You're talking man years of development to do something like this.

It's pretty much the most difficult thing you can do and the end result will be hidden from the majority of users, so it'd need to be done in a version where there are lots of new gimmicky features so that it would make people fork out for the game.

Not sure this is the case, the main issue holding back a 64bit version is the number people still using a 32bit OS, until we start to see 64bit systems having somewhere close to a 75% market share I do not see SI moving on from 32bit.

However the problem with assessing market share is that the majority will be business users who have no reason to move from XP 32 that most will be running, hopefully SI will be keeping a close eye on the data they get on what systems people are using when playing their game.

After reading that FM12 would not be 64-bit I got thinking - would it be possible/plausible to create a user-made patch to make it 64-bit compatible?

Even if it was possible, it would be considered illegal by SI since it would involve altering the .exe file.

It's actually not that difficult to do, unless it's been so badly designed that word sizes are hard-coded.

The end-result wouldn't be hidden for 64-bit users, of which there are is a substantial population.
