Players overperform or underperform depending on what you said to them in the pre-match talk, so the goal is a result of them being motivated, stressed or complacent. I suppose the insane overhaul of the manager reputation system in 12.1 and 12.2 has sort of limited that situation because in most cases players don't pay attention to what you say.
