Why is ten years old game considered to be best in series by many?

Personally I prefer cm 97/98, although 01/02 is good. I dont know why people prefer it tho', reminiscent memories of when a lot of hardcore players first got into the series possibly.

Have a look on ebay for a copy, or even try pc world, and have a go, then you will understand

You don't even need to buy the game any more DevonSpurs, the game is available for download from the CM website (for free & leagally, of course).

In a few words? Just because it was awesome!

But I never play older versions. CM0102 was the best game for its time and I enjoyed it like no other manager, but there's no way I'll play that again. I'm playing fm09 today, as I'll be playing fm2010 the next year and so on

I never played CM01/02, and may be tempted to download it from there just out of curiosity.
I'm assuming that even with a modicum of managerial nous I could clean up?

CM 01-02 was simple, easy and fast! It made tactical importance low and introudced many successful new features and there was in those days no such things as bugs!!

Because it was the best, most awesome game ever!

A tribute to how good it was is that on Ebay, a revised copy of the game including January transfers and every new player etc, with background pics was sold for £28 on ebay.

    I bidded £1

You could blitz through the game with a number of super tactics, and super players. A limited amount of leagues meant that you could run all of them. It was the final of the CM3 series, and as SI were then as they do now implementing changes gradually, it was the culmination of what they had learnt throughout the CM3 series. It was also the game where the on-line community really began to take off. There had been one before, but it really expanded with 01/02. From which the super tactics and super players flowed.

It was also when I first noticed people complaining about Super-keepers, too many shots for so few goals, the AI asking for ludicrous amounts of money when attempting to buy the worlds best players and that SI had made it so that the game would decide you would lose and there was nothing you could do! Even though you had a Super Tactic and the Worlds Best players! And what about all these injuries eh?

It had at least three patches, the last of which tended to make long games unstable. And even then there were bugs such as managers not being replaced for teams that were in a background league. Fixtures getting so congested that once I saw a Spanish season that had 99 games played in a single day. Again in Spain, Barcelona C winning not only the league but the Champions League. And of course, there were people who didn't have computers that could cope with it then.

There's a lot of nostalgia for the game, but it occasionally is too rosey eyed. It had problems. It was still fun though. Still can be. So long as you accept what's in the game and play to those parameters, not to what you think should be.

Because it was my first Manager game. Funny enough I got this game from a cereal box. Thats how it started for me!! From there onwards I had the love of the game but since Football Manager 2008 I lost a bit of interest.

I have no idea why anyone would prefer CM 01/02 to FM 09 to be honest, I spent a few hours downloading it the other day, started it up all excited...

    And it was absolutely ££££!

Best tactic is 4-4-2 with your full backs running 3/4 of the pitch, your centre mid running up to strike . your wingers running up to fr and fl etc.

Some good players I can remember and tactics on CM0102:

    TACTICS:
    ...FC......FC...
    ......AMC........
    ..MC.MC.MC.....
    .....................
    DL..DC..DC..DR
    .....................
    ........GK.........

Have your left back and right back run up to alongside the midfield.
Have the the two wider midfield players run out towards the corner flags.
Have your attacking midfielder run inbetween the strikers.

    PLAYERS:

    DL: Julio Arca
DC: Taribo West (free, I think)
DC: Imbrahim Said (or something along those lines, just type in Said)

    MC: Stefan Selakovic
MC: Josep Guardiola (free, I think)
MC: Kennedy Barkigulahuishussiiepkfihfish (dont know his last name, looks something like that though, haha)
    AMC: Kim Kalstrom

FC: To Madiera (must buy, only about 20,000 as well)
FC: Kevin Phillips (played well around that point in his career)

    ALSO consider theese players:
    Lucas Neil
    David Prutton

I will take a look on my windows 98 PC sometime and give a list of some more quality players

People like it because it was a quality game at the time. I still play the game unpatched. There are no serious bugs in the game (like further releases) and at the time even an average computer could easily do a season in 5-6 hours. It mixed pleasure with speed. Players personality seemed to shine a bit more in the gmae i thought. Anelka was a prime example of this. You would sign him and he would be content at the club. Ive seen him at clubs where hes got upto 10 negative comments about the club/manager/players where he was.

It was amazing at the time, but i recently downloaded it and it sucks so bad.

TBH my best of all time is still fm07, it was cm 01/02 before that, so it looks like the game goes in 5 year cycles i guess - meaning we wont see another good FM until 2012

03/04 was my game of choice.

That said, I probably couldn't go back even if I wanted to. I get addicted to new features. No 3d would be a dealbreaker now. :-p

its considered the best in the series by people who enjoyed it more at the time than they enjoy FM09, CM9798 was my first, favourite and best in the series because of how much i liked it at the time, but obviously its not as good in 2009

I consider ISS on the original Playstation to be the best football game ever but i would think it was crap if i played it for the first time today

I'm guessing it's still considered best in series by many because it was fast, easy and most importantly, FUN! You could just pick it up and play without the need of reading hundreds of pages of tips and guides, that most of the time don't even work, in order to succeed. It wasn't very realistic but let's be honest, the match engine in FM 09 isn't very realistic either and the game is now nowhere near as fun as it used to be.

Personally I don't think CM 01/02 is best in series but I can certainly see why would someone prefer it over the newer versions. Most people who didn't play it would probably not like it now but at that time, it was a brilliant game.

I do remember the stadium expansion bug where stadiums in Brazil and Italy would grow out of control, which was later fixed in a later patch. One World Cup Final at the Maracana in the 2040s was played in front of 620,000 fans in my game iirc.

I remember it was the days before internet was readily available (at least for me) and I actually found the game incredibly difficult at first. But once you got a hang of where to look for players you'd soon dominate, even if it did take you quite a while to reach the top.

Gawd its funny how you always remember some of the "must have players from thsese games"

I saw West and Kallstrom and started laughing, i gave 01/02 some hard play when i was at Uni !!

Was that the one with Simon Davey and Matthew Etherington also ?
I remember that they were awesome and "oddly" (lol) both got signed to Spurs IRL

Sometimes i wonder if someone at Spurs was sat on CM

    A number of reasons

People jumping on the band wagon. Saying a previous version is better gives people a justified reason for criticizing new games without being labelled trolls for doing so

It's easy for nostalgia to cloud a persons judgement. CM 01/02 had many bugs, it was very unrealistic in many areas, it was too shallow and the commentary was repetitive, but it was the best we had available back then so we knew no better

It was easy to exploit, it was easy to win, it was easy to finish seasons in a few hours. Perhaps that's why it's so favourable amongst the rushers who are so eager to get through seasons (why I have no idea)

It's easy to look at old games with rose tinted glasses, we only remember the good points, but in reality CM 01/02 is not even on the same level as the FM series, at least not if you are serious about football managing games

    I actually enjoy Fm08 quite a bit.
Although im finding a lot of the regens are starting to get repetative.
Lots of Bravery 20 and low physicals, finding it hard to get young defenders with pace

    Yep.

The game where you could build a team from the swedish league for a few million and take on the world.
Speed - you could easily get through a season in a few hours. Nowadays I have to play for over 24 hours just to get through half a season.
Maxim Tsigalko and Andri Sigporsson, the actual players stats didn't seem to matter at times, the strikers either had it and scored by the shedload or they didn't.
Supertactics that took advantage of the bug in the match engine.
It was just immense fun at the time. Bigger isn't always better. It was easy to get into and hard to get out of.

Nostalgia often disappoints, but I still get the craving to play this every year or 2 for a while.

As strange as it is, speaking about that "nostalgia often disappoints", I've always tend to find with previous series that as much as I loved 0102 and 9798 (my personal favourite), going back to them now is just unplayable for me. Not in the sense of enjoyment, but understanding the game. The series has evolved so much technically that I find the game easier to deal with and manage ingame than previous versions. I'm never quite sure why.

0102 with the "super tactics" and things I never agreed with, though on the whole the game was enjoyable. I just found the gameplay for me made my preferred style of LLM too difficult during the CM3 series for some reason - I always used to start with Rochdale or Wigan Athletic in 9798 days!

Its got me all thinking and I would love to go back and play 9798 now.Trouble is I need to get BootCamp set up and find an emulator to slow the processor down!.....

This is a good thread - its nice to read this and remember just how much I love the series, just a shame I can't put in as much hours as I used to.

I recently played 01/02 and just couldn't get along with it at all. The GUI is just awful to use and ugly (back then it was the dogs...). Lots of features I've now taken for granted in the recent years (2007-2009) I find it hard to deal without. Knowing where a players best position is for example is now key when selecting transfer targets. Granted I've also grown up a lot more and I enjoy the tactical aspects of the game more than back then when it was still a bit of fun. That whole positioning thing (wibble/wobble?) in 01/02 still confuses me to this day too. Hell I went back to playing 2007 a few weeks back and struggled to cope without my fitness view for my squad (having to look up each players fitness is now considered a pain to me, especially during pre-season).
Whilst the game was amazing then (I do prefer CM2) and a whole lot of fun I don't think I could ever really go back to using a system like that now that I've been spoilt by features of FM.

People remember only the good points if they thought the game was actually great at the time. If people didn't like it then they wouldn't be too nostalgic about it would they?

After that game came CM4, regarded by some as the worst in the CM/FM series, and some people didn't like the direction the game was evolving so they stuck with CM01/02. They didn't like the games that followed either, so they stuck with CM01/02. The reality that its not on the same level as FM is only your opinion and belittling those for simply not following the herd is poor in mine. There will always be bugs in every game, but not everyone places the same importance on the ones in CM01/02 that you and the same goes for the realism. I could say it is easy for you to look back now and say the game was unrealistic when you have FM09 sitting on your hard drive.

But I never play older versions. CM0102 was the best game for its time and I enjoyed it like no other manager, but there's no way I'll play that again. I'm playing fm09 today, as I'll be playing fm2010 the next year and so on

A tribute to how good it was is that on Ebay, a revised copy of the game including January transfers and every new player etc, with background pics was sold for £28 on ebay.

    I bidded £1
Somebody got ripped off. The game itself is available for free and the data updates are made at http://www.champman0102.co.uk/forum/

You know what would be interesting. Someone made CM 01/02 with the 3d look, but the 01/02 engine, with the updated game. It might be impossible, but if one day we could do that, would be amazing.

Think i'm going to download this and have a bash on it today. I've got all nostalgic now.

Quick question - Does it play and process a lot faster due to the improvement of computers?

01/02 was awesome, the game was fun then, whilst I do enjoy the tactical side of the later versions, because of time constraints and other responsibilites I never get further than 5 or 6 years into the game, 01/02 I regularly got 25 years or so in, I remember taking Rushden & Diamonds to champions league success in that version.

May go on a nostalgia trip on download it!

Nostalgic though I am, and have enjoyed the series right from the very first Championship Manager, which I played on an Amiga (and the original Football Manager even further back on a Speccy!!), I've revisited some of the older versions and just can't get into them again.

They were all great in their day, but what we have now has surpassed them all by far.

You can download it from Eidos websits. If you search the forums you can down load what they call the "tapanified" update. You can then update 01/02 to January 2009 !!!! If will even show the game starting in September 2008 !!! (You have to change a few options).

I found it works fine with vista once i have changed compatibility. Oh, and you can change the speed of the game too. You can make it run faster or slower

I am playing FM09 but occasionally have a little blast with 01/02.

Loads of people on otf2 play it, not sure why. Loved 02/03 on xbox, just a shame that the thing had a 25 season limit. Shocking.

There are several reasons why it is so fondly remembered:

1 - It was the last version of FM/CM where a season could be completed in one evening's play (it would be an evening that finished at 0300, but anyway...)

2 - It was the last of the CM3 series, which really could be described as the pinnacle of the building work on the game since the original CM.

3 - It came immediately before the 'troubled' CM4

4 - With the right formation and players you could blitz the game with a minimum of effort.

And most importantly, as Insert Goal Here stated:

It didnt have the slider system and was pretty fast. You didnt loose lots of time just to play a season which made it very fun to play.

I would love to have this version with updated roster&date&competitions etc. A kind of "lite" version of FM...

And because it came before CM4.

It ran a lot faster, so you could play far in into the future - working a full time job etc means that a season can take a couple of weeks to complete but in CM 01/02 you could completed several seasons in that time. Also you could produce stupidly good teams such as a liverpool team with Beckham, Giggs, Keane and Zidane in it (plus Del Piero up front). I guess it wasn't all that realistic in those terms but it was good fun.

Did you get an error message? What db version are you using? Did you choose all leagues as active (including the "extra" leagues i.e. Conference, Serie C etc.)?

I had the same problem with an edited db (based on version 3.9.62, but game patched to 3.9.68) and all possible leagues selected. The problem was Swedish Second Division, and not selecting that solved the problem.

CM0102 really was, & still is awesome. Am back with FM2009 for now but know at some point 0102 will grab me back again. Rarely mentioned but to me it seemed you could buy a potentially good player (if you used your in game knowledge) and they would, in a winning team, almost without fail develop into excellent players. Poor would still be poor, though.

It was the most realistic game of the series by a mile, no bugs and everything worked like it was supposed to. Even the awards section was spot on ie Player of the year etc..

FM09 is not far behind though, regen issue has finally been sorted and is perfect imo. Improved AI and CM01/02 awards system would make the game the most realistic and fun ever

Regen issue has not been sorted IMO. I use FMRTE to watch Turkish top teams. In the begining of the game, their top 10 players has 140s-130s in CA, about 20 years into game, it rises to 150s-140s CA. A human manager can without problem collect players with 150s-160s as CA. The same applies to rest of the teams in the league, even mediocre teams has 130s-140s in the league after 15-20 years.

fm09 is way behind, it's riddled with faults and bugs, it's a half-completed product and SI should apologize for letting us paying customers down so badly.
You are right what you said about cm01/02 though, now looking back it definetly was way ahead of time, 7 years onwards and they still can't make anything comparable with it, it propably was the best football managing game ever! then ONLY problem cm01/02 had was conserning the regens, and especially the lack of it. Back then, with the availabe 'not-top-end' computers, you could choose maby 3 leagues in total when playing, and all the other leagues had only a couple of regens coming through annually.
But anyway, in every other regard, fantastic game, i played that same version until 2005, and this fm09 is the first game managing game i've bough since that one. And now i wish i would had just bought a pirate version of this game, it's not worth actually paying money for it. I'm not saying it's totally krap, it can be enjoyable at times, but way too many faults, seriously takes the shine of the game.

I have this horrible habbit of buying the games and then barely playing them since Championship Manager 03/04. I'll buy the game play for about a month, get bored then a couple of months later(around January) i'll want to play but can't because i know the new transfer window patch is coming out so i have to wait for that. Then i'll play for a few months and before you know it there's talk about the next FM game and all the features so i can't play anymore until the new one comes out. So i wouldn't mind if they skipped 2010(at least i'd get my moneys worth for once)

    I think i have OCD ;)

My favourite of the series by a mile! Was so simple and easy to play. teams always accepted friendlys and the whole gameplay was fantastic. You could build teams the right way and it had features that even the games now don't.

Its all about nostalgia, nothing more. I wasnt an active member of the fm-cm community at the time of the game, but i had it and i loved it. Its the game that drawn me in to the CM/FM series (and should be available for free download as its such a highly thought of game from si, unless eidos are holding onto it)

It would be labelled as garbage now as times have moved on, but so would space invaders, pong, the first mortal kombat or Final Fantasy 7. Just a top game at its time

Wrong! At this moment in time I have Cm01/02, Fm2009, and Cm03/04 all installed on my PC. And of the three I find myself playing '03/04 the most, and '09 the least. Why? Because I prefer a game that is fun to play, properly tuned, and doesn't have gazillions of unrealistically implemented features slowing it down. Blind nostalgia ISN'T the reason.

Whoah where did the "blind" in blind nostalgia come from? I wasnt slagging anyone off in my comment, it was a great game at the time. Maybe you should change your name to angry git.

Um, no, it really wouldn't. The CM01/02 ME was probably a lot worse than 09's- but you couldn't see it, so it was effectively bugless. With 3D, it would be worse than any ME since 2D was introduced.

Now, if you converted FM07's ME to 3D

Nostalgia is an idealized longing for things, therefore by inference it must also be pretty blind. I wasn't slagging anyone off either, I was just disagreeing. Maybe you should calm down instead, heh.

Two things that spring to mind when CM01/02 is mentioned:

    Fernando Torres and Mark Kerr.

I think is because how fast it is. In a little bit of hours you can play a complete season. In newer versions (CM and FM booth) it spend much more time.

I love how this very thread contains mention of Barcelona C winning the champion's league in 01/02, yet you're still claiming that the regens were the only problem.

The reason I found 01/02 fun, was because it's essentially the "arcade" version of management which lots of people clearly still want: you don't have to do a lot of management, you just buy some good players, do some craziness with the arrows on your tactics and watch the AI unravel
(or rather, read the AI unravel - I remember when the 2d version was introduced realising how often I had misinterpreted the commentary.)

It's unwillingness to over-complicate is commendable, however - whilst press conferences do exist, they're not particularl satisfying: managers also have to go to the loo, but I don't want this in the game. (especially not in 3d).

It's just awesome, obviously the newer versions got cool features, but even for this time it's a solid game.
It's not bloated like some other versions, it works fast too.

    It's awesome.

Good times. I remember playing 01/02 while watching every world cup game on tv at the same time. Good times indeed.

I was only 10 years old and cm 01/02 was the first cm/FM game I had. Had played management games like LMA before but nothing in the depth of that game. I couldn't go back and play it now after playing the recent Fm's but have so many good memories and probably better ones than I have had on the FM games. Tactically the game was easier and you could find wonder players like cherno samba who like always turned into 30 mill striker. I think for me this was good as I'm sure if it had been as complex as the game is now it would have been way out of my depth at such an age and I would have got easily frustrated and just given up.

CM0102 was the first CM for me too, had played a Dutch football manager game before it, but the game had too many limitations... I remember it was a special edition as it was the 10th Championship Manager game. I still got it actually, though I don't play it anymore. Have to say the box art is the best one that's ever been out there for CM/FM.

The reason I liked it so much was simply because it was my first version and because nearly all my friends played it too. Once we got together at school our CM stories was all we'd talk about all day.

I played the game after I got a copy of the demo in a breakfast cereal.

In my opinion it is the best CM/FM for allround playability (am loving FM09 though!). I still sometimes dip back into the past & play CM0102 and the FM09 crowd sounds are a step back from this 2001 vintage game which I have never understood why.
