And now I realise that when a scout told me a player would be best as an AP with attack, the scout now tells me after the patch update he's best as a winger

I've just blown my transfer money on players that don't suit my formation

if the player is AML/ST play him as striker on the left.

if the player is AMR/ST play him as striker but on the right.

That is how I do it.

You do realize the player has not changed, only the scouting mechanism (or whatever).

Point being, if you sign players based on a few select words based on some questionable mechanism in the scout report rather than all the information available to you - and above all, the actual attributes - now that is what I would call blowing your transfer money needlessly.

Surely you can judge for yourself if a player suits your formation based on their attributes.

it goves you more options, you could of course retrain, wingers should be able to be a striker fairly easily as they are already attacking midfield

It just means he plays best as a winger, not that he can't play where you want him to, and if he can't play there then you should have realised this before blowing your budget, scout report or not.
