Job Applications Query - Keep getting turned down!

Recommended Posts

I've got a slight problem with my Football Manager game at the minute and was wondering whether anyone could help me understand it a bit better. Didn't know which forum to post it in, so decided to put it in this general one.

I'm manager of Newcastle United. We've finished 3rd and 5th in my first two seasons there, and are currently lying fourth in December for the 2009/2010 season. However, I've got a bit tired of trying to make progress with the club and have felt that it is time to move on.

Unfortunately, the computer doesn't seem to agree.

You see, I like to think that I am now known in the game as a pretty good manager. I was offered the Man Utd job after my first season in charge of Newcastle, and was just pipped to the Liverpool job when I applied for it, being a LFC fan, I wanted that job more than any other, although I was still happy then with Newcastle.

But in the summer of 09, I applied for the Lyon, Monaco and Barcelona jobs. Couple of things here. First, Lyon and Monaco rejected me for other candidates I have never heard of before. I felt I had a very good chance of getting one or both of these jobs to at least offer me their job. So I was pretty stunned after this. The Barcelona job I had been linked with in the press, and so accordingly I applied for it, however, they have never responded. Neither have they appointed another manager. It's now December, 6 months after I applied and still no word on what's happening. Wonder whether it has happened to anyone else, and how long I should expect to wait?

And then, just to rub it in, I applied for the CSKA Moscow job and was turned down for that as well. As you can imagine, I was pretty stunned.

So please, can anyone give me a bit of advice on what's going on with my game at a minute? I'm really confused.

Regards,

Liverpool-fc

sounds like a problem with reputation to me. maybe you started as a sunday footballer and the clubs you apply for will not hire a manager with low reputation.

I remember starting a lower league game once with no reputation and I couldn't get a job for 3 years!

It is a lot harder to get a job in another country. First of all do you speak the language? French, Spanish, Italian e.t.c. The other managers who got the job over you may speak the language that is why they got them over you.

When I start my game in England I usually put a second nationality of spanish because I have the spanish league active too and would like to move there at some point in my career. Having a second nationality gives you the language as default.

It would be a good feature for FM if you could take language classes to help with your job application. It can be done in real life so it isn't unrealistic.

Say I want to manage in france, I can then take french lessons to booster my chances of getting the job.

Obviously other factors come in to it too like your reputation e.t.c

I always thought it would be a nice touch to be able to specify which languages you speak at the beginning of the game.

If you take a job in Spain, the language settings change automatically, likewise France and Germany. It would give those of us with language skills the chance to use them "for real", if you like, whilst also getting in-game benefits in that we would be more likely to get top jobs sooner.

I know this would not be workable for all countries, but would be a nice bit of realism for those of us sad enough to want it!

Its bad coding with the reputation, you do well but the game doesnt increase the reputation enough, for example I got promoted with QPR and then got them into Europe and the same thing happened, no top team would give me a job and theyd go for managers a lot worse than me.

IRL, a manager who did that would be well in demand.

I had the problem you had with Barcelona with Hercules from Holland. I started off unemployed and just applied for everything. All rejected me but Hercules never got back to me and three seasons in had never had a manager so I think it might be a bug.

same thing in my game!

I knew someone would be along to put up a defence.

Did they achieve that in their 1st two seasons?

Did I go loopy and put home made porn into the public domain, that might have a bit to do with no one wanting Jewell.

Two managers who have relegated teams have zero to do with someone who has taken a CCC side to Europe in his 1st 2 years of management.

I agree that the reputation does not increase fast enough BUT do you think someone would really want to take a risk on someone with 2 years management experience?

To be in demand from the top clubs you have to have consistent success, not two years of doing well.

Like I said, I do agree that reputation doesn't grow the way it should though.

The thing that puzzles me most tbh is that Man Utd were perfectly happy to offer me their job after just my first season in charge of Newcastle. Liverpool look like they're going to be on the hunt for a new manager again soon so I'll apply again for that and see what happens.

I'll update if anything happens on the Barcelona job as well.

Regards,

Liverpool-fc

NB. - Just wondered: even though I have done well with Newcastle, I have not managed yet to win a trophy with them. (Semi Finals of Champions League is the closest I've come). Could that be anything to do with it? Appreciate more thoughts, cheers guys.

I'm guessing you started with a higher rep in the first place? Ex Pro?

Yes. Guess it's looking like I'm going to have to stick with good old Newcastle for the forseeable future.

By the way, almost every time I apply for a job, I get mail saying that the fans and the board have got really angry with me and are set to sack me. The board also offer me the chance to resign. But it never comes to anything. Anyone else had the same experience?

Who heard of Wenger before he went to Arsenal? Man U hired someone from a 3rd rate league. What the hell did Avram Grant ever do?

The top clubs dont always hire the world class names.

If someone performed superbly in his 1st years of management and took an Ipswich or Barnsley into Europe in 2 years, he would get a good job if one came up.

He wouldn't get a top job though. I agree the game is badly coded for this but your example I would disagree with. They might get a job decent job but not one of the big 4. Wenger had more experience than 2 years after managing in France and Japan, Avram Grant was a friend of Abramovic and Ferguson broke the old firms dominance with Aberdeen as well as winning European Cup Winners Cup with them. Having said that it is still too hard to get a job in FM.

You may need to win a trophy, especially with a club like Newcastle, who are a big club, but havent won anything for ages (No offence to Newcastle fans!) Utd, Barcelona and Lyon are teams that constanly do well and win trophies, maybe you need to win trophies for consecutive years.

Utd never do well in my games, they always finish between 3rd and 7th! Is this just me??

As someone said, it may have something to do with the language barrier.

What did Ince do to get a job at Blackburn?

He already has a big enough reputation from playing and also done well in the lower leagues. Anyway I am not talking about Blackburn but a top side (e.g top 4). I would expect your example to possibly warrant a move to Blackburn but not a top 4 side as I said. Would he currently be in line to get a top 4 job?

No, Ince got a L2 promotion I think and got a Prem job.

Anyone who takes an average CCC side into success in Europe in a few years will get a better job, maybe not one of the big 4 but definitely one of the 2nd tier teams.

Theres no great English managers, anyone who is successful will rise to the top because theres no one else to rival him from England.

Yeah but as I said he had a reputation already without managing. Had he not being a high-profile player I am certain he would not have got that job.

Also I agree on your 2nd point but as you said a top side in another post I took it up as a top 4 side.

Zola is a risk at Chelsea. Ince choose to start at the bottom. Zola is completely different to Ince, two totally different people, with totally different management methods, Zola: Attacking, stylish football. Ince: (From what I saw at MK Dons and Macclesfield) Win anyway possible.

I would rather have Zola as the manager of my club than Ince. Dont forget though that Zola has a very experianced asst man in Steve Clarke.

Not sure if it is similar to what happened to you here but there is a bug in the game where if you are offered multiple jobs, unless you reject every job and accept 1 last, the others get automatically rejected but it doesn't register and the clubs just wait for you to say yes/no forever. The club will remain without a manager just waiting for a reply hence why a club can have no manager indefinitely.
