Not Enough well known/semi famous ex-players getting managment jobs?

Recommended Posts

I'm running a few dummy saves to see how the game evolves is anyone else finding that the further into the game you go the more obscure the AI management appointments are? No ex-players seem to be developing into particularly good managers.

In my 2028 Premiership I have:

Arsenal - Alan Shearer (had a manager profile at game start)

Aston Villa - Deitmar Kuhbauer (had manager profile at game start)

Blackburn - Paul Tisdale (had manager Profile at Game start)

Bristol City - Simon Cronin (REGEN ex USA manager - no Club football experience before appointment)

Chelsea - Zvonimir Soldo (had manager profile at game start)

Leeds - Igor Pamic (had manager profile at game start)

Leicester - Paul Ince (had manager profile at game start)

Liverpool - Gareth Southgate (had manager profile at game start)

Man City - Steve Eyre (had manager profile at game start)

Man Utd - Frank de Boer (Youth Coach at Ajax at game start)

Newcastle - Ole Gunnar Solskjaer (had manager profile at game start)

Notts Forest - Juan Agudelo (Ex USA International turned manager after a spell as Forest Youth Coach)

QPR - Paul Lambert (had manager profile at game start)

Sheffield Utd - Barry Smith (had manager profile at game start)

Southampton - Keith Hill (had manager profile at game start)

Sunderland - John Karelse (had manager profile at game start)

Swansea - Craig Levein (had manager profile at game start)

Tottenham - Ricardo Moniz (had manager profile at game start)

West Brom - Derek McInnes (had manager profile at game start)

West Ham - Andy Thorn (had manager profile at game start)

Not a single current 2012 player is trying his hand at top level management in 2028, is this realistic?

So lets have a quick look what has happened to a few of the leaders of premiership teams 2012:

John Terry - Assistant Manager (Chelsea)

Ryan Giggs - No Staff Profile

Rio Ferdinand - Unemployed assistant manager already 50

Ledley King - Youth Coach (Torquay)

Scott Parker - Coach (Ipswich)

Steven Gerrard - First Team Coach (Blackburn)

Joey Barton - Assistant Manager (Rochdale)

Tim Cahill - Vanished

Richard Dunne - Vanished

Is this realistic, the game seems very reticent to promote ex players to manager roles, preferring instead to use mediocre existing managers where possible, maybe in 5 years when all the managers who began the game have retired some ex players will get a go.

Anyone else have any thoughts/experiences?

I'm in 2017 now and in the EPL:

Paul Robinson (the keeper) is manager of Huddersfield,

Leon Osman is in charge of Swansea,

Gilberto Silva is manager of West Ham,

Ricardo Gardner is at Stoke.

And further afield,

Giorgos Karagounis is at Bayern Munich,

Sylvain Wiltord is at Toulouse,

Joseph Yobo is in charge of Santos in South Africa.

Rio Ferdinand has had 2 managers jobs and got sacked from them both.

So my save seems to be pretty balanced, especially as I'm only 6 years in. It does seem to be random which players stay on though, as Cahill is a coach in my game but Giggs has retired altogether.

Im in 2024 and i've got

Phil Neville manager of Chelsea

Rio Ferdinand manager of Ipswich in Premier League

Kevin Davies manager of Liverpool

Hugo Rodallega manager of England

there are many more in the lower leagues as well. I dont think there is a bug here.

I would say I have the opposite problem. Although it is improved from recent years I still think too many people go into big jobs not long after they retire.

Im in 2016 and Michael Owen and Phil Neville manage in the premier league, possibly more, but worst of all, Wayne Bridge has been sacked by both Swansea and Fulham.

To give the game some credit, I think in most appointments of this nature it says they have been promoted within to promote stability, which is a bit more plausible than getting directly appointed

In my career save i have:

Heskey - Swansea manager

Lescott - Hibernian manager

Rodallega - Bristol City manager

Terry - Chelsea manager

Owen - Auxerre manager

Osman - England manager

Dzagoev - Saturn manager

Higuain - Argentina manager

Ferdinand - Leeds manager

Cahill - QPR manager

Samaras - Greece manager

Hummels - Gladback manager

Parker - West Brom manager

Kevin Davies - Liverpool manager, same as sperlz

Mertesacker - Dortmund manager

Dempsey - Cardiff manager

There are loads more as well, that's just the few i can be bothered to write down.

Just because I know someone will be curious, going back 16 years from now (as the OP's list is from 16 years in the future) gives the following

(listed in order of appointment to current job)
NAME CLUB 16 Years ago
Sir Alex Ferguson Man Utd Manager (Man Utd)
Arsene Wenger Arsenal Manager (Nagoya)
David Moyes Everton Player (Preston North End)
Tony Pulis Stoke City Manager (Gillingham)
Mick McCarthy Wolves Manager (Millwall)
Harry Redknapp Tottenham Manager (West Ham Utd)
Roberto Martinez Wigan Player (Wigan)
Paul Lambert Norwich Player (Motherwell)
Roberto Mancini Man City Player (Sampdoria)
Owen Coyle Bolton Player (Dundee Utd)
Neil Warnock QPR Manager (Plymouth)
Brendan Rogers(1) Swansea Youth Coach (Chelsea)
Alan Pardew Newcastle Utd Player (Barnet)
Steve Kean(2) Blackburn Assistant Manager (Fulham)
Kenny Dalglish Liverpool Unemployed (manager profile)
Roy Hodgson WBA Manager (Inter Milan)
Martin Jol Fulham Manager (Scheveningen)
Alex McLeish Aston Villa Manager (Motherwell)
Andre Villas-Boas(3) Chelsea no profile
Martin O'Neill Sunderland Manager (Leicester City)

Notes

1) Brendan Rogers was contracted as Youth Team Manager by Jose Mourinho, but that's not an option in FM, so I've gone with Youth Coach.

2) I'm not certain about Steve Kean, but he's listed at Wikipedia as working with Chris Coleman at Fulham, and Coleman was Fulham manager in 1996, so I've gone with AssMan.

3) Andre Villas-Boas was 19, and known to Bobby Robson, Porto's manager at the time. Whether he was officially contracted to Porto, I have no idea. He may (in FM terms) have a non-player profile with Scout and/or Coach as his job options, or indeed be a Porto scout/coach.

Sure you can be a youth team manager in the game, just not exclusively, as I doubt anyone is in real life either. Arsenal's youth team manager at the moment is Steve Bould. His position is listed on Arsenal's website as "youth-team coach". But nice list, very interesting.
