Just to keep you guys updated, (Going to try and keep this thread more active than 1 update per season)

    Smylie : 11 Apps, 32 Goals, 9 Assists. [And 1 in 1 for N. Ireland]
    YP1 : 11 Apps, 21 Goals, 14 Assists.

    My strikers are on form

In the Champions League, I've got quite an easy group, Porto, Fener and Red Star. I lost the first game to Porto 2-0, but beat Red Star 5-2 and now have 2 games v Fener, (who lost to Red Star and Porto) to pretty much secure my place into the knockout stages.

That's a fantastic start Nep The CL Group sounds like it provides lots of oppertunities for Smylie to bag goals!

Just so everyone knows, Andrew Smylie CAN do it in Europe too

[Stats are form the end of the Group Stage]

    Top Scorers :

    Andrew Smylie - 20
    Leonardo - 8
    Phil Evans - 8

So there you have it, he's even miles ahead of the best strikers in the champs league, not just a free scoring machine in the N. Irish leagues.

    Knockbreda Suffer DEVASTATING BLOW

300+ Games after the last league defeat, Portstewart defy all odds, and smash Knockbreda apart in the league 4-1. A Hat-Trick from little knows Greg Ross and a goal from young left back Chris Horner devastated Knockbreda team blown away. Smylie replied for the Knockbreda Globe Trotters in the first half to make the game 2-1, but it wasn't enough. For one of the first times in nearly a decade, Knockbreda were even out played in all aspects of the game.

Must be a strange almost unknown feeling to lose a league game after 300 unbeaten.

Good to see this up and running again, I think Smylie's scoring is almost a bug in the game lol.

When i saw that, i thought Smylie had been seriously injured! A set-back for your aim to take most/all of the records in the FM08 Records thread Nep, but not as bad as Smylie getting seriously injured!

Yeah its odd. I think its the 3rd league game I've lost in about 30 seasons. So nearly 1,000 games.

    Knockbreda Globe Trotters
Nah not injured. His stats are decreasing now though. Shooting has gone down 2 points in the last 10 months. Maybe only 2-3 more 100+ goal seasons left in him.

OH. Also, remember we were discussing me taking over another club that got promoted with no history? Well, Dungiven will be promoted this season, and have never been in any division before. I think I'm going to create a new manager and become the manager of Dungiven too

I'd make sure you have a backup of this save too, though. Just in case becoming a second manager ruins the game for you.

Good luck with it, look forward to the EoS report

Have you considered trying to get Wallace or Smylie (when he retires) to manage a team like Dungiven?

    The Records

Most Wins in a row - 39 Consecutive wins.

    The Transfers - In

Joao Maria - This guy has a lot of potential. Physically, he's not very good, but technically, he looks like he could be amazing.
    The Player

Andrew Smylie - His stats are in decline now, but he's still banging in the goals. Only around 400 to go before he hits 3,000. At the end of this season, he also had 897 games for Knockbreda, along with 103 for N. Ireland, meaning he has played exactly 1,000 career games.

    The Games

Knockbreda 5 - 2 Inter [Champions League Final]
Match Stats | Knockbreda Player Stats

What a game. I went behind in this game 2 times, and with 20 minutes left looked down and out. Manco hit a second to level this up at 2-2, and nothing stopped me from there. Even a missed Smylie Pen couldn't stop him getting on the scoresheet and YP1 bagged a goal too.

    Knockbreda 5 - 0 Institute [NIP]
The reason for this game, is the fact that I started, and finished the game with 8 players from my youth team. 7 of which are involved in the youth player project. YP1 bagged a brace in this, and Smylie picking up 2 as well, with the 5th being an OG.

    Knockbreda 6 - 0 Lyon [Champions League Semi-Final 2nd Leg]
I got absolutely battered in the first leg, losing 4-0. I thought that was it for the Champs league. I thought it was game over. But a sensational home win, with YP1 hitting ALL SIX goals, took me through to the final. And we all know what happened there.

    Knockbreda 1 - 4 Portstewart [NIP]
This is the game that ended another 300+ unbeaten league run. Unreal, really. I had a strong team out, but portstewart inflicted my biggest domestic defeat since 2009.

    Summary

A superb season. YP hitting 94 goals, Smylie scoring 140, and a Champs League win to boot. Domestically, I cleaned up again. I can't really add much more.

I think it was a trick to get his stats up. (Wasn't there a thread in GD some time ago about that?)

Thanks for the replies guys. And yea, C, pretty much what Roman said. I read a thread in GD a whil back, that apparently changes the attribute cost within CA when a player has multiple positions. So for example, 1 point in shooting costs a striker 1 CA point [These figures are random, fwiw, I don't actually know the numbers] - but costs a DC 0.5 CA points. There fore, allowing the player to get higher attributes within the same CA.

    I'll find the thread

IF only. It didn't seem to do anything. - Also, its not rare for me to train new positions..... I'll have you know Smylie was born an AMC - and I made him a ST. I'm the reason he is who he is.

Ok. They beat most teams outside of the top 10. But have only made it to 1 major finals so far. The N. Irish manager has been there for 21 years now. I really want that job, so I hope he retires soon

Not yet. I doubt I'll ever find one either. Smylie is an exceptional player. I don't think I'll ever get someone to get close to 3,000 again.

The N.Ireland manager MUST leave sometime soon. 21 years

What would you do if you did find a guy that could be as good/better than Smylie? Would you stick him into Smylie's position and risk Smylie not getting the 3,000 or would you put him on the left and risk him not getting to three/four thousand?

I'd put him on the left. Well, Youth Player 1 is probably as good as Smylie. His attribuues are very similar. He's already scored over 600 goals for the club from that Left Striker role. Once Smylie retires, he will move over to the right, so I full expect him to get around 1,500 goals.

Although I told you Greg Ross was rubbish [which he really is] he's just scored 2 more goals against me, albeit in a 6-2 WIN over portstewart this time. I might sign him, give him half a season and see what he can do

In the 122 league goals season in 30 games, he hit over 4 per game. Although IIRC, he scored 35 goals in 4 consecutive games that season [9,9,10,7]

Whats crazy is, he's missed 98 League games in his career so far. Even if we take the lower averages, at roughly 2.5 GGP, thats another 240ish goals he could have potentially scored

I signed Greg Ross for £90,000. HE is starting his first game v CSKA Moscow in the Super Cup

I subbed him off at HT. He didn't score.

Knockbreda are of course, already in the CSE League. There's still 4 places left if anyone is reading and interested (and your team meet the criteria) although tbh we already have all of the CSE great sides I can think of

Glad to see this thread back up and running again!

My game with Lisburn Rangers is reaching 2030 and its still annoyingly compelling! I just hate the fact that I have loads of good quality NI players but all 3 managers of the national team refuse to pick a single one of them - preferring free agents with awful stats & thus losing 7-0 or worse every game! Did you ever have that problem Nep?

I just can't bridge that last gap into semis of europe, I have the talent but no luck!

Great thread and keep up the good work!

Strangely not. I have 3 players currently in the N. Irish squad, [Smylie, Youth Player 1, Gary Lappin] - and an amazing THIRTEEN of the N. Irish players are from my youth team, but now play else where. I also currently have 3 players in the U-21's [would be more, but have a few injuries] and an amazing FOURTEEN players in the U-19's squad

    The Records

Most Games Without Losing - 54 Games

    The Transfers - In

    No one of note.

    The Player

Graham Downey - This guy has been at the club for a long, long time. This was arguably his best season. Scoring goals, creating goals, and really stepping up when Smylie was injured or unfit.

Andrew Smylie - Still doing it even at 33. 122 goals this term. Superb return.

    The Games

Knockbreda 2-1 Chelsea [ECC 1st KO Round, Leg 2]

After a 2-2 draw for me away at Stamford Bridge, this was a big game. They missed a Pen, which was nice, but this was a huge win over a very good Chelsea side.

    Summary

A decent season. Aside from the ECC, I won every single competition, [Being 7 of them] - So I can't really complain. Fixture list was crazy at the end of the season due to the CWC and the Super Cup, and ultimately, this cost me further progress in the ECC, as I was playing league games on the Sunday, Monday and Tuesday before the ECC game on the Wednesday. A lot of my team is getting very old now, so I need to start finding some 18-21 year olds to fill the boots in the coming years.

We have a big pile up of fixtures with Mountjoy Utd team in N.Ireland. Always end up with 3 games in 3 days lol. Serious squad rotation needed with mixing up your youngsters with your older pros.

Hi Nepenthez, I read this thread with interest, I'm amazed by your career, to be honest I tend to lose interest in any career I started after 3-4 seasons.

I usually choose to manage small premiership or championship teams but after I'm able to win an European trophy my interest for the game drops down, finding it a bit too easy.

That's why I feel some envy for your fantastic career, I hope I will find a game that could keep me hooked so much.

how the hell do you get such an amazing regen? why was the n.irish league so strong? did u give everyone perfect youth academys? how did you keep the players from big clubs?? why was that Paul Wallace guys value only 65k in his prime? what a bargain he would be.

    Celtic :

Amazing regens for me have been few and far between. In a 40 year career, I've had just 3 or 4 players of note, that have been "Amazing".
The N. Irish leagues are RUBBISH. Absolutely trash. To prove this, I've taken over as a newly promoted club 39 seasons in. I got promoted right away in the first season with them. Apart from myself, Linfield, Glentoran and Portadown (maybe 1 or 2 others) - that standard of the clubs are about as good as the BSP. Thats not even a joke. I have not used the editor at all, either. So no, they don't all have perfect youth academies. I've been lucky with a couple of players in regards to them not leaving. Either high loyalty stats, or the fact that I constantly keep them on 5 year deals, and renew whenever possible has led me to keep a few. I've lost a lot of my great players too, though. And the reason why Paul Wallace was only worth £65,000 in his prime, is because of the league reputation. I sold one of my players to Aston Villa about 6 years ago. The guy is about as good as Wallace. I sold him for £50,000. (His market value was £12,000 ) - He's now worth nearly £8,000,000 quite simply because of the reputation of the English league.

So Nep, have you tried the FM10 demo or will you be staying with your FM08 save?

Be difficult to leave it and start again, I would imagine! You've plenty more to achieve with your new team as well.

I've downloaded the FM10 Demo. Not yet installed it. Have been so busy with work the last 10 days, and had some personal stuff going on too, that I've only managed to get to the 5th game of the new season since my update. I might have to see out Smylies career, and call it a day on this, unless FM10 is rubbish, in which case, I'll be back on the 08 boat quicker than you can say Knockbreda Parish Football Club of Northern Ireland have won the European Champions Cup.

Yes, you've got to see out his career.

I think you will be pleasantly surprised when you do come around to playing FM10 though.

But it's always a wrench to finish with a much loved save and start a new one.

I felt that when I had played until 2020 in FM08, with Harpenden Town. Started in the BSS, got promoted first season, stayed in the BSP for about 10 seasons then got relegated.

Didn't know how I could possibly move to FM09. Then I got sacked.

(His market value was £12,000 ) - He's now worth nearly £8,000,000 quite simply because of the reputation of the English league.

oh right cool yeh, just wandering, i've not been as lucky to get any gems really, always have to buy my regens! kind of tempted to manage in N.Ireland then, see how far i can get in europe.

At 34 years of age, I have just had the 1st Transfer window in 18 seasons, where there were no bids for Smylie. \o/ - Success.

Also, taking all goals in to account (ofc, not friendlies) - Smylie is now just 158 away from that magical 3,000 goal mark, at which point, I will end this save game. (Unless FM10 is pants. And then I will carry on )

    Edit : 155 away now

For the sake of some personal glory, I'm just about to embark on my first ever NIP game, where all 11 players starting the game, are from my youth team. (9 from the YPP Thread, Smylie and Downey). There is only 1 player out of position, YP2 playing DL when he is actually a DC. Lets hope my youth team can pick me up a sensational win.

Aside from the fact that YP8 got injured after 30 minutes, the game panned out pretty well

Fantastic to see you carrying this on - hoping Smylie makes it!

I'd be amazed if he doesn't. As long as he doesn't retire at the end of this season, we should be fine. About 150 to go now, should bang in another 30-40 this season, leaving just 120 max for next season. 'mon Smylie

    I hate you.

He's just been injured for 3 months, ruling him out of the rest of the season. 140 Goals short. I don't think its career threatening, however, and injury like this, to a guy of his age (now 34) - will see his stats decline MASSIVELY. It could mean the 3,000 mark is not met

    You're sorry, are you.

Well, you best be. Because Smylie has 115 caps for N. Ireland. The all time cap holder has 119. Because of this injury, Smylie will probably never play for N. Ireland again (He was only used as a sub for the last 18 months).

    So thanks.

You might have answered this before but I'll ask anyway: how come you've never managed the national team? Would have thought you'd be a dead cert for it if it came up!

    Yeah same with me, CV

When others link a thread, I never need to.

But yeah, basically, I can't manage N. Ireland yet, because the current manager has been there for 23 sodding years

Its pretty weird. Most managers get sacked so quick. The England manager got sacked after winning Euro something or other. N. Ireland manager has only ever qualified for 1 major tournament, and seems unsackable. And there we all were, thinking SI were anti-that option

    I've been Reading this for a little while...all I can say is...wow I thought 45 goals in a season was good =P.

I hope we can see his retirement, after reaching 120 caps and 3000 goals, and not a moment before.
