Acer Aspire 5742Z Laptop

Recommended Posts

I am in need of a new laptop, as my current one is slow, bulky, has a short battery life, and most importantly, plays FM11 very slowly and often turns off before matches. So, I've had a quick look around, and a laptop I've come across is the Acer Aspire 5742Z. However, I am not going to get it until I have confidence it will run FM11 well.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Acer-Notebook-Pentium-Wireless-Windows/dp/B0045UBCR6/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1303211958&sr=8-3

So, what do you guys think? Will it be okay to play FM11 on?

Thanks :)

The best is Dell??? Mother of crap :D I've heard nothing but crap about them, even from people in the industry.

Acer is a cheap brand though, but it's actually pretty darn good. I've got an Acer emachine myself and have had no problems with it. They have good hardware, but the building blocks of the laptop itself isn't the best. That's where they save money. But you get great value for money in terms of hardware. As long as you buy one with a 'proper' graphics card you should be able to play FM fine.

I don't play FM on my laptop as I'm not a fan of the mousepad (and too lazy to hook up the mouse all the time). But I've run speed tests on my laptop and FM was faster than on the desktop.

I have found Dell excellent, recommended to family and friends, they have never had any problems, there customer support is excellent as well, agree with the Acer, cheap but there laptops have a awful habit of over heating and shutting down with it, have a Toshiba Satellite Pro, that has been a let down too, the screen packed up for no reason after 10 months, so have to say my Dell 1720 has been the winner in my household.

Hi Super Danny Graham

The laptop is a custom built one via http://pcspecialist.co.uk

Click on the above link and then click on the 'build your own laptop' on the left hand side of their home screen.

You can mix and match what you want to increase or reduce price or just input what I have in the earlier thread.

I'm sure there are other laptops/companies out there but may be worth considering that site. If you want expert advice on the laptop and its ability to do what you want it to then enter their forums and post your spec as they have very good experienced IT guys who will help you amend/modify the build to get what you want from it with the price range you have.

Ive an Acer 5375Z and whilst it is a perfectly decent machine it only has one star for FM. I'd have preferred to have spent an extra £100 on a better machine.

There are plenty of deals at the moment including 9 months interest free. If you're good with money and pay off in this time frame that is always the best option

Thanks a lot PW- have you used this website before, and if so did you build your own laptop? What are they like?

Hi Super Danny Graham

I've used the company for a desktop build.

Had a few issues with the build as it was damaged in transit but all in all I would recommend them.

They have very good support via their forums and you can call their support team as well (although they can get quite busy).

Based on their prices, their support, and the quality of their components and builds they may be worth considering.

I would advise that you maybe post the spec above that I gave you in their Forum (there is a part of the forum specifically asking for opinions on your build), explain what you want the laptop for and you will normally get very good advice as to whether it is a good build or whether it needs tweaking in certain areas.

Acer are terrible quality, you want to steer well clear. They tend to die very quickly, and as it's a laptop, when one bit blows, the whole thing is pretty much a dud (because replacing the part costs you more than the laptop is worth in a couple of years).

You're probably much better off spending a bit more money on something that will last you a while.
