4 gb in Xp an Vista

Recommended Posts

  • 3 months later...

it is just displayed wrong in the BIOS, you still have 4gb of memory it just shows up as 3gb.

I have heard that there are problems with 4gb in Xp and Vista on 32 bits. If you put 4 gb in there the OS wont recognize it, it wil show 3gb. Is there a solution to fix this?

32 bit operating systems (XP or Vista) can only run a maximum of 3gb of RAM, this is why it will now show up in windows.

I have Vista and a 64bit operating system so my 4gb can work. The max for 64bit systems is 8gb.

Hope that helps

The sollution is to get a 64 bit version of windows.

Yes, get a 64 bit operating system to take advantage of your processor capabilities and it will use all of your 4gb. However don't expect too much difference as I doubt that FM2008 will use much more than 1 gig of RAM, so it will only be of any use when multi-tasking

8gb is the max for Vista Home Basic. Ultimate can handle up to 128gb. Physically a 64bit processor can talk to 16.8 million Terabytes

So if get this!! I install the 64 bits vista on mu laptop and it will run my 4gb. So fm will also run good on a 64 bits OS.

Yes, but if it is only for Fm, don't bother upgrading as FM won't use anywhere near 4GB RAM.

Thats not true- 32-bit OS' can ADDRESS 4GB, but this includes memory addresses taken by things such as graphics cards.

For example if your graphics card is 512MB then the 32-bit OS will address the full 4GB but only give 4GB minus 512MB to the OS and your applications.

I have now installed XP and have enabled PAE, I have 4gb in my laptop. XP says 3gb. So I don't think that PAE works?

PAE is working but because your devices such as GPUs etc need memory space then this will be deducted from the 4GB.

If you want your OS to allow the entire 4GB to be available to apps then you should use a 64-bit OS.

Download Window's Vista SP1, it will then show the correct amount of Ram.

I just finished building a new computer and I also have 4GB of ram but only 3 would show up in Windows. After installing SP1 it shows correctly now

I'm using the 32bit version of Vista btw.
