Do people die? (or is that a little to much reality?)

Recommended Posts

I was just reading a thread asking how long you've stayed with one club. Someone said they'd been with a club for like the past 61 years. Now I'm imagining they would be in their eighties (at least) on the game and it made me wonder, do you ever die on this game? Surely at some point you may get poor health and have to quit or have retirement enforced on you.

Then I thought further and wondered whether something so serious should be included in the game. I'm not so bothered about how real the game is, but many people want it as real as possible. I just wondered whether that should ever include health problems or death. I know I'd feel weird if my game suddenly ended saying I'd died of a heart attack aged 62 or something. Or saying I had to take a leave of absence because I had a heart condition that required surgery, as has happened in real life (Joe Kinnear - Health issues) Keith Alexander's untimely death.

It also reminded me of a game many years ago when I was playing a football mangement game aged 10 or 11, in the early nineties. I don't know whether it was an early Championship Manager or something predating it, but I was playing on my friends Atari or Amega (I can't remember which) and all the players names were fictional. I had one striker for Liverpool who banged in nearly 40 goals a season and then suddenly, just before the new season started, I had a message saying he died in a car crash and then all of a sudden I no longer had him. I must say it felt pretty weird just seeing it about this made up character.

But obviously it happens every now any then, with that chap from the league two side dying recently of cancer and players who have had heart problems on the pitch. Would any of these horrible but real aspects ever be bought into the game or is it just way too much reality?

Sorry for this being a little morbid. Originally I was just gonna ask if at some point after 70 odd years, you die of old age (as is only sensible) but it kinda got me thinking about all these other issues and I wondered whether anybody felt anything this realistic should ever be bought into the game.

Some people are acting as though I am campaigning for death in the game. If those people read the post, they would have seen that I myself said that I wasn't too bothered about excessive reality, I would feel weird seeing I'd died on the game. I was merely asking for argued opinions. The only reason I initially asked was because it got me thinking once I read people were in their 60th odd season. I think it's fair enough to not have death in the game, but surely it should force retirement at 75-80.

my post was not directed at you, it was at posts like "They're should be death in the game! This game wants too be realistic! People die in real life. So add it in the game! "

Why should it force retirement though really? Id be very annoyed in a long term save if i had to start with a new manager cause the game retired, in fact i probably would stop playing it, if it limited how long i can go for. Also who says you cant manage at 80, i know of a real life assistant manager in germany who is 76, should he be forced to retire?

Just dont see a need for, in my opinion, stupid options like 'forced retirement' to be added to stop peoples long term managers saves.

No, but I think it's very unlikely you'd be a manager in your 80's and I think by the time you'd done 70 years, I find it odd that you wouldn't want to start again. Having said that, I've been playing my current game for 9 years (game time) and it feels like forever. I don't think I'd ever be able to understand people going for such a long time without getting bored, longest I've ever managed is 15 years.

I totally agree that death needn't be a part of the game, but I do feel there should be a time where you have to retire.

why would it be odd? Why would i want to do 70 years and start over? For me the game doesnt get great until pretty much all the real players are long gone and everyone is a regen/newgen. Maybe a tick box saying "force me to retire are X age" but i doubt anyone would tick it, if you want to retire yourself you just click retire?

You're taking the ****, right?

Again, while FM strives to be realistic as best as it can, at the end of the day it's still a game (or 'simulation', if it wants to be called that). That means in theory it should be allowed to go on as long as it is possible until maybe the computer cannot handle it anymore.

If you happen to read in the CSE Forums, there are experiments that shows how the game develops and evolves after long periods of play time, which SI has said had been useful in the development of future versions.

Players should be allowed to play FM as they deem fit, IMHO.

while we're at it let's get messages to our inbox about terrorist attacks and earthquakes too!

I thought the terror attack thing actually happened?

Someone posted a screenshot of a terrorist attack on a new build stadium that delayed it

http://community.sigames.com/showthread.php/186660-Chelsea-Stadium-under-terror-attack

Found it above and its confirmed as official game inclusion by SI

As for realism.

What is particularly realistic about a 100 year old bouncing up and down the touchline during a match?

At no point does it mention a 'terrorist attack' ;)

Nothing, but you have the option to retire if you wish.

You mean aside from proof that Viagra works? ;)

Anyway, there is death in FM. Countless times on these forums, I've seen people claim their tactics have died. popcorn.gif

That's brilliant. It really made my day. ;)

Just to clarify again:

SI have repeatedly said that, for a number of reasons, death ( whether accidental or natural ) or incidents of high controversy will not be included in the game

IIRC in the first FM which got me in the series (the second one overall), players could be strongly hitten by a decease and retire early. It could sometimes affect very good players. Can somebody confirm ?

IIRC there was a discussion of this before. SI refused obviously(They'll get sued). You see Players won't feel good about dieing even if its a game.

Well in Doom do people sue the creator of the game ? Do players feel bad ?

Anyway, to have a realistic game, we only have to retire at a decent date. Simple as

Death needs too be in the game. Add realism. Someone dies of heart attack, then you need check better on your players condition. This needs to be in the game!

I'm sure people posting pitcures over the internet of David Beckham dieing on FM11 wouldn't got down well with his representatives, or David Beckham himself.

I'm sure there's people on the database who play the game (one of my friends is on the FM database) and i'm sure they wouldn't be over the world if they got a message saying that they callapsed during the match, and died on the way to hospital.

But what do i know, maybe people would like this...

I'm pretty sure David Beckham has other thing to worry about then being dead in a game.

No but why take the risk of legal action? How many players die while on the pitch? or even when they are still at a club? Very very few, so how would this improve the game?

It would improve the game because it will be REALISTIC! It will get the manager more tatical. How can deal with players after a teammate death.

No, not really. As I said, how often do footballers die? The sad case of the Exeter player is about the only player I can think of in recent years, before that Marc Vivien Foe. Very rare, not worth putting in as a feature, and before we know it, loads of people will come on the forum going 'OMG my best player just died, how can I undo this, I'm really ****ed off, not realistic at all!!'.

afced is right! This unfortunately appen with a player of my club Benfica (Miklos Feher had a heartattack and die). That will be very bad. That sucks!!! That don't will be fun because die it will be an injury in the game, and it will appen a lot of times!

It wouldn't improve the game. Not only could the players sue (and some would) but I'm sure if a 9 year old was playing and someone died, the parents would find a way to sue SI. Also it would leave that child distraught I would think. Finally, it wouldn't be fun for the majority of people, if their best player died and they went off form because the team was not dealing with it well.

With regards to the retirement issue, I think that players have the option to retire for a reason, and if you take the age of your manager seriously and find it unrealistic, it is there. Others don't really care about the age, they just want to control teams. And age doesn't really make a difference in the game really:thup:
