I am honoured to be able to announce that Oliver & Paul Collyer, founders of Sports Interactive, originators of the ideas that have become Football Manager and Football Manager Live, and all round good blokes, have been awarded M.B.E.'s in the New Year Honours List for their services to the UK games industry.

We are delighted to see this award being given to our friends and colleagues, who both thoroughly deserve it. Without Ov & Paul, and the ideas they had when still at school in their home county of Shropshire, there would be no modern day Football Manager, no Football Manager Handheld, no Football Manager Live, and no SI or SI community, so we all owe a big debt to them, and it's nice to see the UK hierarchy recognise that.

Below is a statement from Oliver & Paul.

"We are really proud to have been given this honour, which is something we never thought would happen to us.

We first started working on the ideas that have become the Football Manager series over 20 years ago because we wanted to make football management games that we wanted to play. That the games have been so successful was never part of the master plan, and we have to thank everyone on the team at Sports Interactive for all their work over the last 2 decades, as well as our teams of researchers, testers, moderators, SEGA and our other publishing partners, and our community for everything they've done, as we certainly wouldn't be able to be accepting this honour without all of their hard work.

We're still heavily involved in the games, with Paul heading up the match engine, and Ov heading up Football Manager Live, and we look forward to many more years making games with the rest of the team that so many people out there enjoy to play.

We feel really lucky to be receiving this honour because we've been lucky enough to spend our lives doing something we enjoy, and indulging one's passion is easy - therefore we dedicate the awards to everyone who has helped us along the way - thank you to all of you."

31-12-2009, 00:29
Congratulations Ov and Paul!

It's great to see people from the video games industry recognized in the same way leaders from more established fields are. :)

31-12-2009, 00:37
Well done gents.

31-12-2009, 00:41
Very much deserved, well done. The only games that make you actually feel like a football manager have come from the Collyers.

At this point I also doff my cap to all at SI for making FM2010 the best football management game to date.

Congratulations and thanks to you all.

Martin Allen
31-12-2009, 00:42

Statistical Approach
31-12-2009, 01:04
Well played. I'm shocked to be honest, you are both heroes to everyone around these parts but to be recognised with an MBE is special.

31-12-2009, 01:07
wow what an achievement! Congrats to you both.

31-12-2009, 01:08
Wow that's pretty special, many congratulations to you both.

David Beckham_7
31-12-2009, 01:26
I'm not British, so i do not know how special is it to be awarded with a MBE(don't even know bout' it till i google-d it). Then again, judging from the responses, i'm guessing it must really be a big award. So congrats to the both of you.

31-12-2009, 01:29
Congratulations guys its thoroughly deserved after bringing us all many years of happiness with your games.

31-12-2009, 01:31
Congrats guys This is well deserved to you both.

It just goes to show that your dream all that time ago and hard work do pay off. Again well done Paul and Oli.

31-12-2009, 01:31
i have spent 13% of my like since april playing fml and played si games since i was 8 (cm2italy). you have done more for my spare time than anyone else. I have never got bored. so ggwp :)

31-12-2009, 01:33
Congrats to both chaps

Good to see someone from outside the Games Industry recognise the Collyer Brothers' efforts over the years.

31-12-2009, 01:34
Has anyone else in the past from the gaming industry received MBEs?

Neil Brock
31-12-2009, 01:45
Very surprised as surely no-one notices the little old games industry? Totally deserved, considering the value for money I've got playing hours (and hours and hours) of FM and the original CM. Many congratulations guys!

31-12-2009, 01:51
Very surprised but I guess about anyone can get an award these days.

31-12-2009, 01:52
congrats guys, well deserved :)

31-12-2009, 02:08
Very pleased for them both - they've always come across as decent blokes with plenty of time to converse and listen to the fans. Here's to another 20 years

31-12-2009, 02:08
congratulations. wonderful news indeed

31-12-2009, 02:10
congrats a well deserved honour.

Will these be upgraded to Knighthoods when HRH releases a patch :D

31-12-2009, 02:16
Congrats, Oliver & Paul. BIG thanks for the countless years of CM and the addictiveness associated with it. :D

31-12-2009, 02:18
Congratulations guys, certainly deserved.

31-12-2009, 02:27
Just noticed there's an OBE in the honours list to someone for services to the computer gaming industry. A Paul Jackson? No idea who he is though.

Good to see our favourite past-time is getting more recognition.

31-12-2009, 02:30
Congratulations and thanks Paul and Olvier, and of course to everyone in SI.

31-12-2009, 02:33
Congrats..... Long overdue imo, considering I've been playing the CM/FM series since 93/94 and just seems to get better every season

31-12-2009, 02:33
Congratulations lads. Do you meet the Queen to receive such an award?

31-12-2009, 02:49
So when are we going to have OBEs, MBEs, KBEs and Knighthoods in the game?

Would like to see Sir Ryan Giggs, MBE, OBE, Kt in-game.

31-12-2009, 02:53
member of the british empire? that doesn't sound too good to me

31-12-2009, 03:00
Congratulations! This is indeed a great achievement!! :D

31-12-2009, 04:51

31-12-2009, 06:37

Does this mean Everton now get to have a little crown above their crest, like the Spanish sides that have royal patronage? ;)

31-12-2009, 06:47
congrats:) great news for them... all the best for the next award;)

Alex Harris
31-12-2009, 06:56
Wow, amazing news....about time too! Congrats to both of you; guess you'll have to change your names in FML now ;).

31-12-2009, 07:04
Well done guys.

31-12-2009, 07:33

quick question, now that you've been knighted, do you get a suit of armour? best ask the Queen about that one...

31-12-2009, 07:57
Congratulations guys. A very well deserved award.

31-12-2009, 08:04

31-12-2009, 08:28
Congratulations

31-12-2009, 08:30
WHAT - an MBE for causing so many arguments and divorces! Only joking, I've been a big fan since the very beginning when my best mate brought his Amiga version round to my house a few days after it came out. Somehow I've managed to fit in two children and a proper career around my Championship/Football Manager careers. You have brought many hours of fun and frustration to millions of people's lives and should rightfully be proud of your achievements.

Martin White
31-12-2009, 08:32

Congratualtions for putting something good into the last 20 odd years of my life with CM and FM and recently letting me put something back into the game.

Well deserved award for you both.......

31-12-2009, 09:31
I'm not British, so i do not know how special is it to be awarded with a MBE(don't even know bout' it till i google-d it). Then again, judging from the responses, i'm guessing it must really be a big award. So congrats to the both of you.
It's a pretty big award, yeah. It's recognition from the Queen that you've contributed massively to life in the country, although the lowest recognition you can get iirc?

Congratulations sirs
Hold on, they're not getting knighted! That's being saved for Steve Coppell.

31-12-2009, 09:32
Congratualtions couldnt think of two more deserving guys to get honoured dont forget you guys will also go down in history as the first of a i hope many in the games industry getting the official recognition the industry deserves.

31-12-2009, 10:07
Superb news and well deserved!

31-12-2009, 10:10
The Queen apparently cited dafuge's challenge and super_bladesman's level 10 update as her favourite aspects of FM and that her proudest moment was getting Sutton to the Champion's League while she was at Balmoral last year

31-12-2009, 10:11
Congratulations to you both.

31-12-2009, 10:12

31-12-2009, 11:01
Congratulations lads.

The Nobel Peace Prize is next on the list......seriously think about how many warmongers amongst us have been tamed by being enraptured by a couple of seasons of CM/FM/FML

31-12-2009, 11:59
Definitely right. FM is one of my favourite things ever. I'm very much a laptop-holic, but not an internet-holic because I can last an extended period without it, mostly because of FM. May the legacy continue.

31-12-2009, 12:48
Congratulations, very well deserved, I alone must have spent months of my life playing this game - my FM10 save is over 9 days of game time already, and I've been playing since CM2 - so I can only imagine how long the total number of game-hours is across the entire user base!

31-12-2009, 13:01
Well done chaps.

Not bad for what the magazines called a spreadsheet disguised as a game in the old reviews !

Thoroughly deserved though, Football Manager has come from what the games media used to view as an embarrassment played by football nerds to an iconic game and it has been some journey and achievement!

Does Paul get a bigger medal seeing as Ov went on holiday for a big part of it? :)

31-12-2009, 13:09
really? wow congrats

Daddy Yankee
31-12-2009, 13:23
Congratulations! Totally deserved.

31-12-2009, 13:25
well its always a congrats , services to uk gaming <<< wow !!!!! i dont know why that should be recognised , in that case all brits who comes back from afghanistan should have a m.b.e when there issued again !!!!!! , gaming breathes lazyness which has a part in unemployment , there are plenty of 15 - 25 yr olds that are sidetracked by gaming , there are also alot who are obviously not

this is more about the state of the country , and gaming plays a part , in a small way

31-12-2009, 13:28
Well deserved and a big congratulations with a big hug

31-12-2009, 13:30

Well done guys great work!

31-12-2009, 14:09
I actually got a dry throat after reading this!

I mean, for people that are as obsessed with football as me Football Manager (and Championship Manager in the old days) has served as a wonderful place to express that obsession.

Hip hip hurray!

31-12-2009, 14:32

Congratulations, well deserved!

31-12-2009, 14:57
As you can imagine, Ov & Paul are somewhat overwhelmed with the response, so I'd like to thank you all for your lovely comments on their behalf - I would have done it sooner, but my net connection is down from home (you cannot believe what I went through last night to get the announcement up here!) so I've come into the studio to respond :)

Just noticed there's an OBE in the honours list to someone for services to the computer gaming industry. A Paul Jackson? No idea who he is though.

Good to see our favourite past-time is getting more recognition.

Paul Jackson worked at EA for years, but was also the chair of ELSPA, BAFTA and has been involved in lots of other games industry iniatives.

A few others from the industry have got awards over the years - Peter Molyneaux (Bullfrog/Lionhead), the Darling Brothers (Codemasters) and some from publishers.

Does Paul get a bigger medal seeing as Ov went on holiday for a big part of it? :)

Paul also had his fair share of time off - trying to be a rock star in the early CM days (he was in a band called Elevate) - so no, they get the same size medal...

31-12-2009, 14:59
well done congratulations on your mbe's and for recognizing your hardwork

31-12-2009, 15:02
Fantastic - and well deserved. For the gameplay you have offered the world in the Championship Manager and Football Manager Series it is long, long overdue. Well Done Guys :)

31-12-2009, 15:02
Congratulations guys!

31-12-2009, 15:11
Is it true that they were due an mbe 2 years ago but they had that date put back a bit a la fml style?

Seriously, well done lads, in the days of death for many industries in the uk you two have been big players in uk games development.

31-12-2009, 15:13
Congratulations guys.

31-12-2009, 15:19
Thoroughly deserved, congratulations

I had no idea about this until I read this thread. What can I say apart from congratulations, it is very well deserved and I would never had as much fun gaming if it were not for you two. I hope you have a fantastic 2010 and enjoy the day with her majesty.

31-12-2009, 16:36
It great that they have been given recognition as they have probably given most of us a good few day/months playing this game, with each version

Will the MBE be wearable out of the box? ;)

Seriously though nice one guys! :D

31-12-2009, 17:54
Title should be M.B.E.s, should it not? They aren't belonging to a Member of the British Empire.

Alternatively, "Paul and Oliver Collyer are M.B.E.s", "The M.B.E.s of Oliver and Paul Collyer", "Paul and Oliver Collyer's M.B.E.s".

Can't get the grammatically correct titles these days ;) And yeah, at least one of my suggestions is probably flawed.

31-12-2009, 17:57
Great news

Well done to both :)

31-12-2009, 19:28
Congratulations guys :)

31-12-2009, 19:43
I guess it was a matter of either kicking them out of the country for ruining so many people's lives (especially our academic performance and our sentimental relationships) or giving them this award for giving us countless hours of fun and enjoyment for years.

I'm glad they chose the latter ;)

Congratulations guys, I guess everything's too surprising right now, but in some days time you'll probably realize it's amazing how far you've come by achieving this. And I believe you truly deserve it.

I don't even want to imagine what kind of new year's eve party you're gonna have tonight :D

31-12-2009, 19:44
Well done lads!

Do you think when you pick up the medals you can ask her what her favourite formation is? And has she edited Old Phil into the game?

31-12-2009, 19:49
Hearty congrats!

31-12-2009, 20:03
Brilliant. This is just what the honours list should be for. Congratulations to you both.

many congratualtions, hard to believe i've spent nearly 20yrs of my life playing the games you guys are involved in - well deserved!

31-12-2009, 20:38
Congratulations. Best game(s) ever.

We may see a lot of moaning on the board but that's only 'cause people feel compelled to come on and say so when something goes wrong. It doesn't stop it being the best game of all time.

Great stuff. Well done again.

31-12-2009, 20:41
awesome news. congratulations lads

31-12-2009, 20:45
Congratulations to both. Well deserved considering the joy CM and FM has brought me over the last few years.

yo dudes well done dudes

31-12-2009, 23:14
I'm a bit surprised, but congratulations!

CM was IMO the best computer game around in the late 90s and early 00s, so if such an award is given to the games industry, then the Collyers are certainly worthy recipients.

31-12-2009, 23:21
This is awesome news. Paul and Olivers games have been a very big part of my life ever since I got the first CM on the Amiga. Wonderful!

I wonder if the Queen plays? hehe

01-01-2010, 00:06
Congrats guys, well done :)

01-01-2010, 01:33
disgraceful yet our men are fighting n dieing for us overseas ..

yet the queen gives out M.B.E,s to someone for just making a game ..

01-01-2010, 02:03
Congratulations to the two C's. If someone had told me back in 92 that a couple of bluenoses would impact my life enough to have me spending hours upon hours, weeks and months over the best part of the next two decades enjoying thier interpretation of football, I would have told them to bugger off. Well deserved guys.

01-01-2010, 02:23
Just saw this on the BBC website, congratulations!

01-01-2010, 04:20
congratulations Paul and Oliver!

An amazing recognition and it couldn't have gone to two more deserving guys. :)

01-01-2010, 04:25

What an ignorant comment!

They got the reward in recognition for their services to the UK's computer games industry. The rewards are meant to reflect all walks of life, not just services to killing.

01-01-2010, 04:27
The Queen did say it would have been a knighthood if it wasnt for the superkeepers saving all her sides shots.

01-01-2010, 05:53
Congrats guys. Well done.

01-01-2010, 05:59
Allow me to add my congratulations on your "gongs". I've been washing dishes every night for fourty-four years of married life, trying to get mine. Where did I go wrong? Kindest of New Year regards.

01-01-2010, 07:14
Thanks for all the kind messages folks, much appreciated by my bro and I.

We certainly couldn't have got our games from what they were 20 years ago to where they are today without the support of the community. So cheers!

Wishing everyone a happy 2010, with an extra ten percent reserved for all fellow bluenoses around the World ;)

01-01-2010, 08:54
Congratulations guys!

Military honours are in a different category and there were many more awarded to servicemen and women than there were to computing experts.

Your comment shows a remarkable lack of knowledge of the honours system in particular and our armed forces in general.

01-01-2010, 11:21
Congratulations. Was good to see Captain Picard being given a Knighthood too :)

01-01-2010, 11:22
ive got a friend in afghanistan who is risking his life everyday , im sure he will have to wait till his 78 till he gets his , and kickballz go eat some veg u puwseeeee, services to killin ha ha ha

01-01-2010, 11:27

01-01-2010, 11:34
Agreed Kriss. The government often often praises the British video gaming sector and its global influence and it would like to see it even stronger, so no surprise that SI Games should be honoured.

The real scandal was when friends of the government used to get awards for being 'good old boys' rather than for any real achievement. That happens a lot less now.

Gratz to the lads!!

01-01-2010, 11:49
Paul also had his fair share of time off - trying to be a rock star in the early CM days (he was in a band called Elevate) - so no, they get the same size medal...

Sounds a bit like early Sonic Youth. I had never realised the Collyer's talents were so far reaching. Hard to find a recording of Elevate though.

Congrats on the award and the recognition guys.

01-01-2010, 12:07
Well done, not bad for a couple of Shropshire lads.

01-01-2010, 12:09
Brilliant. Well done guys.

01-01-2010, 13:56

SI has always been a great company and I through the years I have even had save games "repaired" by Paul C and company...would never get something like that from anyone else.

Although I feel a lot of these awards and especially knighthoods are given out a little to easily. :)

01-01-2010, 14:12
Awesome, great news........ now start cracking on with FM11!! Chop chop.

Seriously, well done.

01-01-2010, 14:19
congratulations this is well deserved thank you for my 13 years of enjoyment and many more to come :D

01-01-2010, 14:40
Haha, wow. Didn't see that coming at all. What great news for the Collyers, Sports Interactive, Football Manager and the British games industry.

I don't really think I need to say "well done" when the Queen's just done it :D

01-01-2010, 15:09
Congrats guys.

A very pleasant surprise.

Is this a first for the UK gming industry?

01-01-2010, 15:19
Congrats indeed. Been playing since the original on the Amiga and still as addicted with a lass and a kid as I was in my bedroom when I was 13. :D

01-01-2010, 15:29
Congrats to you both! Thoroughly deserved for the hours of enjoyment that FM/CM has given to the masses over the years.

01-01-2010, 15:41
I remember my very first encounter with the CM Series well, CM Italia, a guy who I used to work with on niteshift used to rant and rave about a certain football manager game, to shut him up I told him to bring it in so I could try it out, at that time, sensible soccer was my fav game on the C64....well since that day I have been addicted and I am the proud owner of every CM and football manager game released, now FML is a big part of my life and will hopefully also be around for many a year to come, you guys deserve the awards for making so many football managers live that dream.....

Well done guys, you must be buzzing and so you should be.....

01-01-2010, 15:46
Congrats and well deserved. CM/FM has done much to expose world football (ahem..soccer) to many of us here in the US before the likes of the interweb, Fox Soccer and ESPN. Maybe we can get them The Presidential Medal of Freedom as well

01-01-2010, 16:06
Brilliant... Congrats guys.. and a very happy new year!!

01-01-2010, 16:30
Great news congrats guys!

01-01-2010, 16:57
Congratulations, well-deserved!

Like many I am proud to be a tiny part of this on-going project.

Long live Football Manager!

01-01-2010, 17:19
Wow well all i can say is thank you for giving me hours of fun and a chance to make new friends and play in a beta GW for FML and still get hours of fun out the FM series. Well deserved lads and enjoy your day out :)

01-01-2010, 17:22
Also i feel proud to say iv been allowed the chance to beta test a great game and be at the start of something historical :D

01-01-2010, 17:41
Well done,

cant be to many game developers who have been awarded by the Royals

01-01-2010, 20:42

01-01-2010, 21:54
Congrats guys very deserved even if you caused every man who plays fm to break up his relationship on the release date :D no but really well done

01-01-2010, 22:11
I wonder how many women agree with these nominations lol.

Congratulations on it all though.

01-01-2010, 22:58
Congrats guys and it is truly deserved

and i thought it was princes william and harry that play the game not the queen and they have nagged the queen to give them an award to show there gratitude for the way they have got the princes addicted to the game

01-01-2010, 23:40
