I'm pretty much totally with you there Acidburn.
I love the early ones the best though because it was just so basic and the comedy was really excellent. Chris Barrie and Craig Charles had this great chemistry back then and Norman Lovett was just awesome, plus Danny John-Jules was better in those early episodes as the Cat.
It's a genius comedy though. I remember watching them over and over when I was a kid. Now I have the boxsets and I love them. I'm probably due to start watching them from the beginning again some time soon. I love that show!
I find it hard to choose between season 1 and 2 compared to 3-6. 1 and 2 as you said has the great chemistry between Lister and Rimmer and the Cat is great but it lacks Kryten who adds to the group perfectly.
Yes, but no male Holly in 3-6.Although Hattie Hayridge was pretty awesome as well.
I don't know why but 1 & 2 will always be my favourites, although I love 1-6 full stop. As far as I am concerned, the series ended with series 6 though, as I cannot stand 7 and 8. Especially 8. Don't even get me started on 8.![]()
I keep meaning to re-read the books at some point, which I haven't read since I was a kid. I wonder if they will be as good as I remember?
I haven't read them but my mate said they were wicked, most of the comedy can translate into a book pretty easily I am guessing.
Red Dwarf should have gone the way of classics like Fawlty Towers and The Office and stopped after a couple of series.
Back to FM... I've noticed a couple of people on about having two or even more saves running concurrently. I don't have time to play one as much as I would like!
I agree with Nobby on the save front!
I was going to start my first FM11 save with Sporting Lisbon, with the title "It's time to break out the L word!.....Lisbons"
But, I've changed my mind on the team!
You're going to Leverstock Green instead?
Jeez I haven't posted my career for a while.
You can tell theres a new FM around the corner with the lack of action in this forum, As soon as 11 comes out just think how many people are going to put there careers on here. ooooh exciting times.
I need to update three seasons in my career, but I really cannot be arsed![]()
Come on Deisler, that's just not the spirit.![]()
I finally updated my career thread. It's been a month!![]()
I wish FM11 would hurry up I want to start a new career thread.
Was I one of them?
I've tried to have a few saves on the go at one time, what with my calcio one, my international one and my Saints one. Lots of great ideas for saves but not enough time to play them all was the result.
Ultimately, I found that it just hasn't worked. I tried playing a season here and a season there but one saves hooks you in and you end up spending all your time on that one. Then you forget where you were on the other one and it becomes a chore to get back into it.
I've reached the conclusion that it's definitely better to concentrate on one save at a time, which is why I'm focusing on my Saints save only right now.
Having said the above, I would like to go back to my calcio save at some point to find out what happens to Davide Vanghi & Umberto Eusepi.![]()
It's all fine and dandy if you have the time to devote to two saves...
Get a job you work shy bum.![]()
Why does the winking smiley looks like you're ****ing yourself laughing?
Not been in here in a while. Not had the internet for around 2 months and my laptop broke but have bought a nice shiny one and will get back in at some point when the new games comes out. Just started a save with Dortmund so will update in the Career Updates Thread.
People have probably noticed that I've added FM10 tags to all of the existing FM10 threads, in anticipation of the FM11 threads starting. If any of them have been labelled incorrectly, just let me know so I can change them.
Just a reminder, if you are starting a new thread for FM2011 there is no need to add a version tag with it. Any new FM2010 (or older) threads will need the tag added so people know it is an older version.
Looks a bit messy at the moment but it should sort itself out as the new threads are created![]()
You messy sod Dafuge.
So who here will be doing a career game at the start of Fm11 and do you plan on being one club forever (Dafuge's challenge) or play more of a journeyman game - and which countries do you plan to load?
I'm planning on starting a journeyman career as soon as I get the game and the first patch is released. The only thing I haven't decided is quite which leagues I'll be loading.
Has anyone had any experience running a long term game with a low performance rating? I have a feeling my FM2010 game was 5 stars for game speed so I'd be interested to hear just how slow things can get in the future.
I will be and I can never say I will be one club or journeyman. There have been times before when I have set out to do one of the two and ended up doing the other, so now I just see how the game goes.
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU T9600 @ 2.80GHz (2 CPUs), ~2.8GHz
Memory: 8192MB RAM
I've no idea what that means but the huge RAM seems to give me 5 stars for performance. I'm currently thinking about loading leagues that drop it down to 2 stars for speed, but will think about it if that means it will crawl in 40 seasons time.
No idea about the xml files, I've never used them.
I always stick to 3 stars as a minimum and thats only if I really have to as I'm quite conscious about game speed after a number of seasons.
I plan on England (to L2), Wales, Spain (top 2), Germany (top 2), Brazil (top 2) and Mexico (top 2) as things stand, not sure about going outside Europe.
daf, load everything if you want.
You can definitely load more than 100 leagues, since I could do to it with 4 GB ram and a 2.1 Ghz dual core processor. Of course, I never managed to play 40 years into a save...but 100+ will definitely be fine even though I went over the recommended player limit.
Are you planning to have a global save, or just a European leagues save? All European leagues out of the box without any xml files should get you a little over 100 leagues (give or take, since I always use xml files so I'm not exactly sure).
50,000 players should get you 40+ years in the save. Maybe you can add a little more smaller leagues (like Poland, Belgium for work permits in England, and maybe Austria too because of the amount of German/Austrians that I seem to get in games, and maybe China, and MLS too) without hampering the game speed in the future.
Since FM is still a 32 bit application, you won't use all 8 GB of ram (only 4 I believe), but you have a quick processor so you can load quite a few leagues.
And if any of you pre-ordered through Steam, I'm delighted to say you can pre-load now.![]()
Can you guys let me know if you see a working New Zealand league to download for FM11, I really want to get start on continental dominance again. Very interested to see if more people will take part in the challenge if it is started as early as possible. I would do it myself but last time I tried it did not work properly.
I am making the £7 train journey to buy FM11 on Friday after work, so the game is costing me a bit more than normal.
I can confirm after preloading on steam and having a look on the editor that xml files from FM10 were loadable in FM11. Although, they are from a year ago so they all probably need updating anyways...
I really hope someone re-creates those West Asian leagues so I can start my FM11 career game.
That's great news means I can just alter the teams and away I go on Friday.
Pre-ordered the game but now I have to go out of toen on Friday evening so there's a big chance I'll miss the release day delivery
I'm considering installing via steam this year after hearing about the achievements and trophy room. Anyone else doing this/did this last year?
I was thinking about using steam but I have heard a couple of people say it can take ages to load the save, not sure if that is if you just download it from steam. What is the trophy room, I am guessing it records your trophies through your career.
I saw a screenie with actual trophy graphics on display![]()
Nice, think I might activate via steam then or do you have to download via steam to get that?
You can install through steam whether you buy the game from them or not, even with the boxed version (apparently)
Just an FYI for folks in here, I'm taking my first crack at the editor.
I can't figure out how to do the leagues, so instead I'm using my media background to try to put together an XML of US/Canada media sources.
So far, I have the newspapers in Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Washington, and Toronto.
Still working, and it may come to nothing, but figured I'd let folks in here know (especially rancer, for his next crack at TFC.)
Sounds good, I plan a decent MLS career at some point on FM11 so hope you are successful in making it all adds to the realism of the game.
Just wondering what star rating people get when loading these huge journeyman career games.
when i loaded most of the leagues with 2 or more leagues (using max of 3 leagues in one country) on medium im getting 3 still

Could we start a new "FM11 Career Anecdotes & Updates Thread" and sticky it at the top? I like to hear about everyone's careers, even if it's a couple lines here and there. The Anecdotes thread seems to get lost down the list... and newcomes can't find it easily. I think if more people used it, there might be less very-very-short career threads that take up space. (Yes, I'm guilty of that, too.)
I'm not a fan of too many stickies either, but this forum is good about not flooding the top of the screen with them. In my opinion, a sticky for the Anecdotes/Updates thread would be warranted, to ensure it gets used by newcomes and regulars alike. But I defer to our good Mod...![]()
I now have:
1. All newspapers in MLS ciities and their beat writers (it looks like the National Post and Globe and Mail, and Chicago Tribune do not have dedicated writers for TFC and Chicago Fire respectively, at least not that I could extrapolate from stories on their websites)
2. Other non-newspaper sources: ESPN, Soccernet.com, FoxSoccer.com, Soccer America and Sports Illustrated. From them, I've added Alexi Lalas, Jen Chang, Steve Davis, Allen Hopkins, Jamie Trecker, Paul Gardner, Ridge Mahoney, and Grant Wahl.
3. Plan to add the CBC and TSN as Canadian media sources. If rancer or other Canadians could let me know some of the personalities, I'll add in specific journalists for those media outlets as well.
4. I will test out of the above edits in a game, and if it works then I'll probably end up adding some of the fanzines like Buzz Carrick and 3rdDegree.Net.
5. If you have other media sources or personalities that I'm forgetting about (just remembered Glenn Davis myself), let me know.
Canadian TV personalities:
- TSN: They don't have a Soccer analyst
- Rogers Sportsnet: Gerry Dobson, Craig Forrest
- The Score - James Sharman, Kristian Jack, Sid Seixeiro (tbf, he's a news anchor but he co-hosts 'The Footy Show' with Sharman and Jack, both who are also bloggers on The Score), Joe Ross (blogger), Thomas Dobby (blogger), Brendan Dunlop (blogger)
- CBC Sports - Jason de Vos, Nigel Reed, John Molinaro
I hope King Jeff knows some more, these are from the top of my head and a quick wiki check.

Hmmm. May need to do some extra work on the media edit.
Nick Dasovic just got the TFC job, and at the press conference was fielding questions from "A Journalist" with Sports Illustrated, Soccer America, and the Washington Post, but none of the Canadian outlets.
IIRC, SI lists TFC as an "American" club, but I set the Toronto newspapers to cover TFC. :/
Wonder if I have to set them to cover United States in addition to Canada.

Why is TFC considered American in the game again?
BTW, I haven't started a career game, is it possible to add in the media outlets and whatever after I start a game and add it in later? I'm mainly waiting for correct media outlets and real agents file and then I can start.
Think it has something to do with MLS being the US top division. Cardiff and Swansea are listed as English clubs.
Dunno. This is my first crack at editing.BTW, I haven't started a career game, is it possible to add in the media outlets and whatever after I start a game and add it in later? I'm mainly waiting for correct media outlets and real agents file and then I can start.
The good news is, the Toronto Star and Toronto Sun were represented in the pre- and post-match interviews. I'm still getting "A Journalist" listed though.
Also getting the likes of the New York Times showing up at a Columbus-Toronto press conference. I have a pretty good guess as to why that's happening. (I've had all the US media outlets set to cover MLS, the US Open Cup, and CCL competitions. So I think that's why I'm getting that sort of thing)
Game just flies by when you're unemployed. Barely ever stops to give you a chance to look at job vacancies.
Bought my game from play.com as I prefer having the game physically (am stuck in my ways) and it was posted Tuesday so am awaiting a postman who will hopefully have the game.![]()
If you start unemployed and are not bothered where your first job is then set it to apply for any job and just holiday mode it with it set to stop when someone offers you a contract. It's how I do it as a 6-month wait for a first job does get boring.
just played my champs league qaulifier with TNS and both games ended with a total of 5 red cards...4 where mine...crazy shizzle
OK, game arrived, am running
England (top 4)
Germany (top 2)
Holland (top 2)
Italy (top 2)
Scotland (top 4)
Spain (top 2)
Wales (prem)
34000 players, estimated game speed of 4 stars
I really hope these Egyptian and New Zealand leagues I used for FM10 work properly on FM11 would hate to start my continental dominance and get stuck after 15 years.
I realized that a lot of xml files from FM10 aren't working for FM11. I'm editing or recreating leagues so bear with me mate. I haven't even played the game because of the editing I have to do..
Although Tunisia still doesn't work because no teams in the Amateur IV division so I'm working on that.
Tried New Zealand early hours of this morning and it worked well, I wanted a UAE league but that file doesn't work.
Really? I had messem's NZ file and it crashed on me so I had to edit that. I'm also in the process of editing some Asian league xml files from last year because I'm not sure if they're working.
German file also crashed on me so I redid Regionalliga, and might do the 5th tier if I had some info.
If anyone has a working Tunisia file I would appreciate it thanks.
Not sure who did the New Zealand one I had I just found something on the PC called New Zealand.xml tried it and it worked, holidayed 2 seasons and it was fine.
I tried to load the UAE one I have and got the following message.
Could not process rule group setting in (file location) Emirates President Cup too many teams(160 requested from Emirati First Division A(8 team)
I don't have a clue about editing.
That means there's 8 teams assigned to the Emirati First Division A, and there's 160 teams in total in that Division...you need to somehow find another 152 teams on the internet to match the 160 stated in the db error.
Does anyone (like Jason) know if I add teams in the MLS Academy Division they will work properly with their parent clubs in MLS?
downloading other leagues and things will stop me from doing these type of challenges cos i aint a clue how to dl and where they go and stuff.
If that league is not the top league could I simply delete it?
Got my copy from Steam this morning, very nice. Think I will lay my FM10 Leyton Orient game to rest. Going to have a go an MLS game until Christmas, when hopefully all the XML files and the like will be out. Lets see if this dynamic rep thing works in north america!
Rancer do you have a UAE xml anywhere mine just will not work the cup competition is a bit confusing to edit properly.
Do you have Frank Ng's UAE league from FM10? I haven't tested that one yet since I'm still trying to change the Canadian and the American lower leagues.
The only workaround I can think of atm is to delete the cup.
Is there any bloody way to stop the editor from considering the USSF-D2 the 3rd division? Why is the PDL hardcoded in the game in the first place... (Jason please help)
I managed to get it working had to switch how many teams from each division were selected to enter the cup. I also had to add teams from the third tier into the second tier in order for it to work. Hopefully it will load now.
Has everyone planning a career game seen this thread?
I'm holding off starting until we know if it will be save game compatible. Gutted really.
Well that sucks bad, had Spain down as one of my journeyman countries, although have also had issues with no one wanting to employee and Sunday league rep unemployed person :S
Yeah I just saw it...I loaded up a 102 league career game and probably going to play it a little. I don't want to edit FM10 xml files anymore and just want to start playing!
I am trying to do my challenge of winning every champions league trophy I always load Spain on nearly every save I do, I will have to leave it now.
Simple question everyone, V.Varen Nagasaki (again) or Chongqing (Chinese club)? I'm undecided right now.![]()
Go for the Chinese one.
Chongqing rancer. V.Varen Nagasaki was done last year![]()
Have been holidaying to see who I am likely to get if I start unemployed and always get Aberystwyth which I had in FM10Might just start with Bala town.
Okay AcidBurn and Raware, I'll post up my career when I'm done a year in game.![]()
I'm getting a bit fed up with this Spanish issue and I'm starting to consider just starting a game anyway. I may need to start again but at least I'll get a while to enjoy the game before finding out whether I'll need to start again.
Just messing around with Italy and England loaded instead of England Spain, started unemployed and ended up at Auckland City where I started on FM10 not sure if I go with them or holiday again and see what happens.
nice to see that bit of welsh in you mate....
