How the Ranking system works?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I'd like to know how points are distributed in the world ranking system as well as others'.

I'm playing Italy in 10.3 for 5 seasons now. They have been on winning streak from qualifications of Europe 2012 till the loss at Semi-final against Portugal. Two years later, the team is qualified for the world cup 2014 and won the trophy. I lost only 7 matches (36 won, 12 drawn). Comparing to other national team, the record is quite impressive. The world ranking system however does not think so. I've just dropped 2 places to 3rd place (lost about more than 400pts) in the last month despite I won 1 and drew 1 (against the second place team) in Euro 2016 qualification.

Any idea about what influence this ranking system?

I have the same question for the european club coefficient too.

Thanks !

Thanks for the wiki link! That explains a few things but I wonder how accurate it is in the game.

So following the latest FIFA ranking formula:

100x(match.point x match.status x opposition.strength x opposition regional weight)

I'm going to do a simple math exercise with Italy's two last Euro 2016 qualification matches in that month.

Italy - Bosnia n Herz.: 0 - 0

Italy - Switzerland: 3 - 0

rankingd.png

In June, before the matches: Italy: rank 1st. 1883pts, Bosnia n Herz: rank 18th 922pts, Switzerland: rank 25th 806pts

Also, it's worth noting that

France: ranked 2nd: 1737pts

Spain: ranked 3rd: 1682pts

Portugal: ranked 4th: 1649pts

Match vs Bosnia n Herz. ranked 18th: Draw

Match point: 1

Match status: 2.5

Opposition Strength: (200-18)/100=1.82

Regional Strength: 1 (both teams are in the same region)

100x(1x2.5x1.82x1)= 455

Match vs Switzerland: rank 25th: Win

Match point: 3

Match status: 2.5

Opposition Strength: (200-25)/100=1.75

Regional Strength: 1 (both teams are in the same region)

100x(3x2.5x1.75x1)= 1312.5

So, after two matches, Italy would naturally gain 455 + 1213.5 = 1767.5 points.

France, Spain and Portugal were also having matches and they all won against their opponents.

June 6th:

France - Lithuania(109th): 2 - 0 (Euro Qual.); Spain - Scotland(17th): 1 - 0 (Friendly); Portugal - Cyprus (59th): 2 - 0 (Euro Qual.)

June 10th:

France - Scotland (17th): 2 - 0 (Euro Qual.); Spain - Finland(28th): 4 - 0 (Euro Qual.); Portugal - Estonia(84st): 3 - 0 (Euro Qual.)

After the above calculation, France should gain 100x(3x2.5x0.91x1) + 100x(3x2.5x1.83x1) = 2055. Spain: 100x(3x1x1.83x1)+100x(3x2.5x1.72x1)= 1839. Portugal: 100x(3x2.5x1.41x1)+100x(3x2.5x1.16x1)= 1927.5=1928

Therefore, at the following world ranking: Italy should have 1768. France: 2055. Spain: 1839. Portugal:1928.

But...

So am I missing something here?

You're taking it that the rankings only represent the last two matches played by the nation? The scores for matches played over the last twelve months are averaged and rounded to the nearest whole number. The score can also drop if matches played just on the brink of 12, 24, 36 or 48 months ago were played longer ago than that by the time of the second rankings. Matches played in the last 12 months are given a multiplier of x1.0, 12-24 of x0.5, 24-36 of x0.3 and 36-48 of x0.2.

Thanks! That makes more sense. Too bad I could not catch on all the match details of these nations with their ranking and their opponent's at the time to do an exact calculation.

Anyway, could you tell just by looking at their match results? Number of wins, losses... match status ?

Something like...

Spain: 16

Lost: 2 friendlies, 2 wc finals

Win: 5 wc finals, 2 friendlies, 5 euro qualification

Italy: 16

Lost: 2 friendlies.

Draw: 2 Euro Quals.

Win: 7 wc finals, 2 Friendlies, 3 euro quals.

Something like that?
