quick tracking back question..

Recommended Posts

Two things to consider are:

A) You might have wingers/strikers who lack workrate/teamwork etc and don't want to track back.

B) Having them track back all the time means a lot of work which will tire them out.

If you want to counter a specific threat I always find setting them to man mark a specific player helps to get them behind the ball and involved defensively.

If you defend deeper, the wingers will possibly find themselves on the right side of the opposition wingers. If you put them into a midfield position, they will do this more often too. Defensive mentality will also help. Reducing runs from deep may help too.

Closing down is just how often they will leave their position to chase the guy with the ball. If you push up in order to dominate the game, closing down a lot will help you win the ball more often. If you drop deep, a high closing down will be pointless because the only reason to drop deep is to deny the opposition the space to outplay you and therefore letting the players leave their space to chase the guy with the ball will only open up space behind him.

So to get your wingers to defend for you, drop deep and reduce closing down.
