60 to One

And now the sign-up begins! One person will be the CSE Endurance King!

The Concept
60 promising football managers have been born into Europe’s, arguably the world’s, top divisions: the English Premier League, the Italian Serie A and the Spanish La Liga. Their mission: to survive the longest without getting fired, resigning or moving clubs. He or she that does that becomed the CSE Endurance King or Queen.

However, there isn’t just one opportunity to win the title. There aren’t two. There are three. Myself, Ridleys and weeeman27bob are each running three versions of the sign-up: an identical database with no changes in the manager qualities but in each one, different things will happen and as a result, anyone can win. Who will fare best, those at small clubs, those at big clubs, or those willing to settle for a 10th-placed finish?

There’s only one way to find out…onwards we stroll!

The Important Stuff
Here’s a few things about your managers that you might need to know.

Every manager has started off at the club given to them by the Live Draw (see the sign-up thread). They also have this club as their favoured club to a level of 80%, and are on a £10,000 Full Time Contract with no set expiration date.

They have started with a Current Ability of 130 and a Potential Ability of 160, and Home, Current and World Reputations are initially set at 7000. They have been allocated 20 for some attributes and 1 for others dependant on their favoured ice cream from a selection of five, which they stated as they signed up. They chose their own nationality and also date of birth, although the game is slightly erratic in allocating the latter, although all managers are between 40 and 45 at the start of the game.

The Lives
This is the heart of the sign-up. Each manager is given three lives. Once a manager moves clubs, resigns or is sacked in one save, run by either me, Ridleys or weeeman27bob, they lose that corresponding life. They do not lose the life if they co-manage a nation and a club, although they do if at any point they decide to leave the club and purely manage the nation.

Once a manager loses all three lives, they are out. The last manager with a life left at the end of the sign-up is the winner. However, if a user has not made a satisfactory contribution to the thread, they shall not win and the title will be passed down to the second person, third person or even further until someone who has been regularly posting wins.

Managers with the same number of lives are ranked by their job security. For two or more lives, the job security for all lives is summed and a score given, the higher the better. This is as follows:

1 Precarious
2 Very Insecure
3 Insecure
4 Stable
5 Secure
6 Very Secure
7 Untouchable

Following this post I will post a current lives table. Bear in mind that this lives table will not be updated as the sign-up progresses, but new lives tables will be posted after every update.

The Updates
Updates come in threes: one from myself, one from weeeman27bob and one from Ridleys. These will be posted every weekend and reflect a month’s game time, although if for whatever reason we cannot post an update the schedule will have to change. After all three updates, a lives table will be posted.

The user posting the update will select their “Manager of the Update”. This doesn’t score points, but is good to keep track of how you are doing and is a nice sideshow. The reports will focus on managers who got fired during the month of update, and is guaranteed to cover every one of them, but will not necessarily cover every one of the 60 managers. However, with each update comes a table giving your progress in that one save, so you will know how you are doing even if you are not mentioned.

Managers mentioned in the report will be done so using their manager names. Hence it is important for me to post the above table so you can refer if you need to.

Writer’s Notes
Please contribute to the thread and enjoy yourselves. Remember that us three runners have other things to do and cannot always be writing and posting updates. We’ll try and notify everyone in advance if we cannot make an update.

Further Writer's Notes (31/05)
We've restarted the thread due to the disappearance of mikeytwigge, and we've brought in a new third co-runner, who is to be weeeman27bob. Obviously, weeeman has to catch up with his updates and we will try and get you a mid-week update. That means that, alongside him posting his update for the first month, you will see our updates again. This is to preserve continuity and to keep everything in a nice order for archiving/future viewing. You don't have to reread our updates if you don't want to, although for some people, you might savour the time when your job position was as good as stable!

As per the further writer's notes at the end of the OP, Ridleys and I won't be doing our updates again, simply reposting them for continuity. Your only chance of an improvement is in weeeman's save replacing mikeytwigge's.

Update 1 – weeeman27bob

All systems are go in Europe’s three major leagues. Only twenty-four days may have passed, but that hasn’t stopped the transfer action so far. In Spain, Lucas Volman’s Real Madrid have been the biggest spenders so far, forking out for right winger Mauro Camoranesi. Madrid’s main rivals, Haowan Madridstas’s Barcelona, have to be content with a 3-1 victory over Bulgarian team Lokomotiv. With only a few friendlies being played by the Spanish teams, lots of attention was drawn to Lawrence Lazewski’s Valencia’s defeat by two goals to one against Liverpool, managed by Jeremy English. Elsewhere in Spain Atlético Madrid put five goals past Amoros in their only friendly. David Machine’s similar sounding Athletic also won by the same convincing margin.

Wobill Luman’s Betis and Phill Ewles’s Valladolid are the only two teams to have bought two players so far in Spain, splashing out £3.7m and £430k respectively. Andy Morton may have signed two players, but one was an out of contract player. His team still contrived to lose 1-2 to Tyler Burrows’s Udinese. Neji Hyuuga’s Deportivo struggled to get past a weak Odense Boldklub in their UEFA Cup qualification campaign winning by four goals to three. Jack Browne’s Sevilla have had a disappointing start to the season, winning only one of their two friendlies against weaker opposition. Joe Seddon’s ,Getafe , however, ran out convincing winners against Rio Ave. Sirus Lannock’s Malaga have also done well winning their only friendly so far. Jellybean Man should give himself a complimentary jellybean after Numancia won both of their friendlies by a combined score of 7-1. Osasuna, managed by Saul Goode are also on the winning track having beaten Chantrea by a four goal margin. Racing have had mixed results so far, but Maz Armley should be pleased after defeating Leo Dodge’s Spurs by two goals to nil.

Arsenal are top of the table in the EPL, as they usually are when no games have been played, but have still managed to knock in seventeen unopposed goals in friendlies. New boys Hull City have had a mixed pre-season so far losing two but winning three. Elsewhere in the north, Shazad Ali’s Geordies have won all three of their friendlies so far. Their rivals, Scott Tysoe’s Sunderland have lost two of their friendlies but managed to pull out a shock victory against Ben Cee’s Inter by two goals to one.

Liam Ferguson’s Man City, have been the biggest spenders in England so far, splashing out £12 million for João Moutinho. Their new signing has helped them to chalk up an impressive twenty goals in pre-season so far. The other notorious big spenders, Chelsea, have actually gained money after selling Michael Ballack, but have still managed to win all of their friendlies. Last season’s winners, Maurice Jobson’s Man United, do not have a 100% pre-season record after a disappointing draw, but still look like challengers for the title. The final member of the big four, Jeremy English’s Liverpool, have chalked up three straight wins.

By contrast, Wigan have had a poor start to the season, winning only two of their six games, but scoring twelve goals in the process. Zach Machios’s Portsmouth have not only won all of their games, but have also secured the services of the young attacking midfielder, Diego Buonanotte. Also in the south, Tim Aubel’s Fulham have picked up one of each from their three pres-season games so far, wining one, drawing one and losing one. Also, in London, Whoopy Dee’s West Ham have won all of their friendlies, scoring fifteen goals in the process. Moving across to the Midlands, newly promoted West Brom have had a good start to the new campaign, and are so far unbeaten in pre-season. Fellow Midlanders Stoke have not done so well contriving to lose two of their five friendlies. Mark Cator’s Aston Villa, though, have done the best of the Midland teams, comfortably progressing through their UEFA cup tie

Moving across to Italy, Ben Taylor’s Fiorentina have purchased half of Alessandro Rosina. Big boys AC Milan, managed by Will de Mote, have been impressive in pre-season so far, winning both games 4-1 with the second game against Lisa Jeffries’s Juventus. Their main rivals, Inter, have not been anywhere near as impressive in losing to Sunderland. Super Lampard’s Lecce have had an average start so far, winning one and losing one but still scoring eight goals in the process. Neppo Monster’s Cagliari, by contrast, only scored one goal in their only fixture to date.

Reggina, managed by James Salter, have done well so far beating Belgian team Genk by three goals to none. Theo Stigarakis’s Catania matched Reggina in putting three goals past Genk. bermybhoy’s Atlanta have had an equally impressive game, beating Haarlem by four goals. Southern giants Roma have also scored four in their only fixture so far, which must please Clark Aitken. Jonte Rhodes’s Lazio have been in good touch, scoring five unanswered goals in just two games.

dafuge has had a mixed bag of results in his first two games as manager as Torino, having won one and lost one. Tyler Burrows’s Udinese have fared better, winning both of their games so far. Mathias Brunckhorst’s Chievo have been in demolition mode knocking in eight goals in two games. Da Hoover Man’s Sampdoria have not been quite as impressive but still have a 100% record. Mikael Schøler has done well so far, despite a 1-3 loss to Porto. Cardio Vascular has taken Genoa to an unbeaten start so far with a win and a draw for the Scottish manager. Finally in Italy, James Ridley’s Siena have the same record winning and drawing one game apiece.

Manager of the Update

There are a fair few candidates but;

Whoopy Dee, West Ham

…claims this noble award, due to his team having scored an impressive amount of goals, fifteen, against established opposition. There were a fair few being considered, and while Jellybean Man’s Numancia have been impressive so far, they haven’t played against great opposition, and while AC Milan have beaten some good teams, the quality of players available to Will de Mote means he isn’t quite up there. Both Tom Smith’s Arsenal and Liam Ferguson’s Manchester City have knocked in a considerable number of goals, but my decision goes to Dee because of the lower quality of players available to him.

Note: this update has been previously posted, so you will have already read it. We just want to keep the thread looking nice as weeeman posts his updates.

Update 1 - Ridleys
Years: 0, Months: 1, Days: 24

The exciting pre-season has begun and all new managers are out looking for new players to build up their squads. Firstly I think I should mention that all managers have survived through their first month of management so congratulations. Anyway on to the important stuff and who better to start with than ManchesterCity, with their billionaire chairman. The ManchesterCity boss Liam Ferguson has been most active in July – spending £74m on 6 new players, of which 2 of them are arguably a huge gamble. The £74m spent so far by ManchesterCity so far is more than the rest of the World’s spending put together! Ferguson also managed City to an 8-0 aggregate win over Tobyl Kostanay in the UEFA Cup 1st Qualifying Round. Another of the managers to open their chequebook was Middlesbrough manager Ricky Nakano who brought in 2 additions to the club - a defender and an attacking midfielder - for a combined fee of £2.7m. Boro and ManchesterCity were 2 of only 9 teams that spent money in the month of July.

Newly promoted Hull City and their new manager Martin Bojangles were looking to bring in some more defensive options to the team as they brought in a defensive midfielder and a central defender for a mere £150k. These new defensive options seem to be working as well as they have looked very solid in their 4 friendlies where they have scored 15 goals and conceded just 2. Arnold J. Rimmer was also on the look out for a defensive midfielder for his team Bolton Wanderers. He decided to sign Gerardo Torrado from Mexican club Cruz Azul for £2.3m. The Bolton boss also brought in a Japanese attacking midfielder to provide more options when going forward. Wigan’s female manager Brettney Joven had raked in £16.5m from selling 2 of her players to ManCity over the month. This provided them with enough funds to buy 2 players – 1 being a defender and the other a striker. The Latics Lady decided to not spend big money though and only spent £1.2m on the pair.

Andre da Conceiçao was the only manager from a Big 4 side to spend any money during the month of July. da Conceiçao signed an absolutely pointless 31 year old keeper who will never be more than backup at Chelsea for £1.6m. West Ham did not follow in da Conceiçao’s footsteps however and did not want to sign pointless players. Their manager Whoopy Dee signed a left winger from Celtic for a fee of £3.2m. It ended up however that Dee’s signing made a bad start to his career at the club. The winger played in 2 friendlies and got an average rating of 5.45. Funnily, he hasn’t played since. Tim Aubel’s Fulham have looked very average in pre-season. They brought in Kenny Miller on a season long loan for a fee of £300k, but still seem short of goals scoring only 3 goals in their 5 friendlies in July. Zach Machios,the manager of Portsmouth, was the final man to get involved in the Transfer Window as they were another team to sign an attacking midfielder from a Scotland, for £160k. The player is yet to make an appearance for the club.

So what are the other 3 teams in the Big Four up to? Well, Tom Smith has got off to a pleasing start at Arsenal as his tactical knowledge is going down well and the team are playing well and are trying to impress their new manager before the season starts properly. Maurice Jobson was given the tough job of managing current Premier Division holders Manchester United. Things got off to a good start in pre-season with two 6-0 wins but since then they have suffered an embarrassingly poor defeat in the hands of Sheffield United. This is only pre-season, but Mr Jobson will be hoping that that result isn’t a sign of things to come. Liverpool’s new manager Jeremy English wanted to bring some flowing and attacking football to Anfield and that is exactly what he has achieved, scoring 13 goals in their first 4 friendlies of the pre-season. Scott Tysoe was not active this month in the transfer window, however there are rumours that he has been looking at a couple of players. Tysoe has made his first error in management however as he has somehow managed to hire a 2nd Assistant Manager. Perhaps he just needs some extra help. Along the road at Newcastle Shazad Ali is also rumoured to be looking at a player to boost their attacking options. They are thought to be looking at Fabrizio Miccoli on loan for the rest of the season.

Mark Cator was the 2nd of 2 Premiership managers to take part in a European competition during July. He managed his side, Aston Villa, to a 3-1 aggregate win against Turkish side Grasshopper. They have also managed a good result over Porto in a friendly as they ran out easy winners against the once Champions League winners. Everton looked like they would be the side that would be challenging Aston Villa to 5th place this season along with Tottenham and both managers Bryan McGuinness and Leo Dodge have both been extremely busy doing nothing over the past month. With their sides playing in just 2 friendlies each it has been a very inactive month for both managers. Will the laid back approach work though? Even though West Brom are doomed to relegation in real life, they are not quite as bad in this game, well we can’t be sure of that now that Brucie Bonus has taken charge. Bonus will be looking to take more of a laid back approach and even though West Brom usually like to get forward (well maybe once or twice), Brucie’s new style seems to be going down a treat as they are yet to lose a friendly! Watch out though, they are playing Hereford next and that will be a certain defeat.

Stoke’s gaffer Fréderico Canvey seemed to forget he was managing Stoke until 22 days in to the month as he was spotted holidaying with recently retired Sir Alex Ferguson (he hasn’t actually retired, don’t worry!) in Ibiza. Fréddy got to work quickly though as he somehow got his players to play 5 games in the space of just 8 days! Robert Boyle is the 20th and final manager from the English Premiership. He is on the look out for a new striker and may have found it with Claudio Pizarro currently considering a contract for a £4.2m move to the Lancashire side. Blackburn have recorded 3 comfortable wins so far from their 3 friendlies.

La Liga has also started with a bang and players are being released here there and everywhere at the moment! At. Madrid manager Cool Manager and Athletic manager David Machine have been busy reducing their wage bills and between them they have released a total of 37 players (15 for At. Madrid and 22 for Athletic)! All these players seem to be from either the “B” of “C” teams though, so neither manager will have a shortage of players come the first league game. Wobill Luman at Betis was the first of only 2 managers to purchase a player this month as he decided to £1.1m to bring experienced Argentine midfielder Kily Gonzalez back to Spain for the 2nd time in his career. Phill Ewles at Valladolid was the only other manager to spend any money on a player as he brought in Miguel Falcon, an attacking midfielder from Cartagena for £300k. Falcon now joins to the list of 13 attacking midfielders at the club! Sporting manager Andy Morton was the only other manager active in the transfer window so far, bringing in former Spain international Ivan Helguera to strengthen the defence. Their defence is certainly playing well with him in as well as they have won both of the friendlies the new signing has been involved in, without conceding a goal.

With no other teams purchasing any other players so far, a lot of the teams are spending time playing friendlies and getting ready for the new season. Neilio and Almería have been the most active so far, playing 3 friendlies and winning all 3 without conceding a goal. Saul Goode, manager of Osasuna has also managed in 3 pre-season friendlies so far and his side have also won all 3 without conceding a goal. They, like Almeria, have only faced lower league opposition however and have some tougher friendlies to come. Mallorca have not been in brilliant form so far and their manager Tom Hamilton may find himself under pressure if this recent form continues. Mallorca have played 3 friendlies, winning 1, drawing 1 and losing 1.

Lars Tommersen has not been wasting time playing against lower opposition as his Villarreal team have faced Argentine Giants River Plate as well as two Dutch division 1 sides. They won all 3 games comfortably. Málaga and Sirus Lannock have not been up to much at the moment, playing just 1 friendly – winning it 3-0. They are also rumoured to be interested in signing an attacking midfielder (does every team need an attacking midfielder or something?) for a fee in the region of £1.4m. Neji Hyuuga is the only manager to have taken part in European football so far in Spain as Deportivo faced Rosenborg in the Intertoto Cup 3rd Qualifying round. Unfortunately for Deportivo though, they were knocked out on away goals. Neji hasn’t appeared in public since apparently after such an embarrassing early exit.

Now then onto the 2 Spanish Giants: Real Madrid and Barcelona, managed by Lucas Volman and Haowan Madridstas respectively. Mr Volman had arguably the harder job as his Madrid side were current La Liga champions; however neither he nor Madridstas decided to spend any money during the month of July, which came as a surprise to a lot of people. Real Madrid are on the verge of signing Mauro Camoranesi from Juventus however, but will this one signing be enough for them to live up to expectations and retain the title? Tipped to come in 3rd position is Sevilla, and Jack Browne will be looking to get them off to a good start in the league. They play Chelsea in a friendly on the 9th August and this could give an indication of how good the team are.

Sevilla are predicted to come in 3rd place; however I feel it will be a 3-way competition. Sevilla, Villarreal, At. Madrid and Valencia all look like they could get 3rd place in the league. Lawrence Lazewski will also be looking to get of to an explosive start, and with plenty of pre-season friendlies as well as the Spanish Super Cup to play, the side should be more than ready for the beginning of the season. Cristobal Blanco, the only Peruvian manager and manager of Recreativo, will be looking to guide his side away from relegation this season and hope for a mid-table position at the best. They have looked fairly impressive so far, recording 2 wins in their 2 friendlies this month. Cristobal’s attacking style seems to have gone down well so far. Maz Armley is all set to manage Racing in their first ever season in a European Competition. They have not been entered into the UEFA Cup yet but will be at a later stage. They finished 6th last season and I’m not sure that they will be able to improve this season.

Numancia are going to struggle this season, but Jellybean Man will be hoping that his attacking football will guide his team away from relegation. I don’t expect Jellybean Man will last long at the club if he can’t save the club from relegation, but you never know. Getafe are no more than a mid-table team but if they aren’t careful they could get dragged in to the relegation zone. Manager Joe Seddon will be hoping that he can keep his side in a safe mid-table position. Joe Gleeson is the final manager in Spain. He is managing Espanyol, huge rivals of Barcelona, and his side may have an outside chance of getting into Europe this season. This will largely depend on how well they play against the other teams gunning for a European spot.

Serie A is the home to the Defensive game, although things may be set to change as there is now a wave of attacking managers who are looking to change the style of Italian football completely. Serie A is also home to the Co-ownership transfer rule, which is used very regularly. I find it all rather confusing to be honest (however after reading this short article I feel I have a better understanding of how it works). Over 50% of the transfers so far have been co-ownerships. Da Hoover Man, manager of Sampdoria seems to be using this system to the best of his ability as he has spent £4.1m to co-own 3 players (Takayuki Morimoto, Nicola Pozzi and Jorge Martinez). bermybhoy at Atlanta is also using the system to his advantage as he has also signed (well, co-owned) 3 players for a combined fee of £2.6m.

Bologna’s boss Mikael Schøler is one of only 4 managers to purchase a player permanently (i.e not co-owning them) as he brought in Giulio Migliaccio from fellow Serie A side Palermo, managed by Mikey Twigge, for a fee of £2.2m. Another manager to spend some of their transfer budget in July was James Salter as he spent £1.4m on Martin Jorgensen from Fiorentina to give his side, Reggina, more options up front. Salter is also looking out for some fresh young talent as they have co-owned 17 year old Tsvetomir Todorov from Ascoli for £300k. As well as playing in Europe, Napoli and their manager, Lord Weeman, has spent the highest amount of money on a permanent single player during the first month. They spent £2.4m to bring 34-year-old ex-Argentine international Martin Palermo from Boca Juniors. In the Intertoto Cup Napoli recorded a comfortable 6-2 aggregate win over Saturn in the 3rd Qualifying Round. Ben Taylor at Fiorentina is another manager to have spent quite a bit of money during the first month as he spent £2.8m to co-own Torino’s highly rated right winger Alessandro Rosina. Mr Taylor also brought in 24-year-old left winger Emil Hallfredsson for £1.3m from Reggina. The fourth manager to sign a permanent player was Theo Stigarakis as he signed Davide Moro, an Italian central midfielder to strengthen Catania’s midfield. He was signed for £80k from Empoli.

Much like the Big Four in England, there are also 4 teams in Italy which all look capable of winning the title. Inter are looking like favourites at the moment as they have won all of their friendlies. Ben Cee is the manager at Inter and is on the lookout for some new talent, and has made offers for both Coutinho and Kuzmanovic. Another of the team tipped as a title challenger is Roma and their manager Clark Aitken will want to impress the fans and stay in the job as long as possible. They have also recorded a few easy victories in their few friendlies and the manager doesn’t seem to want to bring in any new faces to the team for the time being.

The only other female manager in the game is Lisa Jeffries and she is the manager of another title challenger, Juventus. Having already got offers for one of their best players, Mauro Camoranesi, Lisa is already looking for a player to replace him. Miguel Veloso and Zdravko Kuzmanovic have both been rumoured to be joining the club, even though no offers have been made at the moment. A.C. Milan are the final team who are likely to be battling for the title, and are predicted to finish in 4th place, but I’m sure their manager Will de Mote will be expecting to finish higher than that. Weirdly A.C. Milan (as well as many of the other teams in Serie A) have a lot of other teams from the same division listed as rivals, so the Milan fans are up for an exciting season!

With a chairman who is willing to listen to offers, Neppo Monster at Cagliari may find himself jobless before long if a takeover bid is completed and the new Chairman wants a new manager. All Monster can do is wait, or maybe do so well that the chairman wouldn’t dream of sacking him. Chievo are one of the favourites to get relegated from Serie A this season, but I’m sure Mathias Brunckhorst will try his best to guide his new team away from relegation and hopefully to a safe mid-table position for the season. The team has not done much to prepare for the season yet however, playing just one friendly so far. Lecce, like Chievio, are tipped as one of the favourites to go down, so it will be a tough task for their manager Super Lampard to save them from relegation. Lampard has set his sights on Ali Karimi, an Iran international, and should seal the signing within the next couple of days for £2.2m.

Genoa’s manager Cardio Vascular is also after Claudio Pizarro, just like Robert Boyle at Blackburn. Blackburn were favourites to sign the striker, but Genoa have also offered him a contract. They are potentially a top half team, but will have to work extremely hard to achieve a top half position this season. Lazio, remember them? Lazio used to be one of the top teams in the Serie A but have got progressively worse through the last few seasons and have now turned in to a mid-table team. Manager Jonte Rhodes has spent £2.7m to co-own 3 players so far, and in the long run the South African manager will be hoping to get Lazio back up to the top of Serie A.

Arguably the best team in the world these days is Siena, and their manager James Ridley is also one of the greatest managers to ever walk on the planet. Nah, I’m joking. Siena are no more than a mid-table side and that is all they can really expect this season. They just need to hope they don’t get dragged in to a relegation battle if they hit a run of bad form. Torino are set to finish around about the same place as Siena this season and their manager dafuge will be trying his best to accomplish this. Their pre-season form so far has been terrible though as they have lost both of their friendly matches so far. dafuge will be hoping that they don’t take this form in to their league campaign. Finally we move on to Udinese who will definitely be looking for a place in a European Competition next season. It is not going to be easy though as there are other teams like Palermo who also want to finish in a European spot this season. Tyler Burrows will do his best though and Udinese should be able to finish in the top 7 without too much trouble if everything goes to plan.

Manager of the Update
Finally I have got to choose my manager of the update. It is a tough one this month as nothing much has happened so I’m going to award it to Manchester City manager Liam Ferguson purely because he managed to spend more than all the other teams combined, as well as progressing through to the next round of the UEFA Cup with ease. Update 1 – canvey!!
Years: 0, Months: 1, Days: 24

The pre-season kicked into life in all three of Europe’s best leagues, but it was England in particular that played quite a number of friendlies, with Liam Ferguson’s Manchester City netting the most pre-season goals, an unanswered 18, included in that an 8-0 aggregate win over FK Vetra Vilnius in the UEFA Cup 1st Qualifying Round. Aside from the 5-0 win at the Emirates, a 4-0 win over RKC WAALWIJK during a tour of the Netherlands was a game full of goals. However, the results were to be expected from the Englishman, after he splashed the cash on João Moutinho and Vagner Love for a combined £29M, the highest spend of any manager in the competition.

Zach Machios’s Portsmouth made an attempt to come close, however, although their sum of £4.7M on River Plate’s Diego Buonanotte was counter-balanced with the sale of Richard Hughes to Ricky Nakano’s Middlesbrough for £1.6M. The result weren’t as free-flowing for Portsmouth, who didn’t have any competitive games and had an unremarkable pre-season. A 3-0 win over Havant and Waterlooville was a highlight, while a 0-2 loss to Benfica was not.

It is difficult at this stage for any chairman to be able to judge their manager’s performance, although the job is made easier for those who have played competitive football. While every manager’s job is still Stable, the Chairman of Lord Weeman’s Napoli should be happy with a 8-1 aggregate win over Tavria Simferopol of Ukraine, the highlight being the 5-1 win away at Lokomotyv. This without any spend on the books must be the icing on the cake for the ‘Young and Talented Manager’.

Neji Hyuuga’s Deportivo were also in competitive action, and a 6-0 friendly result followed a 3-0 secure aggregate win over Elfsborg in the Intertoto Cup. He was one of 40 managers not to have spent a penny, another being Leo Dodge at Tottenham. Loaning out Ricardo Rocha, however, brought him a £220k fee to swell the coffers from Martin Bojangles’s Hull. Dodge’s pre-season highlight was a 4-1 win over Leyton Orient while Bojangles enjoyed the 6-0 demolition of Winterton as well as two signings to accompany Rocha, with his total spend £450k. Joe Gleeson’s Espanyol also spent a little, Xabier Otermín costing £10k.

Fiorentina, while not playing any matches, did their best to spend money, with Ben Taylor shelling out on two co-ownership deals costing combined £4.1M. This put £1.3M and £2.8M in the pockets of James Salter and dafuge respectively, managers of Reggina and Torino. Meanwhile, Taylor made some income of £375k, including the £140k loan fee from Phill Ewles as Martin Jørgensen joined Valladolid for the season. He would have played in Ewles’s 3-0 win over Real Oviedo in a pre-season friendly.

Everyone always wants to know how the Big Four got on, and Chelsea, managed by Andre da Conceiçao, made the only transfer action among them, making £2.6M from the signing of Federico Vilar deducted from the sale of Michael Ballack, the former from Atlante, and the latter to FC Bayern. Liverpool, meanwhile, suffered a minor upset handed to them by Mikey Twigge’s Palermo. That 1-2 was the only loss of their pre-season, however, and a 5-0 win over Crewe with a 3-0 over Zaragoza were highlights for Jeremy English’s first 24 days in charge.

Mark Cator’s Aston Villa were the final team to be involved in European competiton, and a 1-2 defeat at Villa Park was no problem as they stole to a 4-3 aggregate win over SK Sturm Graz of Austria. A 3-0 win over Wycombe and a respectable 0-0 draw with Dutchmen PSV were other highlights from the pre-season, while the competition’s Dutch manager, Will de Mote, did absolutely nothing at A.C. Milan during his first 24 days. It wasn’t because Ben Cee’s Inter were using the ground, as they had travelled first to Germany where they lost 1-2 to Schalke, and then to England where Arnold J. Rimmer’s Bolton were on the unfortunate end of a 2-0 win for Cee’s boys. A 4-1 victory was their only pre-season win from four while their chocolate ice cream-loving manager spent £3.9M on two players.

Their loss (monetary) was the biggest in England other than Man City’s, but Tim Aubel at Fulham gave it a good go strengthening his squad with 2 players, one on loan, for £3.1M, and a 1-3 loss to Sporting CP was a blip on an otherwise unbeaten, but now finished, pre-season. Udinese also made a substantial loss, Tyler Burrow’s spending £2.8M on two co-ownership deals, while losing 1-2 to Gimnàstic in their first friendly. Another Italian side, Bologna, managed by Mikael Schøler, made a £2.65M loss with one player out and two in, including Daniel Gastaldello now being co-owned with Da Hoover Man’s Sampdoria. Sampdoria played 2 pre-season games, including a 4-0 win over Germany’s St. Pauli.

At Numancia, Jellybean Man scored 10 pre-season goals, including a 5-0 win C.D. Mirandés. Sirus Lannock at Málaga went better, however, and his 12 unanswered pre-season goals included the 7-0 thrashing of União Desportiva de Leiria. bermybhoy's Atlanta also scored 12 goals, but conceded 2, one of those being in their 8-1 destruction of Crotone. An £850k incoming co-ownership deal was another attribute in the Scotsman’s pre-season. Scott Tysoe’s Sunderland scored 14 in their pre-season, including a 5-0 win over Macclesfield but a 0-3 loss to Coventry. Tysoe also came close to clinching a deal with Wigan’s Mario Melchiot, after Brettney Joven accepted the £2.7M offer, but the contract was rejected.

Staying in England, Maurice Jobson’s Manchester United scored 11 pre-season goals in the form of two 4-0 wins and a 3-0 win. The Rwandan didn’t spend or take any money, in contrast to James Ridley at Siena, who made and spent £1.4M while also recording a 3-0 win over Tubize as one of two pre-season results. James Salter, already having received money from Fiorentina, made a further £2.6M to bring his income to £3.9M, £1.2M of which he spent on a Player Exchange from Ascoli. A 4-0 and a 2-1 pre-season win were other highlights, the former against Portugalete and the latter against Pontevedra. Mathias Brunckhorst spent £230k at Chievo, but also won 4-0 against Sambenedettese. Joe Seddon’s Getafe won 5-0 in one pre-season friendly against Granada 74, but Athletic went 2 better with a 7-0 victory over Zalla, this coupled with a 6-0 victory over Gernika, both masterminded by Australian David Machine.

Super Lampard’s Lecce made a significant loss, spending £2.2M on Ali Karimi as part of two transfers, and bringing in £180k resulting in a loss of £2.32M. Cardiovascular at Genoa spun a small profit of £16,000 with the sale of Mirko Lamantia, while also drawing 1-1 with Barcelona B, the A-Team managed by Haowan Madridstas with their 4-0 win over Deportivo B being the only highlight of July. Jonte Rhodes’s Lazio won one game 3-0 but lost the next 2-3, while Roma, managed by Clark Aitken, won 3-0 over Rio Ave, Portugal, in their only action of the 24 days. Rounding off the report, Tom Smith’s Arsenal played three pre-season games including a 4-0 win over Boreham Wood, while Andy Morton’s Real Sporting beat San Martín 7-0.

Although Liam Ferguson had a great pre-season, that wasn’t without a massive spend, and Neji Hyuuga was also a candidate after 9 unanswered goals and no spending of money, including European progression, but James Salter excelled on both fronts: he made a cunning profit of £2.7M, the highest of any club, with Andre da Conceiçao’s come close, £100k short, and he also won both his friendly games by a combined score of 6-1.
