Which Laptop shall I buy?!!!

Recommended Posts

I am not massively up on my specs, so need some help. I need a new Laptop for work and seeing as the FM09 Demo won't run on my old Mac or PC. I want to make sure it'll run on the laptop that I buy. Don't want to spend much more than £300 any ideas?!!

Personally - and others may prove me wrong - I would guess that you'll be lucky to get a laptop that will be good enough for anything close to £300. You might conceivably be able to get by playing 2D. But I'm not sure. I set myself a budget of £500 and only found one laptop for that price that was what I was aiming for.

But don't base your decision on my advice alone as I am not an expert. Let's see what others have to say.

300 will, frankly, buy you a laptop either with crap specs or no build quality (or both). If you don't want to spend much, get a desktop. I would say the dell inspiron 1525 is very good value if you want a cheap laptop, but it only has onboard graphics (will run 3D but jerky at high detail). There is also a pretty good free delivery offer on the cheapest new Dell Studio at the moment that looks quite good: http://www1.euro.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/laptop_studio_15?c=uk&cs=ukdhs1&l=en&s=dhs

I could stretch to £400 like the ones above, which would you go for?

Of the options you posted, the last one looks to be the most suitable for what you want.

Edit: Assuming the graphics card is up to the job, I haven't a clue where the post with the list of compatible cards is.

Excuse my ignorance but why is this more suitable than the other Toshiba? I checked the graphics cards and they're both supported.

I think it was the shared graphics that put me off the other one, but wait for someone with slightly better technical knowledge to cast an eye over the specs before ordering.

I have a better feeling about the second toshiba than the first one as well. The other two are not worth your time considering. Have a look at the £429 dell I linked as well, those new Studios look quite well-built.

The Toshiba. The extra gb of memory will come in handy for FM :)

Personally I think anything over 2 Gig doesn't make that much difference unless you have loads of other stuff running at the same time. I have 2 gig and never max out my physical memory. A fast hard drive makes far more difference than that extra gig, but those are expensive.

Couple of other options - this is a pretty good deal but the graphics will again be not so good for high detail setting in 3D: http://direct.tesco.com/q/R.204-6256.aspx

This is a pretty cool offer - again it has shared graphics but they are the best shared graphics you can get: http://www.acerdirect.co.uk/Acer_Aspire_5735Z_Laptop_LX.AU50Y.004/version.asp?refsource=adfroogle

This looks like it might be nice: http://www.morecomputers.com/extra.asp?pn=X50GL-AP008E&referer=Froogle
