How do you choose a good Assistant Manager? What attributes are vital?

Recommended Posts

I am at the top of the Championship (joined Wigan a month ago) but not happy with my assistant.

I'm thinking the following are the most important in an Assistant Manager

1) Tactical Ability

2) Judging Player Ability

3) Man Management Ability

Any thoughts?

Thanks

I look for:

Man Management

Tactical Knowledge

Judging Player Potential

Judging Player Ability

Level of Discipline

Motivation

It took me until 2030 to find an Assman with a minimum of 15 of those attributes. Definately hard to come by, will definately need to sacrifice your searching. I guess you could take out LoD and Motivation if you do it yourself but those are the key things I look for.

Just get Pat Rice  Your search is over.

But also for lower teams (which you are), Martin Keown makes a brilliant Assistant Manager  Take a look.

It depends what you want from your ass man but nbuk's list looks good to me.

Judging player potential and ability is obviously extremely useful for identifying signings.

If you looking to utilise him as a coach then obviously you want good determination, discipline and motivating along with a high specialised stat (or stats) and if you want good advice and/or him to manage your reserves/youth or 1st team when you are on holiday, then high tactical knowledge and man management.

Basically, high everything :D

A general all around solid profile is the first step.

Both the player judgement stats are a good way to go as your ass man is the guys that's going to be judging your squad for you.

I like to follow this up with motivation and discipline and have him manage the reserves.

I tend to manage at lower levels so a coach that stands out in the above is what I'd go for. The higher I manage then it has to be more of a case to get someone with a good range of stats, especially tactical knowledge for those match tactics.

In an ideal world, I'd look at determination, judging PA/CA, motivation, discipline, working with youth, man management and one coaching stat (goalies, technical, etc.) being 15+, but it's rare to find a guy with all those stats unless you're at really top level I'd imagine.

I don't put as much importance on my ass man these days though, he used to be a super coach, but in more recent FM's I just send the best JPA/CA-rated coach/scout out to scout signings.

As long as you have a coach or scout with a high JPA/CA stat (preferably 20, though again that is dependant on your club rep), I'd rely solely on him for scouting, then perhaps concentrate on getting the other listed stats for your ass man.

Man Management - Press Confrences

Tactical Knowledge - Tactical advice during the match

Motivation - Team talks

Judging Player Potential & Ability - Exactly what it says on the tin

Determination/ Motivation & Discipline - Mental attributes towards coaching players

I Know it's cheating, but I always pick a famous name/respected ex-footballer and change their attributes accordingly. (Not all 18/19/20's mind you)

It's a shame some great players retire to become coaches with few attributes over 10 :(

Yes, I also edited my retired star striker as he had no stat above 10 but I wanted him at the club. Gave him a big salary to relieve my bad conscience.
