View Full Version : [FM10] Croydon Municipal - Home, sweet Home.

Intro :

In a desperate bid to actually play FM10, I went for the ultimate. The spectacular. I tried, and failed at FM09, and hoped FM10 would offer me something new. Something exciting. On first looks, I wasn't too impressed with the game. The skin is some what hideous, and the new layout out couldn't be less user friendly if if gave you a little electric shock every time you missed a CCC. That being said, I've persevered, and have adjusted to the poor skin, mainly for the fact that I think the new tactics module, is by far and away the best improvement FM has made, since dropping Eidos. I was raised in Croydon for much of my younger years, and even played for Croydon Athletic, back when I was 16 / 17. (Many moons ago) - so when Roberto922 created the English Small to Big Club challenge : Extended Edition (http://community.sigames.com/showthread.php?t=159152) - I couldn't wait to take on Croydon Municipal from the depths of the English Leagues. A club with no history, no players, and no staff, the run to the Champions League title, should be an interesting one, that could take decades to complete. As far as career games go, this is the best.

Ok, thought I'd start this thread up, as I've ended my first season in charge (Report to come shortly).

Just to let you guys know, I am still playing FM08 too. I'm playing them side by side, and having a lot of fun in both saves.

12-12-2009, 15:31
If your last thread is anything to go by then this is going to be a really good read! Looking forward to seeing this and the unearthing of the new FM10 Smylie! :D

12-12-2009, 15:33
the way scoring goes in these smaller leagues, if I even get a half decent striker while I'm still in Tiers 6-10 - He could easily bag 500+ goals for me :D

cant wait to read more. i'm having a big problem with the tactics on fm10, even after reading the bible lol. best of luck nep(legend)

12-12-2009, 16:03
Good luck Nep, I'll be following

12-12-2009, 17:07
Excellent stuff. Thought you'd never do it lol.

12-12-2009, 17:33
Hopefully another highly successful career awaits Nep

12-12-2009, 18:27
I hope this save will be as epic as your FM08 ventures with Knockbreda. Good Luck

12-12-2009, 18:36
I thought the game automatically set up players of all ages, not just youths, in this version if there were not either any or enough. The same with all the teams.

Him and the departed Barnard carried this team to the top of the table. Legwinski was awesome.

12-12-2009, 18:50
rubbish season Nep, where's the player scoring more goals than appearances ;)

12-12-2009, 18:53
Haven't found one yet :D

Please look at my first and second posts, guys

They will be updated each season.

You had a 56 year old player playing for you!

That's old enough to be Neppo Monster's Dad! :D

12-12-2009, 19:32
You had a 56 year old player playing for you!

That's old enough to be Neppo Monster's Dad!

How apt for the career "you'll never win anything with kids" being underneath this atm :D

Great season Nep  Gotta agree with Paul though, a less than one in two strike rate for Burchall is enough of a reason to release him in terms of your previous achievments :D.

the greyham
12-12-2009, 19:34
great first season. well done

12-12-2009, 19:36
I played the 56 year old 2 times. I saw him in a game, and thought, hold on, chance of a record here in FM10 Records thread, so played him at 55 and 150 something days. Looked in the records thread, and someone has played the same guy, but older than mine, so I waited 'till he was 56, and played him again :D

12-12-2009, 21:57
Are you using the tactics wizard then Nep? Are you setting up like you did in FM8 with the wingers supplying early balls to the forwards?

12-12-2009, 22:19
To be honest, I don't really know what I've done with the tactics. Its pretty much on overdrive. All 6 attacking players and 2 wing backs are in attack mode, and then the 2 DC's are on defense mode. Its crazy, sometimes I'm left with 2v5 when the oppo breaks, but I've found 2 DC's that are better than the leagues quality, so at the moment, I'm not being caught out as much as I should be. I love the tactics, love the style, don't use the wizard persay, but I do use the new style module. I love the fact that it finally gives key attributes for each player position and stuff. Only once I get to a respectable league, probably League 2 - will I really start noticing how important the tactics are. But at this level, someone with a couple of key attributes > 15 for any particular area, will just dominate, which is why Legwinski done so good. I've got a couple of 38 year olds joining in the new season, and 1 40 year old, and honestly, they are good enough for League 1 / League 2 teams, aside from the physical attributes. I'll get a couple of screenies, hold on

12-12-2009, 22:25

I haven't "signed" them yet, but only Freedman has negotiated the contract, the other 2 stated the demands, and I could meet them with ease.

Cristaldo especially, looks awesome

12-12-2009, 23:04
Great start Nep  and some great looking players possibly coming in the future. Age is not a concern in such low leagues.

13-12-2009, 01:00
Cheers Mexico!!

Unfortunately, Freedman rejected me, and the other two didn't get Work Permits :(

13-12-2009, 01:17
Good luck with this

13-12-2009, 04:29
Another Good luck from me Nep

But how in the world did you get Sylvain Legwinski playing for you....

13-12-2009, 13:46
I have no idea :D

He was a free agent, so I thought, let me try. I went to the contract screen and had "Legwinski would be happy to sign an amatuer contract with Croydon Municipal"

I was shocked. Same with Barnard, who was better than Legwinski.

13-12-2009, 18:42
Legwinski plays for St Neots Town IRL, so in the game I guess he's happy to sign for clubs at a similar level.

15-12-2009, 01:52
Croydon Municipal, in Tier 9 of English Football - have just made it to Round 1 of the F.A Cup :D

I've come through 3 Qualifying rounds, 2 of them going to replays, and have a home tie v BSN/S Side Bradford P.A.

I'll be so happy if I can beat them, and get a home tie v a Championship side, as my stadium holds 8,000 people :D

the greyham
15-12-2009, 10:27
i always prefer the away tie if you lower league against a championship side as you get half the gate receipts, usually 50k-100k with championship sides get a prem in the round after away your looking at anywhere between 200k-700k :)

15-12-2009, 10:38
I'm yet to play my Round 1 tie, but Round 2 has already been drawn, and I will play either a team 1 below BSS/N, or 2 Below BSS/N - Should I get that far.

A 3rd Round F.A Cup tie for Croydon, is a real possability here :D

15-12-2009, 11:23
Good luck Nep, that'd be awesome if you can pull it off! Mon beating Bishops Stortford!! Just keep Charlie Sheringham at bay and you'll be fine. Quite a few people I know play for Stortford actually :D

15-12-2009, 19:10
The dream is over in the F.A Cup :( Lost 2-1 to Bradford P.A - despite going 1-0 up and holding it 'till half time. It was such a close match too. Annoying as it was, I never expected the reaction I got from the fans. They were unhappy with me :( - Well excuse me, Bradford are like, 5 divisions above me, ffs :D

15-12-2009, 19:17
Damn, unlucky Nep :(

15-12-2009, 19:22
Stupid Croydonites

the greyham
15-12-2009, 20:02
unlucky, can concentrate on the league now tho

16-12-2009, 22:11
Really struggling to score goals this season. I've tried a few different formations, but I just can't find a striker who can finish.

1 guy, who went 36 hours without scoring, had 4 goals in 41 games this season..!! My other strikers score averagely 1 in every 4 or 5 games. My midfielders have as many goals. On a plus side, I rarely concede, but I prefer the goals. I really need to find a way to get my strikers scoring.

Currently sat 2nd in the table after 31 (of 42) games, but I'm 10 points behind the leaders, so if I finish 2nd, it'll be a play-off to get me promoted.

the greyham
16-12-2009, 22:49
give the strikers a size 13 football boot up the a** that should get em scoring goals

16-12-2009, 22:55
Had major problems in Malta too Nep. In the end I just decided to go all out attack from the first whistle (at home). So it was my usual tactic but with overload, fluid, roam and more expressive in the team tactics bit. We had a really good defence too and it did pay off for a while but as you say it is all about the goals!

16-12-2009, 23:31
I'm going to take that on board. Because with the tactic I used last season, it was effective. I altered it this season to try and keep more clean sheets, which I've done, however, in the process I've stopped scoring :D

On top of that, the tactic I had last season just doesn't seem to work in this league :D

Last season, I had an ST on loan, who was top scorer, this season, my strikers are really poor.

End of Season Report

Don't remember it.! I've been at the end of the season for about 4 or 5 season in my Knockbreda save. Going to give this a shot for a while, see what I can do. So yeah, embarking on my third season now.

28-01-2010, 15:30
Just catching up with this Nep. Looks like you are doing very well indeed.

How are you finding it managing this far down? Has the regional sorting improved?

29-01-2010, 21:25
Don't mind it down here, really. As has been mentioned in the actual thread on CSE, its a bit easy the first few seasons, because the players are so evenly balanced. So for me, having somone like Legwinski, is almost like a game breaker. (Not in the literal sense). I enjoy starting as low as possible, though, and look forward to focusing on this enough over the next few months, to do something memorable with Croydon. No idea what the regional sorting is, so you'll have to shed some light on that one, haha. But yeah, I mean, It would be easy enough to win the first 4-5 Divisions with 2 or 3 key players, and a solid tactic. The only issue I'm having right now, is that I can't find a decent Striker for love, loan or money. As you can see from the Team Sheet, my top scorer last season finished with 14 goals in 34 games. The next highest scorer was the DM Legwinski, with 8, and they were all from Free Kicks and Pens. I've never known such a low scoring season, especially considering I finished 3rd, and only on goal difference..!!

If I can find a Striker with attributes in the 12-15 range, even just 4 or 5 key attributes there, then I'm sure he'll bag 30+ in a season. But I have searched very high, and very wide, and have come unstuck at every corner :(

29-01-2010, 22:08
Good read so far. It's always interesting to see someone else's experiences in the lower leagues. :)

14-02-2010, 18:47
Just to let anyone thats following this know, I'm still playing. Just not finding much time right now. :D

14-02-2010, 23:50
I know that feeling!

21-02-2010, 14:19
Neppo's a Croydon lad

Don't mind me asking, but where abouts in Croydon.

21-02-2010, 21:09

Nice one, been there a few times myself. My Dad's from Croydon, not sure whereabouts, in East Croydon though, go on holiday to Croydon with the parents a few times a year as I have family in there.

End of Season Report

Well, promotion.! On top of that, a fantastic cup run, that bagged me my first Cup, along with my second league title, and my first double.! This season took an exceptionally long time to complete. I've not really been into the game all to much, but patch 10.3 really made the game playable for me, and slammed me into the "just one more game" mentality. I'm gutted I don't have the time to play that I used to, but I'll carry on with this career as long as possible. It was a good season, but losing Legwinski this season to retirement, will be a massive hit to the club. He has carried us through the last 3 seasons, and will be hard to replace. I'm having a full team shake up for next season, only keeping 6 of the team in my plans, and releasing the rest.

15-03-2010, 20:27
Took you long enough to complete another season Nep ;)

Great season it was though, worth the wait! What are your plans for next year, just to survive, push for mid-table, or dare i say it, another title?! :D

15-03-2010, 20:35
I think I'll aim for the top 10 next season. I know it took long, sorry :( - The processing times are crazy long in these low divisions. And I haven't had too much time regardless. I need a whole new team for next season though :D

15-03-2010, 20:40
Haha, don't worry mate, i know the feeling of not being able to play much :(

I wish you the best of luck in your push for the top 10!

16-03-2010, 01:06
Well done. Where next? Isthmian First?

16-03-2010, 11:35
Just to check - is this with my file?

Good luck Nep - I'm getting more inspired to start my own career update thread with Wimblington in Level 11.

16-03-2010, 17:49
Well done. Where next? Isthmian First?

The "English Northern Premier League First Division North" :D

Just to check - is this with my file?

Good luck Nep - I'm getting more inspired to start my own career update thread with Wimblington in Level 11.

You have Level 11

I want it :D

And yeah, this is using your file

17-03-2010, 01:47
Croydon... South London... in the Northern First Division North?

Bloody hell, your fuel costs will be astronomical. :D

18-03-2010, 00:06
You gotta laugh, really :D - I don't know why we're in this division.

Super Bladesman
18-03-2010, 19:56
I'll have a check of that tomorrow, but aye. It works as well as I can get it to - which is to say, beautifully... most of the time :D

19-03-2010, 01:25
If SI have implemented the ever rising cost of petrol, then you really are ****ed. :D

19-03-2010, 13:45
I've identified that a handful of the Combined Counties sides, including Croydon Municipal, didn't have Level 7/8 (or 11) regional competition preferences set, and so this is now fixed for my next build. Sorry for any inconvenience to your career or team's finances - I'm sure it'll soon be forgotten as you rocket up the leagues :)

19-03-2010, 18:46
Yeah, shouldn't be an issue. I'm already 200,000 in the red :D

Got an immense team for this level though, so hopefully auto-promotion is where I'm headed.

19-03-2010, 21:48
You'll probably end up in the Highland League then. :D

19-03-2010, 22:13
Probably, :D

19-03-2010, 22:14
I've actually had an OK start to the season, won my first 2 league games 4-1 and 1-0, but have since lost in the FA Cup 1-0 to Whitby Town :(

19-03-2010, 22:28
Seems I have jinxed myself :D

3rd Game, I'm leading 1-0 v Wakefield. 10 minutes to go, I've dominated, 15+ shots at this point, they've had 3. They get a man sent off. 5 minutes to go, they score. 1-1. Gutted :(

19-03-2010, 22:47
ENPLFDN - Game 4.

Came back with an emphatic win, after drawing 1-1 with 10 man wakefield, by destroying Bedfont Green 3-0. My midfielders are so superior, in this division, it seems. Only 1 goal has come from outside the midfield quartet so far this season, and the win puts us top of the table.

21-03-2010, 14:13
So, I can appreciate that being Croydon must be a pretty boring read for you guys :D

That being said, it also makes is a pretty boring Career Thread for me to update. And that's never fun. So, is there anything you guys would like to see from the save? Screen shots of anything on a regular basis? Any side games you want me to try and achieve? Something like that. I know I've not been too active playing this, but am ploughing through now, so should update more often :D

22-03-2010, 00:59
I want a screenshot of the club doing a publicity stunt where they have half a dozen page 3 models in the team bath dressed skimpily in the Croydon kit.

If you can't do that, just let me know how the other Croydon teams are doing to see if you're better than them or not.

22-03-2010, 15:30
I wish I could do the first option, Nobby :D

Croydon - 15th in the English Combined Counties League Premier Division (Tier 9)
Croydon Athletic - 10th in English Isthmian League First Division South (Tier 8, also the division I should be in :D )
Croydon Greenside - Not in a playable division.

22-03-2010, 16:49
Perhaps an occasional screenshot, every 5 years or so, of each league so that we can see what's changed would be good i reckon

22-03-2010, 20:48
I can do that.

Ok, I'm finding it pretty tough the first 10 games in this Level 8 Division. I can go from beating 3rd place 4-0, to losing to 22nd 3-0. I have extremes, where I'll have 30 shots (all be it, only 3 or 4 on target :D ) - to games where I'll be lucky to get 2 or 3 shots in total. I'm growing tired of the indifference in performance, however, I'll put half of it down to the fact I have 5 of my first team injured, and I have a "new team" - after releasing most players last season.

I'm going to try some things tactically, and obviously, use this thread to document my findings. I've been playing a 4-2-2-2 (CM / CM - AML / AMR). I'm going to try a 4-2-3-1 (DEF/DM/DM/AMC/AMC/AMC/ST) - To see if I can utilize a 6 back, 4 forward kind of thing, but with 1 of the DM's being as attacking as possible. Might even go for DM/CM instead of DM/DM. Hopefully, the aim with this tactic is, to try and stop the goals, but make sure I have enough up front. Hopefully it works :D

22-03-2010, 21:20
First game with the new tactic, and it worked well enough, considering a mid-season change :D

Cup Game v Leek.

I won 2-1. More importantly, I had 9 shots, with 4 hitting the target, and 3 CCC's. My team only took 1 long shot, too. The oppo had 10 shots, 2 on target, 5 long shots. Shows the DM (I went with DM, CM, AMC, AML, AMR, ST) - is closing down the oppo enough to restrict them to long range shooting. 85% Tackles won, and 68% passing, (excellent rate for my team :) ) the defining factors in how I've set the formation up. A strong home performance.

If this continues to work (I'll monitor it for home / away games) - It could become a successful home tactic, leading me to just find an effective away tactic. Hopefully, this works both ways :)

22-03-2010, 21:50
Second game with the new tactic. At home again, but I'm 5th in the League, playing 2nd in the League.

FT : 3-0 \o/

The lone striker bags 2 goals, (as he also did in the 2-1 win) - and the CM scored the third. Stats again, very good. I only had 9 Shots again, 6 hitting the target this time. Another 3 CCC's. Oppo restricted to 6 shots, 0 on target, 4 long shots. My 3 Attacking midfielders all run over 12k each.! Hopefully on to something impressive here, with this tactic.

22-03-2010, 21:51
Oh, I'd just like to add, this is also without 5 first team players, and my squad fitness is pretty poor, with some starters only being on 70-80%.! :)

23-03-2010, 00:46
Well, when players skip training because they're late home from work, they won't always be fit. ;)

23-03-2010, 01:04
Shhhhhhhhhhhh. :(

24-03-2010, 02:45
I changed my tactic a little, and have been epically awesome since. 5 League games, 5 Wins, 10 Goals Scored, 0 Conceded :)

I'm not sat on top of the pile almost half way through the season. :)

27-03-2010, 18:54
I have just realised I have an FM10 Record with this club already. (Partially preempted, but not entirely so, he actually played a decent role for my team.)

Alan Gracey - Oldest Player - 58 Years, 66 Days (http://i414.photobucket.com/albums/pp221/Hamiooo/FM10%20Croydon/Season%203/PlayerRecs.jpg) :D

Beats the current record by 2 years, and 34 days :D

Oldest Player - Deisler26 - Bernhard Oberg - 56 years 32 days - Proof (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v667/delenfent/Oldest-1.jpg)

28-03-2010, 10:42
58 :D He's probably real, is his age correct though?

28-03-2010, 16:37
I don't know. He's since retired. :D

30-03-2010, 00:10
Shame he didn't score. That record would have taken some beating.

End of Season Report

To begin the end of season report, we'll go with the "To Begin" - in my usual reports. Oddly, after never saying anything about him, never scouting him, never adding him to any short list, Watford offered me David Beckham (http://i414.photobucket.com/albums/pp221/Hamiooo/FM10%20Croydon/Season%204/Beckham.jpg) for a nominal fee. I found this bizarre, but went with it. I don't have any transfer money, so went back with an offer of 0, which they accepted. I was desperately hoping that because they offered him to me, he was willing to come. He wasn't. However, it only said "at this time". Beckham is 37 now, and I will be 1 division lower than the Blue Square N/S - And Watford are in League 1. Perhaps, next season, I can get him on loan, and then maybe if he's still around, actually pick him up while I'm in the Conference Divisions.

On top of that, I've been linked to a lot of jobs this season, the biggest names being Cardiff, and have had multiple job offers. Aldershot (http://i414.photobucket.com/albums/pp221/Hamiooo/FM10%20Croydon/Season%204/JobOffer.jpg) being the latest team to want me. I'm getting many, many offers from League 2 and lower, and get linked with Championship jobs all the time.

Sorry about the Outstanding Performers for the last 2 seasons. I just completely forget. :)

Next Season :

Well, promotion this season was fantastic. I didn't really think I'd do it, despite people saying how easy the lower leagues are. I had a poor early start, but a good run of mid-season form saw me rise to the top of the table. Tough from there on it, with 4 of us in the title race with 6 games to go. A draw and a loss for me ruled me out, but I was able to win the play-offs, and grab that promotion. Another low divsion next season, but I'm not hoping for much. I'll consolidate my team again, replace my back up players with better, get some new staff in, and hope I can scrape through to a play-off place.

30-03-2010, 14:29
Well done on the promotion, hopefully you can move back down south next season...!

30-03-2010, 15:21
Another season, another promotion. Stop being so good at this game! :D

I'm in the Ishmian this season, so I think it's ok :D

Another season, another promotion. Stop being so good at this game! :D

Well done Nep.

Cheers lads :D

I don't feel like I'm "so good" :D There is a guy in the actual thread in CSE, that had consistent promotions to the Prem, and got 4th spot in his first season. (I'm not one to doubt people, but you know, maybe he used another method, if you know what I mean). I've already missed 1 promotion once, and only came 4th this season :D

However, I've amassed a fantastic squad for the new season, that back in FM08, I would have been proud to have had in the Blue Square Premier. So hopefully, I should be a force. I was made 3rd faves to win the league, too.

mag man
30-03-2010, 15:50
I think once you build up a decent squad consecutive promotions are possible.

Congrats on promotion

30-03-2010, 23:41
Well done Nep. Have Hayes stayed North?

04-05-2010, 17:27
Cheers mag man.

Nobby, Hayes are in the South Midlands league, so pretty north :D

Danny Hearn (http://i414.photobucket.com/albums/pp221/Hamiooo/FM10%20Croydon/Season%205/DannyHearn.jpg) - A good season from him. He's been a consistent scorer for me for 3 years now. Hopefully, he progresses into a decent forward that can carry me into the Blue Square South in the next few years.

End of Season Report

Not really anything happening this season. High mid-table finish, which is quite nice, but I was right in with a play-off spot for most of the season, then dropped off at the end, when injuries and suspensions halted the team. Only played in 2 cups this season, for some reason, and didn't do very well in those. Really wouldn't mind a decent cup run in the F.A. Cup, even to the first round, just for some funds. Because with this much debt, I can't afford to sign even free players, because of the wage bill :D

I've been getting a lot of "links" with much higher clubs, as a manager. League 2 clubs are constantly planning me as the replacement. Which is nice.

On top of that, I've been moved from the Isthmian league, to the Southern Premier League. Can't for the life of me work out why.

Next season, HOPEFULLY I'll be able to bad a few better players, and go for the promotion push into the Blue Square South.
