I very rarely buy games on release date. NHL 12 is probably the only other game I buy every year on release. I buy a year behind on FIFA

Yeh il be trading a few games for MW3
Don't care for "shoot all that moves" games, but strategy can be quite interesting. Shame my computer didn't tackle the huge maps on Civilization IV very well, but I'll give it another go when I buy a new computer (V was crap).
I only recall being so bored by two games I traded them in before finishing my first go-round. MW2 and Alpha Protocol
Hi guys, I'm back on the subject of buying a new computer.
I finally have a little bit of money to spend (min. £500, max. £600) in order to replace my old laptop, which is more or less on its last legs. I'm really struggling on what I should buy. I don't even know if it would be best to buy a laptop or a desktop!
I was thinking of getting a desktop but the main issue is that I have no monitor or any of the other bits and pieces you need. The bonus of a laptop is that you don't have to worry about that, of course. Basically, I want the best spec I can get for my money and if that's a desktop, I'll get a desktop, and vice-versa.
What I really want is a machine for intensive use. I'm on my machine for huge amounts of time. I wouldn't call myself a gamer particularly but I do play some games and therefore need something decent to cope with that. The main thing I do with my computer is use the Internet a great deal and play games like FM and Minecraft. Therefore, I want the best processor and RAM I can afford for Football Manager purposes. Then, I also want a decent graphics card which will cope with Minecraft with the top settings. So not extreme gaming by a long distance but some ability to cope with the quite basic level graphics in Minecraft and that sort of thing.
I found this website - http://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/ - which seems to allow you to customise desktops and laptops. They build it for you, which is perfect for me, because I really don't have the confidence to build myself.
I'm pretty sure I want an Intel i5 or i7, whatever I can get. I'd also like 4GB RAM minimum. The main thing is that I have no idea at all what constitutes a good graphics card. I don't need something amazing, just enough to play FM with high 3D settings if I want, and the same with Minecraft on high settings. Any advice guys? I'd really appreciated it as I'm struggling to work out what would be best for me.
No great advice I can give Crouchy, although I did use pcspecialist myself for my PC. Given that you don't have a monitor and looking at what you've specified you want, getting a desktop may require a budget adjustment. I'll try and get back to you in a bit more detail tonight
id say a Desktop is do able with that budget IF your not fussy on monitor keyboard etc. for instance my bro bought a perfectly working 19" flat screen off ebay for a tenner ive got a logitech mouse n keyboard for my mam for a little over £6 i would say buy the monitor keyboard and mouse from ebay and then you will have about £500 left (providing you can stretch to the £600) to build the desktop.
you can pick up a 19" half decent monitor for anything under £50.
do you have an operating system for it? as ive found a i5 for £450 (will need to add a GFX card) and a OS
No, I also need to buy Windows 7.
Backup goalie got injured right after buying him. Then my main goalie got sent on international duty in early September. Backup goalie got back from a 2-month injury just days prior to our match. He's only on 81%, but at least I can stick him between the posts.
Has anyone successfully persuaded an agent to drop a minimum release clause and a match highest earner clause? I can get rid of one of them with no problems but not both...
There are some nice guides there too, perhaps this is useful: http://www.notebookcheck.net/Noteboo...de.1311.0.html
This is a bit technical, but you can compare the performance of different graphics cards and processors.
This site is just for laptops I think, but you should find plenty of info there.
If you mainly want a new computer for games performance, you probably get better value for money in a desktop as laptops usually skimper on graphics cards and even CPU to lower the price as most use the laptop to office tasks and internet anyway.
If you're looking for a desktop instead it's great if you can put it together yourself as you tend to save money that way. But if you're not comfortable doing that it's better to let somebody else do it. Sounds like pcspecialist may be one good option. In any case, here is an excellent site for hardware info. Not sure if they have price comparison with specs and such, but it's worth a visit anyway: http://www.tomshardware.com/
This looks to be a good site too, although they focus on overclocking: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/
This is an excellent site for comparing prices and specs. It's in Swedish though. There must be English sites like this too, but I gave up googling now. You can probably google translate or babelfish it: http://www.prisjakt.nu/kategori.php?k=328
computer jargo confuses me :s
Ok. It's time to start the awards again. Any one interested in helping? Or ideas for categories? Speak now or forever hold your peace!
erm aye ill help
OK anyone as weird as me in that ive sat and sorted through all the playable nations getting kits for the clubs you can start with in FM11, my next task is to update these to the 11/12 colours, then start adding kits for non playable leagues, so its not something im doing when i get my hands on FM12
maybe the same categories as last year maybe?
Anyone got a link to last years awards?
Do people prefer to see screen shots in a thread or links to the screen shots? Anyone know why my screen shots are so small since the forums have come back up?
who are you using to upload them?
imageshack it worked before the shutdown but now they are hard to see at times.
Looks like they are getting resized automatically, that screenshot should have looked like this.
Personally I prefer to stick with images as links, it makes the pages load faster and it means I'm a lot less likely to run into bandwidth problems with photobucket.
i prefer links in general, and yeas image shack auto resizes
I can't be the only person who loses interest in playing the current FM as soon as next year's is announced...
Anyone else as excited as me about the add and remove leagues? I was looking for a move from Spain to Africa but due to limits I only had Egypt loaded with FM12 I will be able to remove all the leagues I no longer need and replace them with a bunch of African leagues. Once I am done in Africa I would like a move back to Europe but can only choose England or Spain FM12 would allow a few more leagues in Europe to be added. I cannot wait to start a new journey man save and a career update thread I can stick too for a long long time.
It is superb for journeyman careers, just a bit of shame I've done one with FM11 and wasn't planning on one for FM12.
You planning a one club save again?
I would like to know if we can switch the leagues between playable and view-only so we do not lose the history of the loaded leagues and such. Also curious to see how the past history of a non loaded league works.
Yes, I'm looking to do a one club, small nation type game to really try out the DLR in the long term. I'm thinking probably Northern Ireland.
I always fancied that in Malta or Faroe Islands. I did create a World Champions League to try it out in New Zealand but never got round to it.
I probably won't get FM12 either because I really want to continue my FM11 save
the remove/add leagues has changed my mind. Depending on how it affects the slightly slower pcs.
I'm on the fence whether to start my FM12 career when it's out. I'm really having a lot of fun in my latest career save. I'll preorder it as usual and download on release day though.
I'll have a newer laptop for FM12, so I'll go straight into a Leiria career
I've had to go back to FM10. Simply as I've got a new laptop, but I've managed to get my FM11 disc stuck in my old laptop No point in buying a new one for a month.
Just had my 'Arsenal' moment. Lost 5-2 to F.C Porto for my biggest defeat in 12 years and the end of my 61 match unbeaten league run. Do I abandon my Portugual-only principles or continue?
Wouldn't describe that as an 'Arsenal moment' - they reached a nadir after years of gradual decline and a few months of steady decline. Sounds like you just had one bad match!
Can't you download from Steam without the disc?
Yeah if he activates it on Steam on the old one, then he'll just be able to download it on the new.
Wait, so how do you do that?
I think it's quite simple:
1. Open Steam.
2. On the menu bar, go Games > Activate a product on Steam.
3. Enter your CD key.
Don't know if any of you guys have seen this but it's good to see that we're not the only recluses around here! ;) He's around 27-28 I think so he'd of been playing the Champ Manager which then went on to what we now know as Football Manager (not the carp that is Champ Manager now! ).
That's a great spot
New computer coming next week! \o/
I'll finally have a bit more power to work with for FM purposes. Could totally change the game for me.
I'm getting an Intel i5 Quad core 3.3GHz with 8GB RAM.
Will I be able to pile on the leagues with that or what!
You should notice a big difference with that, although half the RAM won't get used unless you've got some other memory intensive stuff running at the time.
dafuge I max 4GB a lot of the time and will be upgrading to 8GB any time soon. As people want more multitasking it will be needed.
Crouchy that sounds awesome, it should run anything with the right GPU
Plus, I do multitask a lot. I guess the RAM will help out with that and I can have plenty on the go at once.
I seem to recall reading somewhere that FM only uses 4GB max anyway. Not sure if that's true though.
Well, you can tell if I got a decent GPU then! I ended up getting an Nvidia Geforce GTS450 (1GB). Hopefully it's a half decent card.Crouchy that sounds awesome, it should run anything with the right GPU
From what I read, it's kind of mid-range. Not an extreme gaming card, or anything like that, but a little better than a low end card. Maybe a card for casual gamers?
Anyway, I read a review of the card which suggested that it will run really well for stuff like FM and The Sims. My wife plays the latter, so she'll be pleased, and I might end up giving 3D a go on FM12 after years of dedication to the dots!
To be honest, the only games I really play are FM and Minecraft anyway! Do you reckon I'll be able to run Minecraft on max settings? Hopefully, I'll be able to load a ton of leagues on FM too!
I'm really looking forward to getting my new computer anyway. I have a feeling it might renew my love of FM because it'll speed things up considerably for me and perhaps make it almost feel like a brand new game!
Playing FM on a new computer is awesome, it makes you wonder how you managed before with all the loading times
I've been stuck on this old laptop for too long. Just the thought that I could, for example, double or treble the amount of leagues I load is fantastic!
I'll probably be amazed by the difference. It really could improve FM to an amazing degree for me.
Crouchy yes even you are going to give 3D a try.
You're going to need the 8GB ram, I think FM will go 64 bit in a couple years at the latest. Or at least till you get a new computer after you're done with this one I'm quite sure about that.
I think what I'll probably end up doing is watching highlights on 2D Classic and then switching to 3D for replays of goals!
Well, I'm glad I got it then. I'm hoping this computer will be 'future proof' for quite a while, so that's why I went for the RAM overkill. You're going to need the 8GB ram, I think FM will go 64 bit in a couple years at the latest. Or at least till you get a new computer after you're done with this one I'm quite sure about that.
I hope the graphics card will do the job too! Although I suppose I can always upgrade it easily enough in the future.
I'll never play with 3D.
It could have the latest Fifa engine and I still wouldn't use it!
Good news Crouchy on the new PC. Getting mine completely sparked a revival in interest for me in FM! I anticipate it'll be similar to you. One word of warning though...switch from the dots and I will never speak to you again ;)
Don't worry though, I'll remain faithful to the dots, mainly because I still feel it's the best way to watch a game from the point of view of a tactical manager. For the tactical coach, like myself, it's still the superior method to watch and analyse your choices, in my opinion. ;) Seriously though, I always feel better able to tell what my team can improve upon, and to analyse games, using the 2D Classic mode.
But I think having the ability to use 3D will lead to me watching goal replays in 3D. Pretty sure you can do that, can't you? Set the replay camera to 3D but still watch in 2D Classic?
You are correct - you can set replays to be 3D (a nice touch). I actually have that setting myself.
As for 2D and tactical analysis - I'm inclined to agree with you. I wouldn't know though, being so utterly hapless at the tactical side of the game ;)
Also a question for those still awake:
When you update your thread and add hyperlinks to images what is the quickest method? (I can't believe I just asked this given how long I've been on the forums...!)
My method (which I think is the fastest goes like this:
Get URL for my image.
Click the globe and chain icon.
Paste URL link.
Then find the text between the [ url] and [/ url] tags and edit to what I want it to say.
Is there a faster way? I seem to remember a while back that the hyperlink icon would let you paste the URL and then ask what you wanted the link to be called?! Where did that go?
STOP! Before anyone berates me for being an absolute cretin (for almost 5 years) I've just read the forum guidlines and worked it out. I CANNOT BELIEVE I've not done this sooner! New posts will take half the time in future. Hooray!
Welcome to the cutting edge of forumming, iacovone ;)
well my games playing is going to get alot slower, as will only have nights to play this i start a new job in the morning.
Ooh. My new laptop is making me swoon a little. From 1/2 a star performance, up to 2.5 stars with exactly the same setup

All this computer talk is making me drool.
You all got new desktops right? I'm still debating between desktop and laptop...the only problem I have is not price but a lack of space.
Hollow out your wardrobe rancer. Convert your clothes to curtains and bed sheets, thereby doubling up as both insulation/shelter and actual clothes! Plus with a desktop in your wardrobe, you'll seem like the cool fashionista at University to anyone fortunate to drop in at Casa di Rancer ;)
lol desktop all the way, one comment from me
i7 + 12GB of ram
Is this the geek version of comparing **** size?
It's all a substitute for sticking it in the hole ...
I'm also hoping for good things from the "tone" addition to team talks. Finally I can give that player who's "looking complacent" the hair dryer treatment, but also tell the "playing nervously" guys to just chill out, dude.
I've been discussing this forum in various other places and I'm keen to hear people's opinions on the format this forum seems to have taken.
At first glance at the front page, this forum looks no different to the FM Stories forum. It looks like it is just a load of story threads on people's careers, which isn't really what it is supposed to be about. The main thing that is supposed to distinguish us from FMS is the element of discussion that goes on in our threads and I think one thing we are perhaps missing out on are the spontaneous threads discussing elements of management.
Are people aware that they are allowed to start threads in this forum that are not just for their career? Would people like to see more of them?
I think the format of this forum was never going to be very different to the FMS forum. However, the emphasis here has always been away from the narrative side of things towards sharing our 'non-fictional' FM careers (non-fictional in the sense that we are sharing what is actually happening on our saves).
Personally, I do think it would be good to have more threads where everyone can share more discussion about their careers. Almost a bit more like GD but specifically with discussion about careers in mind. Perhaps most users don't really realise that they could start 'GD-like' threads here. To be honest, it didn't really occur to me to start that kind of thread. I think it would be good though if we could have more polls, more discussions on making career decisions, more discussions on how we play out our careers and so on and so forth.
Those are exactly the sorts of things I was thinking of, to make this more of a discussion forum as well as an updates forum.
Personally always thought it was for threads about individuals careers. Never knew/thought we could open general discussion threads here tbh
Most stuff that you would make a thread for in GD is discussed in here - certainly if I wanted to raise something, this thread is where I'd do it.
I would like that a lot at the moment I do not have a career thread that I want to post on here but I do like discussing my current career and discussing other peoples. We have quite a few knowledgeable posters in here that know a lot about different aspects of a career and FM in general. Would make perfect sense to be able to open discussion threads.
When I campaigned for this forum I did initially want it for people to log their careers as there wasn't anywhere really to do that before. FMS has strict rules and so does LLM, rules which a lot of people don't adhere to in their saves. Plus, the team threads in which people can post their career (for example; the Man Utd thread), individual careers tend to become 'lost' amongst everyone elses Man Utd career. I actually didn't think about dafuges suggestion of having spontaneous threads discussing elements of management but I think that is something that I would certainly like to see. The Careers Forum (FMCU) has it's own little community and I for one prefer discussing FM with the members who frequent in here rather than the, erm, shall we say stereotypical posters in GD . I think it would be nice to see discussion threads popping up .
