Laptop advice

Recommended Posts

I know there is like 10 threads a week on this but, I need new laptop advice!

I know a bit about computers but my problem comes when it is actually finding a good deal for one.

I would like a good processor (i5 or above), external graphics card, at least 4gb RAM and preferably with a Solid state drive.

Is this realistic within a £500 budget and where would be the best place to find a good price? I'm never sure. No preference on brand, just something that won't break after a few months!

Any help appreciated :)

It seems to me you demand a lot for 500 pounds. Particularly with a SSD.

Hmmm I was fearing I would hear that.

I may just buy a standard laptop and replace the hard drive myself, most likely with This

The hybrid SSD will only help the performance of FM12 if you play FM12 on a regular basis so that the SSD moves the relevant files into the 8GB SSD section. You will only notice an increase in loading and saving times and not in general gameplay speed. The SSD part will speed up the boot speed of the computer somewhat.

Personally, after using an SSD (as an OS drive) for the last 18 months the speed of a standard HDD is more than a tad frustrating.

I would be very surprised if you manage to get a laptop with dedicated graphics and a SSD for £500.

Thanks for the feedback guys, had a chat with some tech lovers at work today and realised how unrealistic my budget is, so I am stretching to £800 max, but I would rather keep it under £600 unless the extra money will provide a real performance boost.

That graphics card seems to be a little low Welsh, but other than that it seems all good, Acer is definitely a manufacturer I am looking at.

I came acrossthis which could very well do the job, although the processor isn't all that great...

I also checked out one of the 'build you own' sites, and managed to get that down to This, this was of course after I chose the most expensive things and was left in shock at the price.

PCSpecialist's Genesis IV. Self-configurable. Performance pr. £ is top class. With a i5-3210M or i7-3610QM, 1920x1080 screen, 8 GB RAM, 120 or 180 GB Intel SSD + additional regular hard disk, and the Nvidia GT 630M. There you have quite a powerful laptop computer, and one that you can play many games on with good results. And within your new £800 budget.

Choose the Optimus III model with Nvidia GT 650M if you want something that can play most games at least adequately. It is my favourite 15 inch laptop of it's class at the moment. It is a Clevo build - I have one of those myself, and can recommend it highly.

Clevo = a Taiwanese manufacturer of laptops that delivers barebone chassis (chassis, motherboard, power and cooling system) laptops to vendors all over the world. These then equips them with many of the internals (as the customer chooses), and often puts their own brand name and logos on them. Known in the US as Sager, primarily; in the UK best known as the now defunkt Kobalt computers.

The Genesis IV is not a Clevo build, I think - probably a Compal or MSI barebone.

Other UK vendors of Clevo builds: www.pwnpcs.co.uk, www.novatech.co.uk Specially Pwn PCs must be mentioned as a dedicated and knowledgable bunch of guys for custom builds. You can find the Optimus III there as Sager NP6165/Clevo W150ERM.

the main thing for FM is RAM, 6-8 GB should do for most things regarding FM

It's a data processing game - the processor is probably the most important thing.

RAM is only good for multi-tasking, and having lots of programs running, like itunes, steam, fm, internet, playing videos, checking email etc. all running at the same time.

4GB of RAM is plenty. 6GB is very good. 8GB RAM is overkill for FM.

I have got 8GB Ram but only because I do a lot of photo editing. If I was doing video editing I'd be looking at something along the lines of 12-16gb RAM.
