Previously unable to play, and still can't

I downloaded the demo when it came out, to discover I was unable to play the game. I have downloaded the patch to see if the demo will now work, and instead of being able to see a screen that tells me it can't find FM.EXE, it now goes to the activation screen telling me that the trial period is finished, and that I need to register it.

Can someone please tell me if this patch has allowed me to now play the game? I have yet to buy the game as I don't want to spend £30 on a game I can't play.
