Can you sell a player on designated player contract?

Depends what country you are in but if its the MLS then only a portion counts towards the wage budget, not sure about other countries or even if any others have DPs (Australia? maybe)

Aside from that there shouldn't be an issue with selling them - again if its the MLS the league will take a cut (33%?) of the fee and you'll get a bigger allocation fund.

Be sure to check your boardroom/wages screen, and see if you can edit your wage budget (take it away from transfer funds and apply it towards wages.) You can also ask your board to make a higher % of transfer funds available.

In terms of selling them: as Toronto FC I've sold De Guzman every game for double his value ($2.6 = $5.2 million) to Blackburn, and one time I sold Semir Stillic after AZ met his $10 million asking price less than a year after I paid $1.3 million for him. Look for younger players (I won't touch anyone over the age of 25) and you should have no problem attracting interest.
