Too Many Patterns Evolve?

Saying a player WILL score loads after getting one means he won't score for ages

Winning about 5 games in a row and losing to a shocking team in the league after battering them

Conceding in the last 5 mins of games, being interviewed about it and it still manages to occur?

Struggling to beat shocking teams but NEVER causing upsets

Saying you expect a win usually means you won't

9/10 paying over the odds for players apart from the odd player e.g. Enyeama, Tshabalala in recent years BUT...

... Hardly ever getting a big bid for one of yours to the same extent

Lack of consistency from certain players; Generally when a player plays crap they won't turn form around, even with encouragement

Players that start the game poor generally continue that way unless they get a move

Press conferences about goals before half-time ALWAYS lead to your next couple of games having them

Battering opposition but not taking chances ALWAYS leads to a 1 goal defeat undeservedly

I could go on, but I can't even be bothered with FM anymore. I've played it too much and things like the above take the fun out of the game. Rant over, goodbye FM

yes it is a management simulation, but it should be possible to win any game.... it isn't

and scoring from 1 free kick a season, that is crippling when you get fouled when attacking.

it have noticed when it says x goalkeeper hasn't conceded for x ammount of minutes in the hundreds... they will.

What games are "impossible" to win?

I generally lead the league in converted direct and indirect free kicks. How? By knowing how to pick a good set piece taker and by setting up good routines.

Bias confirmation. Teams concede goals. It is unusual for the team not to concede for so long, which is why you see the message. However, it is usual to concede. Hence, the message will regularly be followed by your team conceding.

The amount of goals scored from free kicks are perhaps low, but this article tells you that a direct free kick goal is a rare event. http://www.soccerbythenumbers.com/2011/05/uselessness-of-free-kicks-in-premier.html

Perhaps the likes of Roberto Carlos and David Beckham is becoming rarer these days, or perhaps the ball has become more difficult to curl around the wall?

all matches are winnable EVENTUALLY but some are harder then others.

i have 5 or 6 formations available to me. i chaned one in game because it wasnt working, that one started working. next game against the same team i use the formation that worked... it didn't, that is what i am talking about, the game seems to just "decide" what will happen regardless of my formation. that feels like it is preset rather through acctually trying to get a result.

it isnt helped by crashes either. just worked 3-3 draw changing formation and substitutions.. crash .><

the free kick goals are not the issue, 1 free kick a season in the premier league with decent players is not balanced.

as for free kicks, i score loads when it is indirect. but direct free kicks, either are tame and saved when on target or fly over. i have used differant players same result.

and go win every game in a season, you cant. but it is the same situation over and over again, possesion away from home at big clubs is 9/10 so stupidly low, and you make hardly any chances. i exepct away at the top clubs to be hard. but i do expect SOMETHING to win me the game, not 4 differant formations failing.

Yes, because changing formations is exactly what wins and loses football matches in the real world, isn't it. If you tried to think through your own logic and stopped trying to buy wins through finding a formation that tricks the AI, you might not suffer the problems you continually post about.

It might also help to accept the dictum 'all teams lose sometimes' and take the loss on the chin.

Although it is, of course, possible for any game to crash, FM is usually pretty stable. If you are getting constant crashes, I suggest you check your OS installation, as it might be causing the instability.

But if it isn't happening to others, then it must be an issue all of your own creation. Rather than moaning, try and work out a solution.

it crashes on longer saves rather then shorter ones.

there are many threads on the issue of the free kicks.

and a differant fomration and tactics are what wins games, even in real life, arsenal have been weak to counter attacking for years, so setting up to do that should work for example. but i am not talking of a slight change of fomration, i am talking about going from 4-2-2-2 fluid attack to 4-5-1 control, and still struggling, because midfielders just stand like statues when looking for a pass, when they should be just knocking it about and working an opening. i do expect some sort of differance in how players act, and the game statics. i expect less shots and more possesion with the 4-5-1 and more shots with my 4-2-2-2. and yet i can use either and get the same effect, dithering players passing as if they playing in glue, losing possesion.

It would be worth pursuing this in the bugs forum if you haven't already. It is very possibly a system issue that you can fix.

None of which negates the fact that my team scores an acceptable amount of direct free kicks during a season. My set piece specialist has scored two in the opening four games of the new season.

If you can't see the problem with that paragraph, then I'm at a loss.

If you call a team meeting and say: "We've been playing well lately", you will go on a ten game losing streak.

If you hold a press conference for your new signing and say: "I hope he can make a big contribution", he will get injured for two months before even setting foot on the pitch (presumably pulling a muscle while reaching for the TV remote).

There is absolutely no benefit from calling a press conference introducing your new signing, and the risk of upsetting either him or his teammates is so large that the feature is entirely broken.

As for the OP - I see patterns too, but then again I have also noted that when I say "their striker is so useless that he cannot possibly score" he always scores immidiately afterwards, just to troll me. There are patterns everywhere. The biggest pattern of them all is your style of play; your ideas of how the game is supposed to be played.

Take the underdog/favourite pattern, for example. I find that it is much more difficult to win and play well when I am the favourite, and I often crush the opponent completely when I am the underdog. This is exactly the opposite pattern of yours, suggesting that it is me and you that create those patterns, not the game. I shouldn't punish stronger teams as severly as I am, though, so to me it is clear that the AI's attacking tactics are much worse than their defending tactics. I think the balance is not right; on one side you have the fact that they have more quality on their side, they have more fans to support them and probably more experience in bigger matches... but on the other side they are prone to complacency since they are such big favourites and to combat that the managers put a lot of pressure on them to make them perform. So when I don't do what I am supposed to do as an underdog away in front of 60 000 fans (10 men behind the ball hoping for the best) but instead go for their throat and get an early goal, I know from experience that all that pressure and all that complacency backfires completely. All that quality is now lost, and an easy win for me. Is this realistic? I think not - the main problem is the lack of emphasis on player quality in the ME. A player with 10 in technique, first touch and passing should simply not be able to hit a 40 meter bullet pass directly to a teammate on the run while under pressure. As it is now advanced playing styles (Barca football) isn't restricted to good players, and you see fantastic, quick, passing moves all the way down to amateur football. Right now FM is very form based and form is a pattern.

I rarely see a reaction from the rest of the team but I would agree that new signings themselves seem to be "unhappy" with the press conference too often.

Only world class players can hit good passes now??

Jeez I used to do that for fun at Sunday league level.

Maybe you had more than 10 in those attributes? ;)

But seriously, in-form players in FM does not have any relation to the same players out of form in terms of attributes.

The only pattern that's true is that if you stop jabbing a penalty taker with your mouse pointer as he's taking his run up, you won't be able to put him off.

Jabbing the penalty taker with your mouse pointer? Now, that's just silly.

What puts him off is shouting at the screen: "You're gonna miss! You're gonna miss!" ;)

There is a simple solution to the OP's problems. Go read a book like this

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Predictably-Irrational-Hidden-Forces-Decisions/dp/0007256523

or this

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Nudge-Improving-Decisions-Health-Happiness/dp/0141040017/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1329221428&sr=1-1

The moral of the story is that the human brain is very good at finding patterns, whether or not the pattern actually exists. There is proven by a great deal of scientific research.

My thoughts to the OP in bold...

Saying a player WILL score loads after getting one means he won't score for ages

- Don't say anything then

Winning about 5 games in a row and losing to a shocking team in the league after battering them

- Is it always 5 games, or sometimes 4 or 6? If the latter, then it's not a pattern

Conceding in the last 5 mins of games, being interviewed about it and it still manages to occur?

- I don't understand how your interview can change the past

Struggling to beat shocking teams but NEVER causing upsets

- This could suggest your team is just rubbish. I struggle to beat shocking teams sometimes, but also get quite a few upsets

Saying you expect a win usually means you won't

- This could put too much pressure on your players, meaning they will play nervously. Team talk basics.

9/10 paying over the odds for players apart from the odd player e.g. Enyeama, Tshabalala in recent years BUT...

- Simply don't pay over the odds! You can get bargains if you put the effort in. I picked up Ganso for £7m, best signing I've made in FM12.

... Hardly ever getting a big bid for one of yours to the same extent

- It's because AI managers know how much they want to spend and don't go silly

Lack of consistency from certain players; Generally when a player plays crap they won't turn form around, even with encouragement

- So they play crap and don't turn form around? Sounds pretty consistent to me, albeit consistently bad.

Players that start the game poor generally continue that way unless they get a move

- Again, pretty consistent! perhaps your tactics don't suit the players?

Press conferences about goals before half-time ALWAYS lead to your next couple of games having them

- Considering that most games average at least 2 goals, there is a good chance of one being in the first half

Battering opposition but not taking chances ALWAYS leads to a 1 goal defeat undeservedly

- Always, really? I doubt it. It happens very rarely to me, frustrating when it does but then that's part of football. More often for me is being the team taking a battering and nicking a 1-0 win.

Really?!?! I have no problem getting a good response. I get 'pleased' or 'delighted' pretty much every single time. Unusual for me to have a differing opinion to you. Must be something we are doing fundamentally different.

Saying a player WILL score loads after getting one means he won't score for ages

not always at all

Winning about 5 games in a row and losing to a shocking team in the league after battering them

this has happened to me, once in about 18 seasons, and i know exactly why it happened.

Conceding in the last 5 mins of games, being interviewed about it and it still manages to occur?

the interview will not change the past, not sure what you expect here.....

Struggling to beat shocking teams but NEVER causing upsets

its your tactics.

Saying you expect a win usually means you won't

depends who you say it against, if your Norwich and you got to Old Trafford saying you expect to win then yes, you will struggle, play at home as Man U against Norwich and use it will produced a better result.

9/10 paying over the odds for players apart from the odd player e.g. Enyeama, Tshabalala in recent years BUT...

... Hardly ever getting a big bid for one of yours to the same extent

Ai doesnt want to sell so they make you over pay whereas your actively trying to sell a player, big difference in scenario's

Lack of consistency from certain players; Generally when a player plays crap they won't turn form around, even with encouragement

Some players lack consistency, no matter what you try

Players that start the game poor generally continue that way unless they get a move

do you mean poor moral or poor technically?

Press conferences about goals before half-time ALWAYS lead to your next couple of games having them

There are two halves to football, chances are your going to concede in the first half quite a lot of the time.

Battering opposition but not taking chances ALWAYS leads to a 1 goal defeat undeservedly

How many times is always, if your saying every game then again its tactical.
