I think you can install the patch anywhere, but I could be wrong?

i thought/think u just the run file after downloading the patch and then it installs automatically, have to admit im not sure though

tried installing the file, but it asks for me to install it into a specific location.....struggling as I don't know where to put it.

Have you extracted it?

when you install it it will have a default address to install to, if your install is not the default you just have to point it at the equivalent on your install - so yes, just point it at the fm folder and run

If so do I put the folder in the data folder?

I think it should just be /footballmanager2009 mate - can't get at a mac to confirm that right now but by the sounds of it you shouldn't have to change it from the default the patch installer gives!

Applications/Sports Interactive/Football Manager 2009 should be default.
