View Full Version : Football Manager Podcast March 28th edition out now

Miles Jacobson
05-10-2007, 10:49
For those who don't know already, we (SI) do a weekly Football Manager podcast now, which is available through Itunes, mainly about football, but with some FM and FML stuff thrown in for good measure.

The final podcast of the series, which was recorded on 28th March, is now available.

It features Miles hosting, with guests James Olley from the Evening Standard and Craig Bloomfield from Loaded, alonside producers Laura and Nick.

This week we're talking about all the current big topics in football and answering some questions sent in from the listeners.

Don't forget that you can subscribe to the podcast, completely free of charge, through Itunes, and can get old episodes of it from there too.

You do not need an Ipod to listen to the podcast, as you can listen to it in the Itunes client, using any other media playing software, or any other machine capable of playing MP3's.

There's also a Facebook group for the podcast at http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=6697826331&ref=mf

The podcast will return in a couple of months, and there will be little updates in the meanwhile when there's stuff to talk about...

Downloading as I type. Should be interesting http://community.sigames.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Is it something you plan to have some user involvement in?

I'm certainly no technophone, but I think I'm too old for terms like 'Podcasts', http://community.sigames.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif so here goes a stupid question:

Do I need an I-Pod to play one? Or is it just a fancy term for a standard audio download? I don't really understand the idea of them. Can someone who's a bit younger than me explain the concept?

VonBlade

It's an MP3. You don't need an iPod at all. It's just a fancy "in" term for mp3s. Beats me why but there it is http://community.sigames.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

So if you have media player (which you will have) then it'll play just fine.

Excellent, thanks. http://community.sigames.com/customicons/icon14.gif I've always avoided "podcasts" as I've linked their name to I-Pods, something I've never owned and probably never will (My phone has a 2GB card and some headphones, what do I need an I-Pod for?). Should just call them MP3s and be done with it!

Anyway, will probably download loads of them now I know not to be scared of them, starting with this one just as soon as I get home from work today. http://community.sigames.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

It should be available through Itunes I believe for those who would like to get it that way, but you do not need an Ipod to listen to it.

As has been said, it's just an MP3. But these are most popular through Itunes, hence it being called a podcast.

Actually the format is m4a http://community.sigames.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_razz.gif

Is there any chance of this being released in a higher quality? 32kbps 22kHz just doesn't cut it for me I'm afraid, I can't listen to audio this poor anymore. I can understand you probably want to keep the filesizes down but broadbands pretty fast these days, how about a low and high quality link for each show? Between 96-128kbps and 44kHz would do the job for a high quality link really.

muncherdave - at some point in the future, yes. This was our first one, and if they go well, we'll start doing them a bit more professionally with more than one mic http://community.sigames.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

superman_uk123 - fair point about the closing date. Next Thursday lunchtime. Will make sure I mention that next time. Name and address would be good.

STANNY08 - they should be weekly, in a perfect world. No RSS feed yet, but we'll look to set one up if they are popular and we keep going...

pretty good for a first attempt, worked well but seamed rather biased towards the premiership and champions league, maybe touch on the ain issues outside the top flight (ie Leeds coming back to mid table already despitr 15 point deduction) and more general topics like the idea of only the captain being able to talk to the ref etc

Pretty good though and I'll give it a listen next week

mallen102000 - please send a mail with that in. Good, and valid, feedback, same as me trying to talk about the Scottish teams a bit.

What we want to do in the future is get some of the researchers (head researchers and maybe some club ones) to talk about their countries and clubs, but that will require some technology on our phone system that isn't sorted yet...

Perhaps you could just use something like Skype and record the conversation with a sound recording program or wave editor? I don't use Skype myself but I hear its reasonable for making calls with, I have no idea what sort of quality you can get with it either though. Depends on how decent a microphone they have as well I suppose, but just an idea in case you haven't thought of it

I thought that this was a good start; I enjoyed listening to it and I will certainly listen to the next one.

My favourite parts were the FM related discussion, for example the banter about FM Live, and I'd like to have heard a bit more of this.

Perhaps you could also introduce a few regular items in the podcast to give it a bit more structure, e.g. invite listeners to send in questions/comments and spend 10 minutes discussing any interesting ones at the end of the podcast, or get a developer on each week to talk about their area of the game.

Neville_Roach
05-10-2007, 16:00
Im surprised by the lack of feedback for this as i think it could be very successful; thats not to say theres not some way to go.

Someone mentioned already that it is an m4a, and i have to say this standard quality is nearly unbearable for me.

Added to this the factor of one mic (mentioned by miles) and a little bit of training for you all that when one person speaks the others must wait their turn to avoid it sounding really messy and through this quality you just cant understand it!

I think theres some good caracters that will develop if you do more but because your a bunch of blokes talking about football it does occasionally drift into what sounds like a 'pub recording'.

I think perhaps some structured features based on the weeks football, perhaps inplementing some media interview recordings - the curtis davies one would have perfect this week for your discussion. Or looking down the leagues to someone who has pulled a howler - a stat of a lower league player that has managed to score a hatric of own goals or something funny!
It may gimmick it up slightly ut it would drag it away from the 'pub conversation' i mentioned erlier, and turn into more of a structured 'radio' type podcast. (any other ideas :S !?!)

On the whole i would def download if the quality was better and it was broken down into some features that i looked forward to listening too, as it is i have these coversations with my friends every week and dont know if i would listen to this for an hour every week.

Great start though guys, all the best for this space for the future!

Miles loved the podcast. More on the Scottish teams mate would be great. The SPL is getting better this year and with some of the results so far it makes interesting chat i think.

Maybe in the podcast you could have Manager of the week, Player of the week etc etc for a bit of fun. Maybe something daft they have done, IE: Dida gets diddy of the week for that way he went down like a ton of bricks at Celtic park last wed. or if a mananger gives a really lame or daft excuse for getting beat that week or something.

You need to type "The football manager podcast" into the search, and subscribe (just "football manager" doesn't seem to work for some reason).

for those without itunes, i'd recommend downloading it, it is free and isn't a bad way of organising your music. also you can download loads of other podcasts via itunes (i'd recommend the podcasts of russell brand and chris moyles)

We're no.1 in the games and hobbies section at Itunes, which is pretty damn amazing! Thank you to all those who have subscribed so far - tell all your friends, as it would be amazing to crack the top 100 overall chart, and knock John Cleese out of it. Hmm.....

i enjoy the podcast. i listen to several football pods, some quite obscure, but the FM one is actually a good laugh. wide ranging and fun. now the games out will we see more game related chat? and mention how awesome Bristol City are doing back in the championship! what the odds for a Watford/BCFC 1/2 like back in 97/98 eh? http://community.sigames.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif
cheers for that Miles.

PS out of interest, do you just use one mic? because the only thing i'd say is that some of the guys are a bit quiet in the background. i realise that's being right picky, but just thought you might benifit from the feedback. keep up the good work

Miles Jacobson
19-10-2007, 07:28
Redhood1 - at the moment, we are using 1 mic. As the podcast has been so popular, we are investing in a little mixing desk thingy, so that'll change in a few weeks.

The new one should be up in an hour or so. It's quite long, there is some game stuff in there, and the strangest competition known to man. Or dinosaur.

Naryana
25-10-2007, 05:45
I must echo the comments of it being harder to hear the guys in the back ground. Hopefully this will be sorted when you invest in an extra mic.

So far I've listened to the first and third podcast, missing out on the second as I didn't know it had been released and as I wasn't yet subscribed on iTunes. Maybe it would be a good idea to update the title of this thread once a new podcast is released, ie. 'The Football Manager Podcast - Episode 4 Out Now'. I'm sure it would be to much effort once a week http://community.sigames.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Keep up the good work, and I look forward to tomorrows podcast.

listened to the latest podcast yesterday and i have to say it has amazed me how good it is. After listening the first podcast i was undecided whether it was going to be a good idea but after listening to the latest one i have been fully won over.

I would like to make one suggestion though. This is that there is more talk about European football for example Spanish football, Italian football and maybe french and german football (maybe not german football because no one is interested in germans)

Thanks and keep up the good work

Nice job Miles,

Listening to the podcast since day 1 when you only had the one mic lol

Getting better.... except no 7's doing my head in.
I can hear you in my right earplug and everybody else in my left earplug. Not exactly stereo sound is it, but cant complain much, at least your not all huddled around the one microphone anymore lol

By the way, you give away a copy of FM08 as a competition prize, as it occured to you that most people who listen have already got the game, hence why they tune it to listen to you guys?

Also, what were the silent crisps you were eating as ive been moaned at today at work for crunching my crisps to load.

Congratulations Miles, you managed to count up to 10 until you lost count! http://community.sigames.com/customicons/icon14.gif Xmas special was actually #11, not #10 as you incorrectly stated, but well done for trying.

Just done an all nighter session on FM while also listening to all the podcasts from start to finish. Fantastic. Definately can hear the quality and organisation improving. Sadly you seem to be getting less and less drunk as the podcasts go on http://community.sigames.com/customicons/icon13.gif. Drink more, it makes them ever more entertaining! What happened to the hints and tips you started giving out in the first few, you just kind of stopped? Is this due to overrunning?

Quite amusing listening to all these podcasts a few weeks after the events, such as when you said there was no chance Gary Megson would join Bolton as he had only just joined Leicester... How wrong could you have been!

Awesome podcasts however, and keep up the good work. Can't wait for the next one!

Miles Jacobson
06-01-2008, 14:38
John Van Lampard - the same one you sent the competition entry to should work.

Abaddon879 - I knew keeping count wasn't a good idea http://community.sigames.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

Sure, I got it wrong about Megson. But lots of stuff right too - such as Spurs coming back from 2-0 down to win 3-2 during one http://community.sigames.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

As for drinking more, the Xmas one was the only one where I didn't drink just as much. Maybe I'm getting better at hiding it.

The "players to buy for teams" stuff will come back - seriously over ran the last 3. Any suggestions can be made to either the email address given out, or on the Facebook page.

Guanyuzhizi - Xmas is the time for Father Xmas and Reindeers, not the time for trolls.

Given the choice of having Itunes on my PC or not listening to the podcast then I will choose the latter so everyone loses out. http://community.sigames.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_confused.gif

That's the first time I listened to the podcast - mainly because I didn't realise by the forum thread title that you didn't need an iPod to listen to it.

Anyway, I really enjoyed it (all 2 hours of it nearly).

Great ideas in there for the future episodes and I'm looking forward to listening to them.

p.s. As for adding yourself into the game (as you spoke about in the podcast), I haven't done that but I did add my wife as a Physio so she could get her hands on the footballer's bodies. Everyone's happy then. http://community.sigames.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Keep up the good work.

ok, im gonna have to put my request on here, as i wont have time over the weekend and ill probably forget to do it. love some feedback on it.

1. Like to know more about what influence the weather/state of pitch & its size as to do in the game.

I look on the tactics forum quite often.. people say 'oh try this great tactic,no need to change it in the season, use it in all your games, just tweak this n that blah.. blah... blah.." if thats the case, why bother with the weather reports etc. Surely this has some outcome to the matches played.. i mean in real life not many teams play a short passing game on a muddy pitch, so does it effect the game?

Same with pitch size's, im confused with that aswell, im sure its easy to explain.

Ive looked on the forums for topics like these but i havnt found any, guess i could start one lol

2. Coaches and how best to use them.

Do you bother with youth coaches? how many?

Same with 1st team coaches etc...

What would u recommend having, not who!
I play with spurs most of the time and i can only have a max. of 8 coaches, so whats the best balance to have?

ie: 1 1st team/GK/Fitness/2 coaches n 3 youth coaches etc?

If thats the case, how can you then get 7star coaching in every stats?

Thats all i want to know about, any feedback would be appreciated.
Ive listened to the podcasts since day 1, they are great (withdrawel symptoms at moment as i havnt heard any for 2weekd now lol)

+ to be honest there isnt much FM08 conversations going on, Heard Miles say that if we want them to talk abut FM08 more then give them some topics, so there's 2 for you Miles, if you think there ok.

Cheers

matt

Just listening to the podcast. Don't really see the point in it, is it supposed to be about football manager or football in general?

Just sounds like a load of opinionated southerners to me.

Although I have only listened to one so far, hope you discuss the reason FM08 is so bugged etc.

ok, that sounds a bit harsh. Wrong side of bed and all that.

I have a question - what's the most excited you have ever got playing football manager?

If you just listened to that one podcast, I can understand why you were disappointed. It wasn't that great I didn't think, but I did listen to the one from the 7th Feb I think and it was enjoyable.

And I agree that they should incorporate the game much more in their discussions.

http://community.sigames.com/customicons/icon14.gif BRILLIANT!

This last podcast (28th February) is easily the best yet. Well done guys. !!!!

Please keep more of this coming.

The style was great, the content and questions asked by Miles all added up to a thoroughly enjoyable experience - although it could have been a bit longer (please).

Miles, any plans to do a bit on the FM community sites? Like a litttle bit on whats going on at all the major community sites such as Sortitoutsi, FMGLive, FMBritain etc. would be nice to include that and some general news such as FMGLives closure then reopening.

Just an idea, loving the podcast and I liked the bit you did for Gamespot UK by the way http://community.sigames.com/customicons/icon14.gif

The Zog - well, there's no podcasts for a while, so not in the near future. The community round up tends to happen on footballmanager.net, which is probably the best place for it as it's all online.

Love it.

I do my work on a 30 inch Mac cinema screen and listen to the FM podcast to go along with a cup of coffee. Living in the U.S, it's about the only FM chat I get to listen to.

May I suggest Skype (http://www.skype.com/intl/en-gb/) for any calls to researchers or other interviews. There may be a very slight delay, but it does a very good job. Email with any questions.
