The things Football Manager makes you do!

Recommended Posts

When i was around 11 years of age, i went round my friends house to play "Championship Manager 2000-01". I loved it and to my surprise i found my self strangly hooked on this game that i couldnt play. On release day, for Championship Manager 2001-02 i begged my mum for some money ( i had £20 and needed a little more for the purchase). She declined my proposal. So i did it, i stole from my own mother! Not only that, the way i did it made me feel dirty for years!

I got the tenner from my mum's purse and took it outside into the garden. I then tactically(just like i do in FM!) placed it in the bushes. When my mum ventured out into the garden to put out the washing, I went outside to play football in the garden. This is where i "accidentally" kicked the ball into the bushes, where i mysteriously found an old 10 pound note! I wonder where it could have come from...

To this day i still think my mum knows what i did, but admired my ingenuity.

Has anyone else gone to extreme lengths to get hold of a Football Manager game?

1) Smash the protective screen for my monitor by punching through the glass when I threw away a 2-0 lead versus Hadjuk in the Uefa Cup with Swansea.

2) Make endless cup of teas and batches of toast (coz, food/drink wise, that's all you can do when you're 8, isn't it?) for my brother in exchange for his 'CM time' when I was desperate to stay on.

3) On about the 15th of December, went upstairs and searched for half an hour in my parents' room to find where they'd hidden the new CM (we'll say it was 99/00 for argument's sake, though it may have been earlier) as I couldn't wait 'til xmas day. Took the CD out, replaced it with the disc for 98/99 thinking my parents probably wouldn't notice, and went downstairs and played 99/00 right through, then on Christmas day had to act desperate to play my, err, new game.

4) Several punch ups with brothers

5) As we speak, it's preventing me from studying for my English Lit exam.

6) Put on weight, because there's nothing better than tucking into a nice ham sandwich whilst it continues game (particularly important in the days of having a crap PC).

7) Lose weight, because doing laps around the back garden after a last gasp winner at Hillsborough is, naturally, good exercise.

8) It's probably gonna make me go to Leicester uni rather than Leeds, as Leeds want me to get an A in English Lit...

9) Cry. I genuinelly went to bed sobbing one night after an horrific playoff defeat with Redditch (and given that it's Redditch, that gives away that this wasn't a long time ago!).

10) I'd be surprised if I didn't kill someone, including myself, because of footy manager at some point in my life.

lol@Niall

I don't know whether to get you a trophy or professional help.

I've upset a girlfriend in my time and heard the "You care more about that stupid video game than me!" line a million times. When will they understand it's not stupid!?

I am now 30 and married and have recently been getting back to my special "fm time" well most evenings and weekends :)

I still get it in the ear that it's just a game and "you dont even play the game yourself"

She even moans the next day when I have stayed up til the early hours playing, even though she was fast asleep in bed so wouldnt be able to tell if I was in bed or not.

Bloody women :)

same here, i have found that I sometimes lie about what time I turn in after a long night time session. hope that isn't the start of something serious!

I may start lying and just pretend that im tired due to watching tv all night.

Every night lately it gets to about 8.30-9pm and I am like so shall we go to bed. I know full well as soon as she lays down about 30 mins later she will be asleep. As soon as she is asleep I sneek off downstairs. :)

Is this sad for a man my age? You dont have to answer ha ha ha

Just be careful you dont get accused of doing 'stuff' on the computer if you know what i mean, has happened to me. It was with great delight that i proved to her i wasn't 'cheating' but was merely being a 25 year old man sneaking downstairs to play a computer game. :)

My girlfriend HATES the game. I went round the other night saying "oh yeah, of course I'll spend all my time with you", and I was thinking "damn, no FM tonight!"

But then I remembered she had wanted to do her CV, and her laptop was away being fixed and the family desktop was broken. So I turned up at hers, laptop in hand, and gave her the impression I'd brought it round to help her do her CV. I went to set up iWork (I have a MacBook) and then said "awww it's not working for some reason", clearly making it up, but with enough of the right tone so that she thought I was telling the truth.

I sat at the other end of the bed for a couple of hours "trying to fix it". She was NOT happy when she found out! :p

I made it all better though ;) haha

When I let my mum on my laptop i have to tell her to leave FM09 on because I can't be bothered to click the button to open it again.

I start talking to myself infront of my family .. so my family think I am some mental freak.

When I drink my booze I feel bad that my players on FM09 can't .. even when Torres scores a hat trick and you just want to celebrate with him.

I have to hold my pee in as I can't miss a single thing on FM09 so I end up on the floor holding my privates.

I run around the room when we score and pretend im the goalscorer and celebrate with the "Aeroplane" celebration.

I ask my sister to shake my hand at the end of each game(i get her to pretend shes the other teams manager)

When I won the Champions League win West Ham in FM08 I did go into my kitchen, get out a silver tray and walk round the front room parading it to the waiting journo's and paps. Unfortunately for me it was only my mrs and her mum who had come round for a cup of tea.

She still looks at me in a strange way

I remember the main reason I passed my GCSEs was because my old amiga broke so I couldn't play any more cm9495. Usual plan was getting home from school, sticking it on then going to bed 10 mins before my folks got up in the morning to make it look as if I'd slept all night. I had no chance of passing uni when cm2 came out however...

Whilst playing CM 01/02 I held a whole press coference whilst on the toilet about my upcoming appearance in the champions league final, my girlfriend heard it and thought I had gone quite mad!

Can I just add that I had no idea that my press conference had been out loud!!

I am guilty of doing commentary for the game.............I once took my gf out to dinner after finally winning the American Second Division on CM4. I had lost 4 straight finals and finally won, I was so happy I called her up and told her to get ready cause we were celebrating; When she asked what we were celebrating I just said "Celebrating our love."
