Are players more likely to be sent off against big teams?

It seems that way to me. When you get them in a knockout contest you often get a red card despite not having strong tackling.

Is this deliberate based on real life (or not)?

I would say the reseachers would reseached it.

i think they get sent off more, i mean there is that press conference question about rival games and players not losing their head

Slightly off topic but has anyone researched the difference in discipline between light, normal, and hard tackling? (and the difference on success)
