I tend to assign numbers to players and they have to keep it until they leave, so I think in my head that it's their preferred number. I have also 'retired' a number, which basically involves not giving that to anyone else, until perhaps one day I find a player worthy of wearing it. Won't be it good if a Player playing with same Number over 5 consecutive year, having a rating of 7.5 each season, winning laurels for club & with some sort of superstitious nature (people may vary) ; starts to have a preferred squad number....
