Steam Account Hijacked

Recommended Posts

Well I decided to purchase FM10 a few weeks ago and this would be my first FM steam purchase. Well i tried logging in to steam today with no luck. My secret password question didnt match the one I originally gave. Yeah i watched the video how to contact support and submit a ticket etc. But i have decided instead to let the culprit have the account and just be done with this steam crap all together.

I have always tried to keep my pc as secure as possible. In the 13 years I've used an online acct i've had one virus that gave me problems. Now this steam issue that i was very leary of getting into in the first place.

I have cancelled my cc number.

Is the "convience" worth the risk Sega? I say no.

Just another one of those risks associated with digital downloads...

This is one of the main reasons why I have no intention of using Steam any time soon - you wouldn't park your car in the house of a stranger whom you are expected to trust.

YEah, plain will not use Steam as it's not secure, and more to the point it's not ever going to be secure.

Millions of people use it without problems, I've bought there more than 20 games and my account hasn't been stolen in 4 years.

So because you've had a problem you want Sega to not use Steam therefore alienating all the users who quite happily use that format.

Is that not a little selfish?

You must be a kid thats using moms credit card that could care less about financial matters. If there is any type of financial risk involved playing a game I'm out. I really dont care what Sega does with steam in the future my friend..just stating the fact i wont be using it.

@Nottingham Forest: no that was the only fm10 title i had..i have the offline version of 09 and i had already had a few years of league time. so will probably just wait till 11 comes out and purchase on amazon.

DVD all the way for me. Only issue ive ever had is with FM09 with all the activation crap. I didnt have the internet at the time so after buying the game, I then had to phone a premium rate number to get it activated. That wasnt a problem with the DVD itself though so ive never had any problems.

You couldn't be more wrong and as an adult I look after my accounts.

If someone stole your car keys would you just let them have your car? Thats basically what you've done.

No-one forces you to use Steam and its your fault that someone else has gained access to your account.

Nothing to due with the software, all to do with how you act online.

Coming up to 7 YEARS online for me, with no anti-virus or firewall, and yet I've never been infected, had accounts "stolen" or MSN hacked, because I'm not as stupid as alot of people are.

If someone sends me a link I dont recognise, it gets Googled first to double check it's right, doesnt matter if it's someone I know or not.

If you're worried about security in Steam, then don't use the internet at all, it's easier to get your details from your browser.

I would still complain to valve. Its going to take a while probably from what ive read. Just be glad you havent lost an account full of games. Im using steam but only for those games that also support proper offline install. Like fm10 for example :). While you can always try to protect yourself with latest patches and useless anti virus products you will always be vulnerable to dozens of unpatched security holes on your computer.

Bad luck i guess.

BTW: dont forget to reinstall your system or at least scan it thorougly with multiple anti spyware apps. Personally i would backup my data files and reinstall. You can never be sure you cleaned everything.

This problem almost certainly originated on your end. Firewalls and anti-virus are a must for ensuring that nobody can gain access to your computer or install a keylogger that will record your login details.

In addition, proper internet security should be practiced at all times. A handy tip is to have a throwaway email account and a password only associated with that email that you use for setting up accounts on websites, giving your details for certain things etc. etc.

Any password that controls access to any content you own or to Amazon/Play.com accounts that have your credit card details should be unique, long'ish, seemingly random and containing numbers. Stick them in your phone under a false name that you'd remember.

You should also pursue getting your account put back into your control. If you have enough proof that the account is yours (History, timing of purchases, personal details) which I'm sure you do as the account was yours then Steam support will help you out in that regard.

And obviously all of the above advice about googling links before clicking, never giving out personal information that other people shouldn't know (ie. don't tell people your mother's maiden name, the name of your first pet)

Edit: Keeping all memory heavy files (Music, films, photos) as well as installation packages for your favourite programs (IM's, Mail clients, web browsers, anti-virus, anti-spyware, firewalls, itunes, steam etc.) on a removable hard drive is a must for me. Having all of those sitting right there is fantastic as it easily allows me to format my hard-drive regularly without all the pain and bother usually associated with doing that.

Thats a very good tip!

How do you know you've never been infected if you haven't got an anti-virus?

How do you know you've never been infected if you haven't got a anti-virus?

It's generally not hard to tell if you know what you are doing. Most viruses have some form of payload that is visually detectable (i.e. "Buy this anti-virus now!" ads). For those with hard-to-see payloads you can sometimes figure out something is wrong when little things start to happen like focus on windows is temporarily lost or the system slows down dramatically at times.

Rootkits are more difficult of course but then again most anti-virus software won't catch all rootkits anyway.

I don't use anti-virus software - just a firewall and sandboxing software and I don't believe my laptop has caught a virus for a while (it's been years ago since it got infected in fact).

How do you know you've never been infected if you haven't got an anti-virus?

I have a virus scanner that runs once a week. As I study computers (HND in Tech Support this year) I have an above average level of computer knowledge and know how to spot the signs of different "infections" as detailed above.

It's really not that hard to stay safe with some simple rules. :)

*edit* I slightly exaggerated my no firewall statement, I have one built-in to my HomeHub.

I had a similar issue last year. Turned out I was using the wrong username - which I was 10% certain I'd got right.

Steam customer service put me right within about 12 hours.

While I'm obviously sorry that you've been inconvenienced - it's equally important to point out that Steam is only optional so anyone wishing to avoid this type of issue can do so quite simply.

Cheers

Matt

Only 10% certain? Should have gone with the other 90% option

Get your steam ID back, send the creditcard info (not the number) and/or paypal information and the day you bought a steam game, and they will retrieve it for you, it worked for me.

Unfortunately we now live in a world where there are people trying to scam and steal from you at every opportunity. Within the last couple of years, I have had my card cloned after using in a cash machine and my girlfriend accidently left her card at the till in Tesco's and within a day someone had used her card to rack up a load of shopping. We still both use cash machines and Tescos

Just because this has happened to you and on Steam does not mean that any other method is going to be safer or more secure. What about if you go to an independant store and they take the details from your card, or you withdraw the money to pay for it in one of the large supermarkets and there is a clone device. Yes Steam has its security flaws but so does pretty much every transaction you make.

For me Steam is brilliant and will continue using it for as long FM is on there. Installation wherever or whenever, auto updates and no need for a CD.

Well i bought Fm 10 in steam, and i had no problem, well this is the only way i can get the game anyways, because in venezuela they sell the pirate copy of the game and not the original one thats why i use steam but for a year it work fine...

Bollocks!

Using steam for I don't know how many years, have around 100 games installed.

NEVER had a problem with it, EVER!

I hate it when people accusing Steam for their not-secure internet habits.

You don't set your password to 121212

You don't click the links says "Free Porn!"

You don't visit super-mega-uber-upload-file-sharing-download sites.

You don't use warez

You don't let people install things in your PC

You use a good internet security software

another "enlightened " with stupidity

He may not have elaborated too much (I'm not either, I've posted enough about why steam sucks so you can all do a search for me dissing steam if you're that interested) but he's right. Its a sucky system with one of the worst 'support' services I've ever had the pain of dealing with.

The 2 million online users right now say differently.

If things dont work, people won't use them, the problem will almost always be at your end. As for "Support services", that doesnt effect the usefulness of the program.

What support services you need with Steam? Help on how to use the interface?

It does if an error not caused by me stops me playing FM09 2 months before 10 was released. Not impressed.

See above.

Been using steam for 7 years now, not a single problem with it. Never had my account stolen, never had it lock me out for no reason, never infected my computer with anything, never hit me with adverts etc. etc. etc.

The people who have problems with Steam are the same people who have problems turning a computer on or think that their Internet explorer is supposed to look like this...

xpspyware.jpg

Also its extremely sad to see people saying "hackers will steal your account!!!!"... This is not hollywood, the only time you can get your steam account stolen is if you respond to emails or instant messages that trick you into giving them your password.

As such its no different than when the arch prince of Nigeria contacts you and asks for your bank details because he wants to give you millions...

If you are competent with Computers and the Internet you will not have problems with Steam, so stop blaming it when you are the problem not steam.

I have never had any problems with steam, the vast majority of people don't.

I have two steam accounts, one I have been using more recently with a lot of games on, and one dating from whenever Halflife 2 came out that I hadn't used for years. I recently contacted steam to get my password reset on my old account and I found the Steam tech support to be excellent and to respond quickly.

I am sure if you contact them, you should be able to recover your account fairly quickly.

Why is it that sweeping generalisations rule this sub forum? This is patently not true, my problem was caused by their system doing an update and losing all my info. Nada to do with me.

 I have over 30 games on Steam and never once my account or any account of mine infact has been 'hijacked'.

I do not have an antivirus, theres no point in one in my opinion.

Use a strong password, my password is like 17 characters long with numbers and dashes etc.

People underestimate this quite often. All it takes for someone to gain access is your username, and brute force their way in via a combination of attacks, either dictionary, wordlists or other. You would be surprised what silly passwords people use and then wonder how their accounts have been compromised.

Use a combination of characters, upper and lower cases, and best of all, a couple of words.

Better still, don't use words at all, just a combination of letters and numbers, both upper and lower case.
