The Apprentice: Football Manager Edition

*Winner: Best Sign-Up Idea FM08 - The CSE Community*

Fabio Capello: This is a job interview from hell. I’ve been in football for 40 years. Your prize is working with me.
From across the country, 20 football managers of tomorrow have come to the Premier League.
Fabio Capello: Don’t start telling me that you’re just like me, because no one’s like me. I’m unique.
They’re here to compete for a job with a six-figure salary, working for England’s most Italian boss.
Fabio Capello: I think this is outrageous. You haven’t got a bloody clue. Not a bloody clue.
Famously hard to please, Fabio Capello has won 9 domestic titles and one Champions League. Now, for the first time, he’s on the search for an apprentice.
Fabio Capello: It’s up to you. You open your bloody mouth or I’ll fire the whole bloody five of you if I have to. I don’t give a sheep.
To land their dream job, the candidates will have to play…and win against each other. But there’s just one job.
Fabio Capello: You’re fired. You’re fired. This was a total disaster; you’re fired.

Welcome, candidates, to The Apprentice: Football Manager Edition. All 20 of you will be competing against each other for one job with England manager Fabio Capello. Week by week, you complete tasks, and week by week, Fabio Capello says, “You’re fired.”

First, the candidates are given clubs. Each candidate got the opportunity to set their own Current Ability and Potential Ability, and it is their selfishness here that has given them worst clubs. Those who have given themselves lower CA and PA get a better club to compete for the one job. This system is based on the club’s predicted position. The clubs are as follows:

Username Manager Name Club
Frazza Pee Gold Member West Ham
mikey twigge Mikey Twigge Derby
Ridleys James Ridley Bolton

Using a seeding system based on predicted positions, the candidates have been separated into two teams, The Reds and The Blues.

The Schedule

Every Tuesday I post a task, and I post its report on the Wednesday. The next couple of days are then used to determine who is fired ready for the next task, which is posted on Friday. The report for that task is posted on Saturday, and another candidate is fired before the next task commences on the next Tuesday. At the end of 15 tasks we will have our new apprentice. After the task report is completed, I will ask the project manager of the losing team to call in two (or more) clubs from their team to the board room. Then, via email, the three forum users tell me why they shouldn’t get fired. Once all arguments are posted, the other team members get the opportunity to vote for which team mate they want to see fired by emailing me. The result is announced and one or more of the team members are sent packing.

The Tasks

Each week the teams are set a task. Although this is described in real life terms, it equates to a Football Manager objective. I then simulate the task taking place on Football Manager 2008, and post the results in a report. The scores of each team member for that task are added together to get a team score which determines the winning team. From the losing team, one person gets fired.

The Project Managers

Each week there will be a different team member assigned as Project Manager. This is drawn using a random number system. The Project Manager has to enter the boardroom along with two teammates. If there are no more Project Managers available for a team, the draw will be redone. The Project Managers will be announced alongside the task.

Disclaimer:

As this is the first series, I cannot guarantee there will not be bumps along the way. In fact, I am certain there will be issues. I’ll try to minimise these but with the clubs being unequal tension is always likely to arise. Remember it is just a game and to have fun. You can always participate again next series when I can be clearer on what should be done setting up the sign-up.

Notes:

The game is being played on an 8.0.2 large database, which has been edited only to put the 20 candidates in. The English Premier Division is the only league loaded, and no additional nations are selected.
All managers were set to be born in 1977 but for some unknown reason the game changes their date of birth on startup. I will leave it as it is unless there is a major outcry.
To email me, go to the Contact Info pane of my Profile and click ‘Send a message via email to canvey!!’.
If your manager is fired in the game, you can continue the sign-up, but if your team loses you automatically enter the boardroom.
All users are very much welcome to post in this thread, not just those competing in the sign-up.
If you are going to be away it helps me if you tell me in advance so I know why you’re not contributing to the thread. If you do not submit your defence argument none shall be provided for you and if you don’t vote then you miss your opportunity to get someone fired. Only the members of the losing team have to vote for who they want fired.

Set on media predictions.

canvey!!
14-07-2008, 21:28
West Ham are predicted 15th, Reading are predicted 13th. Bear in mind 2006-07, where Reading qualified for the Intertoto, but West Ham narrowly avoided relegation.

i wonder who the team is who sacked their manager straight away?

canvey!!
14-07-2008, 21:32
It wasn't straight away, it must have been about Christmas time or later. The CA/PA ranking system I'm using should make it fairer. The top teams have better squads and higher expectations but worse managers. The bottom teams have worse squads but lower expectations and better managers.

Mistryman

The Apprentice: Football Manager Edition
Task 1

Fabio Capello has called the candidates to Portobello Road Market, London.

Fabio Capello: Today’s task sees you buying and selling. You need to be able to buy low, and to sell high. You’ve got to buy wholesale here at the market and sell on for a profit. The team that comes back to me with the most amount of money wins. From the losing team, one of you’s gonna get fired.

Ridleys, you’re going to be the Project Manager for the Reds (Bolton), and uusinjsh for the Blues (Blackburn).

~

The Objective: Make a profit from Summer transfers
The Deadline: August 10th, before the first league game
Notes: The values I will be counting are those in the club’s Transfers > History section

The results report will be posted on Friday.

Mistryman
15-07-2008, 11:04

go, BLUE TEAM!

uusinjsh
15-07-2008, 11:22
so, we need to make profit, yes? if a.e. arsenal will buy mutu for 24mil and won't sell anyone it will be -24mil for their team already?

canvey!!
15-07-2008, 11:23
Mistryman, the profit is the team's income from selling players subtract the team's expenditure on buying players.

uusinjsh, yes, although the entire team's profit is used to decide who wins the task.

JoseRR
15-07-2008, 11:27
I guess it'll be the net profit/loss taken from all summer deals = money from sold players - money spent

Mikel LUFC

15-07-2008, 12:10

uusinjsh
15-07-2008, 12:15
hmm, yes, all these 'pandev, mutu to arsenal; kuzmanovic, diego to chelsea' won't be good for their teams. but the big buyers - chelsea and arsenal will be in opposite teams so it will be like a competition ''who will buy the less players who are aka 'always transferred to england' :D

hope you understood me :)

Once I tried to do it with Tottenham. There were no problems with Berbatov, King, Robinson etc. but with backup lads it wasn't so easy (with Boateng, Ghaly, Tainio), very few teams wanted them even for 0 euros. I earned ~120mil for this (Berbatov - 30mil, King - 25mil, Robinson 20mil, the rest - for peanuts)

Yes, the beauty of it is that the AI doesn't know the tasks were being set. As this task only lasts until August 10th, real people would make any sales before August 10th and any purchases after August 10th when they don't detract from the score. But as it is the AI, you'll get a fairer game. It also allows me to use the staggered CA/PA system, because people don't really have a CA/PA.

Tomaldinho
15-07-2008, 18:18
This looks fb. Boro are short of decent players so I'm kind of hoping we don't flog the best ones because future challenges will be a shambles without them.

I think Cattermole is rated at around £20million sometimes though so that wouldn't be a bad piece of business.

It might be nice if the person who gets fired posts here a small post-game statement, a la the taxi journey.
Most of the clubs already have the players they need because it's an 8.0.2 edited database, so transfer activity should be less.
I don't want to post too much as I've already simmed the task and written the report - given the speed I now know I can do it we might be able to move the sign-up along a bit faster.

The Apprentice: Football Manager Edition
Task 1

Both teams got off to a good start, expressing their interest in a number of antiques in the market. From the Blues, Kim Jung Fine at Aston Villa immediately took the initiative, expressing his interest in a certain Nicky Shorey from Reading. Although fellow-Blues Reading boss Robert Boyle launched a scathing attack on Kim Jung Fine, he surely knew that if such a transfer happened, the team would not make any loss.

The Reds were ambitious from the start: beginning with Manchester United. Seeing a Sergio Agüero tucked away in the corner of an Atletico Madrid stall, Red Devils boss The Ideal Apprentice expressed his keen interest. There was a problem, alongside Agüero came a £25,500,000 price tag. Also for the Reds, Vincent Kompany was a target, this time of Stefan James’ Manchester City.

It seemed that early on Kim Jung Fine would be bossing the Blues, making his and their second declaration of interest, this time in the £3,100,000-rated Mario Santana from Fiorentina. The Reds started getting rid of players quickly, with Fulham and Tottenham sending out reserves on loan to Bradford and Doncaster respectively, but loans don’t count, and there was no fee attached to them anyway.

By Wednesday 18th July, the chequebooks were well and truly being opened. Chelsea started shipping out players to get the Blues off to the better start, selling 34-year-old Claude Makélélé to Sevilla for £750,000. West Ham boss Gold Member was still looking to bring players in, targeting Schalke’s Levan Kobiashvili. Fulham and Tottenham, who had loaned out players days earlier, were now expressing interest in them, JJ Fernie in Per Ciljan Skjelbred from Rosenborg, and Browser Two in Italian Riccardo Montolivo.

But it was Middlesbrough who first paid out transfer royalties, as Tomaldinho paid £2,600,000 for the services of Villareal’s Josemi. That left the blues £750,000 up, whereas the Reds were already sent into an early deficit, with Josemi’s tag of £2.6M being all that had changed hands. However, with Arsenal offering contracts to two players worth £35.25M, that could all change very quickly.

Birmingham soon wanted in on the spending action for the Blues, chasing Chivas striker Omar Bravo, who had a £1.6M price tag attached. George Robson at Sunderland saw a Guy Demel sitting on a Hamburger SV stall that was in the market’s corner. However, it was Newcastle that were the next to splash cash, wiping out a huge chunk of Chelsea’s income for the team by spending £575,000 on Derek Boateng from Beitar Jerusalem.

But Bolton sought to put the Reds further behind with a £1.4M incoming transfer of Brazilian Mota. Although Sunderland saw a Sergey Ignashevich that George Robson liked, it was Middlesbrough who then opened the purse again for the Reds, paying £1.9M for Mexican Oswaldo Sánchez on top of the £2.6M they paid for Josemi. Manchester City got Vincent Kompany, who Stefan James had been chasing, for £9.5M, and he also secured Blackburn’s David Bentley for £11.75M, giving the Reds a major disadvantage and the Blues the advantage.

But that was surely ruined when Gonzalo Gonzalez paid £35.25M combined for Maxi Rodríguez and Sébastien Frey. However, the Blues still preserved a narrow lead as the competition got fiercer.

By the time August rolled around, West Ham had secured the services of Luka Modric for £8.5M, and Derby and manager Mikey Twigge those of Ívar Ingimarsson for £2.1M. However, as Derby and Reading are on the same team, no net loss was scored. Wigan spent £200k on Shane Supple from Ipswich, Reading £45k on Rocco Quinn from Celtic, and Kim Jung Fine at Aston Villa £650k on Arkadiusz Glowacki from Wisla.

Both teams rushed to buy the best possible stock before the deadline. However, only those on the Blues were making an effort to sell. If Arsenal hadn’t been given the team wallet, they may have even been breaking even. With time ticking away, Tottenham signed Jefferson Farfán for £6.5M, and Everton made their first move, adding to the expenditure of the Blues with an £8.75M transfer of Vagner Love from CSKA Moscow. Also for the Blues, Reading, Derby and Newcastle spent a further £7.9M between them.

Manchester United wanted to create the ultimate humiliation. With the Reds in the lead, they also defeated Chelsea, where Mistryman was doing his best to make a profit for his team by not spending anything, 2-1 in the Community Shield. Although Brian Greene of Newcastle tried to chase Michael Carrick, which would send the Reds further ahead, the deadline came and the teams had to make it to the boardroom. Fabio Capello was there, ready to cast a gloomy eye over their finances.

Fabio Capello: So, let’s look at your finances. Italo, how did the Reds do?
Italo Galbiati: Well, the Reds spent £34,217,000 on players. And they raised £94,000, which gives them a total loss of £34,123,000.
Fabio Capello: A loss. Did you not understand the point of this task? Franco, tell me about the Blues.
Franco Baldini: Well, the Blues sold £16,100,000 worth of players. But, they spent £63,770,000, giving them a total loss of £47,670,000.
Fabio Capello: Well, Reds, I don’t know how you did it, seeing as only Bolton and Man City actually made an effort to make any sales, but you won. You’re off to the London Eye where you’ll get to see the whole of London while having a cocktail party at the top. Blues, go away and think about what has happened, and when you come back, one of you’s gonna get fired.

Fabio Capello: So, uusinjsh, who are you bringing back with you into the boardroom?

Depends on the arguments made, they spent a lot, but those are some quality players that will bode well for future rounds.

Paul, I think it would be easier if you were to post your post-firing thoughts directly here. The reason I want the arguments emailed to me is because I don't want anyone to have the advantage by being able to counter-argue to the other two (whereas the 1st person can't counter-argue at all). Obviously, though, don't post it until someone has been fired.

The Apprentice: Football Manager Edition
The Boardroom

The three Blues enter the boardroom, Project Manager uusinjsh at Blackburn, Mikel LUFC at Arsenal, and radicell at Everton. They take their seats.
Fabio Capello: What couldn’t you understand about this task? You went out, and you lost me money! I should fire both of you. Tell me, tell me Gonzalo, why shouldn’t I fire you?
Mikel LUFC:Right, Mr.Capello I am totally aware of the fact that I spent the most money but I did it with the other challenges that lay ahead in mind. The keepers I had were not good enough for one of the better teams in the league so a new one was a must. Also the flair and skill that Maxi provides is what this team needs.

Radicell bought a big target man, sound familiar? Yes an identical player to Yakubu yet he still bought him. He should have at least sold Yakubu if he bought Wagner Love, they will not co-exist, if he stays of course, and granted uusinjsh made a tidy profit but he sold his best player and showed a distinct lack of ambition. Besides, radicell hasn’t visited this thread or posted in it at all.
So ask yourself Mr.Capello who would you like working for you? Someone who makes poor decisions? Or maybe someone with no ambition? Or someone who takes a risk and puts his balls on the line to get the long term job done? That is all Mr.Capello

Fabio Capello: Tell me, Rick, why shouldn’t I fire you?
radicell: Well, I don’t really know what to say…
Fabio Capello: And Mr Vancans, why should you stay here for the next task?
uusinjsh: My main argument is clear, short and obvious - my team actually made the biggest profit (more than 13mil) and was one of only two teams to earn anything during this task.
Fabio Capello: Right then, one of you’s got to go. Gonzalo, you spent so much and didn’t provide, Rick, it doesn’t seem like you are into this at all, and Ints, you lost control of your team, simple as. …

The tension builds…

Who gets fired? It’s up to you. Mistryman, mikey twigge, Mikel LUFC, spartans5, radicell, Frazza Pee, uusinjsh, Robert_296, weeeman27bob and Living_Legend, you have until midnight tonight to vote for who you want fired. Those up for the vote are uusinjsh, Mikel LUFC and radicell.

i'm wondering, what could be the next task about? scoring with someone in particular position? winning? contracts? youngster development? tactics?

Some of those ideas are ones the AI would rarely do, so we'd have very low scores on those. I already have all of the tasks chosen, though.

Mikel LUFC: Actually, when I was writing the report, I thought "Why don't I just make the decision, it's obvious Mikel LUFC is going to go!" :)

The Apprentice: Football Manager Edition
Task 2

Fabio Capello calls the candidates to St. Pancras International, the train station.

Fabio Capello: The people that use this train station to commute to work have to get up early. They are very often tired. Every morning, they buy themselves a cup of coffee to perk themselves up. It’s your job to sell coffee to people like these. The team with the least sales at the end of three days loses, and from that team, one of you is going to get fired.

barry the second will be leading the Red team (Porstmouth), and it’ll be weeeman27bob who’ll be taking the helm for the Blues (Aston Villa).

~

The Objective: Reach as high a table position as possible
The Deadline: 3 games

The results will be posted on Saturday.

Yes. Now, some teams will only play 2 games, those being Liverpool, Manchester United, Reading, Manchester City, Blackburn and Arsenal. I could either leave the table with that being the case, or give each of those teams 1 bonus point.

Tomaldinho
18-07-2008, 17:56
Of those 6 teams, three are on the Reds and three on the Blues so giving them zero or one point each won't make any difference really.

canvey!!
18-07-2008, 17:59
Yeah, I'd say you're right. I'll leave the table is it is then, only ask that people take the games in hand into account when deciding who to take into the boardroom, who gets fired, etc.

3 teams from each - blue and red team...

Tomaldinho
18-07-2008, 18:20
If the league table is posted then I'm sure people will be able to see who has performed badly in relation to the number of games anyway. Will the fixtures/scorelines also be posted to help us decide? For instance if Derby have played the top 3 clubs they will surely be let off for getting whooped?

The league table screenshot will be posted and all matches will be detailed in the report.

The Apprentice: Football Manager Edition
Task 2

Both teams were eager to get out there and play, and it was Middlesbrough and Tomaldinho who took pole position, defeating their Reds teammates Tottenham 3-0. Arsenal also won convincingly, as manager Gonzalo Gonzalez masterminded a 3-1 victory over fellow Blues, Brian Greene’s Newcastle, but this was not enough to put them first, having to settle for second behind the team who had beaten Browser Two.

At Villa Park, Kim Jung Fine’s team was defeated narrowly 2-3 by a Peter Crouch brace. Liverpool took third place, with Villa taking 14th. Blackburn took the fourth place, despite Ints Vancans having sold David Bentley. They won 2-1 over Billy Hagrues’ Birmingham. The £11.75M transfer didn’t score, however, as Manchester City sneaked in a last-minute equaliser in a 2-2 draw at home to Reading. This left the Sky Blues 9th and Robert Boyle’s team 11th, although both were actually level with Portsmouth, who had drawn 2-2 away to Everton.

Derby also drew, equalising straight away as Andriy Shevchenko scored a penalty. Bolton and Fulham recorded 2-1 wins, over Wigan and Sunderland respectively, and the famed team from Manchester, managed by The Ideal Apprentice, scraped past West Ham with a single Wayne Rooney goal.

By the end of the day, Middlesbrough, Arsenal, Liverpool and Blackburn occupied the top four spaces, with the relegation zone having Tottenham, Newcastle, and Gold Member’s West Ham sitting in it.

Eager to sell more coffee, Reds George Robson, Browser Two, James Ridley and Dr Pepper sneaked off to complete more transactions. Unfortunately for them, two Blue team members had similar ideas, Gold Member of West Ham and Mikey Twigge of Derby. What followed was a mighty clash for coffee customers, out of which no-one seemed to profit. Although Bolton won 3-0 over Robson’s Sunderland, these two teams were now at the extremities of the table, and this may not have been the best business decision. Both the Reds and the Blues recorded 2-1 victories which wiped out the others’, Tottenham taking 9th place over West Ham, and Pepper’s Wigan ceded to Derby, who leaped from 13th to 2nd.

Both sides had a team or two essentially distracted, and for good reason. Arsenal beat Slavia Prague 4-0 in the Champions League qualifying, Maxi Rodríguez getting his first goal for them, and Liverpool took a 1-1 draw from Switzerland with a match against Zürich. Blackburn beat Häcken of Sweden 5-0 but while these teams were competing in mere sideshows, seven people were trying to sell coffee.

For the Blues, Birmingham’s attempts to sell sweet java were futile, as they lost 2-0 to ex-teammate Everton. Chelsea, Newcastle and Aston Villa were the other teams selling for the Blues, and Mistryman’s side beat last week’s sales table toppers Middlesbrough two goals to one, while Newcastle would lose 1-2 to Fulham, and Villa overpowered King Tikki-Man’s Portsmouth 2-0.

While some teams had been pre-occupied with the rest of the World, those who had knuckled down to get more sales were topping the tables. Bolton and JJ Fernie’s Fulham were the only two teams with 6 sales, and the redundant Everton sat 3rd, ahead of Mistryman’s Chelsea. Despite all three having spent more time on trying to close more deals, Newcastle, Birmingham and Sunderland occupied the drop zone, with Dr Pepper’s Wigan and Gold Member’s West Ham in the same predicament without a sale despite two pitches.

With the deadline approaching, all 19 candidates took to the streets with their coffee. Gonzalo Gonzalez won in the race between him and Robaldinho, his Arsenal selling 3 cups to Liverpool’s 1. However, due to them being distracted by entering into Europe, Fulham were allowed to take top spot after drawing 2-2 with Robert Boyle’s Reading, who sat in 17th, just outside of the relegation zone. The clock ticked down, with George Robson of Sunderland and Mikey Twigge of Derby fighting over one customer, a teacher from Elephant & Castle. Twigge looked on in horror as the Black Cats won the sale for the 1-0 victory over them.

Four teams stuttered to 1-1 draws, Birmingham vs. Porstmouth and Blackburn vs. Tottenham. Bolton held onto 4th place, despite losing 1-2 to Brian Greene’s Newcastle, and Manchester United took 5th on two games, having defeated the redundant Everton 2-0 at Goodison.

Middlesbrough slotted into third place on the sales rankings, with them selling two cups to 0 of fellow Reds Wigan. Everyone wrote off Gold Member’s West Ham, who were without a sale in two, when they faced Mistryman’s Chelsea, but they sold two cups more than the Pensioners, who only sold one, and the Hammers clenched a consolidatory 12th spot. But while Kim Jung Fine desperately tried to requisition sales, the competitor for his street, Manchester City, stole away with four cups of coffee going to punters with deep pockets. This put Stefan James into 6th spot, but he had only had two opportunities to make sales, which he did fairly convincingly.

The candidates shuffled back to the boardroom with Dr Pepper, Billy Hagrues and King Tikki-Man on the bottom of the pile, and JJ Fernie sitting triumphantly on the top.

Fabio Capello: So, teams, let’s take a look at how many coffees you each sold. Italo, the Reds?
Italo Galbiati: The Reds sold a total of 98 cups of coffee.
Fabio Capello: And Franco, what about the Blues?
Franco Baldini: They sold 73 cups of coffee.
Fabio Capello: Well, Reds, you have won again. You’re all going to Bromley Springs, a health spa where you’re all going to get pampered. Blues, go outside, I’ll call you back and one of you’s gonna get fired.

People also ought to take into account the abilities of the teams - a team like Man Utd would be punished more harshly for coming 17th than for example Derby.
