After what I would call a success at Dafuge's demo challenge, I've finally found some time to start the challenge for real. I would have liked to have started with a team with a lower reputation but seeing as how I actually support AFC Wimbledon, I don't think I could bare to be anyone else!

Bah, who was I kidding? holidaying right now.

Im considering giving myself a break, by grabbing a higher rated team - possibly even one with a squad!

guess I better contemplate it while I holiday...

Kings Lynn - Dec 08 - Conf North

Well im half way through the 1st season so thought i would do a little update. Ive really surprised myself at how well we have done although i do think if i pick up a few injuries ill quickly drop down the league.

I havent done very well in the cups being knocked out in my 1st game in all 3 competitions but not too bothered about them.

Finances are looking good, mainly due to the fact that im only paying out £2100 a week in wages which is £200 under budget and im getting crowds of between 1500 and 2000 for every home game.

best performance (http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/dd178/mattyisalegend/bestwin.jpg)

supersub (http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/dd178/mattyisalegend/barron.jpg)

I just hope the 2nd half of the season is as good as the 1st and hopefully if i can bring a goalscorer in ill be able to make the playoffs.

Current league position 5th http://community.sigames.com/customicons/icon14.gif.

We've struggled a little with our away form and I worked out what was wrong. I must have changed my away tactics to ultra-attacking at some point, and actually saved them like that by mistake. I've been playing an ultr-attackin style away from home http://community.sigames.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_mad.gif.

All becomes clear.......

Wood 2 Banbury 3.
Wood 2 Braintree 6.

Has being overbudget so much affected your board's confidence yet?

I'm not far into the season yet, but I'm already hearing rumblings of disatisfaction. I'm worried that I'll be sacked for bad budget management, regardless of how well the team is performing. http://community.sigames.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif </div></BLOCKQUOTE>

no it has not affected my board's confidence it right in center as it has been all season and I'm 4th up to now in later december

Chelmsford-End of season update 09/10-Conference
Well after bein written off by the media and predicted to finish 23rd we somehow managed to win promotion to the football league.

Play-off final (http://img135.imageshack.us/img135/6802/promotionre6.png)

Top scorer Dennis Oli got the winner with his 30th goal of the season. Along with El Zhar they have been the reason weve done so well.

League Table (http://img511.imageshack.us/img511/8428/tableko8.png)
League positions (http://img511.imageshack.us/img511/9978/graphcd1.png)

As the graph shows we were near the top for most of the season and didnt really have a bad run of form. Got a feeling i'll struggle in league two, wish me luck!

Its all gone wrong. very very wrong.

Starting the new season, and i have friendly's lined up. Not exactly the hardest games in the world, yet... the following has happened.

Halesowen 2 - 7 Leek Town
Halesowen 0 - 4 Willenhall (2 Reds for me)
Halesowen 3 - 6 Kidderminster (1 Red for me)

so, like i said, not the hardest games. And what makes matters worse is, on player got sent off on both games, so hes gonna be suspended for AGES....

Chippenham End of Season update 2008/2009

IMO the 1st season is the worst especially seeing as I only started with 4 youth players and loads of greys!!

Transfers In (http://s182.photobucket.com/albums/x147/freelinet/?action=view&current=Transfers1.jpg)

I decided to go for some experience with Gayle and Mooney unfortunatly the latter turned out to be a bit of a plum http://community.sigames.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif .
Still I had to be happy with the fact that I didn't spend any transfer money so I got £0 left to spend. http://community.sigames.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Parent Clubs.

It took 3 attempts of me asking until my board caved in and offered me:
Bristol Rovers
Bristol City
Forest Green

No surprise that I chose Bristol City.

How did I do?

After plenty of ups and downs throughout the season and considering I was predicted to finish 21st I was quite happy with my final league position- BS South Table 2008/2009 (http://s182.photobucket.com/albums/x147/freelinet/?action=view&current=Season1.jpg)

Monthly Update- August 2009: Stamford Blue Square Premier

Just a quick update on my progress thus far in the premiership.

I sit an ominous 13th (but I cant say I wont be happy with that at the end of the season) on the back of some pretty lucky results. It appears my tactic of 10 men behind the halfway line and one striker works well against the bigger teams. Result of the month:

Stamford 1 v 0 York

Player wise I have released some of the players I signed initially in june to fee up some wage. Currently in the process of signing a regen from, yes, Monserrat.

Goal wise Howe, Savage and Hindmarch continue to hit the mark and new signing Rae is looking forward to getting his chance.

Player of the month is goalkeeper Veiga who has kept me in every single game with great performances!

Ok. Im getting Pi$$ed off now.

In my last 4 Friendly's i've had....

4 Reds (Two players twice)
12 Yellows
6 Goals Scored
19 Goals Conceeded

And i dont know why. I'm doing not much different from last year, but my players are having no shots, my target man no longer has the same amount of headers he usually has (usually between 15 and 30 a game, in the last 4 matches he's totalled 18 attempted headers) and im getting battered by teams with worse quality than me.

I've STRENGTHENED my team over the summer, with 3 new defenders all rated better than my current lot, a couple of midfileders and a forward, ALL rated better than who i had before, but my team has fallen apart.

On top of that, im £150k in the red, and the board are 'Angry' that i've done nothing about this. How am i supposed to make money on a wim?

On the only bright note, they are 'Extreemly happy' that im well within my wage budget.

This is SO much harder than FM07 ....

NepentheZ. Are you comparing this season to your first season in FM08, or this season (FM08) to last season (FM07)?

If it is the latter then I know exactly what you mena as it wa my first impression too.

I would suggest that you watch a full match and it should shed some light on the subject.

What I found was that if I tried to use the Target man tactic that bought me success in FM07, then my target Man would not be able to challenge often enough for the ball because the quality of the balls to him, (and his lack of ability), meant that he just wasn't getting near enough to the ball.

What I have done is reduce the passing levels right down, but still play Targget man instructions to head. This seems to be working.

Has anybody else experienced this sort of player unhappyness? (http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff262/paulsgruff_fm/unhappyplayer.jpg) I signed the guy knowing that he would easily be my best centre back and he got unhappy after a few games, morale went right down - but I carried on playing him and he has now notched up 46 appearances this season and seems to be intending to retire http://community.sigames.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_confused.gif

Any suggestions on how I can get him to change his mind? As I say he is only 22 and by far my best centre back.

paulsgruff. Is he on a part-time contract? I think he believes he's not a professional either because he's only on a part-time contract or because he's at a semi-pro clun.

Im comparing it to my first season in FM08. My target man was getting 15-30 attempted headers a game. now, he barely makes 5 - 10. Over the summer, my team seems to have lost ability to play football. Like i say, ive strengthened the team, i've now changed tactic for my last friendly of the pre-season, if this fails, ill go back to the target man and tweak... but who knows what will happen. I have a strong feeling that come the end of this season, i wont be in a job any more...

Ah ok this could be it (it seems I didn't interpret the happiness correctly), yeah I'm still semi-pro amd he is on a part time contract. I have him tied down to a 5 year deal, but his morale hasn't ever got above 'poor' since his state of mind changed like this - which was back in September and I am now in May.

Also now he has got unhappy he refuses to discuss a full time contract. Is he likely to improve in happiness (praising his performances hasn't helped at all) or should I just be looking at offloading him do you think? I've got several players disliking him now, which is annoying considering he is the only player here that is classed as League 2 standard in coach reports.

Ok. I got here and found only six youngsters more concern with acne, playstation and malls than playing football. I went to every gas station, burger place and jail and found some 'players' that at least know how to wear an uniform and follow orders. Skills? Forget about it. Determination? Only in my dreams. Ambition? Wrong number.

Of course awful preseason. Everybody out of shape and a couple players maybe colorblind because they just can't tell who is in their team and who isn't.

What's the reason for not being able to sign a player unless you can scout him? I was on the verge of signing a random but good player from a Polish side for Chippenham, he'd accepted my contract, but I had to cancel it cos I realised I couldn't scout him. And now his club won't accept my approaches to give him a trial. It's getting on my nerves now.

Three reasons:

1. To keep things realistic, clubs in the lower leagues don't tend to bring in players from around the world.

2. To avoid the good player forum influence, there's bound to be loads of brilliant foreigners we could buy for nothing, but without this forum no one would have heard of them.

3. If you can't see all their attributes, why would you want to sign them without a second opinion from a scout or a coach?

Bedford Town - Blue Square South - End of Season 08/09

Well, well, well, this is different to managing at top flight...

So I started the season with 6 youth players, no staff, no transfer budget and a little over £2k to spend on wages. Yep, definitely different http://community.sigames.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

It started with a promise to the board that I'd avoid relegation, but the media guys had different ideas and predicted a finish in 21st place. Thanks.

It was pretty tough. As you'll see I never really got over the half way mark, but i equally never really threatened to go down. I had a couple of good rune, and a couple of bad. The worst was a run of 5 games where i conceded 20 goals and scored 4.

My defence was shocking all season, with centre-backs who could neither run nor tackle, and two goal keepers who were only threatening each other for the title of 'worst signing of the season'.

Going forward I was pretty good, scoring in most games, but never able to hang onto a lead.

I got an early hit on the parent club stakes, and came out with Peterborough. They gave me a few left backs and a striker. They were greatly appreciated, but not too great. then in January I hit them up for a young keeper and I think he saved my season. He didn't do anything great, but he made the occasional save. In fact I think he saved more shots on his debut than the other 2 jokers ever managed.

So the results:

Final position (http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l254/migwar/dafuge/leaguetable1.jpg)

So i finished 14th. A great run in with 5 consecutive wins made us look better than we deserved. As you can see here (http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l254/migwar/dafuge/progress1.jpg) we never really threatened, but we've got a platform to build on now.

Player Stats (http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l254/migwar/dafuge/playerstats1.jpg)

You can see that I built a pretty good passing game up. Those are my 3 rotated central midfielders topping the pass completion table. you can also see my top 2 strikers in the goalscorers league. Which brings me to my:

Key Player (http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l254/migwar/dafuge/caton2.jpg)

With out question the only reason i stayed away from relegation was this guy's goals. Hugely consistant and a great prospect, I just hope I can hold onto him.

So, in conclusion, i'm happy with my first year. It showed me a lot about lower league management and I've really enjoyed it.

My plans? A better keeper and better defenders. If I can improve on thos areas I think I have a realistic chance of pushing for the playoffs.

I think this team could finish in the top-half.

I appreciate that you are not using outside influences to sign players, but a line must be drawn somewhere. What I don't want is people deliberately setting up friendlies so they can sign foreign players, it's far too open for abuse. I'm sorry that your genuine attempt to sign a player is not allowed, but I think it is only fair that we all work within the same rules.

I've decided to take control of my u18's and reserves, so that I can make sure that they get some match time. It's also providing some useful insights into players that I'd otherwise ignore.

At the moment, I've just arranged friendlies against non-league opposition and other Conference South u18's and reserves. None of these seem to be generating any cash. http://community.sigames.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

On the only bright note, they are 'Extreemly happy' that im well within my wage budget.

it's a miracle.... six league games into my season with worksop and we're still unbeaten!! 3 wins, 3 draws so far and we're sitting 4th in the league, 3 points off the top...

exceeding my wildest hopes so far, considering we had no players at all at the club when i took over and when we lost our first 4 friendlies.

got to say that a lot of praise has to go to Justin Cochrane and Oliver Hotchkiss who are running the middle of the park, and have scored 5 goals between them already. vital goals too, as struggling to get them from my strikers. Ol' pineapple head Jason Lee has got on coming off the bench, and a recent loan signing Fairhurst has 2 in 3 matches so far.

hopefully i can keep this sort of form up and push on towards the top. my wage budget of 2.5k per week is creaking and i need to bring in a few more players i feel. about to sign Eifion Williams to bolster my strikeforce. anyone had experience with him? is he worth £250 per week??

will post more soon...

I've practically ignored them, the highlight was losing 4-2 to Kidderminster in the FA Cup 1st Round.

</div></BLOCKQUOTE>

Got to the FA Cup 1st Round, but lost 3-1 to Northwich.

Currently in the 3rd Round of the Setanta Shield, not played in the FA Trophy yet.

AFC Hornchurch - Blue Square South - Start of Season 4 (2011-12)
Well last season majorly sucked. I thought I had a team capable of winning promotion but ended up finishing a miserable 16th (http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff262/paulsgruff_fm/leaguetable.jpg) - our lowest finish yet. Due to my annoyance at our terrible performances, I just continued on through the close season forgetting to take screenies of squad and league graph etc (it seems that league graphs from previous seasons still don't show when I adjust the year to look at previous league tables).

Hopefully the new season can't possibly get any worse than my last effort. I will probably take quite a while to get through season 4 (I've had a major FM binge this weekend to get through 3 seasons already - work will interfere from tomorrow onwards). After being so fed up with my teams performances, I nearly totally emptied my first team, selling and releasing players where possible, and have built an entirely new look first team (http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff262/paulsgruff_fm/newseasonsquad.jpg) based solely on my scouts findings, my transfers (http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff262/paulsgruff_fm/newseasontransfers.jpg) could go either way really, the players I have bought in LOOK better than the players I have got rid of, but how they work together is yet to be seen. I will also be varying away from the standard 4-4-2 I have been struggling with for the previous 3 seasons, and will attempt a similar shape to what Chelsea (http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff262/paulsgruff_fm/newtactics.jpg) regularly used in FM07 (mainly due to my lack of decent wingers).

I wasn't at all confident about giving the captaincy to a new player (Jonathan D'Laryea), but 9 players gave a positive reaction to the decision, and only one thought it was a bad choice, so I got a rather lucky boost in pre-season morale there - along with a fantastic 2-2 draw with Portsmouth Reseves... who are Portsmouth anyway? http://community.sigames.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

So my goal for this season is naturally "Do better than last season!" My contract runs out at the end of the year, so I'm really hoping my side finishes at least mid-table to match the expectations of the board.

I know I'm not playing in this, and its not about using LLM rules, but I agree thats just too unrealistic and an easy way to make money.

All challenges in here should be about playing fairly and not taking advantage of problems with the game.

Those B teams shouldn't even accept friendlies with obscure English clubs in the first place, probably a good idea to post it in the bugs forum.

Spirit of the game, thats what I meant. Its like on CM 03/04 when you could put a forward arrow on the MC to SC and they would be unstoppable, its exploiting a bug/flaw in the game making it a lot easier than it should be.

Yeah the downside is having to replace them, but its usually doable without spending much money at all. Seems to always happen with backs to me as well, which is actually good because i play a system where backs are fairly similar to my wingers and i can drop a reserve winger back there until i find a new signing.

End Of Season Update 08/09

So a long and alright-ish season, with both ups and downs along the way. Best thing about season is that i stayed clear of relegation by 15 points, mostly because i went 11 games unbeaten then 6 games unbeaten, though i did lose the last 6 games of the season and it ended my promotion challenge.

Transfers

Some of my signings weren't that good, didn't really get a prolific goal scorer, top goal scorer was my right winger Danny Racchi who also got most assits and highest average rating, therefore my best player, though i did come close to selling him but i couldn't he was my god.

Feeder Club

Got the mighty Stevenage as my feeder team, think i will cancel my link with them as they seem rather on the dung department and the players they have just aren't any better then my current lot. Hopefully i will get some good performances next season.

League Standings (http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y77/liambs/BlueSquaretable.jpg)

I think that 12th was a good position as my players didn't seem to play that well and i couldn't really find a consistent formation, thank god for that 11 game unbeaten run.

Player Stats (http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y77/liambs/Playerstats.jpg)

As you can see, they didn't really play that well, but they did the job and kept me up. Signed Big Steve Torpey but he was doing dung so i moved him to my reserves.
Dale Underwood was a big shock, didn't start him till 2nd half of the season but he scored some important goal.

Best player (http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y77/liambs/DannyRacchi.jpg)

Has to bee Danny Racchi, signed him on a free and has been key in us staying up.

As a suggestion for the friendlies bit, perhaps friendlies should only be able to be played against teams whos players you can scout?

I know its not really enforceable as people arn't posting fixtures lists, but at least it would give people new to these challenges a guideline to follow.

For anybody playing as a team with a reputation of under 1000, is everybody finding it extremely difficult to get anybody of any quality in on loan.

Having identified a disticnt lack of goals from my forwards, I have tried everybody and anybody on the loan list from the strikers, who would be intrested in signing for Mangotsfield for the season.

Having offered a contract to all, not one person has accepted an offer from me, some even joining a club without a league to play in, thus highlighting the difference in the rep.

Never seen the seriously look into one. Nice find http://community.sigames.com/customicons/icon14.gif

Unknown Brown takes over at Banbury United (the Puritans)

After the sensational promotion from the Southern Premier, Banbury have appointed Allan Brown as manager for the new season.

I like going with obscure teams, this looks like it may be a tough season though!

Banbury have a reputation of 800 http://community.sigames.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif

Allan, you are the most manliest amongst men here, your chest must be so hairy your medallions get lost at times. </div></BLOCKQUOTE>

I'll hopefully drag this teams reputation up to the heavens where it belongs by playing pure football which matches our nickname! But with no staff, no money and no fans its going to be tricky! http://community.sigames.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Im taking it reeeeally slowly though, and am off to bed for the night! http://community.sigames.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Hello! this challenge looked so interesting I decided to join in. Tiverton Town is the team.

Profile (http://img145.imageshack.us/img145/1011/ftorres9profileab1.jpg)

I'm currently just finished with pre-season after starting with a 7-2 defeat against Exeter and ending with a draw against the Arsenal reserves! (http://img81.imageshack.us/my.php?image=tivertonvarsenalxp7.jpg) amazing considering they started with players like Bendtner, Marica, and Flamini...

The squad i managed to build will hopefully be good enough to secure the mid-table position that is demanded, or even a promotion if I'm lucky.

My key-players will probably be Barnes (http://img147.imageshack.us/img147/9394/ashleybarnesuy1.jpg), Edwards (http://img150.imageshack.us/img150/6862/lewisedwardskz9.jpg), and Misiewiczok (http://img150.imageshack.us/img150/9082/michalmisiewiczok0.jpg), all loaned from my parent club Plymouth. I also have a promising regen in Lewis Edwards (http://img150.imageshack.us/img150/6862/lewisedwardskz9.jpg) who my staff says have the potential to become a good League 2 player, hopefully he will develop into a good player for me. Now it's time to start the season.

Boreham Wood December 08 update. Conference South.

(H) Wood 2 AFC Wimbledon 1.
Bailey, Caddick.

(H) Wood 0 Eastbourne Boro 0.

FA Trophy 1st Round.
(A) Wood 0 Rochdale 4.

(A) Wood 1 Fisher 2.
Semple.

Current league position 5th http://community.sigames.com/customicons/icon14.gif.

I've released "The Mailman" on a free. I offered him a mutual contract termination however he agreed to waive any fee as he was confidant of finding another club. The 34 year old midfielder was so named because he "always delivered" from the "crazy midfielder position" bacj in about CM4(ish). I saw him play in League 2 a few weeks ago and while his legs may gbe gone, he's still decent on the ball. Anyway, dafuge's challenge is no place for sentimentality so he's gone.

Keeping it within clubs you can scout is realistic.

Incidentally, arranging friendlies whilst in the conference north for my u18s helped my balance *however* I asked and Dafuge gave me the go ahead. I arranged them realistically (1 a week). Now they are in a league I obviously no longer do this. Now this could be seen as a bit dodgy but in real life sides of this level do charge for u18 games.

Alurny. Come off it. You can't really be comparing a Championship side, (League 1 side in Forest's case), tyo the likes of Real, Athletico, & Barca. It is realistic for some biggish English sides to send a Reserve team to the likes of Worksop. I haben't got a problem with that. What I do have a problem with is people using loopholes in the game to cheat. This is cheating. You've tried to say it happens, and given examples to prove your point, but then made my point for me by not gicing a single valid example of a continental European giant such as the 3 already mentioned playing the likes of Worksop. It's ridiculous!

Nobody has a problem with your Reserves or U18's playing games because they haven't got league fixtures. That's not the same os playing 3 money-spinning games against The Reserve teams of the some of the best teams in Europs.

My goal in my first season was to survive using as few resources as necessary. I finished 16th and have never had any real problems throughout the season. The second half of the season wasn't that good as most of my matches ended in a draw then.

I had to build a team from scratch as the only non-grey players were three 17 year old kids. Getting Bristol City as a parent club really helped as they sent me Cole Skuse, a great midfielder and Stephen Henderson, a good young goalkeeper. To fill the other spots I looked for free players or players that were allowed to leave their club for free.

Definitely, arranging friendlies with clubs outside your scouting abilities should not be allowed, because it just wouldn't happen in real life, I was just being pedantic in pointing that out above.

As big as Man Utd are, they are still based in the same country as Worksop which makes it far more possible. Man Utd often play friendlies against very lowly opposition in UK & Ireland in pre-season and just give their youth a run around or players that need match fitness.

Very rarely do you see an enormous FOREIGN club come over specifically to play a none league side, in fact I can't name an example of any team from abroad that features in the Champions League (like Barcelona & Real Madrid do) that has done this in recent years. They come over to play the big English teams yes, but I can't remember the last time they came over just to play in a competition that a none league side is hosting.

No problem mate, I realised almost immediately after I'd posted that first comment that it might have sounded like I was advocating the idea of such friendly arrangements, hence my quick follow-up to it.

Nice one! I'm playing with Guiseley who are my local team so I already know which other clubs are nearby, but I'm sure this will prove helpful to others.

I nerver did this challenge last year as I was too late, but I didn't think it would be so hard.. I'm being chelmsford, and the only ray of light has been captain Gez Murphy, who was one of the heroes of the FA Cup last year IRL, who has 7 in 10.
Also, I think many people thought some bloke said 'Barca, Real, Athletico' etc, he actually said the B AND C teams of those teams...

Still very unrealistic, I don't think I've ever heard of any non-league side having friendlies against B and C teams from clubs like those.

Yea i agree. I must admit, in the FM07 7.0.1 game (carshalton) i did do this, (around 4 or 5 each pre-season) and i made close on 2 Million a year from them for about 4 years (i even posted it in the FM07 Challenge forum) and it was VERY unrealistic. Close on £10 million in the bank for a conference national team was stupid.

This year i havant tried it yet, (forgot about it, to be honest), and, since we seem to communally agree its cheating, i'll not do it.

But i do still need to get quick cash, (150k) because the board are becoming increasingly unhappy about the state of the finances...

(which, just as dafuge found out, was laregly due to the 'win bonus' at the end of the season)

A crippling 75k was paid out to my players for finishing 12th .. god forbid had i made it any higher....

Mini Update

October 2009: Stamford: Conference National

- We sit 15th and basically are doing enough to bob about mid table. A win here and there is helping us maintain safety. This league is *far* harder than the North. The professional teams are a step above any I am really lacking goals at the moment from any reliable source.

- I am packing up my CD and giving ti to my housemate as I have to study a lot this week. Ill pop in and see how everyone is getting on but now its no more matches for me until Saturday.

Good luck everyone!

Gateshead 10/11 Season Review

Well what can I say, at the start of the season we were 2nd favourites to win, yet were expected to finish 12th http://community.sigames.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_confused.gif

Nevertheless the team battled extremely hard and we won the league in one of the closest seasons I've ever seen. At one point there was only 13 points separating 1st from 15th!

Despite this the team pulled off an incredible 11 game unbeaten run right at the end of the season, that including a club record breaking 7 straight wins.

It went right down to the last game of the season, with Lincoln still having the opportunity to win it. Luckily Forest Green beat them 2-1, leaving us to draw 2-2 with Salisbury to lift the trophy.

League Table (http://img155.imageshack.us/img155/2723/leaguetablesz4.jpg)
League Progress Graph (http://img88.imageshack.us/img88/4114/graphpl7.jpg)

Record Breakers (http://img148.imageshack.us/img148/3550/recordcp8.jpg)

On loan Newcastle players played an integral part of the season, especially David Edwards (http://img135.imageshack.us/img135/5241/edwardsug6.jpg) who returned to the International Stadium for another season, netting 30 goals in his 52 games. Other key players were goalkeeper Chris Winterton (http://img181.imageshack.us/img181/6743/wintertonvl8.jpg) and attacking midfielder Shaun Jeffers (http://img155.imageshack.us/img155/9301/jefferssd1.jpg).

A nice addition to the successful season was the discovery of young starlet Luke Medley (http://img100.imageshack.us/img100/5613/medleyty8.jpg) who was signed on a free from Droylsden. He was injured for 4 months of the season but still managed to net 10 times in 22 starts.

The whole squad (http://img141.imageshack.us/img141/7471/squadbn9.jpg)

So all in all, an extremely pleasing season for me. we're finally going to be playing league football next season http://community.sigames.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Bedford Town - Conference North - End of 08/09 Review

A pretty honest season, where I wish I could have done more, but still bodes well for the future.

Competitions
Conference North (http://konquest.org/images/fm08/dafuge/0809/table.jpg): 11th http://community.sigames.com/customicons/icon14.gif http://community.sigames.com/customicons/icon13.gif - 16W 10D 16L 57GF 58GA -1 58Pts (Media prediction: 19th)
FA Cup: 1st Round http://community.sigames.com/customicons/icon14.gif http://community.sigames.com/customicons/icon14.gif
Setanta Shield: N 1st Rnd http://community.sigames.com/customicons/icon13.gif
FA Trophy: 4th Round http://community.sigames.com/customicons/icon14.gif

As you can see in the graph (http://konquest.org/images/fm08/dafuge/0809/graph.jpg), we started the season like lions. I have quickly found a tactic I liked and it worked out pretty well. After 15 games, we were sitting in 4th position, not quite far from the top. However, injuries have started to happen and some players who were on a roll somehow slowed down. The rest of the season was passed by slowly oscillating between 5th place and 12th place, only to finish 11th on a bad run towards the end of the season.

The Cups went pretty well.
In the Setanta Shield, we were drew against then top of the table Worksop and lost on penalties. We were 1 round behind expectations here, so the board was not super happy.
However, we made up in the FA Cup. We beat Worcester, Hitchin, Rushden (then top of the Conference National), before losing 0-4 at QPR. That heavy loss on the opponents pitch made wonders to our
finances (http://konquest.org/images/fm08/dafuge/0809/finances.jpg), as we raked in over 100K£ just from this game.
The FA Trophy went pretty well too. We beat Tamworth (who were undefeated in 25 games at the time), Bishop's Cleeve, Altricham and Burton before losing to Forest Green. Nice performances from my guys there.

All in all, it was a pretty good season, the board is relatively happy (http://konquest.org/images/fm08/dafuge/0809/confidence.jpg) and looking forward for next season. They were less happy of some turkeys that I've signed, but that's another story.
Confidence Summary (http://konquest.org/images/fm08/dafuge/0809/confidence summary.jpg)

Players
At this level, I employed the shotgun strategy.
Sign a lot of guys (http://konquest.org/images/fm08/dafuge/0809/transfers.jpg), you're bound to find a couple that are pretty good. The downside of that is that you sign a lot of people that quickly become useless due to their limited skill and potential. Here are some of the good players I did manage to sign. I have adopted Jimbo's habit of nicknaming people (right now, I use it as a marker of getting a full time contract...)

Jordan (http://konquest.org/images/fm08/dafuge/0809/jordan.jpg): I remembered Jordan from my dafuge's challenge of last year. I had signed him up in league 1 and wanted to see where he was right now. I was pretty surprised to find him unattached and willing to sign with us. He quickly established himself as our first choice striker, hitting the back of the net 21 times in 30 apps. Even though he played only 2/3 of a season for us, he managed to finish 6th best goalscorer of the league. Can't wait for next year! http://community.sigames.com/customicons/icon14.gif http://community.sigames.com/customicons/icon14.gif

Sol (http://konquest.org/images/fm08/dafuge/0809/sol.jpg): Young fellow who assumed a role of backup striker for the year and managed to do well, especially in the cups. Showing nice signs of improvement. http://community.sigames.com/customicons/icon14.gif

McGavin (http://konquest.org/images/fm08/dafuge/0809/mcgavin.jpg): Nice wigner who can dribble pretty much anyone at that level and cross really well too. 5 goals and 6 assists is pretty good... http://community.sigames.com/customicons/icon14.gif

Ashley Harrison-Barker (http://konquest.org/images/fm08/dafuge/0809/ashley.jpg): Came in on loan from our parent club Luton. 3rd best assister of the league, with 13 assists and also 10 goals. Doesn't want to sign with us, and I don't think I'll need him for the next year either.

Here is the rest of the squad (http://konquest.org/images/fm08/dafuge/0809/player_stats.jpg). As you can see, some were pretty good, but I had a lot of rubbish too.

Next season shopping list:
- GK (Ross Faulds on loan is just not cutting it...)
- DC (I need someone to clear the front of the net)
- Highly creative MC, ideally with good long shooting.

Other things to note...
Not-so-Super Kyle had a rubbish year, ending the year as a backup and scoring only 5 goals in 14(23) appearances. His 07-08 season was also pretty average, with 14 goals in 31 apps. Only worth 2K£ as opposed to 10K£ at the start of the season.
Meanwhile, Mensah-Omari Kinch (of Bandit's fame), was on loan at Burscough and scored 7 in 16(6). Not bad, but not quite legendary status as in the Bandit's thread.

Our club value (http://konquest.org/images/fm08/dafuge/0809/club_info.jpg) si now listed as £325K, which is pretty good, but is mostly due to our game against QPR.

Other available teams for the challenge:
BSS
Margate: 4th http://community.sigames.com/customicons/icon14.gif
AFC Wimbledon: 12th
Merthyr Tydfil: 16th

BSN
Worksop: 2nd and promoted through playoffs http://community.sigames.com/customicons/icon14.gif http://community.sigames.com/customicons/icon14.gif
Hednesford: 6th http://community.sigames.com/customicons/icon14.gif
Bedford: 11th

The new Player Stats Overview (http://konquest.org/images/fm08/dafuge/0809/stats.jpg) screen is mighty cool. I can't wait to paint it all in green with my players names.

Liverpool has won the Premiership, easily with 82 points in front of ManUtd (75), ManCity (66) and Chelsea (62).

Looking ahead
Next year, I definitely want to push for promotion. With the money we've got in bank, I might even get the board to improve our facilities. A cup run would help, but promotion in the league is really the priority. We'll see!

Chelmsford City-Transfer window update-League Two-September 2010
Well the transfer window is finally over and its been a very busy one. Bringing in no less than 18 players to try to establish ourselves in league two. Much of the money coming from selling my two left backs for 450k+. Big signing of the summer was Nick Chadwick who will hopefully score the goals. Good piece of business to bring in Henderson on a free transfer.

Nick Chadwick (http://img148.imageshack.us/img148/3396/chadwickvo5.jpg)

Ive spent quite a bit of money so I hope its worth it, League 2 will be much more of a challenge and ill be happy just to stay up.

Since none of the SS08 packs I downloaded actually contained decent quality AFC Hornchurch kits (in most cases the away kit was the wrong size, the sponsor logo was incorrect (missing the yellow border all the way around) , the club badge and sponsors were totally the wrong size and the red was far too bright on the home kit), I decided to make them myself.

AFC Hornchurch Kits Preview Image (http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff262/paulsgruff_fm/preview.png)

If anybody else wants to use them, you are very welcome to, I have uploaded them here (http://files.filefront.com/AFC+Hornchurch+Kitsrar/;8855793;/fileinfo.html). I prefer them to the ones I've found anywhere else anyway, but then I would say that wouldn't I? You will have to adjust the file names/config files accordingly to match each other if you wish to use these.

I'm no expert at making graphics, but if anyone is missing kits for their team (I have no intention on making kits that are already widely available) then I am happy to make a few in my free time until some better ones appear for download on the net (the ones I make will be the same standard as the ones I linked above).

I'm also happy to make some fantasy kits if you hate the ones your club currently has - as long as you provide details on which sponsor, kit manufacturer, club badge position (right, centre etc), sponsor direction (standard horizontal, vertical like Ajax etc) and if you would like home & away versions. Naturally they will all be SS08 and I won't make any other styles because, in my opinion, the SS08 ones look far better than the other styles going around.

Anyway, the offer is there if anybody wants it - it is a thing I would do in my free time however, so don't expect them to be done instantly http://community.sigames.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Damn looks like I can't edit. Anyway, the board thankfully haven't put too much pressure on me, an Australian with a Latvian passport, with them wanting to win the Blue Square South in 4 years time.

Other expectations:
This season - battle bravely against relegation
FA Cup - 3rd Qualifying round
Setanta Shield - First Promotion
FA Trophy - Enjoy the experience http://community.sigames.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_cool.gif

Yes, at the start of the season.
I got QPR as a parent club but they didn't send a player to me until October.
I did ask and got Shabazz Baidoo off them for a season loan and he's top scorer for me so far.

I got a keeper, Chris Dunn from Northampton IIRC, my supportes don't rate him but he's better then the other keepers in the squad and I can't get another keeper in on loan.

QPR sent me Chris Arthur in October, he's the player I mentioned in a previous post that got an extra time winner in the Sultana Shield against a much better Eastbourne Boro team with my best DC (Michael Raynes) sent off late in the second half.

I have also got 1 or 2 other pretty poor players in on loan as backup just so that I've got spare bodies in positions I'm short of.

I think part of the problem is that I'm not willing to pay their wages unless they would strengthen my first team.
Also my board won't let me spend any more money on the wage budget, which IMO is very realistic unlike those people who have managed to spend double their wage budget without the board blocking it.

I think a gentleman's agreement is called for. Everyone from now on agrees that unrealistic friendlies will not be organised. Friendlies against Premiership teams (if you can get them) is acceptable. A realistic amount of friendlies must be played. No arranging 30 games and just using U18's or grey players in them purely to make money.

I would suggest that anyone who has done it should be allowed to carry on as they have exposed a loophole that is now closed.

How did that happen?

Who got relegated from the Blue Square N/S and who else got promoted?

I would have thought a reputation of 450, the second lowest in the Southern Premier League would make it impossible for them to be promoted.

Whoever it was that was having trouble getting the AFC Hornchurch kits to show up, I've found the solution. The Ryman League Division 1 North pack you have probably downloaded contains an entry for AFC Hornchurch in it's config file, you just need to delete those two lines.

Perhaps it can happen, just extremely rarely. But after a couple of hundred of people have tried, with many over 50 times each, these clubs might pop up.

I'm looking forward to a long successful era with Marine AFC, and so are they. There is a real sense of confidence and belief around the club, and in the dressing room."

Pundits are declaring that Gun-Head's success in the Blue Square North will depend entirely upon his creativity in the transfer market. Being given a non-existent transfer fund, and an imaginary back room staff, Machi Gun-Head has it all to do at Marine AFC.

Profile (http://img87.imageshack.us/img87/8577/dafugestartbe5.jpg)

Dire Times at Marine AFC [30th September 2008]
It is the dawn of October, and Machi Gun-Head will not want to wake up. His 'pig-like managing abilities', as described by one of the Mariner's season ticket holders, have led the team into a black hole of bad form. Currently 11 games into their latest shot at the Blue Square Northern league sees them sitting second bottom in 21st position. Currently the most penetrable team in the league with 30 goals against, and one of the most humble teams in front of goals, Marine look to be headed back to where they came from.

Fans have been bemused by their chairman's hesitation, and have been calling for Machi's head. Unless he can turn things around, Machi will continue destroying the Mariner's hopes and dreams, which were at such fever pitched levels back in June.

Pundits have been suggesting that the squad is just too inexperienced, and those on the field with some experience are too old to do any good. With only a quarter of the squad older than 19 years of age, and four of the remaining five older than 30, fans are calling for some 'real' leadership.

***Dave Hammer Chelmsford city season update 2008/09***

What started as a season full of promise unfortunatly petered out into a season of mediocrity, with Chelmsford not rising above 7th all season.

Mid table finish (http://i120.photobucket.com/albums/o197/Dave_Hammer/BlueSquareSouthStages.jpg)

Graph (http://i120.photobucket.com/albums/o197/Dave_Hammer/BlueSquareSouthPastPositions.jpg)

Very few of my players will survive the close season which promises to be brutal. I only reall started having a good few results from january onwards when a link up with West Ham was approved and they sent me some great youngsters with Hogan Ephraim being the pick of the bunch.
Hogan Ephraim (http://i120.photobucket.com/albums/o197/Dave_Hammer/HoganEphraimProfile-1.jpg)

Out of the players i brought in,in the summer the only one who really impressed was Sammy Igoe who showed some lovely touches and must have hit the post and bar a dozen times.

Sammy Igoe (http://i120.photobucket.com/albums/o197/Dave_Hammer/SammyIgoeProfile.jpg)

So overall i wanted a play off place but as we all know by now its a marathon and i feel that the season experience i have achieved will stand me in good stead(bearing in mind i did'nt really play the demo).

I will update with my summer signings and i just hope West Ham are as charitable as they were last time.

Welcome to the challenge.
IIRC Halesowen starts the game with a number of players. That's one reason why I rejected them as there's bound to be a load of crap players and not many players good enough to help get promotion.

One of the new features on FM08 is the ability to set and remove a nickname from your manager's profile. So instead of spending time blanking out your name you could set your nickname to westhamrob whilst doing screenshots and then remove it afterwards.

So despite Cambridge giving us a bit of a doing, we're still on posession of 4th place and have opened up a gap of 4 points to 5th. I've had to change my tactics due to the fitness/injury issues with all 3 Target Men and we have managed the transition with ease. If February goes like January that will do me.

My experience is that this is mainly a problem during the opening months of the season. I tend to not play them if they are below 90% and play a reserve instead.

Towards the end of the season the main 11 plays almost all games, since they are now fully fit and able to go the distance!

I also train primarily aerobic and strength, to get them lazy buggers fit!

Perhaps your training schedule is too heavy, so the players are training too much and don't have enough left in their tank for match day.

Most of my players could play every game, but I still employ a squad rotation for midfielders and strikers and occasionally on defenders. If a player is less then 93% condition on match day then I mentally tag him as a player to rotate out for a game, if I can. Otherwise he gets subbed during the game if he gets to around 65-70%

Also if the game is a cup game against lower league opposition (or occasionally at the bottom of the league) then I do tend to put more second string players in, like my second choice keeper just to help to keep them fit.

One important thing, I never play a player who is "tired" unless I have no other option, even from the U18 side. If a tired player plays then, IMO, his fitness suffers and he'll never get to be fit.

I instigated this but I do believe that you should be able to play loads frendlies for Reserves/U18's in Conference North/South as you do not have a league structure.

I play my Reserves AGAINST my U18's at least once a week every week throughout the season. I usually have a big squad and am constantly trialing new players.

FM-MP Welcome to the mad-house!

*****To all those with fitness issues*****

1. Advertise at job centre for fitness coach.

2. Employ 1 carp fitness coach.

3. Sign as many players as possible on to full-time contracts, (some won't even ask any more wages).

4. Make sure that anyone who is not playing in your senior team is demoted to your Reserves.

5. Make sure that your Reserves have frendlies scheduled, (if in doubt play your U18's).

6. If like me you get loads of players in on trial, terminate the trial if you decide that they are not for you. If they stay, they will take up a spot in the Reserves match squad that could/should be filled by a player that has a future at the club and needs the game.

7. Don't play players who aren't fit enough. It's better to play a poorer quality player thanit is to risk a barely fit star.

My goalie has been playing poorly recently, so I thought I'd have a look around for a replacement. I came across this bloke. (http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y134/dafuge/lars241010.jpg)

He was released from Everton after failing to make a single appearance for the club, he did however make his full international debut for Norway at the age of 19, winning two caps.

Will he sign for me? I can't even find out. I can't offer him a contract because he is RETIRING http://community.sigames.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_mad.gif

My scouts considered him a good League 1/2 player so he could easily have found a club. He has not had any serious injuries, he just seems to be retiring because he has been without a club for a while.

Why has he decided to retire?

Surely a youngster who was representing his country only a year ago would be able to find a club?

Why can't I make him an offer in an attempt to change his mind?

Jimbokav1971 I agree with reserve/Under 18's friendlies. I was getting at pre season where people create lots of friendlies but use grey players purely to create extra funds, not to get players fit/ trial players/ try new tactics.

Hi I have been following this thread for a while and decided to give it a go but I am getting frustrated at the amount of time it is taking to get to the start date.I have been holidaying for an hour and a half now and I have only just hit January.

I think that if one person was to upload the database when they reach the start date It would save a lot of time collectively.

Just a thought not sure about the time it takes to upload a database personally but im sure someone with a fast computer could do it quite quickly.

Take note though, these are logos from FM07, all I have done is update the config files so logos appear in the right places. They are last season's logos, so they are a bit out of data and the background logos don't fit properly, but they are better than nothing. There are various save games available for download from the website.

To make the holiday year go quicker, try turning all the detail levels to none and disable the auto save, that should make it a bit quicker.

Put them here: My Documents\Sports Interactive\Football Manager 2008\graphics

Then go to preferences - display & sound, untick 'use skin cache', tick 'reload skin on confirm'. Confirm it, then go back and put it back how it was.

I've had a look in the past and it completely passed me by but I'm thinking of jazzing up my game a little.

Boreham Wood February 2009 update. Conference National.

(H) Wood 0 Havant & W 1.

(A) Wood 3 W-S-M 1.
Bailey, McGivern, Dayton.

(H) Wood 3 Bromley 0.
Caddick (3 hat-trick).

(A) Wood 1 Eastleigh 0.
Caddick.

Current league position 5th http://community.sigames.com/customicons/icon14.gif.

I thought a poor January had blown it for us as we plummeted from a comfortable 4th to an out of contention 8th. A good February put us back on track, jelped in no small way by Super-sub Caddick, (whose 4 goals this season all came from the bench).

After experimenting with tutouring for the first real time, Caddick now has the PPM "places shots" which he learn't from the agine Graz. If I can just teach him the "likes to lob keeper", we could have a star on our hands. (Have I mentioned he's 6'4" and most of his goals are scored with his feet).

League leaders Ebbsfleet still haven't lost this season, yet are only 2 points ahead of 2nd placed Dorchester. We have Ebbsfleet next so a draw will be a great result. We're only 2 points ahead of 6th placed Newport with 8 games to play, (however we do have a game in hand).

Broken ribs and leg have sidelined my best central midfielders and I now have a 16 year old on the bech. Barry who has been moved to MC from Dr has been a revelaton, but unfortunately his collection of cards mean that he is suspended for the Ebbsfleet game. Barry assisted for all 3 of Caddick's goals v Bromley.
