Cant extend contract?

I have bought a promosing 17 year old CB from Italy in the first January window with Newcastle. I am delighted to have signed him, but the only problem is that he only wanted to sign a 2 year contract. When he officially came to the club, I tried to negotiate his contract to a longer date, but the arrow to increase the contract length was greyed out - despite this I can still offer up to 5 years (the normal) amount to any other player. Is it because he is only 17 or do I have to wait untill the summer to extend the contract or is it a bug? Thanks.

I think its because he is under 18. You can only offer certain lengths of contract to players of that age... I think....

cheers for the swift reply rinso. Does this happen IRL too? I thought many talented teenagers would be tied down to long deals when they get to the professional age. Also, I forgot to add that when I went to offer him a new contract, he stated he wanted a 3 year deal - but the 2 year deal was still only the maximum.

I think it must happen irl for it to be implemented in the game. I think its something that has come in over the past few years, as Im sure it didnt used to be that way...

I would be 99.9% sure that SI know the rules here. Let him turn 18 and offer again on his birthday. Make a note to remind you.
