Prefered Moves?

If a player has a prefered moves, does that mean they will attempt to do their thing regardless of whether or not you instruct them? For example, what is the difference between a prefered move of a player running through centre with the ball, and you as manager interacting with them to do it?

I read somewhere today that Prefered moves are just cosmetic and doesnt effect the match engine at all.

Not sure if this is true, can someone help?

PPMs are things the player does regularly, its their own style of play.

Any PPMs visible in FM 09 are used by the match engine. The ones not in FM 09, such as tries tricks, cuts inside, tries long range passes, along with several others, are not yet used by the match engine. They were cosmetic in FM 08, but FM 09 only shows the PPMs that are used by the match engine.

So why the need to interact and tell them to do something if they usually do it anyway by default?

Well dont ask players to do something they want to do, is my only suggestion.

For example what? Is there a certain PPM that your wanting a player to or not to do that you would or wouldn't want overwritten by a player instruction?

Nah. Like I said. If a player has a prefered move of running down the middle with the ball etc, it seems contradicting to tell him to do it as well via the player interaction menu.
