Introduction

Welcome to a sign up game - with a twist! Cliched start, I know, but here’s the deal - the basic idea of a lot of sign ups is that you create a footballing starlet who is entered into the database with a really high PA, and follow his career as he develops into a world-renowned superstar. But what would happen if we introduced a bit of chance into the proceedings? A kind of footballing genetics lottery, if you will?

The basic premise of this sign up is that your player will not necessarily end up as a footballing god. All players will be assigned the same CA - but a randomly generated PA. Your player may be the best player in the history of Real Madrid - or he might be a footnote in the history of Rochdale.

So, all you have to do is create a striker using the form below. Then follow your players unpredictable career trajectory and find out if you get to score goals in the World Cup Final... or the 1st Round of the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy. And remember - it could be you... who’s crap!

How to sign up

Fill in the form below with your players name, details, and attributes. Remember - all players will be strikers - makes it a bit easier to keep track of - and to compare how everybody’s doing!

Picking a club/league: You can choose a club from any of the following leagues to start at:

The number in brackets represents that league’s current reputation. I will try to balance the CA/PA so that even the worst players will be good enough to play consistently in leagues with a reputation of around 8 or 9, so you should be relatively safe picking any of the above leagues to start in - except MLS and the A-League - these are included in case anyone has a burning desire to start in these leagues. However, leagues at a lower level than that may give you more chance of starting early on.

If you don’t want to pick a team to play for, then you can choose a league and I will assign you a random team in that league - or alternatively, you can just leave it to me to randomly assign you a league and team to play for. And feel free to be as exotic with your nationality/league combinations as you like.

Player personality: As a further little bit of interest, you can also pick your players personality from the following list:

Globetrotter - the type of player who is not afraid of change, and is willing to travel to new countries to search for new opportunities.

Lone wolf - driven, ambitious, but maybe a little full of themselves at times. Will court controversy to get what they want.

Model professional - wherever he goes, he never causes a fuss, but just gets down to the serious business of playing football.

Big game player - whether its the big crowds or the bright lights, this guy never fails to shine when the pressure is on.

Faithful servant - believes that when a club makes a commitment to him, he should make a commitment to them. Will stick with his team through thick and thin.

Bad boy - it’s probably detrimental to his career, but he just can’t help himself - he spreads a cloud of dissension wherever he goes.

Attributes at “20â€: Remember that the attributes that you want to be set at 20 will only be at 20 in an ideal world. Although I will enter them into the database as 20, the game will automatically adjust them depending on your players ability and potential. Part of the fun of this sign up is to find out whether your player ever actually gets good enough to have that attribute at 20 - so don’t worry when I post your player’s profile and none of your chosen attributes are actually at 20!

Date of birth - all players birth year will be set to 1990 so that they will be 16/17 when the game starts. However, you can put in whatever day/month you like.

How the sign-up will work

I’ll give monthly reports on everybody’s progress, as well as some “Player League Tablesâ€. I’m currently thinking that I’ll keep track of several league tables, as follows:

1. A simple table in which all players are ranked simply by their total career goals, at whatever level.

2. A table in which all players career goals are weighted by what level they were scored at - so someone who’s scored 15 goals in the Premier League will be higher than someone who’s scored 25 in League 2.

3. Players will be divided into “Divisions†depending on what level they play at - for instance, players playing in the Premier League or Serie A will be part of the top division, players playing in MLS or the Championship will be in a middle division, and players playing in the Conference or the Scottish Third Division will be in the bottom division. This just means that, even if your player never makes it to the big leagues, you can still have some bragging rights by saying that he is the best striker at his level.

When all is said and done, I will reveal everyone’s PA and we can judge how well they lived up to their potential.

Remember, it’s a lot more fun for everybody when a sign up has lots of active users who are posting frequently. So, try to keep posting if you decide to join the sign up.

How the sign-up will work

I’ll give monthly reports on everybody’s progress, as well as some “Player League Tablesâ€. I’m currently thinking that I’ll keep track of several league tables, as follows:

1. A simple table in which all players are ranked simply by their total career goals, at whatever level.

Well, first of all - you may not be good enough to sign for a top side! But the way I'm envisaging it, your division will depend on the level you regularly play at. Since everyone is starting in fairly low level clubs, everyone will be at the same "level" for the first season or two. But as people start to get transfers, they'll gradually start to separate out, at which point they'll be split into divisions depending on what level you play at regularly. If, once this has happened, you then move up from one level to another, then yes, you would get "promoted" into a different division. You wouldn't be promoted for coming top in your table, since the point of having player "divisions" is so that you can compare your player to other players of a similar level of ability - if you come top of the table, that means you get to say, for instance, that, although you may not be good enough to play in the Premier League, you're the best damn League One striker of them all!

I think the way it works will probably adapt slightly as we go through the seasons, because even though I've run a couple of test games, it's really difficult to tell how these things are actually going to shake out until you do a "live" version. But that's my general thinking.
