Hi all.

Loads of people are getting errors and such, and everyones keep on making the same thread. So i'll make this guide for you.

Q) I just put the Football Manager disc into my drive and its not showing up. Why is this?

A) Can be a few reasons. All of the other Football manager games were on CD, but this one (Football Manager 2009) is now on dvd. If you do not have a dvd drive, there is other ways you can do it. Simply install steam (here= http://storefront.steampowered.com/download/SteamInstall.msi ). Then install that, create a new account and then when you've done that. Simply login, and go into the game blade. Then go to activate a product. Next get your serial number from your Football Manager 2009 manual and enter it in the box. When you've done that, it'll start downloading. When thats done (you can tell if it says 100% ready). Simply click launch game and it'll start.

Q) I get a error called "failed to setup graphics system".

A) That can be due to your graphics card drivers and/or Directx. Update your DirectX here = http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=2da43d38-db71-4c1b-bc6a-9b6652cd92a3&displaylang=en). If the problem persists, i think its time for you to get a new graphics card.

Q) How do you uninstall the game?

A) Simply go to Control Panel, then Add or remove programs (programs for Vista). Then click on Football Manager 2009 and click remove.

For Steam. Right click on your game in the games blade, and click delete local content.

Q) I get a error called MATCH_MANAGER::load_tactics() - could not load tactics.

A) Reinstall the game. Follow the instructions above ^, then simply reinstall it.

Q) How do i find what graphics card i have?

A) Simply go into: Start >> Run. Then type in dxdiag into run. Then you'll get a program, go into the display tab. And your graphics card information will be on the left hand side.

Q) My game frequently crashes - at random intervals. Why is this?

A) Can be to do with your graphics card drivers. Simply reply in this thread with which graphics card you have, and i'll give you the download link for the latest drivers for your card.

Q) I get a Direct Sound Error=2004287480

A) Install your latest audio drivers, go in dxdiag for your sound card.

Q) How do i install the latest patch?

A) Download it here: http://rapidshare.de/files/40902317/FM2009v9.1.0Patch.exe (click Free user). When its finished downloaded, run the executable file. If it comes up with a error, then right click on it. And click run as administrator.

But seeing as you've started one, I may as well post some of the info that will go into it here too!

"Failed to set up graphics" error

There is a thread set up that explains how to fix this issue for the majority of graphics cards which are below minimum spec for the game http://www.community.sigames.com/showthread.php?t=63029 - if this doesn't work, then please post a separate thread in the technical support area.

After seeing many many posts asking the same questions, I decided to put together a quick FAQ thread so people can find their answers more easily, or it can be linked to without having to keep explaining the same answers. I'm not going to go through Activation problems, because there are plenty of stickys on the matter and SI are working to get everyone sorted.

Where can I download the patch?

How do I install the patch?

After downloading the patch. You should have a file called 'FM2009_v9.1.0_Patch.exe'. Simply double click it and follow the instructions.

Do I have to start a new game for the patch to take affect?

All change should take effect in save games but it is reccomended that you start a new game. If you want data updates, then you will need to start a new game.

I'm having trouble deciphering some characters in the license key on my Football Manager 2009 packaging.

Lincense Key Help

Follow the above link and type in what you think is your license key. Enter your key below and the system will determine if you have made a mistake and display the correct key below. From here COPY (Ctrl-C) the key and PASTE (Ctrl-V) the key into the Activation Dialog.

Direct X SDK

I keep getting a 'Direct Sound 2004287480' error when trying to launch the game.

Make sure your drivers are upto date and also try the link posted for the previous question.. If you don't know what sound card you have, download Belarc Advisor. When you run that file it will tell you what hardware you have in your system. Under the 'Multimedia' section, it should tell you your sound card. Then use google to find the drivers for it.

I'm trying to install on Windows XP 64-Bit but keep getting an error. Is it possible to install FM09 on this OS?

I have an orange box in the right hand corner of my screen when playing FM.

I keep getting an error when launching/playing FM - 'FM.exe has encountered an error and needs to close'.

To fix this, you should try installing the patch. The patch can be downloaded here.

I chose the wrong activation method when installing FM. Can I change this?

If you chose to activate through Steam but you want to do it another way, or vise versa, you will need to uninstall Football Manager. Once done, you will need to install it again and choose the right option.

How do I run FM09 in Windowed mode?

First look in Options-->Preferences-->Display and Sound and try changing the setting in there. If that doesn't work, or the option is greyed out, quit FM and do the following.

Find your FM shortcut and right click on it, then choose properties. You should see a box called 'Target'. In there you should add the following

-small_screen -windowed

So your target line should then look like this...

"C:\Program Files (x86)\Sports Interactive\Football Manager 2009\fm.exe" -small_screen -windowed
