CaptainPlanet
I'd love the ability to retire a shirt number, particularly if a legend for your club retires.
4457
It's in the game for FM09, as far as I'm aware...
digsy11
You can! That's a new feature introduced this year.

NielsWSE
You all say that we can....but how about telling us how?
CrashOverride
You all say that we can....but how about telling us how? I "presume" that if a club favourite retires and he is still in his orginal shrit then you get the option to retire that number? Havent made it that far yet personally
peter-evo
You all say that we can....but how about telling us how? that bit i haven't worked out
stevio11
Can someone please tell me why number 23 is retired by Manchester city.
4457
Marc-Vivien Foé.
digsy11
I don't know how as I've not played long enough at one club. I presume you will be giving the option when the player retires/leaves your club.
peter-evo
Can someone please tell me why number 23 is retired by Manchester city. Marc Vivien Foe wore that number before his tragic death a few years ago.
Negatrev
You all say that we can....but how about telling us how? I don't think you can choose to do it, I think it's an option prompted to you. I sell most old players so I haven't seen it yet.
CaptainPlanet
Ok, I feel like a numpty now I've not noticed the option or seen anything about it...
phnompenhandy
Me too. I imagine you'd have to be managing for years and bring a youth through to retirement a la Giggs.
Ediocy
I remember people mentioning that you only get the option of retiring a player's squad number if that player played a lot of 'ingame' seasons for your club. What this means is that if you are managing say Man United and Ryan Giggs were to retire at the end of season 2009/2010, you would not get the option to retire his shirt number. This is because only 2 game years had gone by. So following the previous example, if Jonny Evans goes on and becomes a key player for you and retires in season 2020/2021, you would then get the option of retiring his shirt number as the game then recognises Evans as being a long-serving member of your club. frosty123
Hope you can't do it as its a sad thing to do, unless a player dies. Look at teams like Liverpool or Man Utd, how many number 7s or 9s have they had that are legends??
Ched
Not sure if this feature works - had john terry retire a few days ago and there was no option to retire his number - surely he would be a prime candidate?
Ediocy
Not sure if this feature works - had john terry retire a few days ago and there was no option to retire his number - surely he would be a prime candidate? See my post (4 posts above yours) for the explanation. But yeah, definitely a waste it does not work on legends that are already in the twilight of the careers at game start. But yeah, definitely a waste it does not work on legends that are already in the twilight of the careers at game start. Ah right, hadn't seen your post. Makes sense is suppose, but it would have been nice for it to have included the playing career prior to 2008 as it is stored in the players history screen. But hey-ho, something to add to FM09
108
Not sure if this feature works - had john terry retire a few days ago and there was no option to retire his number - surely he would be a prime candidate? Hmm, if you couldnt do it when he retired then this feature doesnt seem to work. Anyone know what happens when Maldini retires, and if the shirt number is automatically retired like it will be in real life? On a slight different note, I just checked AC's club information and Maldini isnt even listed in favourite personnel, let alone icon or legend. WTF? Thats a bit pathetic. Ando THFC
One other criteria not yet mentioned is that you have to have managed at the club in question for a considerable time before you can get this option, and even then the other criteria must be met (player retires, player is listed as a legend at your club) so no wonder it's rare. And it should be rare, as someone mentioned the vast majority of clubs don't have retired numbers despite true legends throughout their history. Irish_Yid
lyon retired the 17 shirt for foe as well but when makoun joined he took saying that it was on behalf of the whole of cameroon
Arkim
Is there a minimum amount of seasons that the player must spend with the club before this feature is activated? Figured I'd ask as I got a few youngsters who I'm doing my best to nurture (I usually don't succeed).
Nene_Park_Faithfull
Marc Vivien Foe wore that number before his tragic death a few years ago. I found a Marc Vivien Foe premier league sticker book sticker while tidying up yesterday. Ive put it away and will keep it forever

WizOfOzNike
are the current retired numbers in the game? Baresi for example, it maaaaaaaajorly ****es me off when I see some random young player in the number 6.

crafty bison
I don't think you can actively *do* it in FM09. I think it just includes retired numbers from real life.

forzautd
napoli's no 10 is retired. no prizes for saying who's shirt that is. i actually dont like retiring shirt numbers. i think its a much bigger honour (IRL) to give it to the next young star, a la the no.7 at utd. id hate for the number 11 shirt to be retired for giggs. its an iconic number. Exactly. Like the number 7 was at liverpool with McManaman, and should have been for Robbie Keane this season. Re: the Napoli Number 10, can you actually not give it to a player on the game? Re: the Napoli Number 10, can you actually not give it to a player on the game? Very true, Keane isnt having his best season but Rafa'll think of something! I agree, like Liverpool's number 9 is so iconic, with Fowler, Torres, etc
