First of all, thanks a lot to Mike and Neil who are losing their time with us poor addicted...
And a question: would it be thinkable in the future to have the possibility to specify the player's gender, and maybe to have the pronouns, etc, changing accordingly?
Take care guys (and girls),
S.

No problem at all.

Onto your question, yes, it's something we would like to address in the future although it's actually not as easy to do as it sounds.

To put it bluntly, we were a little on the naive side with how we went about implementing text and translations all those years ago in what has now become "Football Manager".

We've made great strides since then of course and continue to improve this side of things, particularly for when we translate the game into other languages which also have gender based arguments.

The game though has literally thousands of lines of text and they are all split up into little chunks of text and code and then concatenated together, which is where it becomes difficult as you have to get lots of "logic" right to make sure the text knows what context its in.

I hope that made some sense, but it's on our agenda definitely!

Has anyone got the Mac version to work, I downloaded it and installed it but when I go to launch it I am getting the spinning soccer ball of death and a black screen. It's just not loading. And the ball is spinning really slowly. Comments?

If anyone else has this issue, just select the expiration fields and type the numbers. For some reason the eSellerate mac client wont allow you to actually select from the pull down list.

Damn, not sure why that would be for you OneEyedJack.

It might be worth clearing your preferences. I think you can find them here (sorry on the PC at the moment, so this is off the top of my head).

You should probably trash the "Sports Interactive" folder here to see if that helps:

/Users/<username>/Library/Preferences/Sports Interactive/

The expiry date issue, thanks for raising that. I'll talk to the team tomorrow to see if there's anything we can do.

I got the Mac version working....only odd thing I have is that I get no input from the keyboard. I'll reboot at some point and see if it fixes it.

Otherwise it makes entering your name a little trickier than it needs to be. Managed to circumvent that...game seems to be fine otherwise

My Digital Download for Fm2008 played fine before the beta patch. After the beta patch, I NOW CAN NOT PLAY IT BECAUSE I NEED THE CD?? WTF

meter
25-10-2007, 19:14
musint-the beta patch is for boxed versions of FM. You have the Digital Download which will take a different patch. The patches are not compatable.

Reinstall your game and wait until early next week for correct beta patch.

Unless your Digital Download came boxed in some way, I think you might have made a mistake.

"
There will be many different versions of the "beta" patch available for the different variations of the game. As these become available, the game name will be in bold lettering.

Football Manager 2008 PC boxed - http://download.sega.com/u/fm2008_patch/fm2008_801_betapatch.exe
Football Manager 2008 Mac boxed - http://download.sega.com/u/fm2008_patch/fm2008_801_betapatch.dmg
WWSM 2008 PC boxed - coming soon (likely early next week)
WWSM 2008 Mac boxed - coming soon (likely early next week)

WWSM 2008 Digital Download - coming soon (likely early next week)
Futbol Manager 2008 Digital Download - coming soon (likely early next week)

The reason for them being available at different times is that the different versions all need different installers, which take quite a bit of time to build, and also need to be tested (the installer) before we can make them live. We appreciate your patience during this time, and they will all go live as soon as we can get them done.
"

I think it wasn't the best of ideas to release this test beta patch, it just confuses people with all the versions and there will always be complainers '...and yet another download! come on SI get it straight... bla bla'

Does anybody know the size of the file you download from Direct2Drive ?

The other site Boonty had a 5Mb downloader and then apparently the game was downloaded after payment.

This, Direct2Drive just started downloading something after payment and there's no indication of what is it.

I also had to pay by paypal as i couldn't get the expiration date to change. I tried typing stuff.

my post was deleted. But for direct 2 drive the file is 475. You pay get an activiation code, download it, then when you installed, and run the game it lets you activate.

Just curious - are there going to be any more PC download options available for WWSM in the coming days?

The only reason I ask this is because my only payment option is PayPal (no credit card), and it seems that both Boonty and D2D don't support it. (I thought Boonty *did* based on their website, but the payment page for WWSM doesn't have that option surprisingly.)

Any info would be appreciated. Thanks. http://community.sigames.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

With Boonty you download their installer app (5mb) which downloads the game

With D2D you download the full game in one and activate

Presumably those retrictions are because I am in South America. I've checked my IP address, and it is correctly locating where I am. I had the same problem, so I saved the setup world (without adding a manager) and restarted WWSM, and the keyboard works fine.

I don't know how I entered my expiration date, but I got it to work somehow.

Little speed bumps on the road, nothing more. Great job.

Mark already said that nope.
You have only "2 activation slots", when you have used them both, to free one of them you need to call Direct2Drive or Boonty (depending on where you bought it) to free the "old slot".
So, basically, you can have FM in more than 2 PCs at the same time. http://community.sigames.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

If I'm honest, probably not. We need to lock the code down to build the relevant source control trees. I can tell you though that the final patch release will go to everyone on the same day.

Mark, in the faq on the first page you say that the gae can be activated on 2 machines using Boonty... does that mean that we get 3 activations fron Direct2Drive.

You'll only be able to install the game 2 (or 3) times on that computer. After that point you'll need to contact support and convince them to let you play your game some more. It's very crappy technology considering eLicense allows you to activate/deactivate your licenses as much as you want, hence allowing you multiple installs.

Perhaps a 3rd time. But beyond that you will have to ask support for another activation.

Click the blue/gray finder face icon in the bottom left. Click the house on the left hand side (if there isn't a house showing, click Go up at the top then Home).

Double click the Library folder

Grab the Caches folder and drag it to the trash.

Click on your hard-drive on the left hand-side of the screen (probably called Macintosh HD), double click library then grab caches and drag it to trash (it'll ask for a password). If your Hard drive doesn't show on the left click Go at the top then computer then double click your hard drive.

Click Go at the top of the screen then click Utilities. Double-click Disk Utility. Click your hard-drive (probably called Macintosh HD) then click (once) on repair disk permissions. When that's done, quit disk utility and shut down the computer.

Locate the Apple key, Option key, P key and R key. Turn it on and hold down those 4 keys until you hear the startup chime 3 times then let them go. Once it boots up empty the trash.

If you have an older mac (G5, G4, G3)... The next step won't work on an Intel Mac

locate the Apple key, Option key, O key and F key. Turn it on and hold down those 4 keys until you get to an all-text screen then let them go. Type in the following commands (no spaces in any of them)

set-defaults
reset-nvram
reset-all

Once it starts up empty the trash.

And finally, if you want to check your Operating System... there's 2 ways to do that. (Both of them work on Intel or G5, G4, G3).

a) if you have the discs:

Put install disc 1 in the computer. Shut the computer down. When you turn the computer on (as soon as you can after releasing the power button), hold down the letter C until you see the grey apple with the spinning gear underneath.

You'll get to a screen that says "choose english as the main language". Continue to the next screen and look at the very top of your screen. Click Utilities (next to Finder) then click Disk Utility. (If you don't see Utilities, try clicking Installer then Disk Utility). Click your hard drive then click Repair Disk. Do NOT do repair disk permissions from the disk!

Once that's done, click Disk Utility, quit. Then click Installer, Quit Installer then Restart.

b) if you don't have the discs:

Get the computer to shut down. When you turn it on, hold down the apple key and the letter S. When you get to an all-text screen release the keys. Type in

/sbin/fsck -fy

(please notice the space between k and -)

That will check your operating system. You're going to get one of 3 things

i) the volume <name> appears to be okay (congrats you're good to go!)

ii) one HFS volume repaired (press the up arrow and run the command again, it fixed something).

iii) the underlying task reported failure on exit (your HFS volume is pooched, you'll likely need to do erase & install or use a program like Disk Warrior).

iv) One HFS volume repaired, one volume could not be repaired (same as iii)

Once it's all done, hold the power button for 5 seconds to get it to shut down then turn it on normally.

Then try it again http://community.sigames.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Is the support the same with patches ?
Will I be able to download skins ,backgrounds etc for WSM the same way as FM? These usually are specifficaly made for FM bu I wonder if they would work the same . Great job SI on promoting the game worldwide on the best footie manager .

For those who are thinking about going for digital download (as I did last week almost instantly after it became available which I now regret http://community.sigames.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif), keep in mind, apparently FMM (real-time editor many people use) which we were under the assumption that would work, WONT!!! http://community.sigames.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif http://community.sigames.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_mad.gif

HORRIBLE NEWS for anyone like me who wants to do even minimal editing once the game has already started and you notice some very wrong stuff in database which you feel the need to correct to properly enjoy the game as you don't want to start a NEW one with a new edited database.

OOTP is available on DD all round the world, and none of my local shops stock FM08 and I don't want to traipse 20 odd miles to the nearest place that does. I live in the UK, had no trouble downloading the 500Mb demo so the actual game shouldn't cause too much difficulty.

Is there any chance at all of it being available to download over here in the home of Football?

I'm sure a digital download might be worth more profit than regular gamers. From what I've read steam takes half the money for gamers on it's service, and that might mean more money for sega as they are only paying for steam, not for productions, manuals, transport, packaging, and then wholesale and retail mark-ups.

If I was running Sega (assuming you make more money from Steam), I'd have the Digital Download version out on Steam, a week before the release date.

If it's close enough to not be that much difference, then release on Steam the same day it releases in the UK.

If the difference is somewhat big, then wait a month. Most people who have bought it would have done it already, and with DD/Steam you might reach people you never would have reached via retail. </div></BLOCKQUOTE>

But in doing this, you'd instantly annoy the retailers by releasing a game digitally before they had a chance to sell it.

From my simple observations, it appears that Sega makes more work than is necessary with regards to branding and direct downloads.

Think about it, you cannot compare FIFA to Football Manager. FIFA is a universal term Football, although universal means different things in different countries. That is why we created WWSM.

It's not your fault or anyone else at SI, Marc. http://community.sigames.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif I'm fully aware of that.

I'm just upset that before making this purchase, I posted in no less than 6-7 threads asking everyone I could very clearly about "IS there, ANY Disadvantages to having Digital Download?"

Everyone replied No. They said, you can even use 3-rd part stuff and there are work-arounds such as changing the name of the file from WWSM.EXE to FM.EXE let's say...

So I went ahead and purchased it almost instantly after it became available. Which now I regret because I haven't played (and don't plan to until final patch is out), and if I hadn't, I'd know about this sad fact by now and just opt not to go for DD.

It's bad decision making on my part which cost me $30.

Now I didn't put this msg here to blame you guys. Just did so anyone else in my shoes who wants to use FMM or other 3-rd party softwares and hasn't gone for DD option yet, knows about it and goes for another option such as importing it or buying a real CD copy from stores.

That seems to me to mean that if you live in a country where it is possible to get the software delivered in a box to your house then you won't be able to download it. So, because it can be delivered in the UK we obviously won't be allowed to download it, but Marc seems very evasive on that question.

From Play.com: £24.99 (shipping included)
From Amazon.co.uk: £24.98

That being said, RRP is £34.99, but I still think this is pretty stupid.

Is it costlier to sell games online than the traditional way? Or, if I may put on my skeptical shoes, is the profit margin just much larger?

Well, I wont be paying £10 extra for a version that's no different than the boxed one other than having to wait for an unknown length of time.

I hope you revise your pricing and policies with regards to digital downloads for your next release. It ought to be encouraged, not discouraged.

(That being said, the games are fantastic. I just want the developer to follow the standard of excellence that their flagship-game is known for.)

True, I can purchase the game from play.com and get it delivered to my doorstep but the thing is that my country custom policy charges us extra money for online purchases. So buying a book, cd or a software costs me almost the double price... I'd say in this case 35-50 pounds.

Good news WWSM and Futbol Manager friends, a beta patch is headed your way...these will be rolled out as follows

- WWSM patch for CD holders coming tonight
- WWSM/Futbol Managet PC digital patch (BOonty, D2D) tomorrow (fingers crossed)
- WWSM/Futbol Managet Mac digital patch tomorrow (fingers crossed

First of all, a big thanks to Sports Interactive for their help in the problems being able to download the game. To put this in context, the Customer Service / Query teams at both Booty and D2D were utterly useless, so I probably still wouldn't have Futbol Manager if it wasn't for SI's intervention.

My question is this; Does Futbol Manager have the same problems as the boxed version of football Manager. I ask because I've read some of the posts about bugs and problems in the original version, and its just not tying up with my experience. Sure my game's crashed once, and as this was after my team (who started the season with a huge point deduction) had won 4 in a row, I was disappointed by this, but other than that I don't see any major problems. Is the game perfect? Well probably not, but certainly none of the major problems that some players are reporting, either in player game day performances or player morale etc.

So I'm thinking that I won't download the beta fix, because the problems were sorted out on Futbol manager, and because so many people are complaining about the beta patch making things worse.

How have other people found Futbol Manager, or WWSM dwnload? Am i just lucky?

Marc Duffy
02-11-2007, 08:24
You'll find you are part of the majority - the code base for Futbol Manager is the same as FM but it's quite often those with the problems shouting the loudest. Many people play the game and don't spot anything wrong.

Enjoy it http://community.sigames.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

The beta patch is been realised today?

02-11-2007, 10:47
Many people play the game and don't spot anything wrong.

I'm coming around to this way of thinking. I downloaded WWSM the day it came out, and while I've followed (and contributed) to the threads about the beta patch, I'm beginning to think that I won't download it till its final. I think that tactics can downplay or make worse alot of the so called bugs. I, in over a half season, haven't had more then two or three goals TOTAL called back and while I've noticed the closing down problem it hasn't really affected my game. That may be because playing in the lower league giving midielders alot of space just encourages them to try long shots that don't have much a chance.

It's hard with all the complaints to figure out whether or not to install it when the beta patch comes out. I hear great things about the match engine, but lots of complaints about yellow cards and spectacular free kicks. I also get the sense that some people would complain about just about anything just to complain.

I guess I'm going to have to figure it out soon though.

Say for example I DL the game but I restore my computer back factory status or get a new computer altogether, could I just come back and redownload the game?

Maybe I'm missing something easy here but is there a way to backup our DD at home?

I d'loaded from boonty and the game installed and activated itself. However unlike elicense I don't have a setup\install file that I can burn to cd so I don't have to d'load again if I have a problem. All I have are some small files in the c:\program files\boonty folder that I assume connect me to the d'load again if I need it. When I go to boonty and look at their faq it says I can backup my game. To do that it says to simply backup the "game.exe" file? Maybe I'm wrong but I don't see how that would work with WWSM, again wouldn't I need the whole setup file?

One more install question. If I try the beta and want to go back I have to uninstall\reinstall and from what I've seen this also means re-downloading. If I go this route will my machine know this is still license #1 or will is use my second license? Sorry, if this is a silly question but with elicense I knew this would still be install #1, with boonty I'm not sure. Any help is appreciated.

Heya Marc. Just a quick Q about the esellerate system here... I downloaded and purchased WWSM Mac last night and I want to install it on my MacBook as well. But the purchase screen comes up again, even when I copy the installed folder over to the laptop! =( Where can I put in my license number, or what do I have to do so I don't end up buying a second copy?

Thanks muchly for any help.

I have two questions regarding digital download.

1) I read there something about licenses and activation codes, there are two, but what if I need to reinstall the game more times? I reinstalled FM 07 on my computer like 5 times in total, do I have to buy new activations in such case? How much would it cost?

2) When I get the game, it's exactly the same as if I had the one on CD? I mean code etc.

PS. Sorry for my (probably) very lame questions, however computers aren't my domain, all I understand is how to run FM. I appreaciate anyone's help!

I purchased WWSM from Boonty on 10/30, but when I finish the download portion, I get an error message saying that the installer won't work on my configuration and then the process aborts? I don't know where to start. I have WWSM 2007 purchased through digital download and had no issues at all.

Having trouble installing WWSM 2008 digital download. I download the big 479MB file, and the 5MB installer, but when it installs right near the end it says that a source file is corrupted, and that i must either ignore or retry. Neither leads to a favorable result. I have tried deleting and reinstalling, but that did not help. I was told to try a clean install, we can see if that works. What else should i do? very frustrating...

I had WSM for PC and installed the patch.

My game is really slow, especially in match engine the players are jumping (lagged) most of the time.

I don't play it full screen. I don't know if it would help me to play it like that but I love to jump around to firefox and check stuff etc.

I didn't have problems like this before the patch since the game used to work real smooth.

Anything I can do about it? Is it the patch to blame?

Dear Marc Duffy,

Since I haven't heard back from you via email or spoke to you on MSN for about a month, answer me this question at least here when you see it.

Is it possible for me or someone else in North America to BUY yet another version of digital download, so a friend of ours in China can download and install and play it instead?

This may be what we have to do in order to get Jpee (creator of FMM editor), the WWSM version. And a couple of us are willing to do so. We just need to know if it'll work however.

Obviously, as the posts above state, the Mac download is not working at all. I would like to reiterate that. I just learned about WSM 08 and want VERY much to check this out and probably purchase it (especially from all the great things I keep hearing about it). This has clearly been an issue for a few days now, so can we at least get a comment on what the situation is with the Mac download? Of course, a solution would be better, but at least a word on what's up would be nice.

I can't emphesize the statement above enough. I made a post weeks ago, and sent emails to 2 locations (the first one I sent, gave me back an auto email telling me to post on here first...which I already did). All I want to know is what is going on with the Mac download for this game. If it is not fixed, then is it even being worked on? Is it even on the radar? If we're just being ignored, then it would be cool to know so I dont waist my time waiting for this damn game. I mean, this IS a professional thing right? It seemed that all questions were being answered promptly, until this Mac download problem started happening. All of the sudden, the admin's disappeared?

Look, just tell us...please. Is it being fixed or not? I've been checking this page pretty much every day since I began looking at this game, only wanting an answer...thinking that it couldnt be more than a few hours away. Its only a few sentences. No email response...no post response...just let me know if I can look forward to downloading this game or not...

and I KNOW I can order the cd...but I would like to try it out first...and the Mac demo isnt working either...the download says "Try & Buy." I would just like that chance...

Hard to say seeing as SI/Sega have forgot about this thread. Maybe they're focused on the next game, patch or the PSP-version or something. I tried sending mails to both Vaughan and that guy from Sega, but neither have replied.

It's pretty amateurish that the game hasn't been made available as a digital download yet for all of Europe (and the world for that matter). This isn't exactly the third world, must I buy the bloody boxed version?

I don't want the manual, I don't want a paper or plastic box/container, I don't want a poster or a mousepad - I just want the game!

I don't know what's going on now, being a mere customer. I'm still waiting for an answer as to whether or not there's a downloadable PC version I can use a Mac reg code on. </div></BLOCKQUOTE>

No, codes for PC work for PC, and Macs only work on Mac. I'd love a dual format download, but it's not possible, according to Matt from Sega, because of the companies who are doing the lisences.

Then again, I'd love if the Mac link worked at all, so I could at least try this game.

Nothing? This isn't improving my views of SI over the last couple years.

I'm trying to install the game on my laptop and keep receiving a message saying "The SERIAL was not found in the database." I have checked the number numerous times and it is correct. I have the game up and running on my desktop. How do I go about getting it going on my laptop?
Tried e-mailing support@sigames.com as the error message suggested but it is always returned as undeliverable.

Grr - so I had to reformat my computer a few times over the past week due to problems - got it all sorted out now, but can't unlock WWSM. I assume I've hit the "amount of times it has been installed" mark. The Boonty webpage has a section where you can get a new code by completing a form - here is the page (http://www.boonty.com/us/casual/contact.php?action=unlock&intIdSite=35) but of course, WWSM isn't bloody listed. I guess I have to contact their customer service(and of course, WWSM isn't listed on the form there). Anyone got any idea how long they generally take to respond? I e-mailed them twice last week due to an issue with their page, and never received a response from that either.

hey everyone, has anybody managed to purchase wwsm08 from Europe yet?

I prefer digital versions to boxed ones and would like to get this game.

Also are there separate patches for fm08 and wwsm08?
appreciate any replies
thanks

bodonodon, I believe you aren't allowed to download if you live in Europe, though I may be mistaken.

On the topic of digital downloads, is the Mac version ever going to be up? Or was that a limited time only offer?

I downloaded the Mac version in November - and paid for it too. I need reinstall it though to check out the new patch. I hope it's still available (it really should be). SI?

I guess it's too late now. They've finished working on the game, they've finished providing support and answers to the questions. They're probably to busy with FM Live to even acknowledge the world around them.

Why, I don't know. Maybe it's because they've had all the award ceremonies for games. Maybe they've already sold enough to make the game a success. It's like U2, as long as they sell 5 million albums, who cares if the songs are so-so?

I'm not really this cynical, but this is the first time I've experienced this kind of blatant disregard from SI.

Love the games, hating this.

For the Mac version of WWSM, the link on the Sega site doesn't work:

Is there anywhere to download the try and buy? I don't want to get the CD version - seems like a waste.

I have downloaded the Mac version of WSM 08. However, I am unable to purchase the product as when the e-sellerate purchase screen appears, there is no option to buy WSM 08. This problem has been brought up in a separate forum:
http://community.sigames.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/5211026...102057093#6102057093 (http://community.sigames.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/521102691/m/6102057093?r=6102057093#6102057093)
as well. Is there something that I am doing wrong or something I need to do differently in order to complete the purchasing process? Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

thanks

I have contacted e-sellarate about this issue hoping that they could point out what I had done wrong. I received the following response:

"
Hello again Jere:

After reviewing this product again, it appear that the publisher of this
product currently has this product marked such that it is not for sale.
I'm not sure if this intentional. I have CC'ed the developer of the
product on this email, as well. Perhaps he will be able to assist us
with this issue.

Sports Interactive: If you need any assistance with your product's
configuration in your publisher account, please don't hesitate to let us
know.
"

Will WSM 08 be made available for purchase through digital download again?

thanks

In order to play with a friend who has WSM 2007, I've tried to download and buy WSM 2007. The try and buy demo is evidently crippleware, and even after buying the game via the built-in app, there are features missing such as the pre-game editor.

What do I need to do in order to get the full version of 2007 going, or get my money back?

I did figure out how to fix my problem:

A) Reinstall using your Order ID.
B) Install the patch.

Since I'm not allowed to edit my own posts (and whose brilliant idea was that? http://community.sigames.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif ), I need to clarify that you can do one or the other, it doesn't require both to fix the issue I was asking about.

Hi Marc,
I have just purchased WSM 2008 but am not sure if it's been patched to the latest level (8.0.2 ?)
If it hasn't - where can I get the latest patch for WSM 2008 ? The update functionality within the game brings me to an error page on the SI site saying that the download was not found in your download archives.

Thanks,
Travis

Is WWSM 08 compatable with Windows Vista? I just got a new lap top and want to download it so I can play when I am on vacation, or will I have to wait for 09 to be compatable with Vista?

I already have the CD (or is it DVD? - whichever!) version of FM2008. I'd now like to get the digital download version for my notebook (no CD or DVD drive). Is there any way I could get it for free?

Can you not just install the CD version on your notebook?

Installing it is not the problem. Because my sub-notebook has no CD drive, there's no way to play the games
