Just run fm on your desktop, create a new game, dont create manager, then in preference-network check "run as a server"

Now, on the laptop, select join network game. Either select it in local servers if 2 computers are in LAN, or join other server, type the ip of your desktop, create your manager, type a password, now play.

Use your teamviewer or anyother similar program to click continue and save game on your desktop.

So many different methods. As my PC and Laptop are both Win7 I use the Remote Desktop feature.

This, Remote Desktop or VNC are probably the best options.

Using the downstairs computer as a server does not solve the underlying problem of the laptop not being able to handle running the game (as a client, it would still have to handle the match engine amongst others).

Id trump stream my game over all those other alternatives.

why? Its made for for that purpose.

You've got it all wrong mate. He wants to let the game run on his quick PC, so it runs quicker, but use his laptop and remote control it.
