In a shop you've not paid anything so you could just not bother going back to buy it (although the more polite thing would be to inform the store so they know they can allocate it to somebody else). Online you can cancel most orders at any point up to it being despatched. Even though you have a right to return it as long as it's returned in it's original condition (un-opened).
