Surely you must have enjoyed seeing Kovac falter?" I replied, "I wouldn't say it was enjoyment." And then I get this in my inbox: Why is (or seems to be) he unhappy? For what its worth i think he's unhappy because even though you said "I wouldn't say its enjoyment", it still seems that you're hinting that you're happy about his bad performance.
