Bought that for myself in the Steam sale - haven't installed it yet though. I'm sort of scared to, in a way!

I'm tempted to get a few microsoft points with the money I got, but is it really worth it?

X box? Burn it. PC is better in every regard

No it isn't. You may argue that the benefits of PCs outweigh the benefits of consoles but you cannot say that one beats the other in every regard, because that's just wrong.

The Xbox (or any games console for that matter) is more enjoyable than the PC (games wise) because, for me, that's all consoles are - games.

The PC Games aka, Football Manager, is more of a passion!

I'm joking of course, but Xbox's/PS3's are more for fun than anything else, in my eyes.

What consoles do, they do very well but to me, consoles are for bite sized fun, the PC for, as HotChoc said, passion and in depth.

The likes of Football Manager (in the depth we get), World of Warcraft, Starcraft etc etc would never work on a console with the depth we have.

    Hence I go for PCs.

I only use PC's for FM, not interested in anything else a PC has done.

Merry Christmas folks. Been stuck at my parents for 4 days, with no FM to keep me company. My hands are starting to shake, and every now abnd then I get hallucinations of signing players.

Last night I dreamt, no joke, that my title opponents in FM had dropped points and now I was clear to be champion. Sad to wake up and find out it wasn't true. When this sort of thing happens, I may be taking the game a little too seriously.

I suppose hallucinations is the next step, the voices I hear telling me they are unhappy with my team talks and want first team football might not even be real.

I was in the bath last night, reading the ant and dec autobiography (a great read, just saying) and half way through, I started to contemplate something. What am I doing with my life?

All day yesterday, I was on Football Manager, okay, I did go into the real world for a bit and did have dialog with real people but still, the majority of my day was on FM. I was intrigued as to if anyone else has ever thought, 'it's just a game, the amount of time I spend on it is ridiculous, I should stop'?

But then, just like when you try to eat 5 a day, you get a bad result/good result/job change etc and you're hooked again. The same as trying a bag of crisps/bar of chocolate or pizza, you suddenly forget all about 'fruit'.

Is it just me who finds this 'odd'? I only think about it when away from the game, of course

Thoughts like that is pretty normal and common. When in my FM periods I play the game a lot. Probably more than I should. The thing is, though, it's fun. Certainly a lot more fun than converse with relatives over stupid crap our cat couldn't care less about, or watching filth on TV.

It would of course help to live in a place slightly less desolate than here, where stuff actually happen, as going down to the local pub and listen to crap music all night long is only slightly more enticing than checking how far into my eyes I can stab needles before my sight goes even more down the drain.

I've spent the last couple of weeks unable to play FM and I can't say I've managed to do anything more productive in that time. I got a bit of work done, but the only difference was I didn't leave it until the last minute, I'd have got it done anyway. A lot of the time I'd have spent playing FM I've just spent on the forums, watching TV or playing PS3.

I do sometimes think about what I could accomplish if I didn't play games at all. What if I spent all that time practicing and writing songs on my guitar? Or I spent it working on my PhD? Or exercising?

But then I think if I didn't play FM I'd just find another way to kill time, I wouldn't spend it productively either way. I still get my work done, I still practice and write songs on my guitar and I still get to the pool and swim. I'm just thankful the thing I do to kill time isn't destructive to me or my relationships and doesn't drain my wallet beyond the £20 or so per year for the game.

If I didn't play games, I'm sure I'd get a lot done around the house and with the wife. But then I wouldn't have any fun!

I think it's safe to say that nearly all of us on here aren't addicted like some little kids are to the Xbox/PS3, which is obviously a good sign.

But it still does make me wonder what I would do without FM, if I didn't spend the holidays playing it for almost all day, would I actually get something productive done? Work? Exercise (as SnakeXe said). Or would I just mope around the house all day doing virtually nothing, it's an interesting thought, but one experiment I will never take part in

I must say the PDC darts are a perfect accompaniment to a FM session. Who says men can't multi-task?!

As hobbies go, FM must be up there as one of the best for value for money. Based on my current game time, and the price I paid for FM12, it works out at 7p an hour already! If I didn't play so much FM, I'd probably end up going to more live sporting events, maybe once a week. The atmosphere at a live match is usually amazing and impossible to replicate in a game, but works out pretty expensive if you attend regularly. I still go to a handful of live games a season, not just football too, but playing FM gives me the sporting fix I need without breaking the bank account.

Gents, I don't suppose any of you could do me a favour?

Basically any of you who have won trophies that count towards Hall of Fame at two or more clubs/countries, I'd really like to take a look at your hall_of_fame.dat file, which on my Windows 7 install resides in Users > Public > Documents > Sports Interactive > Football Manager 2012. Basically through playing my save on two different computers I only have some trophies in each file, and I'd like to work out how to merge them. The obvious thing I tried was to open them in Notepad and paste the two together but that didn't work. I'm hoping if I can take a look at some other files, particularly those with multiple clubs/countries, then I might be able to work it out.

A really minor, cosmetic thing, since all I'm missing from one file is a single Premier League win, but would just be nice to have it right.

Drop me a PM if you can help

That's how I have spent my last few afternoons and evenings perfect combination, plus the missus likes the darts so it's win win.

I often think the same too...I mean, I'm a grown man with a wife and son and yet I still play a game quite a lot. Couldn't or rather, shouldn't I spend my time more wisely? Don't get me wrong, I always make time to be with the missus and my boy but I mean, shouldn't my time be spent on things that actually matter in real life like excercising, reading, home improvements etc. I often wonder if I spent the time I spend on FM on other things then I'd probably get a lot accomplished...but then as has been said, for the enjoyment I get out of the game and considering how little it costs in comparison to time spent on it, I think it's justified. If I wasn't on FM I'd probably spend more money down the pub or end up watching the crap on TV that the missus watches.

I think when FM starts to take over my life (which has come close a few times!) then it's time to start prioritising...but until then, I guess it's ok for us to play FM .

As for New Year...we're round friends for a few drinks...but it won't stop me thinking about taking Coalville Town to the Football League on my save .

I was wondering if you guys could give me some advice.

I've got a thread on this forum (Move aside, Barcelona), which I'm updating fairly regularly and putting quite a bit of effort into, but it's not getting any comments whatsoever. Now, I'm really enjoying the save and will play it regardless, but I'm wondering if I should just stop updating the thread, since it seems a bit pointless for me to continue it when no one is interested in reading it. I suppose the career of someone managing an already established club isn't too appealing to people.

So yeah, should I stick it out and keep updating, or should I just not bother?

Keep updating it, there will be people who are reading it that just aren't commenting (I'm one of them) sometimes they don't comment and don't realize they haven't.

Usually once you've done a few seasons you get more and more interest.

I read every thread on here, including yours (both of them!). Was gutted your first one was lost and am interested in seeing how you eventually topple Barce with Espanyol.

    Happy New Year

As for posting in threads I am getting more and more limited time so I only read threads that have an interesting title and over a page of content. Out of those I comment on those I find interesting so it reminds me to read them if updated. There are a few users who I read the threads of no matter what because I like there writing style and layout.

Just as a side thought maybe the "veterans" could post up some guides about BBCode and style so new users can read and have an idea of how it all works and maybe the style they want?

    Happy New Year all!

I want to make some time to play more FM in the coming year. Maybe a bit more on my FM10 save to see if I can continue with Vermeer's record breaking goal scoring and also to see if I can get that new St. Albans City stadium named after me! And also, I want to start an Italian save on FM12. Anyway, I hope everyone on here is enjoying their current FM saves!

I don't know if any of you have been checking out the Steam sales or trying out the Steam Gift Pile objectives? Just thought I would mention that I have completed a bunch of the Steam Gift Pile objectives and I now have an inventory with a bunch of stuff that I don't want! So, would anyone like any of the following: Saw (full game), 50% off Patrician IV, 50% off Silent Hill Homecoming? Let me know. Will trade, especially for some coal!

BTW, if anyone wants to add me on Steam, my username is Crouchaldinho. Would be nice to see some of you guys on there.

    Happy FMing for 2012 everyone!

My reading pattern is a bit similar to this. I don't have the time or inclination to read everything, but the threads I read I actually read.

As to BBCode, you don't really need that if you use the advanced panels and such. Maybe it's not on by default (think so tho) so may need to activate it in forum settings. Then it's basically like typing in Word, with buttons for Bold, Italic, Font size, Links, and a whole lot of other stuff.

    BBCodes are here though.

Thanks for that link, it should prove useful

Personally I write everything in Word and then paste it into here. I just set-up templates for pre-season, mid-season, etc, so writing my updates doesn't take too long.

I started off stealing ideas from other peoples' updates but slowly developed it into my own style to suit how I wanted to write.

I do this too as I find it a lot easier plus there's no chance of losing your writing if you've typed it all and then the page crashes...which has happened to me before, very infuriating.

Happy New Year too to all of my fellow FMCU's

I tend to use many links in the updates so prefer to write it in the forum and then fix the links there. But I copy it over to Word every now and then just in case I lose it, particularly just before hitting submit because losing a good hour's work is not something I fancy. Thankfully the forum itself can sometimes retrieve it, however, as it saves what we write. There is a button on the bottom left under the text area that should retrieve what you have written in case you lose it. This happened in my recent update as I started writing hours before so the token expired before I actually posted the thing Had it backed up in Word, but the forum retrieved it for me.

Think we all start out by looking at other people's styles and then customize it to fit with our own style and preferences. I've changed mine over the seasons too, but am fairly pleased with my current format. Probably write too much most of the time so can imagine very few people actually read it and just check the league table, but I like to write them out properly so I can enjoy reading it further down the line myself.

Yours is one of the few threads I read but haven't commented on it, i think you either have to be very brief or very deep

    Happy New Year all!

As for my writing style I write it all in the browser, but if it's an update that's taken me a while I do a quick CTRL+A and CTRL+C just in case the token has expired. I usually have a little think about what I'm going to say as I finish off the season/take screenshots, I find that makes the final prose flow better.

I'll c+p it into Notepad if I'm worried. I'll also take notes throughout the season on things in there

I use a quite simple format although I'm looking to change it over the next few updates, get a few more images into the updates rather than full of links.

I like to read the updates of everyone's, but sometimes you just don't have enough time and have to settle with just looking at links.

I got some good football books for Christmas, which I think will get me back in the mood for some virtual football management.

My mother-in-law bought me the new Jonathan Wilson book, Nobody Ever Says Thank You, written about Brian Clough, which should be an excellent read. Looking forward to starting this!

And my brother-in-law got me Patrick Barclay's book on Mourinho, called Further Anatomy of A Winner (at least, I think that's the title). Anyone read it? Is it any good?

I have a feeling that these will impact upon my managerial style, so you can expect a reinvented arrogant and egotistical Crouchaldinho in my next FM save.

On an unrelated note, my parents bought me Ian Ridley's new book There's a Golden Sky. Another book that I'm really looking forward to starting. It's written by the current St. Albans City chairman.

Also, someone has passed on some books to me to borrow, which I have on my 'to read' pile. I've finished Matchday: What makes Saturday special? by Chris Green. A decent enough read. I have The Ghost of White Heart Lane by Rob White and Julie Welch, plus Brian Moore's autobiography, The Final Score, both still to read. I'm also reading the Luton Town history, Staring into the Abyss, on and off, which somebody let me borrowand is quite an interesting read so far.

Just thought I would share. Anyone get any good football books for Xmas or in the sales?

Genuine question and not meant to antagonise: Is the book balanced or is it a lot of whinging about the FA being heavy handed? I ask as I have read a lot of Luton fans about their plight but not many acknowledge that they actually got a lenient sentence. Two lots of administration as a result of spending money they just didn't have. It gave them an unfair advantage at the time of the spending.

I haven't got to that era yet. The book is actually a history book, detailing the various calamities and crises that the club has faced during its existence culminating in the most recent episode. The idea of the book is almost to say that the most recent kind of crisis that the club has faced is nothing new in some senses and that the club has had many unfortunate episodes in the past also. The preface and introduction talks briefly about the most recent crisis and it seems pretty balanced to me. And, for what it's worth, when talking about the issues the club has faced in the past, the book has been pretty open about the club's flaws and who was responsible and so on. I'm not a Luton fan, btw, although they are a local club that I have a soft spot for.

I bought the Enke one for myself before Christmas, and just finished it. Got 'Inverting the Pyramid' for Christmas though it'll probably be some time before I get around to it.

I've actually never read a football book - well, apart from some autobiographies. But I'm currently re-reading the Hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy (there is a Hitchhiker-motivated update here btw), which is an excellent series, and still have not finished War and Peace, which I started several years ago and have been reading on and off. Should probably start over now tbh, as it's been in a box for too long for me to even remember where I was last time around

Have heard many great things about Inverting the Pyramid, so if I were to pick up a football book that would probably be it.

That's the one football book I want to get. I never read a football book before, and the two books I got this past Christmas were 'Moneyball' (baseball) and 'The Lost Dream' (about Mike Danton). The latter I would say is a fascinating read even if you're not into hockey.

Interesting coincidence (maybe). Earlier today I came over an old article with an interview with Henry, the Liverpool owner. I was amazed to read he planned to use statistics when figuring out what players to buy, like he apparently did with the Red Sox in the US, which was based (as I understood it) on amongst others things this "Moneyball" book. Seems like an incredibly inappropriate way to locate signings if you ask me. Not everything is visible in statistics, and as we all know statistics can lie (sometimes grotesquely so).

Maybe known, but according to him Carroll/Torres were so pathetically expensive because it was basically up to Newcastle, because Liverpool wanted 15 million more for Torres than Newcastle wanted for Carroll, to finance the buy of Suarez (spit) too. Think we all knew it was a ridiculously good deal for Newcastle at the time, which looks even better with 20/20 hindsight vision. If the Carroll buy has been loosely or strongly based on his stats with Newcastle in the Championship, hopefully (or rather not) Liverpool have learnt their lesson.

Just goes to show, if correct, that you want people with football knowledge to make the crucial footballing decisions in a football club, not business men. After all, he has admitted he knew next to nothing about Liverpool prior to buying the club, and I suspect football more generally too.

Moneyball won't work in football IRL, because it's not like a statistics heavy sport like baseball. There has been some studies on sabermetrics in soccer/soccernomics but I'm not sure how successful they can be applied onto the pitch. I will have to say though, in FM I pretty much use the 'Moneyball' philosophy to find and sign players.

Henry can waste money however he wants though, as I hate the clubs owned by him abroad and stateside.

Flamers, I tried to add you on Steam, so hopefully you get a message when you're next online. If not, I also joined your group.

Hrbfcrule, funny you should be browsing this thread, as I found you on Steam through Flamers and so added you as a friend.

Deisler, I couldn't find you via your SI Games username.

As for people trying to find me, it is caps sensitive? If it is, my name is Crouchaldinho with a capital 'C'. Not sure that would make any difference though, surely?

I think the the closest thing to sabermetrics we have in footbal is Fulham's run to the Europa final/Leicester's few seasons under MON. The punching-above-their-weight teams.

Go here in order to join it - http://steamcommunity.com/groups/FMCU

It's pretty blank at the moment. I'll try to get some details and some pictures sorted out.

If anyone who knows there stuff on Steam wants to be an admin, let me know (I'm looking at you Flamers!) and I'll add you. I'm not too great at this stuff, so happy to add some admins to be in charge of it.

Guys, I am now struggling with motivation to play FM. I usually do around this time of the year after 2-3 months of solid play. Any advice on what game to try would be appreciated. I dont use editors and wont either - too many threads on here get far too many crashes with editors.

Try emulating something. Have an entire squad of one nationality, follow a specific tactical framework, attempt to win the title on different continents, follow a specific manager's career path. The choice is yours really.

Actually done something with my profile for the first time ever. Didn't realize that the notification for the sending of a friend request was so hard to spot, and the program was being unresponsive so sorry if it ended up sending a few to the same person, though it would only have happened to one person I think if it did.
