So lets say teams like Bayern Munich, Schalke, Werder Bremen do well in CL like go to Semi Finals and Final. While Serie A teams do crap like Inter, AC Milan, Roma, Juventus don't make into semi final 5 years. Do poor in group stages. Lets say those things happens for 5 years. Not too often because the fixed league reputation [and the overratedness of Italian clubs/players] will prevent for major changes, but it can happen.
