I had the same thing happen to me (all monetary values in the game shoot up but still £ sign), went back into the game just now, looked in prefs, currency was £ sterling and when I loaded the game up it was back to normal; as I didn't have to change the currency setting back, I'm now not sure if that's actually what I had!
