i hate the way they say 'you save' based on an RRP of 39.99. when was the last time a PC game cost that much?
is it still standard for that to be the RRP? or is that just what the shop/site consider the RRP

My friend has ordered from the hut a couple of times and in this instance too but he always seems to get a few days after release date. I'm gonna stick to play this time round cause I'm just too damn impatient !!

If you order online with Amazon, Game etc do you think its guarenteed that FM09 will be delivered on release date ?

I just pre-ordered my game, then realised that I have to wait 66 days until I have a copy in my hand. Now I feel sad. Thanks SI, thanks alot. You have put a right downer on my day and now I feel really miserable. Knowing I have to wait 66 days until I can own a copy is enough to drive a grown man insane.

As way of compensation, I will accept you announcing the release date for the demo, so I have something to feel good about. ;)

You might not have to wait a few days after release to get it. I ordered FM08 from this site last year at the same price and got it on release day and I only ordered it about 10 days before release so I'm guessing you will probably get it on release day. Enough talk though, got to order mine!

Woolworths 36.99
HMV 29.99
WH Smiths 31.99

Also on a side note Tesco are advertising Civilization IV: Colonization at 24.97 with a RRP of 19.99, bloody rip off merchants!

Why are so many people in a scramble to get their hands on FM09 via a pre-order?

People fall into this trap year after year, where they purchase FM on the day of release so that they can say that they received the game on the day of release (or sometimes sooner) and then they play the game, discover bugs, and more times than not they happen upon show-stopping bugs, or at least little niggles that are annoying enough to distract the player from the game. They then decide to wait till SI release a patch (or two) before even picking the game up again.

lol

Personally I'm going to wait till the final patch is released and then shell out peanuts for FM09.

I thought that my attitude would be shared by a lot of FM'ers this season, but evidently not. Especially with the introduction of the 3D match engine, which everyone knows will have initial teething problems.

Sorry my man but I have not failed to enjoy a single FM release. OK some bugs make the final cut but never show stoppers in my opinion and when the patches are released its just a case of reloading and using valuable knowledge gained to try again. Lets face it FM2009 will have all the features of FM2008 with patch 2 and a whole heap more including extended fixes so while your picking up FM2008 for 9 installing the patches this wont be a PATCH (pardon the punn) on FM2009.

Each to their own but roll on November and 17 is hardly a fortune for a top glass gameof this Genre.

Maybe because we want to enjoy the full game ASAP even if bugs do exist, we'll keep playing. An even if we want to wait until a patch is released, we already have the game sat there ready. Anyway I've pre-ordered every year and I've never regretted it

I was just about to say that Asda is the best place.

If you really impatient like me! Go to a 24 hour Asda & they sell it to you at 12-Midnight (13th November Night if you like) I've done that every year. If your lucky & ask someone stupid enough, they will get it from the back & you could be playing it the day before release date on the 13th November. I did that last year, but I know they can get a big fine if they sell it before midnight, hence best looking for someone stupid.

Me and my mate were planning to go buy it at Asda at midnight, like true FM Pr0z however just realised the games out on a Friday and I think our 24/7 Asda shuts for a period on Friday and Sats to avoid drunkards(at midnight i think). Was just wondering if we went at like 5 to 12 would they be able to sell us the game, i.e. like with drink you cant actually scan it after 10, or am I thinking SI are far too sophisticated with their anti-leak measures and if its instore you can buy it anyway?

Kain
27-10-2008, 23:12
I would imagine they would be able to sell it to you on the Thursday, but only if the store itself sells the games early. There won't be any measures preventing the game from being scanned, that's almost entirely restricted to products needing a license and/or ID. Check with the store itself, that's what I'll be doing with mine (although mine doesn't close at any point except weekends).

I have just checked on Tesco.com and it is showing as 37.99 on mine aswell! Thehut.com is very cheap at 22.93 (I think) using the promotional code :D.

Yeah I know that there are pre-order sites that will be cheaper but I want to get it at Midnight and play all night/day friday!

Lol okay mate. The only thing you have to consider is that if you pre-order it there is a chance that you will get it on Thursday and therefore you will get an extra day to play the game, but this isn't guaranteed.

At the time FM08 came out there was a postal strike and therefore many people got their copy a bit late

I've used thehut for a couple other pre-orders (Fable II, Fifa 09) and received them on release day. I've also had an email last week saying they will ship FM09 out in time for me to get it on the 14th. Add to that the fact I've ordered it for 17.93 and you can't fault them

MSCCG

Yes you should receive it on the day of release, or like in past years a couple of days before

I hope that's what happens this year! I wonder if they have to send it extra early because I live overseas so if the postage goes smoothly I get it earlier. What a plan! Mwahahahahahahaha?

I'm sure when people obtain the Football Manager mouses it shall appear on eBay for a price of a fiver (including delivery charge) so, all-in-all buying from the store that sells the game for 25 and buying the mouse for a fiver is basically the same as purchasing the game from HMV.

I agree and as they say... "Only fools rush in".
Take a look at FM's history... anyone remember what FM08 was like before the SECOND patch?
The wise men would say buying the game after one or two patches will give you a better game and more than likely for a better price.

Forgot what it is like to spend weeks building a tactic only to have to start from scratch after the patch, then ditto for the next one.

A wise man or a fool? The choice is yours - if it's the former than enjoy the bugs!

Last year I pre ordered FM and didn't get the game on the day of release so I don't risk it anymore I just buy the game when its out in the shop. It came out a day early last year too and I didn't have anything in the post so because I am so sad and couldn't wait to play it, I went to the shop and brought it and sent the pre order back for refund.

Just for info - if you pre-order off play.com you can get a personilzed football manager game cover with your name on it. Seems pretty cool.

So you expected most FM players to not play the game upon its release... but to wait until the final patch before buying it, correct?

Just how, then, would you expect people to find the bugs to be fixed in these patches???

Not that this is you (of course), but two of my best friends are Scottish and they are pretty miserly with their cash... ;)

Surely this is a joke ?

Game, Play & Amazon all claim the RRP for FM2009 is 39.99 !!!!!

I know you can then order it for around 29, but surely it will not be 39.99 in the stores.

Its very unlikely any shop would sell it for the maximum that they're allowed to. If you look around I'm sure you'll be able to find a good price. I managed to get FIFA 09 the weekend it was released for 28 at Asda which I was quite chuffed with.

Relax, you'll always get it 5 - 10 cheaper than RRP even in the specialist game stores - perhaps less in supermarkets and definitely less online.

It's so later they can discount it to 29.99 or 27.99 and claim 25% off especially for YOU during the credit crunch. It makes out like they care.

Products have to be on sale for a certain amount of time - 28 days, I think - before you can pretend to offer a discount to your customers.

The games companies give out a reccomended retail price. This would be what they recommended the game is sold for. If you look on such sites as play, it will say "saving x amount" this is taken from the recommended retail.

It tends to range between 34.99 and 39.99 although most companies have it on about 5 - 10 cheaper.

39.99 = RRP - 29.99 = actual price.

I just think that to try and con people into thinking "Wow, what a discount!" these places have ramped up the "so-called" RRP to a level that is plainly ridiculous for a PC game. In order to make them pay what is usually around the full price.!!

If you don't get a thread, then try reading it first ;)

Average can be any of them, in this case mode (most frequent value) would fit it quite well.

The Department of Business Enterprise & Regulatory Reform (DEBRR) has issued the Pricing Practices Guide (www.berr.gov.uk). In it, it states that it is acceptable for marketers to quote Recommended Retail Prices (RRPs) if they are genuine and not significantly different from the price at which the product might be sold. The CAP Code mirrors that requirement and Clause 15.5 states “A recommended retail price (RRP), or similar, used as a basis of comparison should be genuine; it should not differ significantly from the price at which the product is generally sold.”

In 2006, the General Media Panel was asked to define the test of what constituted “generally sold”. Although it did not specifically define the test, the Panel considered that the product and sector could play a vital part in reaching a conclusion. It was feasible that large, seldom-bought items such as furniture might be considered “generally sold” if available through a relatively small number of nationwide stores, for example IKEA. In 2006, the ASA accepted that sales in two outlets for a pair of binoculars and ten outlets for hearing aids was adequate to justify that the products were “generally sold” (Express Newspapers plc and BVG-Airflo Group plc, 8 November 2006, and Ultravox Holdings Ltd, 23 August 2006). Marketers should bear in mind that the same number of sales outlets would almost certainly not be enough for other, more frequently-bought products.

The ASA might regard products that are available online as satisfying the “generally sold” principle but the mere inclusion of a product on a seller’s website is not necessarily enough. The ASA has upheld complaints about marketers who have claimed to have offered for sale products that no one has bought (Woods Supplements, 21 June 2007).

In 2008, the ASA ruled that an advertiser that was advertising DVDs before they were on general release should not use RRPs because it could not show the product was generally sold at that price. The use of RRPs for products not yet launched or available only for order is therefore likely to be considered notional and incapable of substantiation until a retail market is established (Play Ltd, 9 April 2008).

Even if they can provide documentary evidence that the quoted RRP was recommended by the manufacturer, marketers should be aware that the ASA has nevertheless upheld complaints because it has not been convinced that the RRP was the price at which the product was sold (Jessop Group Ltd, 14 June 2006). Marketers should avoid stating an “RRP” if the product is sold only by them.

The definition of what constitutes a significantly different price does not seem to have been tested but an adjudication in 2006 considered whether a selling price of 40 satisfied the use of an RRP of 49.95. The ASA concluded that the claim was misleading (Straight plc t/a Blackwall, 1 November 2006).

In 2001, the ASA upheld a complaint about a bedroom furniture retailer that claimed to offer goods at a significant discount. A footnote explained that the offer was based on the list price. Because the advertiser was unable to show that the ''list price'' was anything other than a notional price at which furniture was rarely, if ever, sold, the ASA upheld the complaint (Sharps Bedrooms, 28 March 2001). A similar decision in 2007 suggests that the ASA would continue to apply that logic (Scotford Ltd, t/a Protex Systems, 4 July 2007).

Marketers should remember that prices, whether recommended retail prices or not, should be genuine and not misleading (Advanced Direct Information Services Ltd, 5 May 2004). Marketers should refer to the DTI’s Guidance for Traders on Price Indications.
