Hi All,

I am delighted to announce that we are giving these forums a long overdue lick of paint.

I’m sure you’ll like it too and appreciated the improve aesthetics and design.

The challenge we laid down to ourselves was to create something that felt fresh and vibrant and that had better consistency throughout. We really wanted to make the focus of the forums on the posts you create and make the quality of your content stand out.

So we have cleaned things up and reduced the clutter as well as integrated some of the social networking sites that we work with and we are really pleased with what we have come up with.

But we haven’t thrown every concept away – you’ll still find popular areas such as FML, FM or OTF have their own look and feel, just so you know where you are when you’re browsing and posting.

So – when is this coming? It’s coming tomorrow and to prepare you for the new look, you can get a sneak peek of it here:

Forum Preview 1 (http://www.sigames.com/newforum/1.png)

Forum Preview 2 (http://www.sigames.com/newforum/2.png)

Our research team have actually been testing the new design for many weeks now on their private forums, but as ever, we look forward to hearing your feedback once it’s up and running, so feel free to post here.

Cheers,

The Sports Interactive Team

This isn't a "pick the skin you prefer" type thing?

I feel like if you could let people pick between them, you'd get less complaints. Something about the new skin is bugging me, I'm just not sure what it is.

The screenshots lack content, so it doesn't do the new look and feel proper justice.

Wait and see tomorrow and you might be surprised. I'm certainly looking forward to the switchover because in my opinion, the new design is a lot better and usable than the tired one we have right now.

Any new powers for us ;)?

And is the forum going to be down? If yes, can we sneak in and have a party?

Avatars and sigs just clutter things up.

Though a one-line, no gfx allowed sig would be nice.

Yes you get to fly and wear your underpants over your trousers. Also you now have both heat- and meat-vision.
But the downside is that you are now vulnerable to Kryptonite.

I think it looks very nice. It's always nice to get a refreshing new look. I always do this myself with my FM game. I am forever changing the skin every couple of weeks to keep the game looking fresh. Nice job SI.

It's not going to mess up the old posts like the last changeover did?

IIRC, the last changeover was from one forum software to another, hence the balls up with the posts and usernames. Think this is just part of a vBulletin update, so all should be OK

Are we going to be able to keep the current skin?

I love the current skin as the vast majority of the screen is given to displaying posts, and as a result they take up a small amount of vertical space and you get a lot of posts visible on your screen at any one time.

Gotta say, if you don't give us the option of choosing the current one then I for one will be very dissappointed.

If SI are upgrading to the next version of vBulletin, this skin may not be available so it may not be possible without a load of extra work.

There are no plans for avatars or signatures.

We hope to merge them at some point, but it's unlikely that will happen today.

I love the current skin as the vast majority of the screen is given to displaying posts, and as a result they take up a small amount of vertical space and you get a lot of posts visible on your screen at any one time.

Gotta say, if you don't give us the option of choosing the current one then I for one will be very dissappointed.

The new version of vBulletin doesn't support the existing skin and we have no plans at this time to recreate it.

It's always tricky with any major change, because lots of people use the site and we all have different preferences. But we're confident that the new design will be well received by the majority. It's impossible to please everyone.

Will this be early tomorrow or what?

Pretty excited tbh.

It should be done at some point this morning.

Are the forums going to be down during the changeover period?

Also, just Google'd the "Lorem Ipsum Dolor Sit Amet", quite an interesting read on Wiki about it.

There is likely to be some downtime, but it shouldn't be too long.

White space left in deliberately to highlight the amount of space saved which is always a plus.

Thanks for the suggestions. You're seeing a sneak preview of the design. That space is actually reserved for images and messaged for the various games.

I think the new look is way too bright. Will probably get caught at work now. The current colour scheme is much better imo.

There will still be different colour schemes in different areas of the forum. The sneak preview shows the generic form. FM and FML for example, will have slightly different variations, just like it works now really.

WOW. I really hate this new skin. Here's why (instead of the usual I dont like it and no other reasons)

1. Its harder to see which threads you have posted in have new posts in them.

2. When you do find these threads, you cant tell which posts are the new ones.

3. Everything looks to big and bulky. Somebody leaves a one line post and there is room underneath for about another eight lines of text. no need for it.

4. I dont know if this has been changed as I havent been logged in long enough but I really hope the stupid log in again thing after not breathing for 2 minutes has been removed. Its really annoying to keep logging in.

Personally, i feel it's a bit too white. A bit bright for my taste: I find it's making picking out topics of interest harder, not easier as perhaps was intended. Also navigation to sub forums should be addressed again, i feel it's a bit of a hinderence to only have the drop down box. I like a list page :)

peter-evo
06-07-2010, 17:52
The only thing I'm glad about is the way they didn't do avatars. But you have to feel, with each post being made so long that you could often fit another 7 lines of text into them, you may as well add avatars.

Hate how I can't see the quick reply box, just a mass of white with an ugly grey thing chilling on the sides. Surely after the way people begged for a darker skin on FM, a long with the way the most popular downloaded skins are indeed darker, you'd have maybe not made it snow white. Genuinely hurting my eyes typing this. :(

I like the new skin but i would prefere the bar with the date and post number to be darker to clearly define each post. Scrolling through at speed and you cannot tell where one post ends and the next begins!
Could also use more space either side and get rid of the amount of wasted space in each post box.

But overall its fresh and new and i like it. It is like the default light skin on FM 10

Where's the drop down thing at the bottom of threads to go back to the Forum's thread page? Now I have to scroll all the way up to go back to the main page. The damn link is right at the top, a long way to scroll.

Where's the "Last page" link for threads with pages and pages of posts? Now we just have a stupid number.

The fonts are so small, it's so hard to read. Not to mention the colour scheme (Bright blue on white?!)

Can I just say it took me an age to find the quick reply box because of all the whiteness. The font is so small in the quick reply box. Where on earth has just the boldness for moderators gone? What happened to the decent smileys? What is with all this wasted space? This is going to take the pages longer to load now. I will carry my rant on later once my eyes recover from all this whiteness

It feels a bit 'in your face'.

One problem for a start is that alternative posts/threads (i.e. Post/thread 1,3,5,7,9 with a grey background. 2,4,6,8,10 in a white background) are not in a different background colour, so everything molds into one. Makes it incredibly difficult to differentiate

Just found a bug. If I click on the number of posts in a thread to get the list of posters, then click on the number to get a list of that person's posts, I get a list of threads started by that person instead of a list of posts by that person in that thread.

I hope that makes sense.

I fully understand the need for updates on forum software. However, I think some things need to be altered a bit.

1. The white. Come on. I know white is white, but a forum doesn't need to be this much white.
2. Too much space-waste. The 2 darkgrey columns at each side could easily be minimized and the space allocated for each forum user name etc could also be smaller.
3. Its nearly impossible to see which threads that you have posted in. That green 'check' icon could be made bigger.

tenthreeleader
06-07-2010, 18:51
Formatting-wise, I would call this look unfortunate.

I'm sitting here at my desk trying to find a display font that won't run a longer thread title into the page jumps at the top of each thread, and those of us who post tables on our corner of the forum are going to have to reformat and repost a lot of our work if we don't happen to choose Courier New as our display font.

I also can't see my logout link at the top since there seems to be a line break that drops it into the white space that I can't find or alter through my sizing options in my browser. Firefox doesn't seem to like this very much.

Perhaps some of the issues generated on this thread will be fixable through workarounds, but one thing that can't be changed is the white background. My eyes aren't what they used to be and at my age, I'm looking for something a bit easier on them since I spend so much time keeping my young ones in line in FMS :D

Awful change. Looks like a cheap blog.

This forum skin is more likely to discourage content than encourage it. There was nothing wrong with the old one from my point of view, other than perhaps a lack of sub forums in Tactical and Training Tips.

I don't imagine it is going to be much fun wrestling with this tiny interface when trying to post guides or start tactical discussions.

Major thumbs down from me.

Way, way too white.
The blue margins too wide, in fact it's quite unnecessary and the old format was better and gave room for some very well laid out posts.
The central area doesn't have enough contrast between the different sections.
And there's the awful picture blowout as mentioned.

Logging off now - headache coming!

EDIT - Just looking at the main PC/MAC General Discussion part of the forum where the threads are listed. The pale blue stickys look quite good but when you go down to the plain white boxes with the thread titles they look terrible and seem to run into one.

I really don't like the fixed width of this, at least with a different color for the edges past the fixed width. The reason I don't notice it as much on something like facebook is that it's the same color. The grey on the edges makes my eyes move to look at it instead of at the posts. I would prefer a more muted white or an off-white. I use the computer to get away from the sun, not look at it.

I prefer the blue of the twitter feed or of usernames as opposed to the really light blue of most of the rest of it.

While I really appreciate the work put into this, and may just be complaining for the sake of complaining, I really feel like those changes would help the look and feel of the forum.

Why has SI got an obsession with polish this past year. They say you can't polish a turd. Im afraid this polish has turned this into a turd.

Im sure there is enough feedback now to know that we dont want this. Will it be acted upon?

Please change the function that logs you out every time you go for a crap. None of the other forums I use seem to do this. A totaly useless function and a waste of everybodies time.

And another thing. I tried to submit and guess what? It wouldnt let me post because ive logged in again but in a different window. This never happened with the previous layout. Once you logged back in, the other pages would simply carry on as normal.

staff guys,

It is an improvement over the old one.

HOWEVER SAYING THIS

The reason I think many (myself included) cannot stand this is because it is too bright.

White does not work at all.

If you changed it to a light grey (or preferably, to a dark skin and have white text) it would help it tremendously.

Its just that you have this white screen and it hurts to look at it. The borders don't help it out, either.

So how to fix (imo) - white goes to dark dark navy. Black goes to white. The light blue stays the same. The buttons can stay the same. This light grey on large amounts of white doesn't work at all.

Okay so we're back! We're aware of little issues here and there, but generally this is it! Woo-hoo and all that! :)

The one real complaint I have about the current skin is that the actual display area is far too narrow. This isn't really a problem in many areas of the forum, it just looks a bit odd as each post takes up a lot more lines than it used to, but it seems really out of place in the story forums, where there are large blocks of text.

How difficult would it be for there to be a wide version of this skin made available. All it would need to change is the width of the display area. It would make it a lot easier for those who spend plenty of time in the story area, such as me, as I read almost every story on the go at the moment and having just read through a few updates on the new skin is really quite difficult and unpleasant as you get so few words on a line compared to on the previous version.

Awful imo :(

Too white/bright and anaemic;
Too narrow;
No alternate post shading to distinguish between posts;
On the main forum display your selections aren't remembered when you collapse/hide forums. I collapse FML, go into OTF, go back to the main page and FML is taking up space again;
Side panel user profiles are the same colour as the post area - could do with being a shade or two darker;
Smilies? SMH - they're woeful;
Posts in random areas of the forum (esp. OTF) are emboldened;
It looks 'cheap' and unfinished whereas the old one looked professional.

Could we at least have the option to use the old skin?

I agree layout is shocking, and fixed width sucks, but on the whole suspect that most visitors are too busy engaging in FM chat to bother voting on forum skins so 88.24% merely reflects the small percentage of today's visitors who took the opportunity to have 3 seconds of limelight-laden bandwagon jumping.

It'll pass. It always does.

To add to my earlier points - it's also horrendously slow in comparison to the old version. Each segment of the skin appears to load separately.

Complete farce of an update, you might try asking those of us that actively use the website to help others out that are suffering because of your awful and horrific gameplay manuals if we like the idea or not.

I honestly cannot see where the superificial benefit of making SI look up-to-date and professional or whatever comes from, but I can tell you right now that the practical benefit of the website to post guides, images, and easilly discuss football has been seriously harmed.

I am not blowing my own trumpet but I am one of the most active and appeciated contributors to Tactics and Training Tips currently posting on this website. I have joined up with several other posters to work on producing guides and utilities to make this game easier to understand and easier to enjoy, and I am currently involved with another well respected member of T&TT to produce another, in my opinion, excellent and fundamental guide to understanding and playing this game on its own terms.

The ability to produce at the very least decent material on this website has been seriously hampered. Images posted look farcical, guides written are significantly longer than they should be. Everything written and discussed now appears for everyone like a wall-of-text.

I doubt any non-staff member that contributes material to the practically useful areas of this forum is going to have anything positive to say about this update. It is destructive to T&TT material and therefore counter-productive to this website as a whole.

I have been here long enough to see individuals like Millie and WWFan no longer post regularly, for whatever reasons. I have seen many other very intelligent and enlightening posters leave due to the atmosphere. I myself have refused to get upset due to criticism and complaints and insults and moderating standards and continued to post regular and well received tactical and training material.

I have already seen one rather "thick skinned" and respected contributor and debate-engager threaten to leave and I myself deeply question the ability for this forum to present material in an easy to read, easy to view, easy to understand format.

I consider it very likely that this update will see an exodus of high quality contributors, for the first time actively caused by the forum itself. This update is an inferior enviroment for contribution of informative detail, it is an enviroment that I personally no longer think is adequate for my own contributions, it is an environment that those others whose contributions I respect and enjoy have already said is detrimental to their own enjoyment of discussion and are therefore likely to leave.

This is a seriously poor choice, a seriously poor "update". Most of those that contribute rather than consume information in the T&TT forum, which is one of the few practically relevant forums on this website, have expressed not only their distaste but their intentions of reducing their contributions and becoming more active on other FM websites.

I count myself amongst those, especially if they choose to leave first.

I think whoever is involved in this "update" should seriously reconsider it's impact on the ability for forum members to contribute information that is not simply helpful but often decisive in the other users enjoyement of the game.

In short you have seriously undermined the function of the T&TT forum, therefore undermining the practical function of this website.

It is an FML style decision that has hit home in the bread-and-butter of Football Manager itself. No discussion, no debate, just action and then consequences that were unforeseen and completely counter-productive.

For a studio that is supposed to take time to engage it's customers, this is yet another serious question mark on your understanding of your community.

I'm with SFraser on this one. This change is really going to have a negative effect on my favourite forums (particularly T&T and Career Updates). The forum is now blocky, bulky, slow to load, difficult to navigate and horrible to look at. The forum has gone from being accessible, functional and easy to use, to an utter disaster to be honest.

It's actually so bad that I probably won't use the forum as much as I used to unless there are dramatic changes. I can't really understand the need for this update as the forum was pretty much perfect before.

This new forum is really frustrating to use. It's actually hard work to navigate and to load up threads. It's also much slower than the previous version.

I strongly dislike the margins and the bright white background colour. In addition to this, any tables and screenshots posted on the forum now look ridiculous.

It's all very disappointing. :(

I have to say I'm really not a fan of this. It makes everything difficult to read and it generally looks horrible. Maybe if could be replaced with something less painful on the eyes (like a light grey instead of the blinding white background) and structured so that everything wasn't so difficult to see?

I can see it putting off a lot of the more casual users of the forum (myself included) as it makes it unpleasant to use.

I know that the majority of users do dislike the new skin but I do have high hopes that the guys that run the place will pay attention to the suggestions people have made and will act upon them.

I just want to say that one thing a lot of people on this forum need to learn is that if you want a good response then it is much better if you are polite and reasonable. I had an exchange of PMs with Neil (Brock) and was very pleased with the reply I got from him, and hopefully it does show that they are listening to polite feedback.

This was the exchange in question:

"Hi.

I thought I would PM this to you as there is more of a chance of you seeing it.

Thanks for your time,

Alex. "

"Cheers for the quick message, it's something I'll certainly pass along to the design team (along with all the other suggestions being made on the forums) and I'm sure they'll take it into account. Thanks for that Alex.

Neil "

So guys, please stop whining about the skin and being negative, if you want anything to be done about it then you need to start being polite and giving some constructive feedback, rather than just moaning about what you don't like.

Too much space in the vertical length of the posts themselves due to allocated avatar space that isn't used.

Heading space of General Discussion takes up far too much room, have to scroll down before even seeing the first thread.

Thread titles in replies to posts (RE: New Forum Skin) should be included in the date and time shaded header of the post.

Too big a gap above and below thread names when looking at the list of threads.

The multiple content types advanced search doesn't have the variety of options as the single content type. Most annoying one being showing results as posts rather than threads.

Quick links needs a "today's post" or "latest posts" so that when the forums are marked as read you can still see the latest posts easily.

Bookmarks at the bottom of the page should be spread out horizontally isntead of underneath each other.

Too much empty blue space in the very top title bar next to the SI Icon.

Page numbers need to have a "visited link" colour for pages you've read, and also easily show what page number you are currently on.

Reply to thread should be underneath the thread name.

Background colour should not be white.

I feel i must cry

Our Clan thread which was started on October 2009 and is still being updated and is the most posted online clan thread on SI has suddenly been ruined by this upgrade as all the hard work contributed to it by the clan members over the months now looks awful as the images uploaded just do not fit anymore onto the forum.

Link is here - http://community.sigames.com/showthread.php?161440-Premiership-Glory-2010-Clan-Thread/page5 -

Please Please Please do something to help us get this back to normal so we can continue to post updates on our Online game up until FM11 and beyond.

Thanks

It's always tricky with any major change, because lots of people use the site and we all have different preferences. But we're confident that the new design will be well received by the majority. It's impossible to please everyone.

I understand that but choosing the brightest colours possible wasn't such a good idea. Changing the graphics of buttons and links didn't help either. All in all this is probably the most hard to read undistinguishable and cluttered looking forum I've used in the last 15 years or so, I really hoped we had all moved on to better designs in this day and age.

Also there is a bunch of poor features that really needs fixing.
Like the fact that the there is no link in sight at the bottom of a page to get back to the forum you where reading because the scroll list doesn't allow for direct clicking (as it used to). This will mean that most users will use the "Top" button and then use the links at the top. Discounting the annoyance it brings us users it will also mean twice the amounts of clicks/re-loads to get back to the forum you where reading, is that really a good thing to do to your site???

Or like the fact that the text size (and writing area) when replying is tiny as hell (in addition to it's brightness). Again this will not only bring annoyance but surely also a lot more mistakes with spelling and readability that also might lead to more re-loads of pages.

And not forgetting the fact that to be able to post using the "advanced" mode while quoting someone you have to click on both the "reply to thread" button and the "go advanced" button (if you "go advanced" directly the quotes are left out). That really is one of the stupidest changes I've seen in a long time, it freaking worked before!

I could also mention the needless changed of smiles to some of the most unnoticeable and boring ones on any forum I currently use. If you don't want us to use them then just say so and be done with them and save us from these lame misfits.

Have to agree with the naysayers - this new skin is neither fresh, nor vibrant.

Unfortunately I have to agree too. It is bright and only bright, not good at all IMO.

Gotta say, if you don't give us the option of choosing the current one then I for one will be very dissappointed.

As has been said, using the old skin is probably not doable. BUT it certainly is possible to allow users to choose between different skins if SI wanted to but for some reason they never have in the past so unfortunately I don't think we'll get to use that feature now either.

Anyone else notice how there are 8 sub forums for the bugs section and ZERO for Tactics and Training Tips?

All displayed in full glory on the first forum page. Well done SI, your community and media managers have done you proud.

As newb that doesn't own the game, I now know exactly where to go first. Clever stuff.

The only conceivable way to magnify this utter faux pas would be to bury TACTICS TIPS under the Skinning and Editor forums. Oh wait....

Could you put together a worse forum layout?

Exactly. It doesnt make sense that they would choose this colour scheme given all the negative feedback of the light skin in the game. Either the top brass at SI arent listening or the head has been replaced by George W Bush.

I've been logged in for 20 minutes. So far, these are the problems I've come across...

1. The log in box being half obscured by the blue header at the top of the page. I had to click 'reply to thread' to get the 'you are not logged in' message and log in that way.

2. I am on a netbook, and the new screen is far too wide. I need to scroll from one side of the screen to the other just to read the whole of one message.

3. I fixed this by adjusting the zoom level from 125% to 100%. Now the font is too small.

4. The white is giving me a headache.

5. Why is there no 'quick navigation' at the top of the page?

6. The speed. 'Nough said.

I haven't ventured out of the threads yet, but I have to say, I really hope SI change it back. To say it's been a train wreck is an understatement, and it's hasn't been up that long. All you need to do is look at the poll in OTF to know everyone was far happier with the old one. It's not just a dislike of change, as people have actually listed their problems. The old one was working, we all loved it, and if something ain't broke, don't fix it.

PS. I do, however, agree with not introducing rep power.

I love the SI will just stand by this, too proud to change it back. Sort of admirable in a way.

Change it back by morning and brush it under the carpet is the best thing to do imo.

Ha ha ha ha, just found a new bug.

If you use the multi quote feature in a thread and then posts a reply to those and then at a later time comes back to the thread the quoted posts comes up with any new posts you choose to multi quote at that time. That could get VERY tedious in bigger threads.:mad::rolleyes:

I actually quite like it. There are some things I really don't like (e.g. the grey bars on the side, the way images are handled), but I can't help but feel some people are overreacting slightly. It's just a new skin. It just takes a bit of getting used to (and hopefully cleaning up some of the graphical issues pointed out by other users).

The number of people saying that the white gives them a headache is slightly odd. How do people cope with Google? Or eBay? Or Amazon? Or any number of sites with lots of white on them.

The number of people saying that the white gives them a headache is slightly odd. How do people cope with Google? Or eBay? Or Amazon? Or any number of sites with lots of white on them.

Mainly because

1) They use a white that's easier to the eye (yes there are different shades of white), a more glossy one instead of this industrial, matte look.

2) They contrast it with different colours that match well. eBay and Amazon has dark gray, dark blue and darkish orange/yellow that isn't too jarring, while Google keeps it simple with dark blue text.

You never pair bright colours with bright colours, like we have here with bright blue on white. I mean, that is common sense.
