Team gelling over time

I have a young squad that is good enough, talentwise, to get to the playoffs at least, but 12 of them came in the summer transfer market, and midtable safety is looking likely this season.

If I didn't sign anyone new in the next transfer window, giving this squad more playing time together, would they improve as a team? Or does the game engine not work like that?
