I personally had no plans involving 3D on any of my shortlists (basically long term To-Do lists). I would have much more preferred a polished 2D presentation with decent moving graphics (not just dots with sticks), additional graphical presentation (refs, ref signals etc.) and a better, more polished sound world. Hell, between me, Graeme and Ed, I don't think any of us would have even known how to code a proper 3D engine. Granted, the current 2D engine would have been a nice foundation with some tweaks on the performance. It actually tracks z-coordinates as well, so on the physics level it is 3D, even though the presentation is in 2D.

I would have never even thought of doing a 3D engine just for the sake of "going 3D". There was a german hockey management game that had an english demo going around a few years back which had a 3D engine for playing the games. I personally didn't like it much, not the animation nor the AI, but you should be able to find it still and make up your own mind on how 3D could work on a management sim.

There were tons of great ideas on the list for the future, not just "new features" but basically things that would have made the game more playable, enjoyable and more customizable for example.

Maybe some day we will get to work on some of them, one way or another. But for the time being, it'll all go into the x-files...

I'm devastated. I was so happy when I saw that the new patch was out and then this "important announcement" just kinda worried me.

I don't know if I'm stupid or passionate, but I'll keep hope that it comes back soon.

Your efforts are much appreciated Thumbs Up

I hope that you guys, together with these forums, can keep the community around the NHL EHM series going, the same way fhockey.com has been keeping the old freeware game on the scene. And hey, development on that one stopped about 5 years ago and people are still enjoying it. So hopefully the NHL EHM series will offer everyone similar long term enjoyment even if we cannot develope the game further for now.

Well, time for me to pitch in here for what it's worth. This is the best game and development team on the planet. Bar none. Like Graeme and Riz and for this version EdL, I too have lived this game and loved through this game for the past several years. I am still awestruck at the dedication and hard work that the EHM team has put into this game on a 24/7 basis since before its initial release.

It's a shame the bastards brought it all down, from the hackers to the P2P people to the incessantly byatching "this game is unplayable people complaining about what really are minor issues. Well, I hope all of the previous are happy now.

Away from the negative though, I want to put out a heartfelt thanks to Riz and Graeme who I consider friends I've never met, ditto to all the people who supported the game and The Blue Line. You guys are a special group of people that I will never... EVER forget. This game and it's development course is absolutely amazing Eek We've all gotten spoiled by how much you put into each version, each patch. People, go back and fire up EHM 2004 and marvel in awe of the most amazing development effort in gaming. It is truly a shame that like all great TV shows this too has been cut down in it's prime. Not working on this game's testing/development will be like losing a job you love, like dating a supermodel and having her break up with you for your sister, like waking up just a moment too soon from a realllllly good dream. Etc. It's like losing a friend and a limb, and the sun will never shine quite as brightly again.

Amen amigo. Please people continue to come to The Blue Line and celebrate this great game and the freinds from accross the world we've made by running the site. Not for us that run the site but to keep the dream alive. Do it for Graeme and Riz and the future of EHM that will some day rise from the ashes like a Phoenix, and yes, we'll be there waiting.

Well, you guys really know how to give a guy a rollercoaster day with the up of the patch and the down of the development stop.

As a fan of hockey in Canada I came across the freeware version by fluke as I ended up on a site of an online league that was using it. Since then I have played the game frequently.

I PURCHASED digital downloads for 2005 and 2007 (2 copies one for Mac and PC) and would have gladly bought all future versions. but I guess its not enough to pay all of your salaries!

I have to agree about the whole 'advertising problems'. I was surpised to see such low results from Canadian orders. it seems there are a lot of Canadians on the site. BUT, I have NEVER, not even once seen an ad in print or visual form in Canada, and I am in Edmonton, the hotbed of hockey (sorry Montreal).

Not one add. I guess I don't know much about the logistics and expense of overseas advertising but I think Sega really messed up on this one. I have no doubt that with even a little advertising that the game would have taken off in Canada. After all we are the 'hockeypool' capital of the World!

I showed a few friends the program and almost all of them purchased the game. Imagine what advertising would have done. I know it costs money to do so, but to make money..... Canadian hockeyfans would have embraced this, it's ease of use, addictive qualities and power of control as a NHL GM would have resulted in minimum double the Canadian sales.

It's too bad a few people couldn't have set up booths in some of the NHL rinks for fans to see the game, or at trade shows, fairs in the major Canadian markets. Heck I would have stood in the lobby of Rexall place with a laptop and EHM tshirt if needed to drum up support. It's too bad the loyal EHM fan base didn't have some warning before the plug was pulled to try and do some more footwork to keep the game going. Just like Crosby the potential is HUGE, but without awareness, the profits simply don't come.

We at least still have 3 versions of the game and Riz's freeware to keep the hockey fix but it just won't be the same waiting in anticipation of the new version and new patch.

I will visit your grave often, just in case by some chance you arise from the dead. Let's hope that this hockey miracle happens!

At the very least, let me offer one word: "replayability". I don't think I'll have any trouble keeping the spirit alive until the world is ready for another EHM.

In my books, EHM = MONEY WELL SPENT

Not likely on any of the fronts. Greydog seems to use their own type of interface and it seems their developers are tied up, I wouldnt want to see clay from Sports Mogul even attempt a game like this in what Ive seen from Football Mogul, and I hope you are joking with the EA sports comment, they could wreck this game very fast.

Wow. Terrible news.

I can't say I'm surprised. The writing on the wall was the digital download ...

Anyway, this is/was a great game.

I felt 'gutted' as a buyer when online was snuffed.

Anyway, your game was unique in that, as it good as it was and detailed as it was, it really inspired players to put their imagination to the test and imagine everything they'd like to see in a game ...

Here's what I think would be successful.

Add one part Sim City and one part Eastside Hockey Manager ...

SIM Sports Tycoon ...

It might not work with hockey (limited market). I'd try it with football or baseball.

I'm so disappointed now.

Bought the first and the second game. And I was
saving for a new computer and waited until
that time to buy the third EHM. If I had known I would have bought the game the day it was released.....

But I have to admit that I was very sceptical
about buying the game through digital download and wanted to wait until I got my new Mac.

Best games I have ever played.

Yeah, now we need a support group to do undercover work, kinda like some street team. I like the T-shirt idea.

A Sports Interactive cloth badge would be awesome too. Would look great in my student overalls. Cool

This totally sucks, i know myself and others made a concerted effort to encourage people to buy the game, we have a Canucks.com group of people that are in an online league, but i knew the game was doomed when more people asked for it to be cracked than actually owned the game, pathetic how many people cant just cut off starbucks for a week, or McDonalds for a week to buy such an amazing, open ended, and imaginative game, it's times like this that make me lose hope in some people, and lose hope in quality games.

Sad news. I started back in the freeware days (still remember people arguing over whether it was better to upgrade to 1.18 or stick with 1.16, or whether it was better to use 1.15b for the draft then switch to the other one for the season, or...), and loved it from the getgo. One problem with the game it that it was so good that I never really felt the urge to get the next couple editions of the paid game when they came out.

But this year, after watching my brother and Dad play over Christmas, I needed to buy it myself, and so I actually bought the game. Probably about the first game that I bought, and it's been worth every penny (and all 50-60 hours I've spent playing it this last month).

Now, we all complain about how little marketing there was, and maybe it would have been interesting to see how it would have done if it was sold in stores. Unfortunately, I think it suffers from a lack of hockey fans around the world, and the fact that most people would rather play the arcade games than worry about their budget and scouting for prospects.

Sad to see it go, but the game does look very nice, and I'm sure it will remain a very playable game for many, many years to come.

Nobody will be taking on this game, as the EHM team are distributed among other projects at SI as per Miles' original post.

OOTP is as always unaffected by anything to do with EHM.

I'm also sorry that Eastside won't be continued. It's made me into a hockey fan, starting back in 2004 with a 3-day demo on the game and crash course on hockey from Riz... I'll definitely still be in the camp of people playing the game.

I think the sentiments thanking the team are well placed - it can be a real challenge getting a game out when you're part of a small team and they worked hard to get an amazing quality product together.

I've read some of the criticism about the marketing and wanted to provide a bit of information on it.

I'd estimate that we spent, in percentage terms, more per unit of Eastside sold than per unit of FM sold. That doesn't, however, add up to a massive campaign, as some of you have pointed out - but we were never going to be able to spend millions on Eastside and expecting TV ads and huge outdoor posters, frankly, is a pipedream.

I'm satisfied (as were SI who approved all marketing activity) that the campaigns were well designed and targeted as many people who were likely to get involved in playing the game as we could possibly reach. We promoted the product online, made the try before you buy demo as widely available as possible, we ran press releases with all our licensors (incidentally, the licensing for this product was a genuinely massive task that took months and months of people's time over the last 3 years) and also with as many specialist gaming press sites and hockey fan sites (most of the ones you provided to us on these forums, also) in the hope that they'd help us publicise the product.

In short, we did all that we could reasonably do. Somewhere, the investment in marketing has to start paying returns and while it's fair to say that Eastside was a top quality product, ultimately hockey lacks football's global appeal. We didn't ever think we'd sell Eastside like FM, none of us - but we hoped we'd get cut through and achieve a comfortable niche of sales that would continue to fund the development of the game. We went through 3 releases trying to make that happen and that's a fair crack of the whip.

As far as I'm concerned - we did the best marketing job we could do in difficult circumstances. A long hockey lockout didn't help us much, but it's not the reason we're stopping. Piracy definitely didn't help us as Miles has already indicated.

Hope this gives a little insight into the fact that we supported Eastside, and tried to make it work. It was a team effort, but up to this point, it hasn't come off... so apologies for your disappointment.

Cheers

Matt

Very very sad news, Im shocked.

Many thanks to Riz,Kelly and the other guys who worked with the game specially Riz.

I have played the game since the start of
Eastside and remember all the work Riz put it
to the game fixing and patching and turning the game to a hit.

I hope some day this game starts up again and bring the hockeyfans a joy to the life wich has done to me.

We will never forget the Eastside and you Riz.

No time for a post mortem, but I find it interesting, reading a different thread, that two of the first four people said they first heard about EHM at hfboards.com ...

It's really a damn shame that SEGA pulled the plug or SI pulled the plug without trying some really cheap but perhaps effective marketing ...

What's "hockey crazy" country?
Canada.

What does your game provide Canadians that other games don't provide?

A top-to-bottom look at NHL franchises, from EURO prospects to NHLers, from trainers, to the assistant GM ... From draft day to the day the Cup is raised ...

Also, you guys had playable junior canadian leagues ...

Now, where might one find Canadian hockey fans who actually get upset about EHM's ratings of a Belorusian picked 155th overall in 2004?

Hfboards.com ...
The place is filled with hockey nerds ... Every freaking weak, they have threads where posters redo hockey drafts involving players that the casual hockey fan has never even heard of ...

With everything your game offered, EHM and hockeysfuture should have been a marriage made in heaven ...
You give the game free publicity in your game (in the news messages about prospects and the draft).

They a) help you do accurate player rankings, and b)
