Smylie you legend!
Smylie you legend!
Well done Nep
Well played Nep, amazing to see Smylie finally make it to 3,000. He's a true legend of the game.
Does this mean the end of the Knockbreda save??
I'll carry on until I achieve at least these goals :
1,000 assist career player.
1,000 goal career player x5
Back to back champions league titles.
Entire season unbeaten.
Full team of youth products.
So I'm in it for the lonnnnng haul
That's the spirit Nep. A truly groundbreaking career \o/
haven't you had an unbeaten season yet?
I've gone unbeaten domestically. But never in Europe.
Fantastic.... I also note Smylie scored FIFTEEN goals in one game in the last season. Jeez I bet you were smiling at that one
Just kidding, 3000 is the most amazing achievement I've ever seen on FM.
Great stuff You got there in the end. Still think it's fantastic you've had both Wallace and Smylie on this one save.
Are you going to let him sit on the bench or keep him going? Presumably you could make the team a lot stronger by dropping him at this point...think that's why achievements like this are so hard - finding a youth player who's good enough to throw straight in, then being willing to keep him in the team even when he's on the decline.
I've kept him in this season, because firstly, he needed to get the 25 goals to reach 3,000. At this current point in time he has:
Played : 36
Scored : 50
Assists : 18
So he's having a great season.
Yeah, but I mean, that only 1.4 goals per game
I remember reading about Paul Wallace with amazement a couple of years ago, but Smylie's just blown his achievement away.
Nep, you truly are the best. Bravo, mate.
Thanks Sir Liam.
And Cheers, mista T - I don't really think I'm the best. Maybe just the most patient.
Smylie still kicking it up this season too, btw. Should be on for a 70-75 goal season, which is immense. And still no sign of retiring
The man is a machine
I would be SOOOOO happy, if age 45 he's still playing
ha ha that would be quality if he played til his mid 40s. If he's still banging in the goals I'm sure he'll still want to keep going. Good luck
When players are happy and playing well, they don't tend to retire, which is brilliant news for you Nep! It's entirely possible that Smylie could play into his 40's given that he's still happy, performing well and because the demands on a player in Northern Ireland are much less than the demands of some of the top leagues in the world!
Haha, who would have thought. That would be amazing, if he completed like, 30-35 seasons with the club. He would probably get around 1600-1700 apps too. Thats crazy.
just been reading over it all. i have fm 2010 but i am so re-installing my fm08 and see if i can do the same thing with my local team cork city. great work nep and smylie
Cheers the greyham. First post too, so welcome to the forums
Ahh, Cork City. I took many a beating from them in the All Ireland Cup in my early years. And actually lost 2-0 to them in my current season too, which I'm none too happy about.
hehe up the rebels. your tactics i have decided to use. won the AIC with ease and only 1 loss after 13 games.
when will you have another update on smylie
Last edited by the greyham; 09-12-2009 at 15:04.
Update will come Wednesday. I'm near the end of the season, but have become very involved in my FM10 save. This is by no means dead in the water, its just taking a bit longer
Knockbreda Parish FC, Season 45 [2052/2053]
First, I would like to congratulate the team of Season 52/53, on winning the 40th Consecutive League Title for Knockbreda. I didn't really initially think much of it, but then wondered just how many generations of footballers I'd been through, from the 1st Season, to the 40th. I so, however, find it amazing that the Right hand side striker position, has only ever been occupied by 2 people over that 40 year period. If I make it to 50 Consecutive league titles, I think I'll do a special post on the history of the players involved
N. Irish Premier Division - Winners
N. Irish League Cup - Runner Up (v Linfield)
N. Irish Antrim Cup - Winners
Champions League - First Knock-Out Round
All Ireland Cup - Semi-Final
N. Irish Cup - Winners
Best Eleven Season
Best Eleven Overall
Fans Player of the Year - Andrew "The Legend" Smylie
Manager of the Year - Craig Douglas [NepentheZ]
N. Irish Player of the Year - Youth Player 1
Andrew Smylie - A spectacular return of 70 goals, form the Striker this season. And he even proved on a few occasions, that he can hit the form he did, in his early years.
Youth Player 1 - 31 years old now, and should be in his pomp, but his attributes actually seemed to have declined. Played an important role this season, and bagged 40 goals in the process.
Another tough season, but I'm enjoying it so much more now there is competition. This was the first time in 3 seasons I didn't lose a game in the League Campaign, and I even lost 2 cup competitions domestically. I've got a good team assembled now, but I'm conceding more goals than ever, unable to achieve the "Less than 10 goals a season" in the league now.
Any sign of Smylie retiring yet? I hope you have an open coaching slot for him!
What is Smylies total now? Does he win fans player of the year every year?
You've not won the Northern Irish league enough.
Smylie has 3,109 Goals now. He won Fans Player of the year at the end of that season, But Youth Player 1 won it for the 3 years previous, but prior to that, Smylie had won it from 2031-2032 season, all the way through to the 2048/49 season.
The odd thing now is, I'm really finding it hard to get another striker that can even score 1,000. I have just signed a guy who is 23, and pretty awesome, but I just don't know how long he'll stay, because he is a great player. Easily one of the best the club has seen. I've had soooo many Strikers in my time, that could get 2,000+ (Castanho, Lee Jolly, Leonardo Troncoso, Alejandro Lopez) - but they were all about the club in the Smylie Golden Years.
They all went on to do great things, too, with Troncoso being Argentina's all time leading scorer, and Jolly eventually went on to win 2 Champions League titles with Knockbreda. Its just that, he was an AMC/ST - So I had to play him in the MC role.
Have you had to fight off interest in Smylie all through his career?
yeah, for years
don't suppose you've had a check to see what his PA was as he's one of the best regens i've ever seen?
I don't use editors.
I wouldn't have thought his PA would be massive though.
I mean, he's nowhere near the best player (attribute wise), ever produced iirc.
He's just got the right attributes, in the right places, to be a goalscoring machine.
Yeah. In my limited experience of creating players, I'd put him around the 170 mark.
Great update! Are Dungiven title challengers?
Not yet. Finding it hard to keep the players who are very good at the club. Hopefully in a few years
Congratulations on the achievement.. I don't know how you managed to play a team for so long, but you've done well.
Also, how do you find out a player's career goals? I've looked in history, obviously, but that just counts the league goals, and the statistics on the bottom of the player's profile just show the current year statistics. Do you have to count the goals he gets each year through statistics and then just add them up? Surely there's a way to find out how many goals they've scored in all competitions somewhere.. I just can't see it.
Edit: Never mind, I've found it. Best Eleven. Excuse me.. and congratulations once more on Andrew Smylie's achievements.. 3000 goals, what an effort.
In a twisted way, Smylie is playing beyond his means this season. I've been playing him as a bit part player, coming on when I'm comfortably winning, and starting games I should really dominate teams in.
In 9 Starts, and 7 Sub apps, he has still managed to bag 15 goals
He's really proving just how awesome he really is. 3,060 club goals now, too. Realistically, 3,100 as a final tally, would be immense. I don't know how long he will keep playing, but his attributes are still worthy of 30-40 goals a season. If his decline continues at the current rate, he can easily play another 3-4 seasons. I'd love that.
Ive been playing since CM2 and i must say ive never seen anything like this game. Amazing job NepentheZ. Wish i could find a Smylie in my games lol
I've been playing this game for a long, long time
I don't remember when I first started playing the save... oh, actually.... I can find out, as I have the post on Gundo's Challenge thread
It was the very beginning of Jan '08. So a full 48 months I've been playing this save for
24 months I think anyway
Yeah, that. Listen, its 6am, I'm tired, and should be asleep, hahah
Haha, likewise mate. KUTGW, has always been fun to read.
Just checking in to say great work Nep!
I actually feel like I have one of my strongest teams ever this season. Oddly, Striker is the position I'm lacking in - I just can't find anyone. I have Mason (Screenshot to follow) - Who is pretty awesome, but he just isn't hitting the goals to game ratio that Smylie did. YP1 has lost a lot of attributes now too, and is pretty much a poor version of Paul Wallace. So I really need 2/3 QUALITY strikers, but there just isn't anyone interested in me..!!
23 Goals in 18 Games, really isn't good enough. He should have 50+ by now. Seriously, I could use any player from my reserves or U-18's, and they would score that many.
Never trust the Scots Nep...
Some very poor physical stats... wasn't that common in FM08 or am I completely wrong?
There aren't amazing Physical stats in FM08, but they're not bad. In this league, they don't really count for too much, either
Didn't Smiley in his prime have 20/20 for acceleration and pace?
It was 18 or 19 IIRC, I don't think he ever had 20.
Still, that's f-ing brilliant for an FM08 Northern Irish player
Hope I'm not invading your thread too much, just have a few more questions to ask. I've taken over QUB, a team floundering in the Second Division of Northern Ireland set for relegation in FM08.. now it is 2012, we've just won the Premier Division in our first season there..
However, does your squad ever turn full-time? I've been able to offer some players full-time contract but most just want part-time. Also, can I ever get more than one coach or physio? My board won't let me sign any. Does this come with winning the Premier Division repeatedly and performing well in Europe, getting reputation up?
I'm also struggling to get finances and my 800 seater isn't exactly shaping up OK but we're in 200K debt so can't see that happening soon. I guess I can't really ask you about that though, it's more my financial incompetence than anything so I doubt you will have a magical answer for me there.
I'm just basically wondering, after winning the Premier Division, if we will continue to improve further.
Sorry to bother you with the questions anyway, and congratulations once more on your achievements.. a fantastic effort.. I would love to see a regen even half as good as Smylie come through the academy some day.. ah, can only dream.
I'm a Pro club. A few others in the division are too. I don't remember the exact league requirements (might be 2 consecutive league titles) - but £5,000,000 in the bank, triggers automatic promotion status. As for the coaches, unfortunately, in FM08, thats hard coded. (Changed for FM10, I believe.) - So what the board offers, will never change. However, you can usually hire 2 or 3 more than what the board allow you. Then the other ways around it, are to sign coaches, once they are a coach in your club, offer them contracts as assistant managers. They will all sign, and the board will not block it, because it doesn't realize what you're doing. You can then sign more coaches, and repeat the process. I only have 6 coaching staff (including Ass Man) right now, but at one stage, I had 7 Ass Men, and 4 Coaches.
As for finances, its tough. I was in debt for a fair bit in my early years, but once you make it that first time to the Group Stages of the Champs League, you're pretty much set up. In the mean time, find your star players, and offer them to clubs for a reasonable amount of money, +50% of future fee. Because of the league rep, you'll never really get more than £1,000,000 for a player (unless they're exceptional, I've sold players for £10,000,000 a couple of times) - but make sure you sell them to a league with a high rep (Premiership, Primera League, Serie A etc) - because when they get sold on, its usually for £10,000,000+, so you'll get a nice £5,000,000+ bump when you least expect it
It takes a lot of time and effort to do anything in N. Ireland, but as you can see by my save, its worth it. I've achieved things here, I never thought I could. It took me 30 years (or more, I forget) - to even win the Champs League. So keep that in mind. Focus on getting a solid squad together to dominate domestically, and the rest will come with time.
If you haven't, start up a career thread, too. I'd love to follow someone else playing in N. Ireland.
And just for a little annoyance, in my Knockbreda game I got a brand new (only 1889 seater) stadium, and it was named after me despite not being on the favoured personnel for the club! You didn't get that did you ;-)!
If only I was as good at the rest of it as you are!
No, I never got that
The first stadium I got, was named after my Ass Man - And then the second stadium is just called "Knockbreda Stadium".
The next one better be for me
Anyway, I have FM10 now but I'll definitely keep playing this save when I have the time, I love the Northern Ireland leagues due to the shorter seasons - it's a lot more fun compared to slogging it out for 40-50 games. 30 games in the Premier Division seems to be definitely the perfect balance for me - not too short and not too long.
Thanks once again for your response, and keep up the great work with Knockbreda. Also, well done Jackyb as well on your success with Knockbreda - I don't think I'm going to be getting a stadium named after me any time soon. They suggested naming the fan club after me - but they suggest that any time you win a cup or a league, so I don't think I'm anything special.
I'm in 2027 with Mountjoy Utd on FM09 and absolutely loving it. I've got 32 million in the bank and nobody to spend it on lol. Love the challenge of getting youngsters that can step in when your big players get itchy feet. Won the champions league last year and the world club championship too. Just got the new 14000 all seater Bailey Stadium named after me and all training facilities are maxed out. We have a total of 16 coaches.
Games get called off for fun earlier in the season and you get an unbelievable pileup from Feb onwards. I keep a first team of 2 players for each position and rotate for every game at this point, resting for a day after the game. You end up playing 10-11 games in a month.
Worthington retired from the national team (that is half full of products of my youth acadamy) last season so I thought here we go. 14 trebbles on the trot and they gave the job to a new 35yo regen manager with no experience.
Have you a career thread, Bigshow? I'd love to read it
Nep has to drag Smylie to 4000 now after the BOTU disapointment
The botu was a sham
Arguably, we won it in normal time. And then to only allow 1 hour for the Extra Time, is stupid.! It was determined by the people online in that partcular hour. Amazing.
Never get 4,000 though
Be lucky to get 3,100 at the rate he's playing
Frank Dunlop (aka YP 1) - Has just become the 3rd play, in Knockbreda's illustrious history, to hit the 1,000 goal mark.
Getting three players to the 1.000 mark is really incredible Nep.
Such dedication to the Knockbreda cause. Brings a tear to the eye :*)
I've been contemplating this save, tbh. I feel I've achieved all I can now. I'm having no luck in the Champions League, and seem like I can't win it anymore. So I'm going to see out Smylie's career (which could be a few seasons yet) - and then take a break, and try to get into an FM10 save. By no means am I retiring though - I did the same thing with FM09, and it only lasted a couple months, before I came scampering back to this
Superb Nep to get 3 players to hit the 1000 goal mark! Any chance of all 3 history pages showing their illustrious history?
When they retire, I've got something planned.
Yp1 is now 32, and Smylie is 39, so it shouldn't be more than 3-4 seasons. I'm not going to keep YP1 in for loyalty reasons like I did Smylie, so he should retire earlier.
Also, I want to get him to 1,000 apps
On the league reset date, I checked Smylie, to see if I could offer him Staff Contract yet. And he had the "Plans to retire on 21.6.54" - - I asked him yo reconsider retirement, and I got the "Will come back to you with a decision in the next few days." Unfortunately, the next few days, wasn't soon enough, as his retirement date was before then. Alas, the great man has now retired, and there is NO staff profile for him. That is the end of the Legend.
Season Update, and Smylie Career update to follow shortly.
What a legend!
Sad day for the forums.
Devastating news Nep. I almost wish you hadn't gone this far to see him retire
Look forward to the final summary of the legend

Stuart Manson - A good first season. Didn't play as much as I'd like, due to the fact I was pushing Smylie to his limits, but he still bagged 58 goals.
Chris Cully came through my youth system this year. He looks pretty amazing. Maybe an instant replacement for Smylie? Hopefully he goes on to be the 4th player to hit 1,000 goals.
Not a great season, again, lost out on a few Domestic Trophies. Really bugging me now, that I can't hold down the 100% domestic record anymore . Not good enough in the Champions League again, either. Really need to look hard at my squad, and focus on getting the team back to where it was, in the glory days.

****ing hell, he was a bit good wasn't he.
A legend retired
In team of the week 250 times . Did you count them all out?!
The end of an era
Thanks for the great memories!
Massive double shock right now.
After 46 seasons with the club, Paul Wallace decides to pick the same season as Smylie, to retire
Frank Dunlop, who only just scraped past 1,000 last season, now the only of the trio left in the game.
Really need to get that next 1,000 goal man
This has been a very, very sad day for the forums and CSE
I'm in tears over here. Can't believe Wallace has packed it in too. The pain of seeing Smylie go must have been too great! Will Dunlop step up next year and play with the intensity of the two combined or will he wilt? Time will tell. This is quite an exciting time in many ways for you Nep, hope it continues to go well.
Not posted here in a while but I've still been avidly following. It's a shame it all ended so abruptly but what an amazing career he had.
Both of them gone? End of an era.
So if one legend retiring wasn't enough, the game kicked you when you were down and retired another! 2 amazing, amazing players who will go down in FM folklore! Our grandkids', grandkids' will still be talking about them in years to come .
Two true FM legends gone there.
Find a new one quick.
I think I have a new one in the making. He came through my youth system this season.
I definitely think he has potential. Technique, Finishing, Free Kicks, Pace, Acceleration, Natural Fitness. Some of the key attributes for a Striker in this league, and he has them already, in the capacity to compete in the N Irish ranks. I hope he's one of the guys that goes on to make it, however, I've seen so many of my youths over the years, who start with good attributes, and pretty much never get better (Youth Player 7 a prime example). I guess they have a high starting CA but a low PA. I hope Cully has a high PA. Because he could be as dominant as Smylie. I don't think he'll ever achieve 3,000+ because the league is more competitive now, and in 10, 15 and 20 years time, when he's still playing, it should be even closer.
However, that being said, as a 16 year old with those stats, he has 12 goals in 5 games, and even scored a Champions League Hat-Trick, on his debut. Ok, it was only against Ararat Yereven, but still. In 5 games, he has 3 hat-trick, 1 brace and a single. He has 4 MotM awards, and 2 assists.
Also, I noticed in pre-season how tall he was. So I've adjusted my tactics slightly, to play a bit more of a longer ball game, and use him as a target man. With his height, and pace, he should be a force.
Definitely a legend in the making. Amazing that they just roll on.. Paul Wallace and Smylie played a season together, but Cully is going to have to go it alone
I just hope I can keep him at the club, like with the others. I'd also like a midfielder or defender, to become a great at the club. So far they've all been Strikers. YP9 (AML C/ST) is a decent midfielder, but he wants to leave, and only has 2 years left on contract, so he'll be one that gets away. YP2 (DC) turned out to be a lot better than I thought he would be. Even though he played for me for 10 years, I sold him to Bolton, where he now plays regularly in the Prem, and is in the National side. His attributes are very good for a DC, and he would be ideal in my team. Gutted
I would just like to add, there is a SMALL silver lining to Smylie Retiring. He was on £125,000 a week. So I've instantly save myself £6,600,000 this season. Which should see my profits double. On top of that, I paid out £2,100,000 in bonuses last season. Smylie had a large appearance fee, and goal bonus, so that should also AT LEAST cut in half. Financially, this team will be much better off

Cully does get to play with Dunlop though Nep
By the way, Smylie must have made an absolute packet throughout his time at you!! Just imagine if he came along and bought out the club
Just about caught up with this all, shame to see a legend retiring. What a career.
