60 to One
Author: canvey!!, Ridleys and weeeman27bob
A unique idea which incorporated an unprecedented sixty users along with three hosts. It is a refreshing approach with an unfamiliar spin on a fairly basic format. This innovative approach has made the thread an instant hit.

Best Failed Sign-Up
This award goes to the sign-up that you think started well and had good potential, but didn’t continue for a sustained period of time.

Conquer the World… once you’ve conquered Oceania

A brilliant OOTP sign-up before Walcott’s Wonderkids decided to spend some time away from the forums. Eight nations in Oceania were given a considerable £1 billion boost, and would compete against each other in the FOOT (Football Organisations de Oceania Trophy) over two seasons. With new players and managers, prize money would be given for the performances here, prize money to be used for a whole host of different bonuses.

FC Frozen Nuuk – Brought to you by Takuss, Greenland’s most Famous Pub
Author: PluckaDuck
A sign-up with a huge following that was discontinued after the save file was wiped. Greenland would find its place in football, with a new club from the settlement of Nuuk joining the Swedish leagues. With new players from the crop of forumers, PluckaDuck would report on the progress of the club side and the national team.

Strictly French Football

A promising sign-up which just stopped, in Strictly French Football, weeeman27bob took forumers and put them in the French leagues. Here they were partnered up and were scored on their average rating alongside another element, different each round. At the end of a round, the worst performers would get knocked out of the competition.

Best Standard of Sign-Up Updates
This award goes to the sign-up whose author has produced the best standard of updates. The sign-up idea or execution needn’t necessarily be good, but the updates given are consistently well-written and interesting.

The Inevitable Domination of Mediocre European Football Clubs (as well as awful Puns)

The idea of this sign-up is to make smaller European nations into the dominant forces. PaulHartman71 updates every round of both European competitions, and provides bountiful end-of-season updates containing league tables, analysis and a video feature that everyone else has been keen to mimic! Updates like this are easy to read and informative.

The Race for the Whitehouse

Along with superb consistency and great time keeping, the updates in this thread were also a great read. Looking like this, the updates had the perfect mix of detail, drama and aesthetics. canvey!! has really set the bar high with the standard of sign up updates.

The Joys of Versatility – From the Deserts of Djibouti to the International Stage

Not only does LokedOut420 put together video highlights of each Djibouti match in his create-a-player sign-up, but he updates the players’ situations twice a season. The addition of club and league graphics, like in this update, give the sign-up a nice finished product look that make each update a joy to read.

This award will be given to the experiment you think has been the best over the year. You may all have different criteria, and whether the results or the execution is more important, this is your choice.

AI Experiment – The Bandits are back for FM09

This experiment was arguably the first experiment to exist. Without it, this may well be the Challenges and Sign-Ups Forum. Now on its second version, kipfizh has spruced up the format with more ambition, second nationalities and a team to rival the Bandits: The Sheriffs. This just adds extra excitement to the forum’s most endearing and popular experiment.

English Regen Analysis
Author: roversawh7
roversawh7 goes into depth here about a feature that has intrigued many over the years of its existence. Some detailed analysis of the regen production relative to their nations, ability and potential goes with a look in at how clubs spawn, identify and manage talent. This is a true old-style experiment: a haven for the number crunchers.

Any experiment with a personal touch is bound to be a winner. After iacovone poured 20 seasons of blood, sweat and tears into his Forza Savona side, taking them from Italian obscurity to Champions League medals, he hands control to the AI and monitors how they deal with the club, and what effect this has on its close rivals.

Sometimes there is a good idea behind an experiment that never gets realised. A good idea is evident, and it creates the sort of experiment you want to run for yourself!

While some experiments focus on a club, and some focus on the footballing world, all of them draw comparisons with 2009. iacovone’s experiment, which begins 20 years into the future, is a breath of fresh air and something like this could well be the aim of every manager once they hang up their boots: to watch the trials and tribulations of their club without them.

AI Experiment – ‘We aren’t Spanish, we’re Basque!’

The Basque nation has been of great interest to many people over the years, and the idea of a Pays Basque FIFA team is an intriguing one. Dave. follows their adventures as a team and as several individual clubs in an experiment that has seemed to peter out after a month, but had a great idea as its foundation.

AI Experiment – an extreme league in an ordinary world

Experimenters have in the past created one club, or tinkered with the leagues. But has an experimenter before created twenty-three clubs and tinkered with the leagues? More impressive than the individual idea were the ideas behind each of these clubs as Walcott’s Wonderkids put teams such as billionaires, the elderly and “happy campers” in contention with each other.

AI Experiment – The Bandits are back for FM09

A second and more comprehensive version of kipfizh’s legendary original Bandits experiment which has shown us how the AI handles superstar players and a club with a perfect infrastructure. This is contrasted by showing us the progress of the ‘idiots’ and the Sheriffs, a rival to the Bandits with a more volatile setup.

English Regen Analysis

The experiment analyses one of the most important features for any long-term game: the regens. Focusing on the youth system at Blackburn and also the English regens with a high amount of potential, roversawh7 tracks their careers to see if the AI can recognise and fulfil their potential. Such a key issue was bound to produce the important findings it did.

AI Experiment: Players vs Money vs Infrastructure

An experiment encompassing three clubs in the Blue Square Premier, one incredibly rich, one with fantastic facilities, staff and fans, and one with world-class players. The results look at which factor causes greater progression and success for the clubs. Results from this might change your style of playing the game so are important ones.

The first Bandits experiment really set the bar for quality and detail of updates. This time, kipfizh has taken what we learned from the first thread to produce updates of even more in-depth detail which always seem to leave his readers desperate for more! This, for example, shows the level of detail that kipfizh puts in.

English Regen Analysis

Tracking all of those regens over the course of nearly 100 years is no easy task but it has been undertaken in a well-organised and efficient manner with roversawh7 providing a wealth of information in tables and screenshots as well. This post for instance contains detailed information on regens throughout their careers as well as some screenshots from Genie Scout.

This award shouldn’t necessarily go to your favourite user on the forums, but it goes to a user who has made the biggest contribution to the forums over the past twelve months. Think of it simply as: if they stopped posting, the forum would be in a worse state for it.

Where would the forum be without dafuge? Many people, myself included, see or saw dafuge’s challenge as the gateway to the forum, therefore the 18,000 replies there could be said to cause another 18,000 replies through the whole forum. dafuge also closes threads and changes their titles, not for fun but upon request in the Mod Requests thread.

canvey!!
Possibly one of our greatest sign up thread creators and a user who really appreciates what people want from the threads in this forum. He’s had numerous successes with his sign up threads which are always brought to fantastic conclusions and he has had a significant impact in a variety of other threads across the forum. Successes include The Race for the Whitehouse, El Aprendiz: Tú eres Despedidos! and 60 to One.

Lower Leagues Rule
A great all rounder of the forum, LLR has established himself as a quality member of the forum with significant contributions to numerous threads in CSE. It is quite rare for a user to have such a significant impact in such a range of threads but LLR has achieved this with his commitment to JoseRR’s challenge, numerous sign up thread and his own The Outcasts League.

Best Contribution to a Challenge
There are numerous ways to compete to a challenge, whether by completing it, providing good reports or by helping others. Each of these has added, in their own way, that little bit extra to one or more of the challenges here.

His commitment to dafuge's FM09 challenge has been nothing short of phenomenal, with a fantastic story told with detailed updates like this. Nearly thirty seasons of brilliant stories from FC United have made great reading.

Lower Leagues Rule
His dedication to JoseRR’s challenge has been superb, with not only great detail put into his own story with Fafe, but constant encouragement and advice for other people competing in the challenge. His updates like this have showed fantastic attention to detail and have certainly brightened up the forum.

daemonic
A real veteran of the challenges, daemonic has made significant contributions to just about every major challenge on these forums. His incredible levels of success and detailed updates like this have made him a real master of the challenge this year.

Most Helpful User
The CSE Forum can be a daunting place for newcomers. The winner of this award should be the person that helps new people, but also helps other members, be it through voluntarily assisting with running a sign-up, helping a struggler attempting a challenge, or contributing to the ideas thread.

Always willing to give advice, pnefc22 has been a regular in the ideas thread, helping other members getting their threads up and running. He has had a significant impact on the encouragement of less experienced members of the forum.

Always eager to help, hamilton162 has consistently been quick off the mark to give other members advice and encouragement in their threads. His enthusiasm is infectious and really helps to maintain the interest in threads for people.

One of our more experienced sign up thread runners, LokedOut420 has continued to provide high quality updates in threads such as The Super Sized Striker Sign-Up and The Joys of Versatility - From the Deserts of Djibouti to the International Stage. Fantastic threads and highly consistent stuff, especially with the fantastic video clips.

Most Missed User
As we get older, some of us may leave the CSE Forum and opt instead for dignified chats on the Off-Topic Forum while tucking into some humus. Goodbye Wotsits and cheesy beans on toast, hello humus! Therefore, this award isn’t so much a posthumous award but a post-humus award, and is given to the user who has disappeared to the recent scene who we’d all really like back.

wisla_krakow
He returned briefly to finish the excellent Euro 2008...OOTP Style! but it has been a while since one of our pioneers has really been active in this forum. In the early days he really showed the way in terms of sign up threads and the enjoyment that could be had in them.

birdy123
Another founder member of this forum who has since drifted away apart from his continued contribution to The Joys of Versatility - From the Deserts of Djibouti to the International Stage. He always played a big part in the sign up scene and generally had a big presence in the CSE forum.

route1
The sort of person this forum really misses, route1 was the sort of user who took part in sign up threads and gave a really meaningful input. His comments always sparked discussion and gave the writers the ammunition they wanted to create interesting stories.

User of the Future
These users haven’t been in the community for very long, but their great impact from the small amount of time they have been around is evident that they will move on to become a senior member of the community.

Greasy Chip Butty
A user who joined late last year, he has already maintained a popular sign up thread in The fmx-factor 2! and started a criminally overlooked challenge in The 'Gang of Four' challenge. A great, detailed writing style has made him a popular member of the forum already.

hamilton162
Some might see this as an odd choice but in containing his unparalleled enthusiasm, hamilton162 has become one of the most improved users in this forum. His words of encouragement have been priceless in threads such as dafuge's FM09 challenge and he is quickly learning that taking part in challenges is not all about bragging.

brettney1980
If you don’t recognise the name, go and have a look at either Your Nation Needs You! - Signup. or Romani nation Sign up. For a user who only joined this year, he has really set the standard in terms of updates to threads. He was good when he first started but the improvement has been massive, he really has the knack of grabbing the reader’s attention.

Overall

Best Community Spirit within a Thread
This award emphasises the need for a strong community. Give this to the challenge, sign-up, experiment or other thread that has shown a strong community with nice banter.

Neppo’s Youth Player Project – FM09
Not only was posting the reports of your home-grown players a major part of this thread, but taking an interest in others was too. It was good to see people enquiring into the careers of the youth players of others. Dedication to the reports from all involved made this thread an enjoyable one with a strong sense of admiration for the stars of the future.

JoseRR’s FM09 Big Euro Challenge!
It overtook Gundo’s Challenge as the second best this year and part of the reason for it may be its community spirit. Perhaps having a large but manageable number of competitors allowed the evident atmosphere of friendliness as users took care to read other users’ reports and comment on their players. At one point, players took it upon themselves to name someone’s prospect ‘Il Dinosaur’.

Wallace v Roberts 2009
With everybody taking an active interest in the affairs of two jointly-managed rival teams, Wallace v Roberts has generated plenty of community spirit, perhaps the reason for it continuing through a dry patch at one point. Those involved rate the signings of the manager in the hot seat and offer plenty of encouragement. The rivalry is ever-present, but that doesn’t stop some users offering advice to the other team.

Aye, but I would never have had the time to have started it. You also pulled off a little differently to what I'd envisaged, and much much better than I'd expected it to turn out. Would be a decent one to revive in future.
